Agendas and minutes are available on the City website at www.springville.org/agendas-minutes/ Last Month in the Mayor’s Message I mentioned the State of the City Address given at our City Council Meeting. In this month’s message I wanted to continue with some of the items I talked about in that speech. I mentioned how grateful we are for our city employees and efforts they make in their various positions. Most of our employees are hardworking and dedicated to serving the public. We will continue to seek out good employees and to train them to be helpful and pleasant when working with our citizens. The importance of public safety and security is always near the top of the list of the surveys we do periodically. Our police are very professional in how they handle situations and are dedicated to making Springville a safe place to live. We have expanded our fire and rescue coverage to have crews available for immediate ambulance and fire response from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. seven days a week. During the evening and night hours we rely on our volunteers to respond. We are trying to add to this budget each year to expand this coverage. In the past recycle solid waste cans have been emptied by a private company Ace Disposal. This last year the City started do that service for the same fee. Contrary to popular belief we are not getting enough payment for recycled materials to pay for the program and so we have to charge a fee to do this collection. We presently have about seven hundred participants and would like to encourage others to start recycling. It may cost you a little more but will make us more environmentally friendly and help preserve our dump area for a longer period of time. Call our city offices and sign up today. As you can see we are working to provide good services to our citizens and to make Springville a better place to live. In January, 2013, the Planning Commission sponsored an open house and information gathering meeting to learn more about the Historic Center Community in preparation for the development of a plan for the community located between 400 North and 800 South and 400 West and 400 East. Since that time, the Planning Sta has worked with an Ad hoc Committee of volunteers, taking the ideas from the information gathering meeting and develop a plan to address the concerns of residents and property owners of this community. On Tuesday, March 18th, the Springville City Council will hear the report of the Ad hoc Committee and an overview of the proposed Historic Center Community Plan at the City Council meeting which begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the Civic Center, located at 110 South Main. A draft of the plan can

W H A T I S S T O R M W A T E R R U N O F F ,A N D W H Y S H O U L D W E C A R E ?Melting snow and rain are considered storm water

runoff; it runs off roads, parking lots, driveways, roofs, and yards. As it flows across these surfaces, storm water picks up contaminants such as oils, salts, sediments, fertilizers, pesticides and household chemicals. Contaminated storm water flows into storm drains, ditches, and gutters, and eventually into streams, wetlands and lakes. Contaminants in storm water runoff impair water quality in streams and wetlands, and they can lead to fish kills, loss of wildlife habitat, and public health risks. Uncontrolled storm water runoff is one of the largest remaining sources of water quality impairment in the United States.

As our community grows, more land is covered with hard surfaces. This means more water reaches streams more quickly and is potentially more contaminated. Let’s work together to lessen the degree of contamination and help protect local water resources.

You can also help us ease the flooding potential by keeping storm drain inlets near your property clean of debris or by reporting them to the Public Works Department at 801-491-2780.
