Message from Prioress

Triduum: Our Holiest Weekby Mary Jane Vigil, OSB; Liturgy Director

Blessed holy oils received at the Chrism Mass.

article continued on page 3

On Palm Sunday, the start of our holiest week, we begin our journey of “entrance” just as the Church celebrates Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem. As Jesus completes His Paschal Mystery, we journey with him and make our final preparations for the Easter Feast. Palm fronds adorn the Monastery’s pathways and hallways as we make our joyful and triumphant entry into the church carrying our palm branches.

During the reading of the Passion, we enter the procession with Christ to Calvary and stand at the foot of the Cross.

The shouts of “Crucify him! Crucify him!” remind us that it is indeed our story and despite our good resolutions, promises and triumphant “Hosannas”, we too, crucify others at times.

On Tuesday, two community members join the entire Diocese for the Chrism Mass and receive the blessed Holy Oils.

We gather together on Holy Thursday to share in the Supper of the Lord to hear and enter into the experience of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples. We thank Jesus for His

enduring presence in the Eucharist and for his enduring presence in the faces, hands, and feet of those around us.

Dear Friends and Families,

Every year I look forward to spring. I get so excited to see the jonquils, crocus and the small green sprouts breaking through the forest soil. It fills me with joy and new hope!

I hope this spring issue of The Review will fill you with new hope and joy as you celebrate springtime at the monastery with us. This month we celebrate the monastic entrance of our new novice Sister Margaret Meaney into our community. We also have Ana Cloughly and Janet Houthoofd, two wonderful women, who are in Temporary Profession. They bring a breath of fresh air and a depth of what it means to be Benedictine. Each of these very gifted women has a hunger for the Spirit of God.

“Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them.”

-John 20:26

As I glance down the list of our many, many donors, I am filled with hope and am humbled by your generosity! Your donations help us to be the presence of Christ in so many lives all over the country, from Florida, to New Mexico, to Colorado and many stops in-between, because you are out there and a part of us, carrying on the message. WE are so rich!

Our Holy Week Liturgies have profoundly fed us with the Word of God. The Lord’s life, death and resurrection so often reminds me of the great hope we inherit as Christians in the message of God through Jesus. We are loved, cherished, and sought after by the Divine and that love, as intense as it is, waits gently for us to respond. In this Easter Season we have been saturated with the hope of this gentle God. As we read in the Gospel of John, “A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them.” Even if the doors are locked to our hearts or the hearts of our our loved ones, Jesus can come, and does come. We read again in the Gospel of John, Jesus asking Peter, “Do you love me?” Perhaps like us, the Divine needs to know the answer to “Do you love me?” This relationship with the Divine is not one sided.

May your hopes and dreams for your loved ones be entrusted to Christ, who comes even if the doors are locked. May you be reminded that we need to say, “I love you”, not only to each other, but to the Divine as well.

Know always that you are welcome to visit us at the monastery. We celebrate Sunday Liturgy at 10:15 a.m. every week and you are always invited to pray Liturgy of the Hours with us. Peace and Joy,

These words, based on Chapter Eight of the Song of Songs, (A Song of Covenant Love), were chosen by Peggy Meaney for her Rite of Entrance into the Novitiate on April 13th during the Community’s Spring meetings. “Entrance” into community now moves from an initial experience of monastic life to a year of immersion into the spirituality of Benedictine life envisioned and lived by this Monastic Community—“seeking God in the daily celebration of life” (Charism).

Peggy, born in the state of Washington and attending Catholic School, felt the call ‘to be a sister’ when she was in the third grade. In 2005, while working in Washington D.C. for a prominent law firm located one block from the White House, Peggy experienced an overwhelming call to seek God within a religious community. After a ‘Come and See Weekend’, several retreats at Benet Hill and a year as a ‘live at home affiliate’, she moved to the monastery on July 5th, 2011. She often says, “I was in love with God and now I have fallen in love with the Benet Hill Community and enjoy the oblates and our Sunday assembly.”

The year long novitiate will be a time for Sister Margaret to deepen her relationship with God and integrate her personal spirituality into the Benedictine way of life. During this time, she will be spending time studying, internalizing the Rule of

Benedict and deepening her understanding of the particular charism, vision and mission of the Benet Hill Community. This is also a time of mutual discernment - listening to all the ways God speaks and taking the time to dialogue with individual sisters in the community.

Our joy and anticipation grow as we gather around the fire and light the Easter candle to honor Christ, the light of God’s glory and the Light of the world. We spread this light to all thecandles held by our members and express our feelings in the Exultet, “Exult all creation around God’s throne! This is our Passover feast! It is the night when Christ broke the chains of death and rose triumphantly from the grave! This is our resurrection night! Boundless your love!”

The joyful celebration continues during Easter Mass on Sunday morning as we sing the “Alleluia” that has been silent for 40 days. We read the letter of St. Paul to the Romans, recalling our Baptism into the death and resurrection of Christ that we might rise to a new life in Him. Our Baptismal vows are renewed as we bless ourselves with the Easter water, and once again remember the enduring presence of the Risen Christ in the Eucharist. During this Holiest Week, we entered into the death and resurrection of Jesus and once more allow his life to grow within us.

The Good Friday Liturgy is simple and solemn. We focus on the Cross, the instrument of death and the instrument of salvation and prostrate ourselves in humble adoration. The power and majesty of Jesus shines through the Gospel of St. John and together we pray for the universal church.

Our Easter Vigil consists of Word and Light as we gather to tell our story of salvation. We experience

God’s nurturing love in the story of Creation and learn of His faithful love as we enter into the lives of Sarah, Isaac, and Abraham as they struggle to do God’s will.

There is a refrain from a song that is running through my mind; “The times they are a changing”. How true this is! We are all very aware of the many changes in the world, the global economics, the church and in religious life in general. Ecclesiastes tells us there is a time for everything. It is time for us to look at the wealth of Benedictine tradition and to look with hope to our future. Sister Clare has appointed a committee to explore New Models of Association with Benet Hill Monastery.

The Lord’s call is both personal and unique. It does not, however, require holiness to pursue it. All that is asked is to follow out of love, faithfulness, and trust.

On February 16, 2013 at 5 p.m. Vespers, Renee Brown from San Jose, California answered God’s call by making her final oblate profession. Mentored by oblate Barbara Neilon for the past 2 ½ years, Renee is the director of an addiction rehabilitation center. She visited several Benedictine monasteries before finding a home at Benet Hill.

At that same gathering, Barbara Neilon was recognized for seven faithful years as oblate core team/co-coordinator until Marie Therese Summers, OSB was appointed oblate director this past summer. In appreciation for her service, Barbara received funding from the Benet Hill community and fellow oblates to attend the Third International Oblate Congress in Rome, Italy this October.

When we—like Renee and Barbara—answer Christ’s call, we do so in two ways. First, it is in consent to our Lord’s will. But our second, and even greater response, is the one that takes place every day… for the rest of our lives.

For more information on becoming an oblate of St. Benedict, contact Marie Therese Summers, OSB at [email protected]. or call 719-633-0655 ext. 120.

Sister Leann, our most senior member, has been a monastic for over seventy years. After high school in Buena Vista, CO she was invited to be a student on a work scholarship at Mt. St. Scholastica College in Kansas. Since the distance between school and home was so great, Sister Leann was allowed to stay at the convent during Easter breaks. The quiet attracted her to monastic life. Her relationship with the sisters who taught at the College, especially her advisor, Sister Anthony, helped her to make her decision to enter. Among her many accomplishments, Sister Leann’s mission as a nursing teacher in Guyana is the highlight of her life. She was seventy years old when she went on this mission! Sister Leann says, “I just knew that living in community was right” and “I would choose it again!”

New Models of Association at Benet HillBenedictine Legacy: Leann Cogan, OSB94 Years young

by Ana Cloughly, OSB

What is the purpose of this committee? Rose Ann Barmann, OSB;chair has created three working groups to explore various possibilities of association. One group is looking back at the Benedictine tradition to explore live-in oblates and how that might be brought into our 21st Century. Another group is reviewing/updating the live-in volunteer option we have offered in the more recent past. The third group is creating what we are naming as “temporary monastics.” All three groups will have a form of immersion program so those in the program can learn about our prayer life, our charism and ministry statements as well as learning about the Rule of Benedict and Benet Hill Monastery. Mary Colleen Schwarz, OSB is our Vocation Director who serves on the committee and continues to discern with women about living a monastic life at Benet Hill.

Watch for more information about our New Models of Association as they are created during the coming months.

Another semester in the Benedictine Spirituality Center in the Pines is ending. We look back over the past few months amazed at the number of students who have participated and thrilled at the success of the programs and events. More and more individuals are attending classes and spending time in retreats and workshops as they continue their spiritual journeys. It is very gratifying to know that the word is spreading, the classes are filling, and we are able to provide new spiritual pathways to over 240 students in our programs and events this past winter.

As the semester concludes, we are happy to congratulate the graduates of our Benedictine Spirituality Programs. (see photos) Our Spiritual Journey and Contemplative Journey students will graduate in May. Scriptures students are finishing their courses.

Action and contemplation -- contemplation and action. Once thought of as mutually exclusive, the spiritual enrichment programs at Benet Hill monastery have shown me that they can be brought together on my spiritual journey.

Almost a decade ago, I faced the action and contemplation conundrum. I felt a deep spiritual dryness coupled with an overload of activities (at Church, my son’s school, Scouts and volunteer agencies). In search of more depth in prayer, I participated in the Contemplative Journey program at the monastery

August 2013:8-Day Intensive/Post Intensive Retreat, August 23 to 30The Intensive Retreat provides an opportunity to deepen the practice of centering prayer in an atmosphere of profound silence and community support.

Action and Contemplation - Contemplation and Action

by Steve Gabriel, Graduate

As my prayer life matured and deepened, God had in mind for me to do more -- action as a senior leader of a global prison ministry (Kairos Prison Ministry International). As the weight of this ministry began to fray my nerves, I turned to the Benedictine Spiritual Formation Program. Through BSFP, I was able to become more reflective and self-aware (of who I am, how I operate, and how I relate to God) and then more deeply aware of spiritual dynamics and God’s presence in my life. Equipped by God with a more contemplative vision, I was able to do God’s work prayerfully and effectively.

As my life again shifted gears, Benet Hill has offered me the opportunity to grow in spiritual depth through helping to facilitate some of the programs. I recently helped present the “Befriending the Mystics” series -- a wonderful opportunity to immerse myself for months at a time in the life and writings of mystics like Meister Eckhart and Teilhard de Chardin -- and then share my friendship with the mystics. So now my focus is to bring action and contemplation together in ministries like the Centering Prayer Group and outreach to the needy at my home parish (St. Patrick) and also in my working life as an engineer. As Fr. Richard Rohr has said, “We need a contemplative mind in order to do compassionate action.” And the Benet Hill monastery has given me the opportunity to develop that contemplative mind and lifestyle so that my action and “doing” in the world are more integrated.

and found that Centering Prayer provided the peace through silence and stillness that I had been seeking.

A Day in the Life

Sisters Elizabeth and Kathleen color Easter eggs for the Easter celebration!

Who is the cute Easter Bunny?

“Benet Hill Monastery is definitely the most pleasant working environment I have ever experienced. Although the Development office is very busy, the potential feeling of stress or overload that I would have experienced in my former job is always lessened by the fact that I can walk downstairs and see the everyday goings-on of the sisters during their daily monastic life. One of my favorite things to see is Sister Mary Jane pushing her cart of water jugs in and out of each room and hallway lovingly taking care of all the beautiful plants that fill the monastery. I am grateful for my position at the monastery and being able to share space with the wonderful women who call it their home.”

Dear Families and Friends,

“We do not know the work of God, who is working in everything.” However, here at Benet Hill, we do know that your faithful support and prayerful presence helps us carry out God’s work of our mission for the thousands of people who find renewal and refreshment in the “sacred space” of our monastery. We are a small “mustard seed” of a monastic community, but through your partnership with us, we are able to touch the global heart of the world through daily witness, prayers and intercessions for all humanity.

NOTE: The summary to the right shows your financial gifts of 2012. These gifts provide assistance in fulfilling our monastic mission to our community and the world. Our community is most grateful to each of you and we remember you and your loved ones daily in our prayers.

May God bless you all!
