Deadline for next issue Nov. 20, 2012
Welcome to the fall issue of Bitz n’Bytes.
If you are new to the community, we want to say
“Welcome”, and we are very happy that you’ve
chosen to make Springside your home. This is the
time of year when clubs and organizations are
recruiting new membership and there is something
for everyone in the family to take part in and enjoy.
Joining an organization or volunteering is a great
way to meet your neighbors and make new friends!
Let us know if there is something that you’d like
more information on, we’ll be glad to point you in
the right direction.
We hope that you enjoy this issue as much as we
enjoy providing it to you.
Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Fall.

The Welcoming Doors of Springside There are several new families in Springside and we hope you love living here! In Springside we want to be a
welcoming community. The doors of Springside featured on this page are places to go that you can be assured you
are welcome. Can you tell where these doors are? If you are a long- time resident how many do you know without
checking? How many have you walked through? Find the answers elsewhere in this paper. Thanks to JJ Musqua for
taking these pictures. He shows up in a couple of them as a reflection of his good work!

John and Katherine Byblow
Family Reunion -Submitted by Julie C. Brooks
John Byblow was born in Knizewski, Ukraine in 1893 and
Katherine Fedun was born in Beele, Ukraine in 1897. In
1906, on separate voyages, they braved the unknown
with their families and crossed an ocean to begin a new
life in a strange new land called Canada. When John
and Katherine arrived in Canada, they settled only as
few miles apart, where they met and fell in love. They
were united in Holy Matrimony at St. Mary’s church in
Yorkton, SK on November 23, 1915 and farmed in the
Springside area; they had 13 children.
Ninty Seven years after John and Katherine were
married, on July 21 – 22, 2012 the descendants of John
and Katherine Byblow gathered over 100 strong at the
Springside Arena to reunite, reminisce and enjoy each
others company. Cousins, Aunts, Uncles, and
Grandchildren arrived from as far east as Ontario, as far
West as Vancouver and as far North as the Yukon
Territory. There are approximately 300 descendants of
John and Katherine, so to have one third of the family
together after all these years was a blessing.
On display during the weekend was a table of photo
albums and memorabilia contributed by each family.
Each album told a story as we caught up on each others
lives and met new cousins or reunited with cousins we
hadn’t seen in years. The table designated for John and
Katherine displayed beautiful pictures of John and
Katherine as young adults and one gazed in wonder at
their memorabilia; how did they do it; how did they
manage? It made us drift back in time; it was a moment
I’m sure many had that day. This table also included a
picture tribute to Adele, Steve, Vincent and Minnie who
are gone but not forgotten.
This reunion was a celebration of roots and hearts and
beyond all the visiting, in fine Ukrainian tradition we
enjoyed a fabulous banquet (with perogies of course)
followed by a program which included a special tribute
to our Grandparents and a variety of family talent. Who
knew we had so many terrific, singers, dancers,
musicians and much more of all ages. After a beautiful
fireworks show, those who caught a second wind
continued on with Karoke into the wee hours of the
morning.
On Sunday, following a great barbeque, the family
World Series ball game at the Springside School was a
demonstration of athletic talent second to none.
Players aged from six to seventy six showcased a game
that was a delight to watch. Kudos to the score keeper,
who in the absence of pen and paper found a clever
way to mark score. A huge thank you to our cousin for
the contents of his cooler when it was realized no one
remembered to bring water. We forgot to appoint a
manager for the teams!
We would like to thank everyone who helped to make
this Reunion a huge success and we extend a special
Thank You to the SRA and staff of the Town of
Springside for being very accommodating and providing
assistance whenever it was possible to do so. The
venue allowed for ample space to visit and to set up a
children’s area without bumping into each other.
Our Reunion was a dedication to our Grandparents, but
more than that, it gave us all a chance to reconnect as a
family. We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful
family. All Because John and Katherine fell in Love.
One Third of the the descendants of John T. Byblow and
Katherine Byblow nee Fedun are shown here as they
gathered for a Family Reunion on July 21, and 22, 2012 at
the Springside Arena.

Lunchbox Treat
Bunny Blondies -Marion Ockochinski
“These are from the "Family
Fun" magazine as a
suggestion for lunch box
treats. They sound sooooo goooood. I like the way to
test for doneness at the end as I'm never quite sure
when a brownie is right. I think a stick of butter would
be a half cup???”
8 medium carrots (about 3 cups grated)
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
2 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 sticks butter, softened
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1/3 cup sugar
2 large eggs
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 cup butterscotch chips
1 cup finely chopped walnuts (optional)
Adjust the oven rack to the centre and pre-heat
oven to 350 F. Coat a 9x13" pan with cooking
spray. Peal and grate carrots quite fine. In a
medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking
soda, cinnamon and salt. Set aside. Blend the
butter and both sugars until pale and fluffy, about
3 minutes. Add eggs and vanilla and continue
beating on medium until well blended. Reduce the
speed to low and add the carrots. Mix in
butterscotch chips and walnuts. With a large
spoon blend the flour mixture into the wet
ingredients, scraping down the side of the bowl as
you work. Pour the batter into the prepared dish
and use a large spoon or spatula to spread evenly.
Bake the batter, rotating the pan halfway through,
until it has risen slightly and the top has formed a
thin, brittle crust, about 30-35 minutes. Do not
over bake. To test for doneness, insert toothpicks
1 inch from the edge, 2 inches from the edge, and
in the centre. The first toothpick should come out
clean, the second with a little batter and the third
with a little more batter. Place the pan on a wire
rack and let cool completely. Run a knife around
the rim of the pan, then divide into 24 bars.
Healthy Lunch Box Suggestions
With childhood obesity on the rise, teaching
children to eat right is important. Packing lunch
boxes can be a daunting experience. Here are a
few ideas to get you on the right track.
-Pack an assortment of whole-grain crackers, low-
fat cheeses and low-sodium cold-cuts Make your
own type of “lunchables” with cubes of cheese,
ham, turkey pepperoni, and different fruits.”
-Take a large piece of whole grain bread and roll it
as flat as you can, then spread peanut butter on it,
place a whole peeled banana lengthwise across the
bread and roll it up and cut like sushi. (Please keep in
mind that the school is a peanut free zone)
-Take some leftover chicken bits, cheddar cheese
and salsa, put in between two tortillas and
microwave or put in a frying pan.
Springside Library Hosts
Len Gadica at the Hall
On August 13 the Springside Library hosted a
performance by Len Gadica at the Springside Hall.
A wonderful time was had by all who attended.
Len explained that the accordion is an instrument
which can make musical sounds that take us round
the world and with the aid of a variety of goofy
hats proceeded to show us. Some of the local
children helped the show along with tongue
twisters and others danced Macarena and the
usually circular bird dance which gave the audience
a hilarious lesson in why it needs to be danced in a
CIRCLE! Thanks to those who attended and a huge
thank-you to Len Gadica for the great show.
Len Gadica from Melville treated his audience
to a fun filled afternoon of music at the
Springside Hall.

Tam & Sam Walk Against Violence
To Whom It May Concern,
On March 12, 2011 Tammy Lynn Kulaway and her Dog
Sammy were tragically taken from us. In

this walk is to Create light in Someone’s Darkness. To
create awareness on the attributes of violence against
people and animals. This year the family has decided
to partner up with Guardian Angel Animal Rescue a
non-profit organization in support of raising funds for
their safe haven and rescue for animals, one of the
things that Tammy was very passionate about. We are
asking for any donations that may be used as prizes
towards the reward of participants, in the raffles to
raise funds for Guardian Angel Animal Rescue or any

Springside Library Notes
- Marion Ockochinski
It was a wonderful and
busy summer at the
Library this summer.
There were twenty
children signed up with
the T.D. Summer
Reading Program and
when all the counting
was done at summer’s end they had read 140
books. Fifteen BOGO coupons from Scoops were
given out. There were seven club meetings, eight
Bingo sessions, one movie and popcorn afternoon,
a scavenger hunt, thirteen craft sessions, one
entertainer performer, numerous sessions at the
Lego table and a cupcake party to end things off.
WHEW!!
A huge thank you goes out to Nicole and the
Scoops staff for the BOGO coupons. I’m sure the
readers enjoyed the tasty treats.
Thank-you to the T.D. Bank for funding this
program (now across Canada) which encourages
reading through the summer months and supplies
libraries with posters, booklets , stickers and
librarian manuals as well as the on line website
which many of our children enjoyed all summer
long at the library’s computers and available to
anyone from home on their own computers.
Lots of fun for everyone.
Thanks to Saffron and Katrina for planning the
scavenger hunt and thanks to all the kids who
participated all summer long.
Now that the
posters have come
down and the
Legos have been
packed up, the
“Imagination
Reading Tent” has
been used, won by
Kendra Audette and taken to its new home and the
library looks the same as it
did, it is time to look forward
to a new group of 3, 4 and 5
year olds coming to
Storyhour!
Children who have reached
the age of three are welcome
to come down on Friday
mornings to enjoy stories, songs, activities and
crafts from 10 a.m.-11 a.m.
A note to everyone: Your library is here for
everyone, not just kids. You have access to a whole
province’s library’s collections using your library
card and your computer. If you need more
information on how to use this feature or you need
to use the computer, please stop by the library for
a demonstration. If you don’t have a library card,
bring two pieces of ID showing your address and
you will have it before you leave the library.
Your tax dollars pay for the library so get the best
for your investment and Use Your Library!
Autumn or Fall? The term “fall” is
believed to have originated not because of the
fall of leaves from the trees, but because it is
the season when the sun falls below the
equator to spring back up again six months
United Church of Canada
Welcomes Intern Minister
Springside United
Church would like to
extend a warm
welcome to Laurie
Howard who is our
intern minister for the
next four months.
Laurie is a candidate for ordained ministry in the
United Church of Canada and belongs to Crescent
Fort Rouge United Church in Winnipeg.
Working on a Masters of Divinity degree at the
Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax, she will be
doing the first half of her internship with the
United Church congregations of Theodore and
Springside from Sept. to Dec. 2012. The second
part of her internship will be a Global Partnership
in Jamaica from January to April, 2012.
Laurie has developed and implemented many inter-
generational programs that work towards building
strong communities and build bridges between
seniors and children. This work was recognized with
an Humanitarian Award in 2011 from the Fred
Douglas Society in Winnipeg. Her work with senior
volunteers in literacy programs produced hundreds
of Storysacks (literacy tools) for new learners,
immigrant and refuge families.
Laurie is an international storyteller and has been
heard at Storytelling festivals in Winnipeg, Ottawa
and Cape Breton and overseas in England and
Thailand. She was a part of a team of Storytellers
that developed storytelling techniques that address
memory loss in Aphasia and Alzheimer patients.
She continues to lead workshops on this fascinating
topic that encourage brain health for all ages.
Laurie was the Camp Director at Camp Brereton, a
United Church Bible camp for Explorers and CGIT
for many glee filled years. She continued her love
for youth ministry as the youth minister at Crescent
Fort Rouge United Church (CFRUC). She enjoyed
being a part of the Worship Committee and chaired
the committee for two years. CFRUC is a vibrant
and busy community that is dedicated to non-
violent social justice both locally and globally and

Thanksgiving 2012
“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns
what we have into enough, and more. It turns
denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion
to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house

Do not stand at my grave
and weep
Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's
hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there, I did not die.

A History of Halloween The word "Halloween" is derived from All Hallows Eve, which occurs on November 1. The "All Hollows Day" or "All Saints Day". It is an important date on the Catholic calendar, a time to observe and honor saints.
People believed that the souls of the dead come back to earth to visit their families or friends. People began to call November 1st as a holy or "Hallowed" day. It was to be called All Hallow's Day. Which was later shortened to what we know today as Halloween.
In the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. This was called Samhain pronounced sow-en). This was the Celtic New Year.
The disembodied spirits of everyone who had died throughout the year would return to seek living bodies to possess for the following year. It was their afterlife or Panati.
On the night of October 31, all those living used to extinguish fires in their homes and make them cold and undesirable. They also dressed in ghoulish costumes and made noisy parades as a way to discourage and frighten away these spirits.
Several stories speak of Celts burning someone at the stake that was perceived to be evil or possessed, as a demonstration to those spirits.
In the first century AD, Romans abandoned the sacrifice of humans in favor of burning effigies. Over the centuries, as people became less believing in the supernatural, the practices became more ritualized. However people still enjoyed dressing up as: hobgoblins, ghosts, and witches. This became increasingly more ceremonial.
In the 1840's, Halloween traditions were brought to America by Irish immigrants fleeing their country's potato famine. The favorite pranks in New England included tipping over outhouses and unhinging fence gates.
Trick-or-Treating is believed to have originated with a ninth-century European custom called "souling". All Souls Day (November 2), early Christians used to walk from village to village begging for "soul cakes". These cakes were made out of square pieces of bread with currants. The more soul cakes the beggars would receive, the more prayers they would promise to say on behalf of the dead relatives of the donors. At the time, it was believed that the dead remained in limbo after death. People thought that prayers could help hasten a soul's passage to heaven. Jack O'Lantern's Story is fascinating one about the Irishman named Jack who was a notorious drunkard and trickster. Halloween has grown out of rituals of the Celts celebrating a new year, from Medieval prayer rituals of Europeans, and the Irish legend of Jack O'Lantern

A nurse was sent to collect a new skeleton from the medical supply store. When she arrived at the
doctor’s office there was already a waiting room full of patients. As the nurse wrestled the skeleton
through the outside door she became aware of people staring at her.
She gave them a smile and said, 'I am bringing him to the doctor.'
An old lady said sympathetically, 'My dear! Isn't he a bit late for the doctor?'
How to make it: 1. Submerge a peeled apple for about 5 minutes in water with 2 tablespoons of salt and the juice
from one lemon.
2. Then use a skewer to carve eyes, a nose, and a mouth. The bigger the features, the more
dramatic the outcome.
3. Set the carved apple in a warm spot and watch the face of your wise friend emerge over the
next two weeks.
Granny Smith A little apple becomes an adorable granny 'face' with this easy-to-create craft
also makes for a fun fall or Halloween decoration.
What you'll need:
- One peeled apple - Juice from one lemon
- 2 Tbsp salt - Carving tool

The Gardener’s Corner
Preparing your Yard for Winter
The following hints are taken from Better
Homes and Gardens on getting your yard and
garden winter-ready.
Cut back dry stems of perennials to soil
level after frost to neaten the garden
and remove pest eggs and disease
spores that may linger. Leave stems
with attractive seed heads for winter
interest.
Compost dead plant debris to create an
organic soil conditioner. Hot, active piles
kill weed seeds and disease pathogens;
passive, inactive piles do not. Throw
questionable plant material in the trash.
Cut off diseased foliage from evergreen
plants and shrubs and discard it in the
trash. Rake up and discard the old,
disease-bearing mulch.
To prevent rodents from nesting in the
soil, wait until the ground freezes
before adding a 6-inch layer of organic
material as winter mulch.
Mulch perennial and shrub beds with
pine needles or chopped leaves. This
protects both plant roots and the soil
and moderates the effects of extreme
temperature changes during winter
freezes and thaws.
Mulch bulb beds with evergreen boughs
to protect the soil from shifting and
cracking during the winter. Otherwise
plants, especially small, shallowly
planted bulbs, can be heaved to the
surface
Protect the tender bark of young trees
from gnawing critters by wrapping
stems or trunks with wire or commercial
tree-guard products.
Screen evergreens, particularly exposed
broad-leaved types, from drying winter
wind and sun by setting up burlap
screens or shade cloth shelters.

Autumn/Winter Hints -Check all the weather stripping on doors. Even
a small leak can cause a large heat loss.
-Run fingers around window frames if you feel
any drafts, caulk around them. (If you aren't
able to do it ask someone to do it for you)
-If you are washing windows a tbsp. of
cornstarch in your water helps to cut the film on
your windows
-Check batteries in smoke alarms
-Clean or replace furnace filters
-If you use dryer sheets, wash the lint traps, as
dryer sheets can build up a waxy film and curb
proper air flow
-Check sheds to make sure that there are no
holes that go underneath as animals are looking
for homes. There are a lot of skunks and
raccoons this year and no one needs them
around.
