●An Increase in ViolenceIn the fall of 2012, the Springfield Police Department recognized a significant increase in aggravated assaults. Research by the SPD’s Crime Analysis Unit found the upturn was directly linked to domestic assaults. Seventy percent of all aggravated assaults in Springfield were found to be domestic related.
●Statistics At the end of 2012, the SPD logged 2,476 domestic violence incidents for the year; this averages to over 6 incidents per day. The total amount of incidents had increased from 2,207 in 2011. ●Just the first half of 2013 (January-June) showed another high
amount of 1,319 domestic violence incidents. There are by far more victims of domestic violence in Springfield than local shelters are able to house.
