Summary of Meeting with DEP
• Identified key issues and priorities:
• Topography, lack of storm sewers, high water table,
potential benefits of green infrastructure.
• Discussed current and planned projects:
• Fourth phase of 20-year sewer build-out under
construction.
• Planning of Phase 5 is in progress--$20M project for
add’l build-out of storm and sanitary sewers and water
mains.
• Next Steps:
• DEP will identify small components of ongoing
storm sewer build-out that are currently unfunded but
could be quickly implemented to resolve localized
flooding.

• Evacuation Centers and Routes:
• OEM has established evacuation centers, but
encourages residents to evacuate to family and
friends.
• Evacuation routes are not made public because 80%
of evacuees do not go to evacuation centers.
• Community Programs:
• Homebound Evacuation Program; Community
Emergency Response Teams (CERT); Community
Disaster Network; Citizen Corps.
• Priorities
• Improved outreach and communication; Pilot non-
profit planning with COADs; Establishment of
Resource and Recovery Centers.

• DCP Activity
• Rezoning in Springfield Gardens (2005),
Brookville (2004), and Rosedale (2010) to
maintain community character.
• Residential Streetscape Preservation amendment
to zoning resolution (2010) enforces front yard
planting requirements.
• Expressed support for implementation of DEP’s
drainage plan to reduce stormwater flooding.
• Expressed support for the Proposed Greater
JFK IBID to help mediate between residents and
businesses (especially concern over truck traffic).
