As we face the future and the “uncertainty” that accompanies

it, we find comfort, peace, and familularity in those things

from our past. Historical references will influence color,

fabric, print, and pattern this Spring 2010. The consumer

will cherish, with love, objects that brought her comfort from

a day gone by, resulting in a sense of “fragility,” and a

precious sense of being.

As she enters a new day, uncertain colors are beautiful,

dusted with a gentle powder, and fabrics are fragile.

Evoking a perishable feeling with the times, both are

importantly fused with a new spirit and energy, that is our

hope, a bold optimum.

We will see it in unexpected combinations, parings, and

innovations. Most importantly, technology impacts what

is “old vintage” with high impact such as shine, shimmer, and fabrics.

The modern consumer seeks comfort and newness.

The retailer must inspire her to spend with cutting-edge

“everything.” Do not underestimate her. From sequins for day,

to social media by night, ShopNBC is going to lead.

Spring 2009 The Shift in Color Spring 2010 Action Points

GreensThe grass green of ‘09

becomes muted,

resulting in a beautiful

sage and seafoam

green.

Rich luxurious purple

becomes blue-cast for

Spring ‘10, and lilac

tones are icy.

The rich cobalt

blue of ‘09 becomes

watery tones of icy

and indigo blues.

Luxurious Purple

Lipstick Tones The lipstick tones

of ‘09 become

pale and subtle, while

shades of coral become

increasingly important.

Black & White The essential black and

white must-have of ‘09

stays a consistent key,

with grey playing an

equally important role.

Cobalt Blue

Vibrant Yellow The bright yellow of

Spring ‘09 becomes

red-cast, while shades

of buttermilk are

equally critical.

Icy blues and indigos are

the #1 fashion color call-out.

Plan this color at double digit

penetration.

Intensify denim-it is

definitely peeking.

Pinks become much more

“orange-cast” resulting in coral.

Maximize in all categories as the

“new pink.”

Lilac is seen as an important

first quarter color in solid, and in print.

Spring ‘10’s icy colors look fresh

worn head to toe.

Seafoam green is a significant shift

from last years emerald, and

should be maximized in both

apparel, handbags, and jewelry.

This color looks newest when

teamed with black.

Down-trending in importance

from 2009.

The newness is in the “level” of

intensity.

Black and white shifts into new

combo of grey and nude.

This is a dramatic evolution and

should be validated quickly in the

contemporary business.

Once validated, shift

5-10% of black and white

dollars, in total, to this new

combo.
