COMPETE Verrado BarracudasThe Verrado Village Barracudas participated in the Arizona Central Region Championship where many of the girls achieved personal best times and state times. Makenna Crawford and Paloma Marolf qualified for state. Good Luck Girls!

Welcome to spring, everyone! And congratulations to our dedicated Greatest Loser participants! We are so impressed and excited for this dedicated group, who lost 795.70 combined pounds while gaining an incredible amount of knowledge, confidence and new Village friends.

your resortevery daymeet your managers

I’m sure at the beginning of the program eight weeks seemed like an eternity, but if you ask the contestants now, they would say the time flew by and was a lot of fun! Changing one’s habits in only eight weeks and learning about new, healthy ways to live one’s life is really not a long time at all. Great job!

I personally enjoyed watching the “GL” contestants filtering into the Clubs with their “GL 2010” t-shirts on, tackling their challenges, attending seminars, and walking around proud of their dedication. Even the Village employees were super-excited about the Greatest Loser challenges, as is apparent by the photo of Leslie Bentley, Verrado’s Assistant GM getting involved and participating in the fun. Everyone’s energy was great and contagious. Congratulations to everyone who took advantage of this Village program.

We look forward to a wonderful spring at the Village. With spring’s arrival comes the perfect Arizona weather—enabling everyone to enjoy the Village pools, splash gardens, and patio areas.

A time for renewal, a time to rejuvenate and the perfect time to reacquaint yourself with friends and your health.

We’ll see you at the Club!

"I’m trying to lose weight and haven’t been very successful. One

of my good friends is losing weight on a low-carbohydrate

diet. I thought those weren’t healthy, but she said her

doctor told her that it was okay. What’s the truth on this?"

I’m sorry to hear you are hitting a wall in your weight loss success. One thing I would recommend if you aren’t doing so already is to consult with a registered dietitian and certified fitness professional who can individualize a plan that works best for your lifestyle.

When speaking of a “low-carb” diet, which is typically high in fat and protein such as the popular Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution, you may risk long-term health problems. “Low-carb” diets may lead to weight loss but are nutritionally inadequate and can cause negative side effects including constipation, diarrhea, headaches, insomnia, fatigue, and nausea. Short-term weight loss is triggered through a process called ketosis. Ketosis occurs whenever the body lacks a sufficient supply of carbohydrates, a prime energy source. During ketosis, carbohydrate-depleted metabolisms turn to other sources, including ketones from stored

fat or protein, to satisfy daily energy needs. The initial weight loss is water weight which is from the carbohydrates stored in muscle tissue. As you continue to lose weight on a low-carb diet, you will lose some fat, but primarily muscle tissue. When we lose muscle, our metabolism slows greatly because muscle utilizes nutrients much better than fat does resulting in an increase risk of weight gain post low-carb dieting. Besides, our bodies need carbohydrates to burn body fat efficiently. Our brains can only function on carbohydrates too.

I suggest to you and your friend to incorporate nutrient-rich carbohydrates back into your weight loss nutrition game plans. Examples of this are: whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, and beans along with lean sources of protein and healthy unsaturated fats to rev up your metabolism. Good luck! Remember, this is a lifestyle change. People that go on diets tend to go off of them only to get back on them again.

Chrissy Barth, RD, DC Ranch Club Nutritionist

Overnight, while we sleep, our bodies also work hard to repair, to rebuild and to maintain itself, so our energy (via blood glucose) reserves usually are already low when we wake up. By skipping breakfast, our glucose and energy levels go even lower and we are likely to hit that "mid-morning slump" or be

“ravenous” by mid-afternoon.

Consequences for Missing BreakfastSome may compensate by raiding the vending machine, gorging on high-fat, fast foods at lunch, or bingeing on junk foods later in the day. Sound familiar? And missing breakfast does not necessarily make daily calorie intake lower, because so often many more calories (high fat, empty calorie, less nutritious snacks and larger portions) are often eaten later to relieve our hunger. Over time, eating a nutritious breakfast will help you maintain a healthier weight by preventing this “overeating syndrome” from occurring. Eating a healthy breakfast daily leads to a consistently higher intake of important vitamins, minerals, and fiber; and positively impacts exercise by providing more energy for longer workouts.

The Ideal BreakfastThe ideal breakfast is low in total and saturated fat, cholesterol, and simple sugar and higher in fiber, complex carbohydrates, B & C vitamins, and calcium. Be sure to include adequate protein (i.e., non/lowfat yogurt, skim milk, nonfat cream cheese, Egg Beaters) to help keep you satisfied longer. A bowl of high fiber, low sugar cereal, topped with fruit and skim milk, a glass of 100% orange juice, and a slice of whole grain toast is a nutritious way to start the day. Even if your day starts very early or your schedule is hectic, it's a quick and easy breakfast that will give your body and brain the energy needed to carry you successfully through the day.

For more information on how to start your day in a healthy, energetic way and to improve your dietary habits, contact Registered Dietitian, Marsha Rohan MS, RD at 602.840.6412.

it’sgreatbeing a loser

The Village Greatest Loser Program is the best program to kick start new workout habits! Three hundred Village members and friends participated in the “GL” program—having fun, while getting motivated, energized, challenged and rewarded for making real-life changes to their health habits for the better. For eight weeks members and their teammates motivated and pushed each other to help reach their goals. How did they do it?

Everyone starts somewhere… In beginning, everyone’s body composition was measured; fat percentage, lean mass percentage, fat weight, lean weight, estimated metabolic rate and total weight. This was all done with the BOD POD, a very scientific way to receive accurate measurements of body composition. The information gained from the BOD POD enabled the Village fitness professionals to set individual goals for each participant. The body composition numbers helped the trainers gauge how to set individual fitness and health goals. These goals were challenging, yet attainable.

You don’t have to go on national TV to participate in a challenging and results-driven group competition. There is one right in your own backyard here at the Village.

How does the competition work? The competition is based on a point system. The teams each earned points for workouts, team challenges, weekly lectures, trainings, nutrition choices, etc. There were also points awarded for Club specific workouts, bi-weekly team challenges, weekly lectures and workouts on your own.

The winning team is the team who earned the most points throughout the competition. In addition, there is an overall weight loss winner. And there were also wonderful incentives based on what percentage each individual reached of his/her goal. For example, each DC Ranch GL participant received a percentage off a spa service based on what percentage of their goal they attained. For example, reach 50% of your goal—the participant received 50% off a spa service! Fantastic.

Obesity and the diseases of a sedentary lifestyle threaten not only our health, but our mental and spiritual energy as well. Technogym and Village Health Clubs & Spas realize this problem, and together are offering solutions to diminish this threat. The objective has become to reestablish the correct balance between mind and body through movement, thus improving the quality of life.

In March 2005, Technogym launched Kinesis—an innovative and unique system that focuses on movement through balance, flexibility and strength. Not a machine, but an experience, the Kinesis wall is constructed of four panels with cables, grips and weight stacks that allow movements to be easy, natural and without restrictions. Kinesis provides over 500 exercises and movements to improve strength, flexibility and balance.

Users of all ability levels and backgrounds can receive positive benefits with Kinesis. Those looking to burn more calories while toning up will find that functional training on Kinesis uses more muscle groups than traditional strength training, and the result is a 30% higher caloric expenditure. Kinesis helps to train and restore balance with movements that simulate everyday activities, making it a useful tool for rehab patients, active aging members, de-conditioned users and anyone looking to strengthen the connection between mind and body. Athletes find that Kinesis programs can be designed to mimic their sport to help maximize performance.

Train with the Kinesis system at Village Health Clubs & Spas and watch your body’s transformation. For more information visit us online at www.villageclubs.com

Most of us know him as the verbal, energetic, opinionated and world-class tennis player. With more than 150 singles and doubles titles, McEnroe has achieved an unparalleled record of achievement in the world of tennis. Most people don’t know, however, that he is also very involved in the art world. John McEnroe oversees The John McEnroe Gallery in New York City, where he collects and trades art, while also showing the work of contemporary artists. Surprisingly, he also has some world known artists friends, like world-renowned Phoenix College alumna, Eric Fischl. In April, the art and tennis world will come together at the Phoenix Art Museum and the Camelback Village Racquet & Health Club. On Wednesday, April 14 The Eric Fischl Lecture Series will feature John McEnroe, “We Can Be Serious.”

On April 15, a charity tennis event will be held at the Camelback Village Racquet & Health Club, benefiting the Fischl Scholars Program and the John and Patty McEnroe Foundation. Enjoy this two day event of art, tennis, and a seriously great time!

The Phoenix College Eric Fischl Lecture Series presenting John McEnroe “We Can Be Serious” will be held at the Phoenix Art Museum in the Whitman Hall at 7 PM on Wednesday April 14. This event is free and open to the public. For tickets and more information regarding the tennis event on April 15, starting at 6 pm, contact Judi Buterbaugh at [email protected].

Thai Massage is often called Thai yoga massage, as the therapist uses his/her hands, knees, legs and feet to move you into a series of yoga-like stretches. The massage is performed on a traditional Thai floor mat, and the client wears loose, comfortable clothing. No oils are used in this massage. The benefits of Thai massage include increased flexibility, improved circulation and a centering of the mind and body.

Two of DC Ranch’s massage therapists, Heather Blascak and Patricia Sotomayor recently traveled to Thailand to experi-ence and learn the technique of Thai massage, while also immersing themselves in the Thai Culture.

Full Moon Flow Yoga Workshop In January, Karin McAreavy put on a wildly successful Full Moon Flow Yoga workshop. Within the scope of the workout, held on the first night of the full moon, members learned ways to let go of those things in our lives that keep us from moving forward and embracing the life we want to lead free of emotional and relational handicaps. It was a truly inspirational experience for all.

Verrado Village 6th Anniversary Party Verrado Village held its 6th Anniversary Party on Saturday, February 6. With a country western theme, the night featured live music from “The Desert Knights” and gambling tables.

Verrado Member Designated Arizona CultureKeeper of 2009 Verlyne Meck, an executive member of the Verrado Village Sport & Health Club, was designated an Arizona CultureKeeper of 2009. As an author and historian, Verlyne has a passion for preserving Buckeye history and authored her first book on the city, Images of America: Buckeye, in 2007. She is currently finishing her second book, Images of America: Buckeye Then and Now, which will be released in 2010.

In 1984, she was selected as Grand Canyon University’s “Alumnus of the Year” followed by “Buckeye Citizen of the Year” in 1988 and “Community Volunteer of the Year” in 2005. At her retirement from teaching school, a co-teacher described her best as “an important part of Arizona…a woman who is welcoming, gentle, yet tough as the state itself.” Congratulations Verlyne!

Verrado Founder's Day Rock 'N Walk On Saturday morning the Verrado Village Sport and Health Club sponsored “Rock ‘N Walk” in honor of Founder’s Day. Residents encountered obstacles along the three mile walk while enjoying music from the Verrado High School band. At the end of the walk there were raffle prizes and breakfast!

Heart & Soul Yoga Workshop In February Karin held another yoga-based work-shop called Heart & Soul. Attendees each received a complementary CD of the music used in the workshop. We explored self -love as means of being able to be a more confident loving person.

Using movement, breathing and inspirational guidance from Karin, some members were moved to tears by their experience.

Quartz Zen Hike In March Linda Hertzberg and Karin took a group of members on a Quartz Zen Hike on the 8A trail. The weather was fantastic and so made the nature hike a completely positive experience. There is a giant Quartz rock on the trail. Every person on the hike was given a piece of quartz and told the significance of quartz to add even more interest to the hike.

NIA Nite Out On March 5th we held our first NIA NITE OUT. NIA is a free form dance movement class that is done barefoot. Fluid movement and a well trained instructor (Casey Barish) provide and amazing physical yet musical experience. NIAfites from all over the city met at Camelback Village on Friday night for an hour of movement then retired to the V-Lounge for Happy Hour. Everyone got Spa discount coupons, free guest passes and discount coupons for a glass of wine in the V-Lounge.

Cycle for Survival On February 1, the Village clubs participated in Cycle for Survival, a special fundraising campaign centered around cycling classes to raise money for cancer research. Through our members’ generosity on that one day, the Village raised $4500 for this special organization. For more information or to make a donation of your own please check out the Cycle for Survival website, cycleforsurvival.org. Thank you!Verrado Founder's

Day Concert The band “Big Bad Voo Doo Daddy” played at the Verrado Founder’s Day concert on Saturday, Feb. 27. Many residents had taken the free Swing Dance lessons in preparation and exhibited fine form on the dance floor.

Sue and Bill Quigg are the kind of people who always have smiles on their faces. They go to the Village on Camelback nearly every day, and spend as much time laughing and talking to people there as they do working out.

In fact, Sue likes to strike up a conversation when she’s exercising in the pool or on the track. “I can get into some really heavy discussions,” she says. “I like the Village activities where you can interact with others such as in the weight room.”

Bill and Sue immersed themselves in Village life after bouts with cancer inspired them to become more health-conscious. “We were always active,” recalls Bill.

“And now we’re proactive about staying healthy and fit.”

Having been married for 48 years, the Quiggs agree that a sense of humor is one of the most important assets for a good life. Through cancers, surgeries, and other challenges, they’ve kept smiling and look forward to getting the most out of life—and helping others do the same—no matter what the future holds.

We met the Quiggs in the V Lounge for a delightful conversation about life, health, happiness, and hope.

How do you both maintain such a good attitude? bill quigg I’m a product of my work as a strategic consultant, and I believe that innovation, creativity, and other positive qualities come from your belief system. You have to change your paradigm. What you believe about things and what you do about

them makes all the difference. You know the saying, “Prayers have feet?” Well, you can wish and hope and pray all you want, but nothing’s going to happen if you don’t set a goal, make a plan, and do something.

sue quigg I think we’ve really always just been like this. I don’t think you can share your life with others if you’re not grateful for what you have. I will say, though, that after my cancer I started seeing things differently and noticing things more. The sky looks bluer, and the mountains are more majestic.

Was it hard dealing with your cancer? sq I always thought that it was going to be okay. When you have a strong faith and a good attitude towards life, you’re ready for the battle.”

What brought you to Arizona? bq We were living in Indiana and had a place in Phoenix when I got prostate cancer 13 years ago. We had a discussion about what each of us would do if the other person died, and we both said that we’d move to Arizona. So we just did it then and have been having a great time ever since.

How did you find the Village? bq We didn’t know about the Village until we moved into the neighborhood seven years ago. We discovered this marvelous place and have been coming here at least six days a week ever since.

What do you like best about it? sq Oh, it’s like belonging to a country club without a golf course. I think that I enjoy my friends here as well as I do at church! Everyone is so pleasant and easy to talk

to. After my knee surgery last August, I’d go around the track with my pink poles, and so many members would cheer me on and give me encouragement.

bq I like to joke that the Village is my million-dollar hamburger place. Where else can you get a $5 burger with such an amazing view? Seriously, for me the staff is what makes it happen at the Village. They’re the people we see consistently whenever we come here to work out. So we introduced ourselves to everyone when we joined here, and we make a point to interact with them all the time.

sq I really enjoy visiting with John, Judi, Kim, Ben, Clyde, and the training staff. Not to mention all the friendly people at the front desk!

bq That’s why we take separate cars.

Has working out at the Village helped you in your other activities? bq Oh, yes. We like to go rafting down the Colorado River every summer, and cross country skiing is our sport. Working out on the treadmill and lifting weights has been really good for me. Plus I get to have a piece of pie about five nights a week…Marie Callender’s Rhubarb is my favorite!

sq The Village is great because I can always find an exercise activity to help me rehab my knee replacement.

How did you hurt your knee? sq From six years of cheerleading. Two in high school and four at Indiana University.

bq Did you know she was the only four-year cheerleader in Indiana University history?

How did you meet? sq We’re from the same town. I first saw him when I was 14, and we got married when I was 25 and he was 28.

Did you both go to the same college? sq No. Bill went to the University of Virginia.

Besides going to the Village, rafting, and skiing, what else do you do with your time? bq I still work on projects occasionally, I like photography, and we both do a lot of volunteer work. We’re on the Leadership Council of the Wellness Community. We also do newcomer orientations for them every month and distribute their calendars to doctors’ offices throughout the Valley.

sq It’s a great opportunity for us to connect with people who are dealing with cancer and going through chemotherapy. The Wellness Community helped me when I was fighting breast cancer.

bq We also call on people with cancer as Stephen Ministers, a lay ministry through our church.

sq And for four years, we ran the merchandising program for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.”

bq We raised enough money doing that to add a grant every year for four years.

Is there any advice you can give people for finding happiness? bq On top of what we already discussed, I like to remind myself and others that life is the people you associate with and the books you read.

sq He reads about it…I do it!

bq She does things because I read about them!

sq Like we said before, just keep a sense of humor and realize that no matter what happens to you, life is good…And it’s even better at the Village!”

For Village members Sue and Bill Quigg, humor and gratitude are the keys to overcoming obstacles.

Sue and Bill Quigg.

◊ With family.

life is good ...even when it's challenging
