Landscapes: Acrylic Glazing PaintingAll Skill Levels, Young Adults & Adults Instructor: Chester Kasnowski

You will learn to paint in Acrylics with the result looking like an oil painting. This is accomplished using glazing techniques. The main advantage of oil paints is its slow drying aspect which allows blend-ing and oil paints are generally deeper and richer in color. By glazing Acrylics with gel medium and thin transparent layers you can achieve rich colors and blend better. And using the fast drying quality of Acrylic you will be able to finish a painting during each class. The subject of landscapes is perfect for this technique; allowing the stu-dent to work on location. I will give a brief talk on the day’s task, like how to paint convincing water, or how to paint dynamic skies and then I’ll give individual instruction to each student. This allows all levels of skill to join the class. (Meets in W-10)

Opening the Photographer’s EyeIntermediate, Young Adults & Adults Instructor: Mark Gilvey

This class is designed to teach you how to get visual ideas across through time-tested composition principles. It is for the photog-rapher who already has a basic understanding of how to use their camera—not a beginner. Each week will include demonstrations and discussion about composition principles that will help you commu-nicate your visual ideas more affectively. We’ll review tools in Adobe Lightroom for post-processing your images. There are in-class group activities, weekly assignments with follow-up review and critique, and fun ongoing out-of-class photography projects for those who can’t get enough. In short, there will be as much or as little of photography as your time permits. It does not matter what type of camera you use as long as you know how to get a good exposure out of it—this course is not for the absolute beginner. If you own a non-DSLR cam-era (like a mobile phone for example) you will be introduced to terms and techniques that only apply to DSLR camera owners, but don’t let that deter you—they are minimal. If you want to bring your laptop and use your own post-processing software and follow along as I demo Lightroom, you are welcome to do so. The class will have Win-dows computers that have Lightroom on them, just bring a thumb drive from home to transfer your files to the computer. Apple people, Windows works similar to Mac, I will assist you. Do not take this class if you want to learn everything there is to know about mobile pho-tography, Adobe Lightroom or how your camera works. This is a class about composition that uses Lightroom as a tool, so the work we’ll do is just enough that students can complete assignments. It is not a course about how to use your camera although it will be lightly touched on as needed. (Meets in W-3, 304)

Fine art photography is distinct from other genres of photography such as journalistic, “street “documentary, wedding/portrait in that its goal is to evoke an emotional reaction from the viewer that is dependent on the viewer’s experiences. This course explores what these elements are and how to utilize them to create images that en-gage and challenge the viewer. This class is comprised of a seminar style discussion illustrated with examples from the instructor and the participants and “live” processing of the participants’ raw captures into final images. The processing will utilize Adobe Lightroom, Pho-toshop and the NIK software plugins. Raku: Western Raku All Skill Levels Instructor: Bill Schran

The process of raku was developed in Japan in the 1500’s and be-came integral as the ceremonial tea ware of the Zen Buddhist Mas-ters. Tea bowls were made of earthenware and decorated with low-fire lead bearing glazes. The tea bowls were fired in small kilns fueled by charcoal, removed from the kiln with tongs when the glaze has melted, then allowed to cool naturally. The Western raku process shares the rapid firing and removal of pieces from the kiln when the glaze is melted, but that’s where the processes take different paths. Western raku employs a post-firing reduction process. When the red hot pots are removed from the kiln, they are placed in a can of com-bustible material and a lid is placed over the can to seal it shut. By smothering the flames, a carbon filled smoky atmosphere within the can is created. This causes copper bearing glazes to turn from oxi-dized green to reduced red colors. Any areas of bare clay will turn black. Workshop participants should prepare 5–6 pots for the raku process. Use of Soldate 60 clay is highly recommended, or any clay labeled as raku clay with sand and/or grog in it. All pots MUST be bisque fired prior to the evening glazing session of the workshop.

Spring Quarter (2-day workshop)Fri May 20 (7pm-9pm) and Sat May 21 (11am-5pm)

Raku: Non-traditional Alternative ProcessesAll Skill LevelsInstructor: Bill Schran

Since the development of Western Raku in the 1960’s potters have been exploring a variety of techniques that employee the basic raku firing process but developing ways of creating a decorative surface without the use of glazes. During this workshop we will be firing the pots as one would for a raku firing. Since we will not be using glazes on the pots, it is suggested that terra sigillata be used for a more refined finished appearance, though this is not required. Participants will be introduced to the following techniques: Foil Saggar, Horse Hair, Feather decoration and Obvara Firing. Participants should pre-pare 6 – 8 pots. Pots based on the cylinder form are highly recom-mended with openings at the rim large enough in diameter to be grasped with tongs. All supplies will be provided.

Saggar Firing with Aluminum FoilBeginner to Advanced Students Instructor: Paul Lyon

During this workshop we will explore, discuss and try a variety of possibilities using aluminum foil as a saggar in this alternative firing method. Discussion will cover the types of clay used as well as throw-ing, trimming and burnishing. We will prepare the pieces using a variety of materials (salt, sugar, copper wire, horsehair, miracle grow, toilet paper and other strange things) and discuss different firing temps. Clean up and finishing of work is a vital part of this process. Participants should bring small to medium size work which has been burnished and bisque fired. (Low temp bisque will retain the smooth burnished surface better. I suggest cone 015.) All necessary materials will be supplied, except pots to be fired. Participants should come prepared with closed toed shoes, respirator, natural cotton clothing, a bag lunch, and a sketchbook. Pieces will be ready to take home.

GLASS CLASSES

The Workhouse Glass Program is a collective and highly interactive envi-ronment with the goal of promoting the Glass Arts through research, ed-ucation and outreach. The Glass Program, housed in Building W-7 at the Workhouse, has a fully equipped facility with a kiln room, cold-working room, flameworking classroom and a multi-purpose flat working class-room used for instructional purposes in fusing, mosaics, stained glass and glass casting. We also have two sand-blasting units, nine table-top surface mix bench burners, a fully stocked store, and extensive shelving and workspace(s) in each classroom. Our studio facility is also comprised of nine private or shared studio spaces, home for our glass resident art-ists, whose works range from the functional to the sculptural. The facility also houses our retail glass gallery for the exhibition and sale of resident artists’ artworks.

The Workhouse is proud to offer a variety of classes for ages 13 and old-er in kiln casting and forming, glass jewelry, fusing, stained glass, flame-working and mosaics. Our instructors are emerging, pre-professional or professional glass artists and/or glass art educators. As is our goal with all of our visual arts classes, each student is given individual attention and provided a wide array of philosophies and techniques for accom-plishing their individual goals and complementing their work in glass.

Independent FlameThis class is perfect for the advanced student or glass artist who pre-fers to work independently or alongside other advanced and experi-enced flame workers. Each participant is requested to share a short presentation on any flameworking topic to their fellow classmates (e.g., a specific forming, shaping or color application technique). Par-ticipants are given a 27-hour pass which they can use during any time that Open Studio or another Independent Flame slot is available. (Meets in W-7, 711)

ART OF MOVEMENT

The Workhouse Arts Center Art of Movement program features innovative approaches to health and wellness including a variety of traditional mind-body offerings. Mind-body medicine uses the power of thoughts and emotions to influence physical health. As the great philosopher Plato put it, “Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and me-thodical physical exercise save it and preserve it.”

Our facilities include seven beautiful studios for both private and group classes. The Pilates studios feature state of the art equip-ment with full repertoire apparatus. Our unique program also features classes in Australian Calisthenics, Rowing, Cycling, and Surfset.

Classes in this program follow continuous 8-week sessions and most classes can be joined at any time. Our program is suitable for all ages and abilities, since most classes are self-paced.

For the latest schedule of Art of Movement classes, please visit WorkhouseArts.org or contact Lesley Spalding at 703-584-2900.

YogaHatha yoga focuses on asanas or poses. A person who practices yoga goes through a series of specific poses while controlling his or her breathing and incorporates meditation and relaxation. Yoga im-proves exibility, strength, balance, stamina and mental clarity, while reducing anxiety and stress. Yoga is about creating balance in the body through developing strength, exibility and the mind-body con-nection.

PilatesPilates is a unique workout that focuses on core stability while using controlled movements to condition the body. Emphasis is placed on breathing and quality of form. While abdominal and postural muscles are strengthened, the body also im- proves in exibility. Regular prac-tice of Pilates exercises dramatically improves strength, exibility, co-ordination, balance, posture and the mind-body connection.

Heart Cardio CircuitCardio and core training in the same class! This total-body workout incorporates aerobic conditioning with balance training, core condi-tioning, and upper and lower body strengthening. The multi-station circuit incorporates some studio equipment and a person’s own body for effective balance and resistance training; group aerobics are in-terspersed to break up the circuit progression and provide more in-tensive cardio. This lively format is both challenging and fun as part of a supportive, non-intimidating atmosphere. All moves are adapt-able to an individual’s fitness level.

No experience is required to participate in any of our classes!

Australian CalisthenicsCalisthenics is an artistic sport unique to Australia. It combines dance, gymnastics, singing, apparatus manipulation and ballet, and is performed in theatres. It involves a team of pupils learning rou-tines choreographed to music—each of about three to four minutes in duration—and presenting those routines at concerts. Pupils learn approximately six routines concurrently throughout a year and this is where the diversity of the sport is seen. Calisthenics can be catego-rised as both a sport and an art. As a sport, it encourages physical development, coordination, self-discipline and team spirit. As an art, it develops an appreciation of music and rhythm, the beauty of line and the excitement of presenting on stage.

This studio class is designed to provide an opportunity for master teachers, researchers, and movement artists to get together and share in the wealth and depth of knowledge that is found in the historical traditions and fight-ing techniques from around the world. Our hope is to create a forum in which we can develop our skills in the Art of the Swordand learn from one another. “Bumpers” is a physical journey that will create an opportunity to explore historical material on the highest possible level with the most experienced scholars and professionals of our craft. Develop in each other a comprehensive under- standing of our research, tech-niques and process. The idea is to create a kind of “collective educational format” that will allow the studio to serve the project participants through the entire year, in a journey of personal growth in scholarship, technique and process.

Essential Oils Workshops & Aromat Yoga SeriesInstructor: Marilyn Peppers

Aromatherapy is derived from the ancient prac- tice of using natural plant essences to promote health and well-being. It consists of the use of pure essential oils obtained from a wide assort-ment of plants, which have been steam dis-tilled or cold-pressed from flowers, fruit, bark and roots. Aromatherapy can help ease a wide assortment of ailments; easing aches, pains, and injuries, while relieving the discomforts of many health problems. Aromatherapy also acts on the central nervous system, relieving depression and anxiety, reducing stress, relax-ing, uplifting, sedating or stimulating, restoring both physical and emotional well-being.

Healthy & Fit Workshop SeriesInstructor: Marilyn Peppers
