What’s Hot?

Yachts have never been bigger. Shipyard order books have never beenfuller. The yachting industry has come of age and companies in all sectors– whether shipyards, designers, brokers or suppliers – have created stableand established businesses for the future.

Jonathan BeckettChief Executive

The current instability in the world financial markets iscreating uncertainty in the lower and middle brokeragemarkets (€1,000,000 to €10,000,000), especially in theUnited States where many yachts of this value are quiteheavily financed. Conversely, the same economic climate isalready demonstrating a positive knock-on effect in the over40 metre category, which has been starved of good qualityinventory for a number of years. Sellers have been askingpremium prices and have actually been achieving theseprices. Less impatient buyers who have held off making anacquisition could now be rewarded with a greater choice ofinventory at more realistic price levels.

The tough area of the brokerage market is the 70 to 90metre bracket. Between 10 and 20 buyers exist in thiscategory at the moment and there are virtually no vesselsof this size available for sale. In today's market it is easierto sell an 80 metre yacht than a 50 metre yacht. Crazybut true!

The last few years have been especially exciting for largecustom new builds. Should we expect a downturn in newconstruction? There’s certainly no sign of it as yet. Burgess

have signed 3 new construction contracts and have 4 lettersof intent for some amazing megayacht new build projects - allin the first few months of 2008. The value of these 7 projectsis more than an astonishing one billion euros!

As one would expect in this landscape, superyachtcharters go from strength, but with the enduring problemof not enough yachts to meet the concentrated demand inhigh season periods and not enough charterers during thebalance of the year. The charter market will be difficult togrow further unless the volume of off peak season chartersincreases.

However the large yacht market behaves, Burgess leadsfrom the front and is fortunate to have built a business onthe very strongest foundations. The company is privatelyowned, most of our staff have been with us for years and ourdedication to offering a first-class service never falters.

Wishing you an enjoyable summer of cruising and welook forward to offering you a warm welcome at the Burgessstand during the Monaco Yacht Show from 24to 27 September.

28 NEW CONSTRUCT I ON – F EADSH I P

The First Export Association of Dutch Shipbuilders is not the most imaginative of titles. Yet today, the Feadshipname catches the imagination and evokes the magic of yachting like few others. In this, the first in our series ofshipyard close-ups, Burgess charts the phenomenal success of this grand dame of superyacht construction.

250 yachts, 60 years,

Feadship rose like a phoenix from the ashes ofpost-war Europe in 1949, when the principalplayers in the Dutch shipbuilding industry formeda joint venture. Their common goal: to take thefinest traditions of yacht design and constructionto a booming American market. And the rest, asthey say, is history.

Feadship is a very European collaboration, forgedby the three leading names in Dutch shipbuilding:De Vries, Van Lent and De Voogt. Each of thesefamily firms has an impressive pedigree inshipbuilding, design and naval architecture.Together, they have proved unstoppable.

What began as a marketing association hasbecome a powerful brand in its own right.Feadship today is recognised as a world leader inthe field of custom-built luxury motor yachts, with

a reputation for magnificent design, the higheststandards of craftsmanship and the flexibility tomeet each individual client’s requirements. An added strength lies in their ability to adapt tothe market: they expanded capacity at the righttime and reacted proactively to the rapid rise indemand for very big yachts.

These are the reasons why Feadships are sosought after, command such high resale prices, and why there is such keen competition for newbuild slots at their Dutch yards.

The status enjoyed by Feadships isbased on the well-balanced, classic linesof their designs, their comfortable sea-keeping qualities and the reliability oftheir engineering.

29www.burgessyachts.comwww.burgessyachts.com

Yet it would be a mistake to equate theFeadship brand only with tradition andclassicism. The yard has always had a strongstreak of innovative flair and futuristic vision. Many Feadships have pushed the envelope ofdesign and marine engineering capability, exploiting the very latest materials andtechnologies to give entrepreneurial andambitious owners what they want.

The extensive Feadship fleet includes ice-class expedition yachtsand sumptuous floating palaces. From unique solutions forhelicopter stowage, to cutting-edge systems for environmentalprotection, the engineers and designers at Feadship continue tomeet the demands of the most discerning yacht owners.

As you might expect of two market leaders, Burgess andFeadship have worked together on numerous projects over theyears. Burgess brokers know that a Feadship pedigree is aguarantee of interest; for the Burgess new construction team,Feadship deliverability and build quality are key.

One pedigree.

In the true Feadship spirit, the company has developed a fast tracknew build concept that combines innovation with an understanding ofwhat the next generation of yacht owners are looking for. That is, allthe lifestyle advantages and reliability of a custom-built Feadship, with an accelerated delivery time and defined cost parameters. Thesolution is a choice of two custom-series yachts.

For both the SL39 and the F45 Vantage, the constructioninfrastructure, yacht systems and engineering package are all pre-developed and tested. This leaves clear, well-defined accommodationand deck spaces, which can be customised to suit each individualowner. To most owners, this is the aspect of the project that mattersmost, and Feadship has left plenty of scope for personalisation.

Custom series: The best of both worlds
