It looks like Spring is in the air! The flowers are blooming, the windsare getting warmer, and as we just finished up our annual SpringSpruce-Up, the club is looking in tip-top shape. Wehad a good crowd of members who came out and got their

hands dirty for this year’s spruce-up. One of the major projects thatwas tackled this year involved the planting of two new palm treesalong either side of the club entrance gate. Be sure to take a ganderat them the next time you’re here. You’ll see that our club is startingto look more and more like the slice of paradise that it is! A big thank

you to all the volunteers who came out and helped. Your hard work is much appreciated! On a different note, I’d like to take a little moment here to talk

about safety. Members’ safety is always a top priority at our club, which is why we have threFirstAid stations, and two easy-access AED Defibrillator stations here. The First Aid cabinets can befound in the following locations: the Manager’s office, the Junior Director’s office, and inside theQuarterdeck women’s restroom. The AED stations are located in the lobby next to the mainoffice, and in the Quarterdeck near the sink, and both are clearly marked by signs (please seephotos).

For those of you who are not familiar with them, AED’s can be used in cardiac-arrestemergencies. They have been designed so that any person, with no previous experience, caneasily use them. They have easy-to-follow verbal instructions that are activated when the unit isturned on. I’d recommend that everyone gets familiarized with the locations of these First Aidand AED stations, so you will be prepared in the event of an emergency. As we all know, whendisaster strikes, every second is crucial, so please be sure to take note, and stay safe!

It just rolls on and on!April was a slow month at the club. We started out with the month by hosting CaliforniaInternational Sailing Association’s (CISA) 36th annual spring seminar! Once again 80 plus

of the nation’s top youth sailors descended upon our club to be trained by the top coaches fromaround the world. They sailed in Lasers, Laser Radial, 420s and the 29er. As always the groupleft our club feeling welcomed and having learned a lot. I would like to thank CISA and its leadershipfor allowing us to continue this wonderful relationship as well as the care they show our club!Just as a side note, I sailed in the first CISA clinic in 1978- it was fantastic then and has maintainedthat same high level over the years!

Following that, we the members of ABYC hosted one of our incredible staff members wedding – Julissa Fernandez. It was a wonderful day and Julissa was a beautiful bride! Congratulations to Julissa and her family.

On the 16th and 17th we held our annual Spring Spruce Up! About 60 members showed up in their work clothes andpainted, dug, swept, pruned and polished. Steve Smith put together a great list of projects for the weekend but, the memberswere so efficient that we had to find a number of other projects to keep us all busy until lunch time! A big shout out to all ofthe members and guests that came down and helped get the club ready for opening day!

On the 30th we will be holding our 90th opening day! Not bad for a club which started on the beach, then moved a firehouse to become the first official ABYC club house – it is still there and known as Leeway! In 1964 the members built ourcurrent club house and facility. The great thing is that over those 90 years we have stayed focused the original goal of ourfounders – To have a family oriented club which supports the growth of armature sailing and racing.

To all those members past and present, thank you!May the winds be fair and the seas be calm,Latham Bell

A brief report from the Fleet Captain. We have now completed installing the two new 60 HP outboards on two of our 17 foot Whalers. I am excited to announce that we have begun the process of ordering a new 23 foot Carolina Skiff to replace Sidney T. Once we take delivery of

our newest addition to our fleet it will be outfitted with our new 90 HP outboard. I’d like to thank KevinBrown for spearheading this venture.

I have received feedback from some of you who have been participating in the monthly fleet races.By in large the feedback has been positive. It seems as those many fleets have taken advantage ofgetting out on the water with your fellow members for some fun racing. The idea behind the monthlyClub-wide fleet races is to get more people out on the water for a fun day of sailing. It was envisioned

that each fleet participating in the fleet races would each takeresponsibility for organizing and running the races on analternating basis. I will be organizing a meeting soon to helpwith setting some minimum expectations and to finalize aschedule for the balance of the year so we are all clear on whohas responsibility of for what month. It would be great to havea volunteer or two from the participating fleets to help out withrunning things.

We are gearing up for an action packed summer withmultiple regattas. If you are interested in helping out with racemanagement please let me know; it’s a great way to meet newpeople, get out on the water and give back to the Club.

The weekend of April 16th and 17th, I sailed my last high school regatta at theGold Pacific Coast Championships, or PCC’s, here in Long Beach. I sailed all fouryears for my school, Long Beach Polytechnic High school, and every other year

we had to trek up to San Francisco for the PCC’s, so it was amazing to be able to racemy last PCC’s in my hometown. We rotated off of the Belmont pier, so it was easy tocheer on teammates from the pier when we were off rotation. All weekend long, theweather was fantastic and the wind was good. I sailed with sophomore Cameron Feves, and we started the regatta with some solid races but we were able to finish off thesecond day with a couple of firsts in A rotation, which was a really great way to finish things off. I spent four years on thePoly sailing team, and my freshmen year we barely qualified as one, with on and off coaching and hardly enoughmembers to compete. During my high school experience, I’ve watched the team triple in size and be led by thewonderful Allie Blecher. That weekend marked the end of my sailing career, for the most part, since I’m not attending acollege with a sailing team next year. I am happy to have marked the end of four truly great sailing years with an equallyamazing regatta.

Summer is almost here! We are rapidly filling spots in the Jr. Sailing Summer Program. See the ABYC website andclick on the menu for Jr. Sailing and remember to tell a friend about it. You do not have to be a member of ABYC toparticipate. The Summer Sailing Program has something to offer at all ages and skill levels, so check it out.

The big effort last month was the discussion of forming a 501c.3 as it pertains to Youth Sailing in our club and area. Many organizations across the country, around Southern California, and even in our own Bay have these important accountingtools for getting kids on the water by generating the needed funding. If there was one thing that struck me once seriouslylooking into it, it would be the fact that we seem to be the only organization that DOES NOT offer a c3 program to incentivizecash donations. So far, with the amount of research that has been done following an outstanding Board of Director’spresentation from Brian Yacker of YH ADVISORS (invited by our own Joel Stone and the JAC). This has been an eyeopening project thus far and I am really excited about our upcoming JAC and Board of Director’s May meetings to explainour findings.

The JAC has also decided to increase the number of FJs that are offered in the High School program by usingmoney from the Jr. Program Fund. If you remember, there was a generous donation by Club Member Ed Feo earlier thisyear and has allowed us the opportunity to increase the size of our FJ fleet. Some really nice used boats are being sold byUCSB and we have been allowed to earmark the best ones. This will allow our High Schools to be more competitive andalso offer the older ones boats for the Sailing Program that will allow new sailors the benefit of using “seasoned” boats andnot wearing out our new ones!

Don’t forget to register for the Jr. Program and check the box on the bottom of your monthly Yacht Club bill to helpfund the program. We just bought some needed radios and there will certainly be more things to buy as we ramp up forsummer. Also, you can name a Club owned Opti! This honor comes at the low sum of $500 and the name of your choicewill remain on a charter boat for a minimum of 5 years. Contact Allie Blecher for more information.

I will see you on the water.Best, Bloemeke

recapapril meeting

Hopefully you are one of the lucky ones that attended the April general meetinghosted by the Junior Fleet. Dinner was a family-friendly Italian dinner preparedby the ABYC kitchen crew. Howard Hamlin gave an inspiring and

humorous presentation on his amazing international career in 505 and skiff sailing, along with bits of helicopter skiing, Australian ranching and surfing. Thanks to thesuccess of the juniors’ sailing recycling program, we had a huge new batch of totesand other items from Sea Bags of Maine. Thank you to all who purchased bags andtickets for the 50/50 drawing. We raised over $1,400 for the Junior Fund from thetote sales and $177 from the drawing. Congratulations to Cindy Heavrin for winningthe drawing and then promptly spending much of it on tote bags.

The Long Beach Grand Prix wasn’t the only racegoing on last weekend here in Long Beach. TheUS Sailing Center and the Pacific Coast

Interscholastic Sailing Association (PCISA) hosted thePacific Coast Championships (PCCs) for high schoolsailing in the waters off of the Belmont Pier. PCISA isone of seven districts in the United States and includesall high schools in California, Hawaii and Arizona. Afterfive 2-day regattas earlier in the school year, the topranked 22 high schools competed. This regatta is thecream of crop of high school sailing for California. Thisregatta is sailed in the 2-person Club Flying Juniors. AnA division skipper and crew sail a rotation of two racesand then switch with their B division skipper and crew. Here in Long Beach, sailing doesn’t count for PE creditat school, so the teams are smaller and the sailors have commitments to other sports teams. In other school districts, sailing does count for PE, so the teams can be over 50 sailors, enabling them to switch around skippers and crewsdepending upon wind conditions.

Long Beach currently has two high school sailing teams at Wilson and Poly High Schools that train together atAlamitos Bay Yacht Club with their fantastic coach Allie Blecher, a collegiate All-American from College of Charleston and

College Sailor of the Year. The PCCs last weekend wasthe culminating regatta of the school year, with the topfour finishers moving on to the Nationals next month inCharleston. 11 of the 44 skippers were not seniors, including all of the Poly and Wilson skippers. Wilson’steam for this regatta included skippers Alan Peoples, JackBerg and Trent Turgliatto, with crews Kyle Cater, ChristinaVan Dyke, Keltin Hill, Roxanne Snyder and HaileyThompson. Poly’s team included skippers CameronFeves, Jake Zieba and crews Beth Golison, Julia Golisonand Taylor Milefchik.

Saturday’s racing saw about 15-17 knots off theBelmont Pier venue, while Sunday was a bit lighter. Therace committee of US Sailing Center ’s amazingvolunteers managed to get in 24 races, 12 for eachdivision. Both local teams battled the powerhouse teamsfrom Point Loma, Newport Harbor, and Corona del Mar,as well as others. Both Poly and Wilson had some greatfinishes, with Poly’s Feves winning two races, andWilson’s Peoples winning one. Poly finished 11th in the

regatta, with Wilson only two points behind in 12th. Another local sailor from ABYC Jacob Rosenbergskippered for Sage Hill High School who finished in 10th. The top four teams that will move on to Nationals areCorona del Mar, Point Loma, Newport Harbor and SantaBarbara. Both Wilson and Poly sailing teams have brightfutures since only one sailor graduates this year. In honorof her final regatta, Beth Golison was tossed into thebay after the day’s racing. Any Long Beach highschoolers interested in participating in high school sailingcan contact Coach Allie at abyc.jrprogram.com.

Congratulations to both teams for a job welldone!

Two CFJs are on a leg to windward leg. Blue is on starboard tack outside the zone and below the lay line. Yellow ison port tack approaching the starboard lay line. Blue after crossing ahead of Yellow, tacks to port to put in a short hitch to thestarboard lay line. Yellow crosses close astern of Blue and tacks when she reaches the lay line. Both boats hail, but nocollision occurs. How should the protest committee decide?

I had the pleasure to greet Francis Fanelli from the SunriseYacht Club in Merrick, New York at happy hour on Friday,April 21st. Sunrise YC is on Long Island, coincidentally near

Long Beach, NY. Fran said the sailing is not very good due toshallow waters but many members are active anglers. Hewas a pleasure to talk with and we discussed how SandyHook affected his club and others in the area – still recovering.

As a freshman board member, not sure I used properprotocol for the ceremonious exchange of burgees, but wehad cocktails, swapped stories (his about shark fishing, mineabout sailing), and took a picture.

Membership is growing! The ABYC family is getting stronger with great new members. This month, we added thefollowing to membership:George and Jennifer Hersham sponsored by Chuck ClayJack Hastings sponsored by Tim CarterRick and Kathleen Kaplan sponsored by Jon RobinsonMark and Tiffany Williams sponsored by Steve Mueller

The board of directors approved the following candidates for membership at the April board meeting;Brian and Sammy Rogers sponsored by Jon RobinsonRupert and Alexandra Nuttal-Smith sponsored by Tim CarterJames and Carla Higbee sponsored by Rob Stropky

The following candidates are posted, and will be up for approval at the next board meeting:Michael Debricant sponsored by Chuck ClayMark McGlashan sponsored by Jim SamualThis group comes to ABYC for various reasons – the junior program and Optis, High School sailing, the Cal 20

fleet, the Viper fleet, and as friends of current members who want to join in on the fun! A great sign of the strength of thedifferent groups and activities at the club.

The April membership meeting burgee presentations went to the following: New junior member Summer Drakewho sails Optis and is a great addition, looking to the future of our club. Also, the Williams family, Mark and Tiffany with Optisailor Elle and soon-to-be junior sailor Lars – very excited to welcome this family onboard. And we had two returningsailors receive burgees – Jack Hastings who fell out of sailing for several years but is now anxious to get back into thegame, and Carl and Jan Boller. Carl grew up sailing at ABYC but spent his adult life and career in Syracuse, New York. He’s working his way back here so it was great to welcome Carl and Jan back to the club. They jumped right in and wereat Spring Spruce up the next day as was Jack Hastings!

Keep your eyes open for potential new members! Our family is strong but we have room for more. If you knowsomebody that is interested in becoming a member please drop a note to Membership Chairman Rob Stropky [email protected], or Dan Milefchik at [email protected].

Lido sailors traveled to Marina Del Reyto compete against our friends from Fleet2. Mark Ryan arrived with the first startsequence already counting. The latearrival did not bother Team Orin B as they

still managed to dominate and finish on top of A fleet. Dan Gilboa. Derek Buczinski, Bill Moore, Holly Davisended up in a tie for 5th place of the 8 boats. Kathy Reedand Cindy Heavrin, a bit over powered by wind, finished7th.

Tight racing in the B fleet with only 4 pointsseparating 1st through 4th yielded Bruce Wasson and NazSolanki on top of B fleet. Way to go team Fudd!

After the trophy presentation Fleet Two fed theentire fleet a fabulous dinner. Our hosts and ABYC friendsJoanna and Charles Smith of Lido Mosquito finished 2nd

quiz #19rules answer

Rules that ApplyRule 13 (While Tacking)Rule 15 (Aquiring Right of Way)Rule 61.1 (Informing the Protestee)Neither boat appears to have filed a valid protest. “Hey” and “You can’t do that”, although expressing their feelings

does not meet the requirements of rule 61.1. If the other boat is within hailing distance you must hail “Protest”. As CFJ’s areless than 6 meters a red flag is not required.

However, had they correctly hailed “protest”, the following might have been the decision. Both boats are outside ofthe zone so the right-of way rules of part 2 apply. As both boats are tacking the last sentence of rule 13 applies. “If two boatsare subject to this rule at the same time, the one on the other’s port side or the one astern shall keep clear.”

If blue was to have got down to close hauled, she would have become the right- of-way boat, but would still berequired to initially give yellow time to keep clear. Blue has some risk in the room.

If you have an interesting rules situation please let me know.Mark Townsend

There will also be aMother’s Day remembrance for you from the club. You’ll be doing your family a great kindness alsobecause while Mother’s Day brunches at otherestablishments can run between $40.00 and$60.00, the early bird charge (with reservationsbefore April 27th) for the ABYC brunch is a mere $20.00! Calling all ABYC Members!!

We need to raise money for our Junior Fund.

The Junior Advisory Committee has decided to name our fleet of charter boats.

We are seeking a $500 donation to put an appropriate name of your choice on the

back of one of our 16 charter boats in our fleet of Sabots and Optimists.

Email [email protected] if you would like to donate.

Due to the rotation of boats the JAC is guaranteeing the name will remain on a boat for a minimum of 5 years. Please make checks out to ABYC and on the memo line add Jr.

Fund Boat naming.
