t this time of year it’s

buzzing at the Select

Harvest almond

orchard just outside

of Robinvale, Victoria

– nearly all the bees

in Australia have congregated here for

the annual pollination.

“For 2.5 weeks every August the

almond trees all go into blossom so

we need to bring in 3 billion bees to

pollinate the trees so that they produce

nuts,” says Matthew Graham, Group

Manager, Sales & Marketing.

It’s a stunning sight to behold – over

38,000 acres of almond trees are in

full bloom and the constant hum of

billions of busy bees at work is an

awe-inspiring display of Mother Nature.

“It’s an exercise that needs to be

carried out with military precision,”

says Matthew. “You can only shift

bees in their hives at night otherwise

they become disoriented and they’ll

head back to where they came from.”

It’s a crucial few weeks as pollination

has a direct impact on crop size in

the upcoming harvest. “Bees are

vital as they carry pollen between

different varieties of almond blossom,”

says Matthew.

Matthew

With its base on the Murray River, Select

Harvest is the largest grower of almonds

in the Southern Hemisphere. Between

February and April, the team are busy

shaking the trees to encourage the

almonds still in their husks to fall to the

orchard floor. From there the almonds are

sent to the harvesting facility where the

husk and shell is removed.

Growing almonds requires patience – it

takes three years for an almond tree to

produce its first crop and around seven

years until it reaches maturity. But they do

live to a ripe old age – almond trees can

bear nuts for between 25-30 years.

Consuming almonds is also good for

our own longevity. “They help manage

cholesterol and are incredibly good for

your heart,” says Matthew. You could say,

a handful of almonds a day helps keep

the doctor away…

lamb mid loin chopsare an extremely versatile cut of meat. This cut comes

from the rib area of the lamb and has a small T-shaped

bone creating a large piece of meat and a smaller fillet

on the chop. Look for chops cut to an even thickness

and a small covering of fat on the back of the chop.

lamb eye of loin (back straps)is available in the Heart Smart range of meat cuts and has been

trimmed of excess fat. Heart Smart lamb typically contains less

than 7g fat per 100g, making it the smart choice for your family.

When buying lamb eye of loin, look for meat that is light red in

colour with an even thickness all around. This cut of lamb is from

the back bone of the lamb. To store, refrigerate in an airtight

container for up to 2-3 days after purchase. For a fresh sauce to

serve with cooked lamb eye of loin, blend together mint, parsley,

lemon rind and juice, olive oil and pepper.

are a quick, easy and versatile cut that can either be roasted in the

oven or on the barbecue. It cooks fairly quickly and is easy to

carve as it is boneless, perfect for an easy dinner! Also available

are the Marinated Lamb Butterfly Legs and Shoulders for your

convenience. Perfect for the barbecue, simply pick up from the

meat fridge at your local Woolworths supermarket and serve with

a Fresh Cut Salad drizzled with balsamic vinegar and some

chargrilled vegetables. When purchasing packaged fresh lamb,

look for firm meat and ensure that packaging is in good condition

with no tears or holes.

lamb cutletsLook for cutlets that are light red in colour and have a rounded

eye muscle that is equal in thickness. Great flavour matches are

lemon, rosemary, oregano, thyme, mint, cumin, lime and parsley.

They only need a few minutes to cook so they are great for a

quick and easy meal. Kids love them because they come with

built-in handles which makes them easy to eat. ‘Frenched Cutlets’

are cutlets that have been trimmed with the fat cleaned away

from the bone. It is done for presentation and of course reduces

the fat. To french cutlets, use a small, sharp knife to trim the fat

that lays around the outside of the meat then scrape and clean

along the bone.

fresh families

“I love to cook this dishwith my kids because it’seasy, only uses one pan,is tasty and versatile. Itcontains vegies and leftoverscan be easily reheated.”Brett Griffiths, Fresh Food Dadpictured with daughter, Lara.

B rett Griffiths loves

celebrating Father’s Day.

Not for the presents or

the special treatment,

but because it’s the one time of the year

where he gets a chance to stop and reflect

on his role as dad to Shae, 7 years and

Lara, 5 years.

According to the Bureau of Statistics

(ABS), almost 30 per cent of the 1.7 million

Aussie dads work 50 or more hours

each week in their employed jobs,

so juggling fatherhood and work

responsibilities is a big task.

“A lot of times it’s hard, generally

fathers work and provide for their families,”

says Paul Roos, Swans AFL Coach and

winner of the The Shepherd Centre

Australian Father of the Year in 2008.

His advice for being a top dad?

“At every opportunity try and spend as

much time as you can with your family

and kids,” says Paul.

While mums are more commonly the

parent to stay at home and look after

the kids full-time, statistics show that

dads are doing their bit to help around the

house, too. According to ABS, men are

spending more time on traditionally

‘female’ domestic activities such as

cooking and laundry.

According to our Fresh Food Dad Brett,

“These ordinary ‘chores’ can be a great

way to spend time with your kids – whip

up a hearty Bolognese for dinner, make a

yummy pie and head out on a picnic or

bake a batch of cookies as a special

after-school snack. Who knows, you

might very well find you’ve got a mini

chef in the house… and hopefully one

that will make you brekkie in bed on

Father’s Day.” To all dads this Father’s Day,

sit back and enjoy the hugs and pressies!

The originalsuperfood. It turns out, the mild mannered apple is in fact a superfood.Of course, that would come as no surprise to Hippocrates whorecommended an apple a day all the way back in 400BC.Today we know that apples offer a range of health benefits. They have twice the antioxidants of green tea and in factprovide the highest antioxidant content of Australia’s mostpopular fruits. These antioxidants help to prevent the damage caused byfree radicals which damage your cells and age you beforeyour time. They’ve alsobeen linked to cardiovascular health aswell as helpingmaintain weight loss and general wellbeing. No wonder they’re called a superfood. All these benefits come wrapped up in an affordable littlepackage that’s completely biodegradable and so tasty, it’sreportedly responsible for original sin. ❀ Spring is lawn renovation season. Fill hollows with

good quality top dressing. Use a rake to scratch

dead grass material out of the lawn. If left, this

debris (called thatch) can build up and increase

the risk of disease.

THE SPRING FLOWER GARDEN

❀ Plant out summer seedlings such as petunias and

phlox. Sow seeds of marigolds, zinnias, cosmos

and sunflowers.

❀ Feed roses and hibiscus with Yates Dynamic

Lifter Advanced for Roses. Put a layer of organic

mulch over their root systems.

❀ Spread Yates Dynamic Lifter Pellets around

most of the shrubs in the garden. Because it

breaks down gradually, it’s ideal for our soils.

SPRING PRUNING

❀ Cut back cold-damaged sections in vulnerable

plants.

❀ After they’ve finished flowering, prune those roses

that only bloom in spring. This group includes

many old-fashioned and weeping roses such as

Banksia roses.

❀ After blooming is also the best time to cut back

spring-flowering shrubs and trees.

❀ Give hedges the first trim of the season.

FRUIT ANDVEGIE GARDEN

❀ Feed lettuce with a liquid plant food every two

weeks to promote rapid growth, which stops the

plants from rushing to seed.

❀ In the herb patch, sow basil seeds and plant

dill. Fertilise existing herbs lightly to encourage

new growth.

❀ Feed citrus trees and check for pest problems.

❀ Sow beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, melons,

sweet corn and many more.

❀ Your garden will now be well prepared for the

coming summer!

Blemish-free rosesIt’s easy to keep your roses looking their

best with the help of Yates Rose Gun

Advanced. This product takes care of

all the common rose problems – black

spot, mildew, insect pests like aphids

and mites – all-in-one combined,

ready-to-use spray. It’s perfect for

the busy homeowner who

doesn’t have time to

mix garden sprays, and

the fungus and insect

controls get right inside the

plant’s system so they work

from within.

Healthy dietThe garden’s really taking off at this time of year, which is why this is the perfect

time to feed all your garden plants. Don’t forget your pot plants, because they

can be particularly hungry in the spring growing season. InstantGro All Purpose

Compound Fertiliser will feed most plants in the garden

and pots with first a quick boost, followed by a slow

trickle of nutrients over the next few weeks. It’s a bit like

putting you garden on a health-promoting diet!

TIP: Water well after spreading fertiliser - this

gets the goodness heading down to the roots!

Natural goodnessYates Dynamic Lifter Pellets not only feed your plants, they

also improve the soil. It’s made from composted manure with

added seaweed, fishmeal and blood and bone, a rich blend that

excites all the natural micro-organisms in the soil. This helps the

soil work better so your plants aren’t just well fed, they have

happier roots so they end up stronger and healthier.

TIP: Fill the toe of an old stocking with Yates

Dynamic Lifter Pellets, soak in a bucket of water and

dilute the resulting rich liquid to make a liquid plant food.

TIP: Pick roses in

the morning while

flowers are at

their freshest.

Spray weeds awayJust like the rest of the garden,

weeds grow madly in spring.

Yates Zero Rapid, in a quick-spray

trigger pack, is ready for instant

action as soon as weeds appear.

Zero Rapid works so fast, before

you know it the weeds will be

dead, right down to

the roots! In fact, the

advanced formula

works twice as fast as

standard Zero. You can

twist the trigger to select

a far-reaching direct

jet or a broader spray

– both with deadly

results for weeds!

Want to avoid nasty nicks? Peskybumps? Baby soft skin has neverbeen easier for men to achieve –all you need is a little know-howand the right products at hand.

1Ever tried shaving in the shower? The idea is to lift thestubble without excess force and, because the steam

from the shower helps open the pores and softens the hair, you’ll get a closer, smoother shave in the shower. Use long, even strokes. Remember, you’re shaving, not chopping atthe skin.

2Showing Five O’clock Shadow before you’ve had achance to finish your morning latte? You might need

to rethink the way you razor: go with the grain and shavedownward first to remove the bulk of the regrowth, then workupwards against any remaining stubble – it’s the best way toget a super close shave, but be aware that if you have razorbump problems it can further irritate the follicle.

3Think about the skin above your whiskers, too –you might notice the pores around your nose sporting

a black spot? That’s a build-up of oxidised oil and dirt, something that can be easily removed with a quick latherof Primal Earth Mens Face Wash 125ml.

4If you’ve got more than a few days’ growth, a pre-shaveoil is essential. King of Shave Kinexium ST Shave

Oil 20ml uses advanced silicon technology to help the razorglide easily. The clear formula means you can see whereyou’re shaving and it can be used either on its own or incombination with a gel or foam. Great for sensitive skin.

5Don’t feel like shaving every day? Veet For Men HairRemoval Cream dissolves the protein structure of

the hair, leaving the hair shaft with a rounded tip at the skinsurface. The benefits? Regrowth feels softer when comparedto shaving and the results last twice as long.

Azaleas

zaleas are one of themost popular floweringshrubs in the world, and can thrive in allbut the tropical parts

of Australia. Azalea flowers areclassified as singles with a singlerow of petals or doubles withmultiple rows of petals giving aruffled appearance. They comein colours of pure white throughto soft blush pink tones, vividcerise to deep reds and purples. There are even some bi-colouredvarieties available. Most azaleas will grow in a

sunny or semi-shaded positionbut try to avoid exposure to hotafternoon sun. The more vigorousgrowing single types perform wellin the garden and can be trainedinto beautiful flowering hedges. The pretty double flowering

types can be slower growingand are also well suited to potsor patio tubs.Azaleas are shallow rooted

plants and benefit from a soilrich in organic matter such ashomemade compost or agedcow manure. Ensure the drainageis good because they dislike wetfeet. Feeding after flowering withan azalea fertilizer ensures a goodsurge of healthy growth. Azaleasonly require a light pruning aroundDecember to shape the plant andencourage more flowers.Whilst garden azaleas can

be quite drought hardy onceestablished they will alwaysperform better with regularwatering especially during thewarmer months. Azaleas grownin planter pots will always needregular watering.

Spring has finally sprung. Now is the perfect timeof year to inject a vibrantsplash of colour into yourgarden beds, window boxesor patio with spring’s earlyflowering shrub, the azalea.

It’s a moment Lilliana Taleski will neverforget – watching her four-year oldson, Stefan (pictured above withsister Isabella), being dragged from afamily friend’s pool and placed in the

recovery position by his 12-year old sister,Isabella. It was a heart-wrenching moment.

“It all happened in a split second. I justcouldn’t believe it,” says Liliana. “If Isabellahadn’t seen him bobbing in the water, itmight have been too late. She saved his life.”

Rushed to The Children’s Hospital atWestmead by CareFlight, Stefan wasadmitted to the Trauma Unit to monitor hisbreathing and oxygen intake. “The medicalteam was just fantastic, they went over andabove what was required of them, helpingStefan but also supporting us and providingguidance on how to help him recover fromthe mental trauma,” says Lilliana.

“The ordeal has had a good outcome –Stefan is still with us and is well and it’s reallymade me so aware of just how importantfunding for The Children’s Hospital is.”

A Woolworths employee at Bonnyrigg,Lilliana experienced first-hand the results ofher store’s fundraising efforts — much of theequipment used in the hospital is purchasedwith funds raised through the annualWoolworths Fresh Food Kids HospitalAppeal. “The doctors and nurses do suchan amazing job but they need extra fundsto help save children’s lives,” says Lilliana.“Every cent counts. If you can afford todonate just $2, that’s something. That’sless than the cost of a cup of coffee.”

“It doesn’t take much to make a difference.Even a little goes a long way because it alladds up in the end,” says Lilliana. “I neverimagined that the fundraising events I had

participated in through work would have apersonal impact on my life. It really is a greatcause that needs the support.”

Supporting this worthwhile causeis simple:• Make a donation of any amount and it willbe added to your grocery bill. All donationsover $2 are tax deductible and a tax receiptwill be issued.• Enjoy a treat from a Woolworths fundraisingsausage sizzle or cake stall.• Purchase Hospital Appeal merchandise atregisters.• Buy a stunning $16 floral bouquet.$2 from every bunch sold will go to theAppeal.
