We really began to play team defense. I hope that there is a lot of carry over from last year and we can pick up were we left off.working on We are young in the outfield so we are going to need to spend extra time getting them ready for this season. Our hitting needs to be more consistent this season. We have

put in a lot of extra work on technique this spring and I hope it pays off as the season progresses.conference The conference has been led by the same two teams Beal City and Pine River for as long as I can remember. There is no reason to expect anything different. I think the true race is for third and that is anyones spot to earn at this point.goals We would really like to finish in the top third of the conference again this year. record 5-3 in dual meetsaccomplishments Champions of the Mesick Invitational, runner-up at the Brethren Invitational, 3rd at the regional meet, 7th at the MITCA team state championships.returnees We have a strong, returning group of athletes. Seniors: Tom Brettschneider (distance); Steve Helsel (mid-dis-tance); Noah Thompson (throws); Kaleb Locktosh (throws and sprints); Paul Potter (hurdles); Jordan Johnigan (dis-tance). Juniors: Andrew Everett (HJ, LJ, sprints, distance); Tyler Swing (throws); Nick Renfer (400, 200); Jonah Nelson (LJ and sprints); Ryan Groendyke (distance); Austin Leja (distance). Sophomores: Josh Cergnul (800, 400); Joey Beehler (hurdles, sprints, LJ); Brock Wright (distance); Zach Vredenburg (throws).

newcomers Sophomore Avery Hill and freshman Jacob Cergnul will help in the sprints. Freshmen Zach Flint and Seth Sparks will be vaulters and contribute in the distance events. Freshman Darren Kozlowski will be scoring in the 400 and 200. Freshmen Ryan Bredahl, Josh Farrell, Rene LaFreniere, Spencer Park, and Gary Vinson will help in the throws and various other events. Freshman Noah Saylor has been working in the dis-tance area.strengths So far the work ethic has been great. We have a number of team members who are driven to do well and will work hard to achieve. Distance and mid-distance events will do well, as will our throwing contingent.working on A major factor is to continue working on our overall conditioning, both mental and physical. The progression will hopefully have us hitting our stride in mid-May. Finding the

best spots for all our athletes is always an interesting challenge.conference Evart is the conference champion until beaten. However, the Highland Conference is an exceptionally strong track conference, and each team has strong events and ath-letes. All schools demand your best every time out.goals 1) To give the best we can at all times on and off the track, 2) For each team member to have a positive experi-ence, and 3) To be competitive in every one of our meets.big meets Each meet offers its own challenges and obsta-cles, whether conference, non-conference, invitationals, or state meets. record Our only dual meet loss came vs. Beal City.accomplishments 4th place at MITCA Division 4 Team State Finals.returnees We have a large group of seniors leading us this year. Zoe Wahr in the hurdles, Karrah Baker in the throws, Kaitlyn Mitchell in the jumps, Maria Barnes in pole vault, Ashley Baron in the sprints, Destiny Vredenburg and Kirsten Federowicz in distance and Julia Helsel in middle distance. Without these ath-letes, our team wouldnt be possible. With our numbers on the team they are coaches as much as they are athletes. It should be a great season!newcomers We have a good size group of hard-working

freshman athletes. Sara Bartmass, Madison Bigelow, Sydnie Blackledge, Ysabel McBride, Paige Phillips, Rayna Skiver, and Shyan Sparks. With their work ethic and a little coaching, these girls are going to be a force to be reckoned with. First-year seniors Olivia Lutke and Paige Clark are still working on figuring out where they fit best into the mix. Their maturity and work ethic have already had a positive effect on the team. Sophomore Tori Moffit is a standout cross country runner who is giving track and field a second chance. With her speed and endurance she is going to make a ferocious track athlete. Equally impressive is sophomore Zoey Thompson. Known better as a wrestler than a runner, were still figuring out where to use her, but I guarantee she will be a major point scorer for the team.strengths Depth and worth ethic. These kids play harder than others work.

working on As the only coach for nearly 40 girls my main focus, besides improving our fitness, will be trying to teach our young athletes all of the different events and skills needed for each.conference With back-to-back Division 4 state titles in cross country and as defending conference champions the start money has to be on Beal City. With that being said, they are usually weak in their depth, it might be possible to beat them in a dual meet.goals We could have a chance at a regional champion-ship but wed also really like to qualify the entire team onto the MITCA Team State Finals again.big meets The entire Highland Conference is tough. We expect a battle at every meet. At regionals, Onekama will be our major threat.

David Raymond, Andrew Fechter, and Levi Aten are juniors who have came in ready to improve on the high goals they achieved last year. These individuals have been doing a great job of lead-ing by example. James Monhead returns for his second season following a state-qualifying year as a sprinter. David Raymond returns for his 3rd sea-son following a state-qualifying year as a hurdler more driven than ever. Andrew Fechter returns for his 3rd sea-son following a state-qualifying year in pole vault with plans to return.newcomers The incoming fresh-man class looks strong and should be able to make an immediate impact.

Lucas Madden, Kalob Bellows and John Feller have a lot of potential and a competitive drive that will enable them to improve. Overall, the fresh-man class and upperclassmen new-comers have been working hard.strengths Our strength this year as a team is the strong work ethic and willingness to practice hard. We look balanced on the track and the field, which is a plus.working on We have been focus-ing on doing things the right way with form and quality practices. The upper-classmen demonstrating this through-out the season to a young team will be beneficial to the program.conference Evart will again be strong as they come in as defending championships.goals Our goal will be to win the Highland Conference champion-ship as a team. All individuals mak-ing improvements and setting per-sonal records throughout the season is always a focus. Returning the state qualifiers again and with more indi-viduals would be a great reward for their hard work.

accomplishments Improved our performance as a team, finished in the middle of the pack at most invitationals and the girls won the Whittemore0-Prescott Invite in 2014returnees Junior Laraiah Schichtel is a 100 and 300 hurdler and also runs a leg on the 1600 and 800 relay teams. Sophomore Valerie Aten is a field event expert where she consistently places in vault, shot and discus. Sophomore Ranessa Cooley runs sprints and sprint relays. Juniors Elizabeth Ashton and Haley Heistand are returning to help the team in different capacities. Elizabeth will throw discus for us while Haley will run middle distance. Chardonaie Libbett is a tough putter and discus thrower returning.newcomers - Freshman Katilyn Jones runs every-thing from a 200 to an 800. She also has the ability to long jump. Freshman Kelsey Stephan is our 100, 200 expert. Kelsey will also man a leg in the 1600 and 800 relays. Freshman Christina Frye will compete in the vault, 800 relay and 1600 relay. She will also run an open 400 for us quite often, too. Freshman Dakota Burden will run hurdles shot and discus. Dakota is able to do multiple events because of her strength. Freshman Gabby Brown is a middle distance runner. She will run the 800, the 3200 relay and well consider adding the 1600 as we get rolling into the season. Senior Elsa Giesart is a driven 1600 and 3200 runner who will run a leg in the 3200 relay also. Freshman Samantha Russell is a force to be reckoned with in the shot and discus. Freshman Alli Sherd is a hard-working freshman that has improved in the 3 weeks of practice immensely. We are hoping that she can

fill a hole in the distance field. Kim Johnson is a great addition to our team as a long jumper and middle distance runner. Christin McDermott is a vaulter and developing mid distance runner. Charity Kobiska is willing to work hard to fill holes in addition to vault-ing. Freshman Kiley Branscombe is a strong distance runner for us and Audrey Thompson will also run mid sdistance.strengths This team works well together. They understand that hard work, dedication and team-work will win meets. This team is interested in improv-ing every time they compete.working on We are working on becoming com-petitive in all events. Distance has been a weakness for us and we are hoping to improve on that. We have the personnel to do it this year. We will strive to improve every meet.conference Beal Citygoals Our team goals will include improving at every meet. We have quite a few freshman on the team, improving at each meet will be crucial to our success at the end of the season. It is our goal to be over 500 again this season. last year. We had a lot of kids injured last year and because of that we scrambled to put kids in positions that they might not normally play. This season, most kids are comfortable with where they will play. I also think we will be more consistent hit-ting the ball. We struggled in the sixth through ninth spots in the lineup. I dont see us having that problem this season.working on Developing pitching and working together as a team.

I have been impressed with our fielding and think we have good depth on the mound. Brian Trager is a great leader for us he is a really good ball player and works hard everyday.working on As with every team we need to have timely hit-ting and throw strikes we lost some close games last year where

we either never got the big hit or walked to many guys.goals We try to set high goals every year last year we were a really young team and came up short on a lot of our goals but with more experience this year I think that we could finish near the top of the conference and challenge for a district title.big games Beal City is the best team in our league and will be hard to beat. Pine River has experienced pitching back that will make them tough and Marion has had good tournament suc-cess the last couple years and could be tough also.

is positive. We must continue to support one another in each practice and meet.working on I would say paying attention to detail in our daily workouts and drills. As is the case in most sports, it isnt always what is done, but how it is done that makes the key difference.conference I feel on the girls side it will be a toss up between Manton and Beal City for the conference crown. Sleeper may be NMC as they have a strong group of athletes com-ing in.goals Success for us this year will be for each and every athlete to improve them-selves in their individual events. By doing that we will be competitive as a team. We have 14 freshmen coming into the program and they are all athletes that will score for us.strengths Field events and distance will be our strengths. Hurdles and sprints have a lot of young athletes in them. Hopefully they will

develop quickly.working on We need to develop at least two strong relay teams. We cannot give up 20 points in these events like we did last year. Essentially it is a 40-point swing. This will have to happen with freshmen involved a large task is at hand!conference We have already seen Pine River and they are very solid with good num-bers. Manton has talent from a very successful junior high team. Lake City always competes for a championship and Evart always kills you with their distance athletes. In general, the conference this year is going to be very strong just like every year in the Highland Conference. Senior captains Emily Jo Mulder and Emily Morgan join with juniors Melanie Heuker, Kylie Lanser, and Anna Shaarda as midfielders and strik-ers returning as starters. Senior midfielder Brittany Hoekwater, sophomore midfield-ers Holly MacLean and Carissa Smith, and sophomore defender Rebecca Dieterman return and should play a prominent role on the 2015 Comet team. Sophomore goalkeeper Kendra VanPolen gained a little experience last year and should prove to be a leader between the posts.newcomers Junior Bailie Traviss and freshman Ellie Haan are strong play-ers defensively, while freshmen Maddie Lanser and Desiree Ebels have shown scoring ability up front.strengths This team has more depth than weve ever had in the six years of fielding a girls team. As seven of our girls are dual sport athletes in track as well as soccer, we may need that depth. I believe that we are strong defensively and we have a number of girls that can score. In addition to our soccer prow-ess, this seems to be a close-knit group of girls who not only have a good work ethic, but who are great kids as well.working on Our biggest weakness at this point would be trying to tie together

offensive and defensive units into one seamless unit. Knowing teammates more completely on the pitch is another area on whcih we are working.conference Of the eight teams in the Northern Michigan Soccer League, Cheboygan is the clear favorite. They ran the table in the conference last year (and possibly outside of the confer-ence, as well), mostly by large margins and won their district before losing a regional game in a shootout. We won the Southern Division of the conference last year and I like our chances again. Big Rapids Crossroads, Gladwi and Clare will be trying to dethrone us and are always tough games for us.goals In wins and losses and tourna-ments and such, we are looking to win a little hardware. We host a tournament, we want to defend our southern division conference championship and com-pete for the overall league title. A district championship would also be a goal. Aside from wins and losses, we want to grow as soccer players, as individuals, as teammates, and as Christians. We want other teams to know that we are Christian by the way that we conduct ourselves. We want God to be glorified by our actions.big games Crossroads Academy is always a big rivalry game for us. Houghton Lake and Roscommon are also measuring sticks for us. record 4-12returnees Alex Stanton, junior, was third individually at conference championship, qualified for states individually with third at regionals and placed 10th at states. He will be my first golfer. Daniel Malkowski and Kesha Stevenson will also be returning from last year. Miranda Anderson and RJ Parish are exploring whether they will return depending on work schedules.newcomers Ian Fiorini, Josh Carson, Jared Nolan, Aaron Epperly, Aaliyah Andrews and Vince Ferguson are all new players and are just learning the game and finding equip-ment. They will be competing for position and match time.strengths Attitude will be our biggest strength. We know

we are a team without a lot of experience so we will be relaxed and having fun without a lot of pressure.working on More than half the team has not played before, rules and golfing etiquette will be a big focus early on. Finding the kids clubs from the last 10 years instead of 20-30 years old will also be important.conference Suttons Bay is always the favorite, Leland should be second, after that its always up in the air...Kingsley might be the sleeper.goals Individually, I hope Alex Stanton gets to states again, which would be an incredible accomplishment. Team wise, just learning the game and having fun will make this year a success.experience Two seniors, four juniors, one sophomore and four freshmen

Our hope is to continue to develop this area, and improve in the high jump and other field events. Our sprinters are working very hard as are our distance runners.conference Benzie Central is strong with a very large team as is Kingsley. record 7-0 in Highland dual meetsaccomplisments Highland Conference champs, regional champs, 3rd at MITCA Finalsreturnees Santana Scott- Junior Distance Runner- Returning HC and Regional Champ in the 1600 and 3200. Santana is in the best shape of his life and appears primed to have a great season. He recently ran 9:56(3200), 4:40(1600) and 2:05(800) at the Saginaw Valley Invitational. Josh Woods-Sophomore Distance Runner- Last year Josh ran 4:46(1600), 2:08(800) and 10:22(3200) last year as a freshman. Running with Santana he gives a very solid 1-2 punch in the distance races. Major Griffin- Sophomore- Sprints/Mid-Distance- Major ran 53.7(400), 2:11(800) and 25.2(200) last year as a freshman. He is a little bigger, stronger and faster this year and could be ready for a breakout season. Dillon Danley (Junior) and Cody Pritchard(Sophomore)will anchor our long jump, sprints and sprint relays this year. They were both a big part of very successful relay teams last season and their experience will be a great asset on a relatively young team. Zach Parshall-Junior-High Jump- Zach went 62 last year and had looked

good in practice this spring. He leads a group of jumpers that should be a strength for us this year.newcomers Trevin Ladd- Sophomore- Trevin will be dual sporting this spring as he comes to us from the baseball team. Trevin will be a very strong contributor in the high jump, 400 and relays. Rob Tapling- Junior- will add depth to hurdles, sprints and relays. Rob also comes to us as a dual sport athlete. Andrew Bengry-Junior- Another dual sporter will give us much needed help in the vault and hurdles. Ben Randall- Freshman- Ben is a very versatile athlete who will make a big impact in anything from sprint relays to the 1600 to jumps.strenghts We should be very sound from 400 on up with Major, Trevin, Ben, Josh and Santana. I also anticipate that our jumps will be very solid.working on Our throwers are very young and inexperienced, and we are working on new relay combinations after the loss of a couple of seniors.conference I think that there are number of teams that could challenge for the HC champi-onship. Everyone seems to have strengths and weaknesses. We hope to be in the mix with Lake City, Manton, Beal City and Pine River.goals It is always our goal to win the HC and anything after that is icing on the cake.big meets They are all important in the HC.
