Good Luck Hornets!

Spirits and expectations are on the rise for the Frazee boys’ golf team, as they enter the 2011 season. Yes, they do have the reigning Class 1A state champion returning to defend his title in junior Beau Hanson. But there is more to be optimistic for the Hornets as their team expecta-tions are at an all-time high, as well. “I am pretty confident we should be right there in the top three to four teams in the Heart O’Lakes Confer-ence,” said Frazee head coach John Olson. “We are expecting big things as a team.” With Hanson returning and post-ing under-par scores, the Hornets also return last year’s state qualifier junior Zack Ziegler, along with Josh Kertscher, to provide a solid top three part of the lineup. The key to the team’s overall suc-cess may come down to who wrangles the No. 4 spot on the team, Olson said. “We need a No. 4 golfer to step up and break 90,” Olson said. “Zack and Josh also need to consistently shoot under bogey (80-84), as well.” Hanson is obviously looking to re-peat as the Class 1A state champion and he’s been preparing for his defense of it well during the offseason. He will also be competing in a few junior MGA/PGA events during the season, but now also has his team’s

success in mind. “He’s excited and has been helping with the team,” Olson said. There are several players vying for the No. 4 spot on the team, as well as the final two spots. Two of those in the hunt are Travis Gray and Trevor Stilke, Olson said. The Hornets will open the season, weather willing, Wednesday, April 13, at Wildflower and will have their first

conference meet Monday, April 18, at West Central.

The Frazee girls’ golf team has been resurrected for the 2011 season and will field a varsity team for the first time since 2007. The Lady Hornets have seven girls out, with senior Brianna Schepper be-ing the only golfer with varsity experi-ence, after playing as an eighth grader in 2007. But even though it’s the first year of varsity competition in almost four years, the Lady Hornets are not totally green to the sport. “Most of the girls have played on the junior varsity the last few years, so they are experienced with meets,” said Frazee girls’ coach Dave Conzemius. Those who will be vying for varsity playing time, along with Schepper, includes sophomore Jeni Bergstrom, freshmen Mary Tycshen, Cara Roers and Kerria Robinson, eighth grader Alexis Parsons and seventh grader Sydney Dahlgren. “Brianna has been playing competi-tively since her eighth grade season, so we are hoping to see her scores drop in the 50’s (in nine holes),” Conzemius said. Bergstrom and Tycshen each have played in the offseason, while Roers and Robinson also have experience on the golf course. “We may not be in the top half of the meets we go to, but the girls won’t embarrass themselves, either,” the Frazee coach said.

Gaining places and scores isn’t the goal for this year, though, just keeping the numbers out and gaining more will be the primary concern of this year’s Lady Hornets team. “We don’t have any expectations concerning competition, but I just want to see all these girls improve through the season and just enjoy the game,” Conzemius said. “My goal is to

keep the varsity team going for the fu-ture.” Frazee opens the season at Wild-flower Golf Course Tuesday, April 19.

There will be a learning curve to fol-low for the Frazee boys’ track and field team during the 2011 season. Although the Hornets do return one of the fastest sprinters and top long jumpers in the area in senior Forrest Jackson, after him, the lineup will be spread with youth and inexperience. Jackson returns after qualifying for the Class 1A state meet in the 200-me-ter dash and will be a contender in the long jump, 400 and 100 dash events. “Forrest already PR’d (personal re-cord) in his first meet in the long jump with a 21 plus foot mark,” said Frazee boys’ track coach Brian Tangen. “I’m excited for him because he’s healthier this year.” The Hornets will be young and inex-perienced after Jackson, with several seniors out who are new to the sports and four juniors. “We have good numbers out in sev-enth through sophomore and have 29 out, which is the most we’ve had in quite a few years,” Tangen said. The team’s strength will be in the mid-distance to distance races and will be thin in the sprints. “We’ll have to find where each ath-lete goes in what event throughout the season,” the Frazee coach said. Sophomore Cody Nordquist will be one of the Hornets’ top hurdlers, while

sophomore Brett Gildersleeve will lead a contingent of throwers. “We may not be able to fill every event, but our goal is to have everyone peaking by the end of the season,” Tan-gen said. “We also want to put together some good relays at some point in the season.” The Hornets will open their outdoor

season Friday, April 15, in Perham’s Anderson-Cole Invite. They will host the Daggett Invite May 12.

The Frazee girls’ track and field team will be dominated by youth, but there is a good dose of talent to go with it, as well. It will be up to the Hornet track and field coaches find that talent and put them in the right positions to suc-ceed, which will be a work in progress throughout the season. “We have 28 girls out, which is up a bit from past years and we have strong under classmen this year,” said Frazee co-head girls’ coach Chuck Wake. The Hornets do return freshman state qualifier Ellie Bachman, who made it in the 800-meter run and holds the school record in the event with a 2:24. “Ellie is what you call a tweener, she is in between a sprinter and mid-distance runner,” Wake said. “She is a great sprinter for our 4x200 relay team, but the 800 is made for her. We may try and push her in the 400, as well.” The tri-captains of the team include junior McKinzie Tangen, senior Su-zanne Vetter (only senior out) and ju-nior Krissy Marlen. Vetter will be a key in the mid to long distance races, along with pole vault, while Marlen and Tangen will both be hurdlers and relay runners. “Krissy is also a good high jumper and is at 4-2 already and McKinzie is a solid runner and shows great leadership with the younger girls,” Wake included. Other contributors this season will be sophomore Ruth Goranson and ju-nior Katie Halvorson, who will be a mid-distance runner. “We have a big number of sprinters

out and we also have a strong showing from our junior high kids,” the Frazee coach included. The Hornets will be in action out-side for the first time Friday, April 15, in the Perham Anderson-Cole Invite. Frazee will host the Daggett Invite May 12.

The stage is set for the Frazee base-ball team to defend its Heart O’Lakes Conference championship, as plenty of Hornets return from last year’s team. The Hornets return four seniors and six starters off the HOL title team, along with good depth. “We’ve never had as good as depth as we have this year,” said first-year head coach Dustin Geiser. “We have a lot of good role players who will be competing for positions in practice. No job will be given out this year.” That includes a deep pitching rotation, which keyed Frazee’s run last season. Seniors Brandon VanWatermulon, Matt Brower and junior Jacob Gal-brecht all return as key pitchers. Behind them will be junior Cody Piper, sophomores Jordan Ketter and Tyler Wacker, providing crucial depth on the mound. “We have a couple of lights out pitchers and just good balance,” Geis-er said. “These guys are also flexible.” Behind the pitchers will also be some solid defense, with the catcher position pretty deep, as well. Wacker, along with Class 1A state champion in wrestling Cody Sorenson and Galbrecht will secure the catching duties. “They are all good athletes,” Geiser said. “It’s good to have a surplus at catcher.” The infield returns plenty of good ex-perience and talent in Ketter, Brower, VanWatermulon, Galbrecht, Dan Janu, Sorenson and junior Hayden Hoskins. The outfield will be a bit more youth-

ful, with senior Brady Breitenfeldt, Wack-er and Logan Dahlgren seeing time there. “The one thing this team is, is ver-satile,” Geiser said. “We’ll rarely have the same nine starting each game.” The Hornets also will be pretty po-tent with their bats, which will pos-sess both power and speed. With plenty of experience back and a deep team, confidence is there for the Hornets, but not overconfidence. “Baseball is such a hard sport to pre-dict,” Geiser said. “But if we can play

ball like we are capable of, we could be playing deep into June.” The Hornets will be at Lake Park-Audubon Tuesday, April 12, to open the season, while their home opener isn’t until Tuesday, May 3, when they host Bertha-Hewitt.

There will be plenty of depth, along with talent and experience, showcased on the Frazee softball team this sea-son. The Lady Hornets have the majority of their team back from last year, sans two 2010 seniors, and depth will be a strength. “I’m excited to see the kids on the field and I feel good with the experience we have com-ing back,” said Frazee head coach Dave Trautman. The new 43-foot distance from plate to pitching mound will be a concern, but Traut-man feels his depth on the pitching mound will be fine. Each of seniors Brittney Blauert and Emma Buhr saw good innings last year and Trautman is hoping the extra two feet in distance doesn’t af-fect their accuracy. “You need to throw strikes,” Trautman said. “Emma has the most pitching experience and she had some good outings last year. She can find the strike zone and can change up her speeds.” Sophomore Alexis Tappe

and junior Beth Anderson will also see time on the mound. The Lady Hornets do have solid experience back defen-sively, featured by senior shortstop Kari Shipman, who was an All-State second team selection in 2010. Sophomore Ashley Bach-mann has some seasoning at first base, while Tappe will an-chor second.

Junior Bayleigh Antonsen also is an experienced third baseman, while freshman Tay-lor Tappe and Anderson will split time behind the plate at catcher. The defense is stout up the middle with Shipman, Alexis Tappe securing the infield at shortstop and second base, re-spectively. There is more of a question in centerfield, where

three will be vying for playing time, in Blauert, senior Katie Byer and sophomore Katie McCorquodale. There is good experience in right field with senior Chloe Streeper and left with senior Sadie Stender. “I think we’ll have a good de-fensive squad,” Trautman said. Frazee also should be able to plate plenty of runs, with Ship-

man being an RBI-machine, with solid bats around her. “Our lineup will be flex-ible, so I think we’ll have a good mix of power and speed,” Trautman added.

The learning curve will be an im-portant aspect to the Detroit Lakes baseball team this season, with a slew of inexperience dotting the lineup. What experience the Lakers do have is talented, but there will be plenty of unknowns entering the 2011 schedule. “We don’t have a lot of at-bats and many innings pitched,” said DL head coach Steve Fuhs. “We have many spots which are wide open because of inexperience, so players will have to fight for positions.”

At the top of DL’s pitching rotation will be senior returners Ben Lindquist (lefty), Jordan Manning and Nate Bak-er.

Lindquist and Manning were able to throw solid innings last summer during the Legion season, while Bak-er suffered a hand injury and missed much of the year. “Our number one concern in our pitching is throwing strikes,” Fuhs said. “We need to get after batters and throw strikes. We don’t have that strikeout pitcher, but we can’t afford to give up many walks, either.” Juniors who will be vying for time on the mound include Travis Dorff, Ben Gailfus, Brian Labat and Kyle Singer. “We need four starters for the sea-

son, so these guys will get their opportunities,” Fuhs said. One of DL’s strengths will be at catcher, with Labat and sophomore Kirk McLeod having a handle on the posi-tion. Labat saw most of

catching duties last year during the high school season, while McLeod played well behind the plate during the Legion season.

“I feel good about our catching, which is good, because after pitcher, catcher is the next most important po-sition,” the DL coach added. Senior Connor McLeod will anchor the infield at shortstop after having a good year at the position in 2010. He will be the leader of the infield and possesses good range and arm to plug the middle. Senior Ryan Berg saw time last year at third base, while Baker will start out at second base, Lindquist will see time at first and Manning will play infield, as well. Juniors who will vie for infield time include Brennon Benscoter, Jake Johnson, Gailfus and Labat, who can play first base, as well. The outfield returns Logan Baker, Jon Gilson and Manning, with oth-er potential outfielders being Dorff, Casey Fonder and Singer, along with others who will be contending for play-ing time. The offensive output will be keyed by the top of the lineup early on in the season, with both McLeods, Labat and Manning having good seasons at the

plate in 2010. “We’ll probably be a gap-hitting team, since we don’t have a ton of pow-er,” Fuhs included. “We have good ath-letes, so we’ll be able to run a bit.” The Lakers start the season by host-ing the first three games: Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton April 12; Fergus Falls April 15 and Wadena-Deer Creek April 26.

The answers are there in hitting and fielding for the Detroit Lakes soft-ball team, with the big question mark being on the pitching mound. After almost four years of being the starting pitcher, Callea Butz gradu-ated and left the Lakers with a ton of experience. But the void she left will be a work

in progress for the 2011 Lakers, who will have up to four hurlers trying to fill that hole. “Our strength will be our hitting and our fielding should be better,” said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. “But we’ll need pitching first and fore-most. We’ve had the luxury of having two good pitchers the last three to four years.” But now, it’s time to rebuild that po-sition. DL enters the season with no pitch-

ers who saw any significant action last year, although a couple of pitchers saw the mound during the summer varsity season. Junior Haley Baer threw most of the summer and pitched on the junior varsity in 2010, while sophomore April Stevenson also has some pitching ex-perience. Eighth grader Chaz Butz, Callea’s younger sister, and junior Laurenn Johnson also each have a chance to see

time on the mound. Adding to the chal-lenge is the fact this is the first season the mound has been moved from 40-feet to 43-feet. “The main thing is the ability to throw strikes,” Kirchner said. “Pitching from a longer distance makes

that more challenging.” The young and inexperienced DL pitchers will have to rely on their de-fense behind them, so putting the ball in play will be vital. That means throwing strikes and avoiding the walk. “Our defense will be better, so hope-fully the pitchers can throw strikes and put the ball in play,” Kirchner added. The infield will be anchored by ju-nior catcher and Mid-State All-Confer-

ence catcher Brianna Seebold. She will be a big help behind the plate for the young pitchers, but also possesses a strong arm to throw out would-be base stealers. “Brianna also has a solid bat and she will be driving in a lot of runs this year,” the DL coach said. “She has ma-tured physically and is stronger, so I think we could see some home runs from her this year.” Junior captain Jenna Lamb will give DL a speedy left fielder, as well as a reliable stick, while captain Amanda Young will man third base and give the Lakers another strong bat at the top of the order. At first base, Arika Johnson and Sadie Larson will each see time at first base as first-year starters, while Laurenn Johnson will be DL’s second baseman, when not pitching. Others who will fill-in at second base include Annika Anderson and Jo-hanna Grimsley. Sophomore Kathryn Kinney will give the Lakers a dependable glove at shortstop, who also can cover good ground, while Haily Thom will add depth at third base. Hanah Ianiro will plug the hole up the middle at centerfield, with Lamb in left and Courtney Maneval, Thom, and senior Mikaela Martin filling at rightfield and depth.

The Lakers will be looking to be moving their baserunners, with con-sistent hitters throughout the lineup, as well. “We have talented hitters, speed and good bunters,” Kirchner said. The Lakers return as Mid-State Con-ference champions, but the 20-game schedule brings plenty of challenges. Another good bit of news is the Lak-ers will make their debut on the new fields at Snappy Park. There are now regulation fences, new dugouts and new fields. The season opener, weather permit-ting, is Monday, April 11, with Lake Park-Audubon coming to town.

Although depth will be an issue early in the season, the Detroit Lakes boys’ tennis team will be solid with their returning players from last year. The Lakers will have con-sistent play from their top three singles, while DL’s top doubles team bring some good seasoning, as well. “We have a lot of experience back in our one through three singles players,” said DL head coach Wade Johnson. “We are teetering on the edge on being a good team.” Senior Jesse Meyer will be needed to provide the leader-ship, Johnson said, and will be DL’s No. 1 singles player. Sophomore Isaac Fondrick will hold the second singles slot, while eighth grader Alex Fondrick returns as DL’s No. 3 player. “Jesse Meyer hits the ball well and Isaac is young, but still has good experience,” Johnson added. “Alex can hit the ball well as an eighth grad-er, too. All three put in a ton of time during the offseason to improve.” Junior Cody Jordan im-provement by leaps and bounds last year and will be a contender as the Lakers’ fourth singles player. At doubles, last year’s usual second or third duo of senior Garret Duncan and junior De-rick Brehm was solid. Now they will be bumped up to play as the top doubles team. Junior Ethan Brekke and

senior Andy Schupp will team up, as will senior Collin Har-ris and junior Tom Warweg. Others who will be vying for playing time include fresh-men Hunter Hedstrom and Austin Nelson and juniors Ke-van Brown and Cody Knopf. “I believe we’ll be contend-

ers in the Mid-State Confer-ence,” Johnson said. “The sec-tion will be tough, with Thief River Falls being a top team.” The Lakers open their sea-son at home against Mid-State Conference foe Wadena-Deer Creek April 7.

Lakers looking to play themselves back in stateBY BRIAN WIERIMA

[email protected]

When the Detroit Lakes boys’ golf team was loading up in their vans during a torren-tial downpour after the Class 2A state meet, there was a bit-ter taste lingering all the way back home. The Lakers played their best golf of the state meet on the second day, as they were making a rally up the ranks. Unfortunately, they didn’t play all their best the first day and the second day of compe-tition was cancelled midway through the 18-hole round due to thunderstorms which were racking the area hard. That bitter taste will re-main with the Lakers until they can make it back to state and redeem themselves — and that path to state starts now. “We have five players back from last year’s state team and all have that bitter taste in their mouths,” said DL head coach Bob Gorden. “We are not going to talk about state, though, but instead get ready for the season and prepare to play a very com-petitive schedule.” The Lakers will be led into the season by their two seniors in Connor Hedstrom and Tan-ner Lane. The other three state golf-ers who return include soph-omores Karter Smith and Austin Rusness, along with freshman Michael Herzog.

But the Lakers are deep, with a three quality juniors who will be competing for var-sity slots, which include Rick Hutchinson, Tyler Baukol and Nate Bausman. Sophomore Sam Goral and Brady Eilertson are also vying for playing time, as well. “Our three juniors were all good enough to have played on the section team,” Gorden said. “The competition will be high in practice to gain your spot on the varsity team that week. That only makes us a better team.” Lane will be joining his teammates a little later into the season, depending on how far his Fargo Force junior hockey team goes in the play-offs. The Lakers also used their state meet last year as motiva-tion to get better in the sum-mer, in which many of them played many golf tourna-ments. Much like in 2010, DL will probably have four to five dif-ferent lowmen during meets, showing how deep and talent this group really is. Smith started to separate himself some from the pack by consistently shooting un-der par in the latter half of the season, though. The schedule will also be challenging, with meets in Morton, the University of Min-nesota Invite at Edinburgh, the Jordan Invite (site of the

Class 2A state meet June 15-16) and a couple of home meets which attracted some of the top teams in the state. “This is probably the best schedule we’ve ever had,” Gorden said. “Having this tough of a schedule merits more focus in each meet.” The Lakers opened their schedule Monday, April 11, in Becker and played Wildflower Wednesday, April 13.

Young and determined: DL girls ready for repeat runBY BRIAN WIERIMA

Last year’s Detroit Lakes girls’ golf season was their proving ground, after qualifying for the Class 1A state meet, despite their eldest golfer being only a sophomore. Now for the 2011 season, the Lak-ers want to prove more with their en-tire team back from last year’s state squad. “Our goal is to make state and place again,” said DL head coach Cali Har-rier, who took over for Jen Hendrick-son. “The expectations are much big-ger this year.” As they should be after a third-place finish in the Class 1A state meet last season. The Lakers still don’t have a senior on the team, but will return junior Courtney Hedstrom, freshmen Matty Tschider and Trisa Hutchinson — who all were DL’s top three golfers in 2010. Also returning are freshmen Nata-lie Roth and Emma Thompson, along with junior Ashley Friesen and eighth grader Sydney Busker. DL will also be adding seventh grad-er Kate Smith, who could prove to be an integral component to an already potent lineup. Hedstrom returns and was voted on as captain of the team after being

probably DL’s most consistent scorer last year. “She is consistent either as our No. 1 golfer or our No. 3,” Harrier said. “She is a good leader.” Hutchinson and Tschider also proved to have breakout seasons just as eighth graders, but they both are expected to improve on that after a strong offseason last summer. “We have three girls we can consis-tently shoot in 80’s or low 80’s, with all breaking 80 last year,” Harrier added. Each of Thompson and Roth broke the 100 mark, with the latter breaking 90, as well. With nine on the roster, it will give Harrier the flexibility to make lineups during a compacted spring schedule. “We are again going to take it one meet at a time and we want to be peak-ing by the end of May,” the DL coach said. “We have 30 girls out, with a good showing in the Middle School grades, which is good for our future.” Harrier is a first-year varsity coach, but has been an assistant under Hen-drickson for the past several years. She was the interim head coach when Hendrickson delivered her first child. Harrier was hired as the head coach this past offseason when Hendrickson resigned. Jill Schramel will be Harrier’s as-sistant coach this year.

The Lakers opened the season — weather permitting — Saturday, April 16, in Staples at The Legacy Golf course.

It’s a new situation for the Detroit Lakes girls’ track and field coaching staff, but it’s one which will be a joy to take on. For the first time in quite some time, the once Laker strength of leadership, is now a little thin after last year’s graduating class departed and a slew of injuries to upper-classmen have decimated DL’s experienced tracksters. “It’s a different place we’ve been in for a long, long time,” said DL head girls’ coach Mike Labine. “The quality is no doubt there, but it’s very young. There’s lots of poten-tial, but it’s unproven.” Take for instance, last year’s state 4x100 relay team for the Lakers. All four sprint-ers were due back this season, after a state meet in which they shattered the DLHS re-cord and placed eighth in the Class 1A meet. But Rose Jackson’s family moved, Bre Halbur had recon-structive ankle surgery, Nata-lie Hoffert broke her leg in the first meet in gymnastics this year and Jess Stelter broke her toe during gymnastics, as well. All were looked upon to provide valuable leadership to the host of younger athletes

who are basically just cutting their teeth in track this year. “We also lost Karli Ker-zman to an ACL knee injury in basketball, so we lost up to 10 upper-classmen for this season,” Labine said. “We still have good numbers in the low-er classes, just a lot of inexpe-rience.” But that won’t discourage the Laker squad, as already plenty of eighth grade through sophomore girls are ready to produce. “We are concerned with the athletes who are here,” Labi-ne said. “We have quality with our younger kids.” Stelter, Halbur and Hoffert can potentially return by the section meet, as well. Junior Alexis Schermer will be heard from plenty, though, this season after a strong offseason, Labine said. “She had probably one of the best offseasons anyone here has had in a long time,” Labine added. Schermer has already picked up where she left off last June in the high jump, af-ter she hit for a 5-0 Saturday in the indoor Concordia College Invite. She also went for a 29-11.5 in the triple jump and will also be a specialist in the relay events. “She has a unique talent

and will excel in jumps,” La-bine said. Eighth grader Allison Berg also will be a solid contributor, with triple jump being a strong event for her after she was third Saturday with a 32-9.5. Berg already knows what it’s like to be thrusted to var-sity after she filled in admi-rably during the gymnastics season. “She is already a varsity athlete,” Labine said. Eighth grader Lindsey Hei-necke made a splash last year in the sprints as a seventh grader and will be looked upon for improvement this year. She was second in the 55-meter dash at 7.63 and third in the 200 dash with a time of 27.50. “She’s capable of being an elite runner and she’s just an eighth grader,” the DL coach stated. “We just need to be careful with her and not put too much pressure on her.” The distance crew will have strength in numbers, with eighth grader Abby Ullyott being one of the pack leaders after a solid cross country sea-son. Also adding to the Lakers’ strong depth are freshman Mackenzie Foltz, sophomores Kiki Schumacher, Miranda Olson and a host of other younger runners who can

make some noise in the 800 through 3,400 runs. Eighth grader Shay Nielsen will be the leader in throws and has already showed vast im-provement as a young thrower. “She will be very good down the line,” Labine said. “It’s not going to be ‘if’, it’s going to be ‘when.’” The Lakers’ team goals will be different than years past, as the sites will be set on win-ning the Mid-State Conference meet. DL also will host four meets, including the Section 8-2A True Team meet (May 10), the Section 8-2A prelimi-naries (June 1) and the Craig Fredrickson Invite (May 5). The reason for all the home meets is the new track and field complex, which was con-structed last fall. Also added with be new hurdles, which was donated by Erin Seaworth-Briard, who purchased them for $10,000. “We’ll have first-class, col-legiate hurdles on a brand new track,” Labine included. “It should be pretty exciting for the kids.” Laker ScheduleDetroit Lakes girls’ track and field 2011 schedule:

The goal of winning the Mid-State Conference meet has been pumped up a little more for the Detroit Lakes boys’ track and field team, after fin-ishing as the runner-up the past two years. The Lakers have solid numbers out with 75 athletes, which included 50 up-

per classmen who bring some experi-ence. But there are lots of freshmen and sophomores out who have inexperi-ence and who will be needed to fill events this season. “We do have a lot of first-timers out, which is good for our numbers,” said DL head boys’ track and field coach Steve Zamzo. “We’ll find spots for them which fit their skills.” The distance crew, though, will

be DL’s strength. The Lakers are deep and talented in the distance events. Senior Dylan Ramstad-Skoyles will lead a talented pack, which includes Pat and Wes Bakken, Mike Okeson, Jason Stallman, Travis King, Clem Foltz, Cody Okeson and a host of oth-ers who will contribute in the 800 through 3,200-meter runs, as well as relay events.

Junior Ryan Kalberer and Montana Johnson will head the sprinters, while senior Bryce Dutton, Levi Fairbanks and junior Joe Hager will be the throwing crew. In the long and triple jump will be Steven La-bine, Riley Olson and Kal-berer, along with younger athletes who will fill in the

voids. Eric Larson returns with DL’s only experience in the pole vault, while leading hurdlers will be Labine, Ethan VanOffelen, eighth grader Parker Jackson and Clem. But as the season progresses, Zam-zo hopes the development of the inex-perienced younger athletes goes, as well. DL also will host four meets, includ-ing the Section 8-2A True Team meet

(May 10), the Section 8-2A preliminar-ies (June 1) and the Craig Fredrickson Invite (May 5). The reason for all the home meets is the new track and field complex, which was constructed last fall. Also added with be new hurdles, which was donated by Erin Seaworth-Briard, who purchased them for $10,000. The first outdoor meet is scheduled for April 5, on the new track in DL, but weather and conditions may prevent that. After that, the next outdoor meet is scheduled for April 12, in Fergus Falls.

LP-A girls’ golf to have fresh start in new conference

BY BRIAN [email protected]

There won’t be much change on the Lake Park-Audubon boys’ golf team this season and that is a good thing. The Raiders return all their players from last year’s squad, along with all the experience they gained. The one big change is also posi-tive, as LP-A will now play in the Pine to Prairie Conference, which will be against schools their own size. “The kids are excited about the new conference,” said LP-A head boys’ golf coach Nicole Seyfried. “We are hoping to do better in this conference against school our size.” LP-A enters the season with freshman Dalton Kohler as their top golfer, after he had a consistent and solid year in 2010. Others who return with varsity experience include Beau Svobodny, seniors Eric Zachariason, Derek Braseth, Mason Nelson, freshman Isiah Pearson and Elijah Beaudine. “We’ll have good depth with a few other new golfers in the mix and will have playoffs in practice for varsity,” Seyfried said. “That will make them work that much harder in practice.” With the depth being deeper and the experience better, expectations are higher this year. “We are hoping to do better in the conference and see a couple of our golf-ers qualify for sections,” the LP-A coach said. “As a team, we want to be shooting around bogey golf and just be consistent.” The LP-A Invite will be at Forest Hills Golf Course May 10.

BY BRIAN [email protected]

Although there isn’t a golfer who will consistently lead the Lake Park-Audubon girls’ golf team meet in and meet out, the Raiders have a good chance of building a solid season. Depth will be a strength for the Raiders, as they return everyone from a year ago. “All of our golfers are so close and they will be pushing each other in practice and in meets,” said LP-A head coach Marge Beaudine. “All six of our varsity players are back, too.” Seniors Autumn Ricke and Sydney Schiffner are back, along with juniors Allison Tate, Brianna Wuollet, Jessica Hovelson and Maria Veit. The Raiders will also be entering the new Pine to Prairie Conference, one which has schools the same size as LP-A. “Sometimes change can be good,” Beaudine added. “We’ll be seeing new golf courses and we won’t know the competition. I’d love to see us finish in the top three of the conference.” Improvement from last year’s scores is also a big hopeful for the LP-A squad, the LP-A coach included. “I’m hoping to see four or five strokes off of last year’s scores,” Beaudine said. The keys will be improvement in putting, after the players improved some on their chipping in 2010. The Raiders will open the season April 19, at Red Lake County.

Raider baseball to build off of 2010 season

Raider softball taking right steps to improvement

BY BRIAN [email protected]

After graduating 11 seniors from the 2010 Lake Park-Audu-bon baseball team, the 2011 version of the Raiders is ready for a fresh start — and even possibly an improvement. The Raiders won five games last year in the ever-tough Heart O’Lakes Confer-ence, but with the move to the Pine to Prairie Conference this year, LP-A will be facing schools more their size. “It’s a good move, but a competitive conference,” said LP-A head coach Brandon Ol-son. “I like how we do match up with the teams, though.” The fresh start will come in the lineup, with only three players really having seen varsity time last year. Freshman Mason Swegar-den will anchor the infield at shortstop, while being one of LP-A’s top two pitchers, along with junior Dylan Omvig. “We’ll need to get four good innings from both in each out-ing,” Olson said. “Mason is the closest thing we have to a strikeout pitcher. He has good command of his fastball and can place it anywhere. “Dylan has a good fastball, too, and he’s working on his curve more, as well.”

Junior Wyatt Wixo will be the Raider’s do-all players, since he can play almost all the posi-tions in the infield and will be one of the team’s top hitters. Junior Mike Hamre will be able to eat up some innings from the bullpen, along with sophomore Korey Mickelson. The Raiders have only one

senior out in Jon Nelson, who is a first-year player, but al-ready has shown he has a good bat. “He has a nice, smooth swing and can hit the ball well,” Olson said of Nelson. Omvig and sophomore Alex Tangen will platoon at third base, while Wixo and Swegar-

den will rotate at shortstop. Mickelson and Nelson will see time at second base, with sophomore Wes Jaster being the first baseman, after seeing time there last year. At catcher, Tangen and Om-vig will each see time. “We will have an inexpe-rienced outfield, with junior

Bryce Bartunek seeing some time in centerfield last year,” Olson added. Junior Dylan Larson and Hamre will also see time in the other outfield positions. “The big deal this year will be to play solid defense,” Ol-son said. “And as far as offen-sively, we’ll have to play some small ball.” With the new conference and new competitive outlook, the Raiders do have some higher expectations. “They want to build on last year and finish around the .500 mark,” Olson said. “We’ll take some baby steps and use this as a learning year, too.”

There will be some adjust-ments which will have to be made, but the Lake Park-Audubon softball team is look-ing to be better than a year ago, when they played to the Sub-Section 6-1A semifinals. The Raiders will be without their longtime starting pitch Christine McIntire and it’s also the first year for the 43-foot distance from mound to plate — an extra two feet from last year. But first-year LP-A head coach Tiffany Christiansen expects her pitchers to adjust to the new distance and their new roles as starting pitchers. Sophomore Maegan Ander-son and Tate Hall will each see time on the pitching mound, while pitching to the versatile senior Chelsey Raaen. “Bob Soukup (pitching coach) has done a great job with our pitchers, so they are throwing it hard and for strikes,” Christiansen said. “Chelsey Raaen is also our true leader behind the plate and can throw down to second base with anyone.” Eighth grader Laina Nel-son will take over at shortstop after a solid year in 2010 as a

seventh grader. Sophomore Carissa Raaen is also back at third base, with senior Larissa Gage returning at second base, to make an ex-

perienced infield. Eighth grader Jessie Swe-garden will also hold down the centerfield position. “We’ll have a good rotation

out in the outfield, as well,” Christiansen said. Last year, the Raiders slow-ly improved their batting, so by the end of the season, they

were peaking. In 2011, the LP-A coaches hope to see a quicker improve-ment in the batter’s box. “I think their improvement last year is carrying over a lot this season,” said assistant coach Tiffany Nagel. “Chelsey (Raaen), Cheyenne Nelson and Tate Hall will be our top hit-ters and we should see some power this year.” Avoiding the pitfalls or slumps during the season will also be key in the Raiders’ suc-cess. “We need to be consistent and the girls need to know what’s going on in the field and communicating,” Chris-tiansen added.

More numbers, mean better depth for LP-A

Raider boy tracksters will learn on the go

BY BRIAN [email protected]

There’s been some good depth added in the lineup of the Lake Park-Audubon girls’ track and field team, which could lead to more team points in meets. “We have a good distance crew depth-wise, but we do have many new kids out for the sport,” said LP-A head coach Coral Lunde. “We’ll need to get a couple of meets under us first.” Junior Rachel Carlson will be one to watch in the sprints after having good seasons the last three years. Freshman Rebecca Scherm-er qualified for sections in the high jump and was part of the 4x800 relay team, while fresh-man Ashlyn Strom was a sec-tional runner in the 3,200. “They are doing well and coming into the season in shape,” Lunde said. “If things go well for Rachel (Carlson), she has a shot to go far there.” In the distance races, fresh-

man Breann Hogie (800 run) and sophomore Brittany Ris-lund (400 and relays) will add depth. Sophomore Samantha An-glin will join Carlson in the sprints, after being out last year with a knee injury. The Raiders won’t start their meets until April 21, in Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton due to a school-based trip planned to Florida.

The Lake Park-Audubon boys’ track and field team will be picking up their experience as they go this spring sea-son. The Raiders will have a delayed start to their season, after a school-based trip to Florida puts back their first meet of the season to April 21. With very little experience on the team, the Raiders may take a little while to get acclimated to each of their events. “We’ll be inexperienced and we won’t be gaining much until after our first couple of meets,” said LP-A head coach Coral Lunde. “We do have some good leadership from our seniors and the numbers are up (in participation), so that is good.” Raider returners seniors Derek Braseth and Jon Nelson will be looked upon as the team’s main point-getters. Nelson was a section placewinner last year in the high jump and is look-ing to break the 6-0 mark this season. Junior Chase Zeller was a section qualifier in discus and is looking to increase his distance in his throws, while junior Jordan Lange brings plenty of strength to the event, but needs to work on technique. Sophomore Mat Pepper will look to be a sprinter, as well. The Raiders have 15 out and it will be a work in progress as the season moves on. LP-A will open the season in the Dil-worth-Glyndon-Felton meet April 21.
