Spring Ridge Review
Spring Ridge Elementary
Elkhorn Public Schools
Elkhorn, Nebraska
A Message from Mrs. Petersen
Dear Spring Ridge Families!
In this season of gift giving, please accept our sincere ap-
preciation for the gift of support you have shown Spring
Ridge students and staff. We value your volunteerism with
classroom and special projects, your attendance at school
functions, your support for the PTO fundraisers, your pres-
ence when dropping off and picking up your children, the
confidence you place in our teachers and the importance
you see in the education of our children. Thank you for
these gifts to us!
Please know that our focus for teaching and learning re-
mains the same even during this busy month. We continue
to focus on building reading skills through fluency, compre-
hension, and vocabulary building. Reserving a few
minutes of pleasure reading as part of your child’s nightly
routine at home may be just the right amount of structure
your child looks for during this busy time.
On behalf of the Spring Ridge staff, I would like to extend
my best wishes to you and your family for a happy,
healthy, and safe holiday season. Enjoy this special time of
the year with your family and friends.

Lost & Found
Lost & Found tables are just inside the front door of the school. Please
check these tables when you are able to. It is helpful if you put your
child’s name in coats, hats, mittens, scarves, etc. We can easily return
items to your child, if there is a name on the tag! All unclaimed lost
and found items will be given to Goodwill over Winter Break.
Safety Patrol
Safety patrol students will be at their posts throughout the winter months ex-
cept during extreme weather. We always appreciate their leadership and as-
sistance but especially during this time of year. Please thank these school
leaders when you see them!

It’s Mitten Tree Time!
The Spring Ridge Mitten Tree needs your help! It’s loaded with mittens, listing a gift wish/
request for kids and families in our Elkhorn community that have been identified as needing
some extra help this time of year.
If you can help, here is what you need to do:
1. Select a mitten with an item(s) that you are comfortable purchasing from the mitten tree
in the Spring Ridge office.
(An adult must come with students to select a mitten.)
2. Record the mitten(s) you have taken in the Celebration of Giving Notebook and leave
your contact information.
3. Purchase the item(s).
4. Gift wrap the item(s).
5. Firmly secure the mitten(s) to the outside of the wrapped item. This is the only way we
know what is inside of the gift and who the gift belongs to.
6. Return the wrapped item(s) to Spring Ridge, no later than Wednesday, December 14th.
You may select a mitten(s), before and after school from:
Thursday, December 1 – Wednesday December 14, 2016
Thank you so much for participating! If you have any questions please e-mail:

A COLD OR THE FLU ?
What’s the difference between a cold and the flu? Cold symptoms include nasal conges-
tion; a runny, red and tender nose; scratchy or sore throat; lack of appetite; and a low
grade fever. The flu (short for influenza) is more severe, with many of the cold symptoms,
but usually a higher temperature, chills, a cough, and muscle aches. Anyone with these
symptoms needs to stay home to recover and prevent infecting others. A cold usually lasts
about 7 days, while recuperation from the flu can take several weeks.
The best prevention is frequent handwashing. In addition, use disposable tissues, avoid
people who are sick and keep hands away from the mouth and nose. After recovery, re-
placing or sterilizing your toothbrush is a good idea.
The recommended treatment is lots of rest, liquid and T.L.C. Antibiotics don’t help because
colds and flu are caused by viruses, not bacteria. Over-the-counter medications may help
relieve symptoms of congestion and fever. A sore throat can be relieved by gargling with
½ tsp of salt in 8 ounces of warm water. Decongestants reduce nasal congestion and ear
fullness. Nasal sprays shouldn’t be used for more than three days or a rebound effect will
actually worsen the congestion. Antihistamines will decrease a runny nose, but can cause
drowsiness or excitability. Cough suppressants are only good when the cold is clearing up,
otherwise an expectorant will help thin and clear the sputum from the throat and chest. A
vaporizer in the room will help then secretions and relieve hoarseness. Your grandmother
was right—chicken soup helps loosen secretions too!
Check with your health care provider to make sure your child’s symptoms aren’t a sign of
something more serious if he has a temperature greater than 101 degrees or the fever per-
sists; a very sore or red throat; prolonged cough, wheezing or labored breathing; bell/green
colored nasal drainage; ear or sinus pain; or when symptoms are prolonged and /or not im-
proving.
Your child will recover more quickly and comfortably at home with rest, than at school.
Thank you for helping us promote a healthy school environment.
