On Friday 6th March local women from across Doncaster and South

Yorkshire participated in Doncaster Community Organisers International

Women’s Day event at the Quaker Meeting House on St. James’ Street.

There were a number of speakers at the event discussing issues affect-

ing women nationally and internationally including, the sexualisation of

women in the media, the underrepresentation of women in public roles,

the need to increase women in business and the difficulties facing ethnic

women in modern Britain.

Campaign groups, such as Amnesty International Sheffield, 50:50 Parlia-

ment and No More Page Three York, along with the Mayor of Doncaster,

Ros Jones, who opened the event and the MP for Doncaster Central,

Rosie Winterton, who participated in the closing Q & A session, empow-

ered local women to ensure their voices are heard in issues (local or

global) affecting women. There were also workshops throughout the day

on community arts, building women in business and promoting communi-

ty cohesion. For more pictures of IWD event, please visit our website.

ENGAGING YOUTH

Along with the Children’s Gallery, Doncaster Community Organisers have

been visiting schools, youth clubs and youth organisations to engage chil-

dren and young people with the community through the use of artwork

and activities. Children and young people are often left out of the decision

-process and therefore as a result, funding for the young are often cut by

local authorities to save money or to use for other local services. Our work

with children and young people hopes to build better communication links

between youth and local authorities.

The artwork and photos from the activities with youth will appear at the

Children’s Gallery on Thursday 2nd April between 4 PM and 6 PM at the

Quaker Meeting House on St James’ Street. For more information, please

refer to the front page of the newsletter.

Want to learn a new

language? Make new

friends? Or experience

different cultures?

Join our weekly workshops

at the Doncaster Central

Learning Centre (DCLC) on

Bennetthorpe every Tues-

day from 30th March

(except 7th April) between

11 AM and 2 PM, where

volunteers from a variety of

nationalities will share their

cultural heritage with the

community! For more infor-

mation, please contact Ma-

yan on 07718618779.

Film-making?

Keen local actors,
