President’s MessageJeannette Peña Hall, D.D.S.

Passing on the GavelThis year has been quite a whirlwind, to say the least. I thank you and

our dental association for the opportunity to serve as president of the

SFDDA, as Alternate Trustee to the FDA, as Alternate Delegate to the

ADA, as Board Liaison to the FDAʼs Council on Communications, and

as a member of the Miami Winter Meeting Committee.

This was my year to give back. However, none of these roles seemed

as rewarding as that of participating alongside my fellow members at

the recent Mission of Mercy (MOM) event in Tampa, organized through

the FDA. Our editor, Dr. Richard Mufson, has so beautifully summa-

rized the event, and I truly agree that it was a momentous occasion when

some of our members not only helped the public, but also came together

in an unprecedented showing of effort and camaraderie.

As I pass the gavel on to Dr. Marcos Diaz, whom I have come to know

through the leadership process, I can only tell you that my presidency

will soon be overshadowed, as Dr. Diaz will take on this position with

much experience, dedication and determination.

My reflections on the past year bring me a feeling of satisfaction in

knowing that I have done my part and that I have learned a great deal

personally and professionally. Although life takes many turns and it

may pull us in many different directions, it is the bonds of many friend-

ships within the dental association and the dental profession that keeps

one committed.

As I look ahead to the future of the dental association, I see great

changes that are inevitable and that are expected with progress and

growth. If we are to survive the strain on organized dentistry produced

by social media and online education, we will all have to realize that,

as individual dentists, we may feel powerful and apt in making changes

in our office, but it is only as a coalition that we can impact and protect

the dental profession.

I would like to share with you my main concern facing our profession.

I feel that the increasing costs of education and the shift toward lower

reimbursement, with the expansion of dental health therapists, is a cycle

which can only result in making dentistry more of a trade and less of a

profession. How will the most qualified individuals be attracted to

healthcare in this financial scenario? Shorter educational programs and

a shift away from private practices also would seem unavoidable.

Before I go, I will ask you to personally reflect on what concerns or

fears you may have with regard to your future as a dentist. If you cannot

think of any, then get your head out of the sand and get involved. If you

were able to list any concerns, then it is time to start thinking of how

you could get involved “to be the change you wish to see.”

“A bend in the road is not the

end of the road... unless you

fail to make the turn.”

Rich’s Ramblings Richard A. Mufson, D.D.S., Editor

FDA Mission of Mercy (MOM) – Tampa, Florida,March 28-29, 2014

“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”– Winston Churchill

By the time you are reading this, you will have missed (unless you were

one of a number of participants from the South Florida area) one of the

most amazing events I have ever witnessed or been a part of.

On Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29, the Florida Dental Asso-

ciation hosted the first Mission of Mercy (MOM) event in Florida, in

which several hundred dental professionals (dentists, hygienists, assis-

tants), students (dental, hygiene and assisting), dental office staff, lab

technicians, physicians, EMT’s and many other general volunteers from

all over the state - joined forces on the Florida State Fairgrounds in

Tampa and provided approximately 8,000 dental procedures, with an

estimated value of over 1.1 million dollars, to 1,660 people, and many

or most of whom would not have otherwise been able to receive such

care.

Our FDA president and Tampa dentist, Dr. Terry Buckenheimer, had

heard about similar Mission of Mercy events in other states – made

possible by charitable donations through America’s Dentist Care Foun-

dation, which began in the state of Virginia in 2000 – and decided to or-

ganize this first-ever event in Florida.

Following a blitz of media coverage about the upcoming two-day event,

long lines of cars stretching several miles were backed up onto Martin

Luther King Boulevard leading into the Fairgrounds entrance even

before the gates opened around 4:30 AM. Many of the dental volunteers

arrived around the same time, and others as early as 5:00 AM for a

volunteer breakfast and orientation by section leaders.

Helicopters were seen hovering over the Fairgrounds shooting camera

footage of the long lines of cars, and of patients in line waiting to gain

entrance into the pavilion. The video clips would later appear on multi-

ple local TV news stations in the Tampa area.

There were no preliminary screenings or other requirements for patients

seeking entry into the event – other than willingness to simply “show

up,” and receive care on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Upon stepping into the 40,000 square foot Special Events Pavilion, one

could not help but feel awestruck by the level of organization and effort

– not to mention a significant amount of donated monetary funds (to

the tune of about $200,000, as I was told by event organizers) – which

went into the this monumental effort with a common theme: giving back

to others in need.

The room was divided into quite a number of sections – patient regis-

tration, patient education, medical triage, radiology, dental triage, patient

routing, dental lab/ prosthodontics, sterilization, central supply, restora-

tive dentistry, hygiene, endodontics, pediatrics, oral surgery, patient exit,

and volunteer registration/ hospitality – all set up with a designed pur-

pose of analyzing, organizing, planning and then routing patients, and

in some cases, entire families, to the most appropriate other sections for

their required dental care.

A row of digital panoramic units and printers were on hand to obtain

diagnostic screening radiographs for each and every patient who would

then proceed through the other triage sections for examination and treat-

ment planning. Not all dental conditions were treated, but rather, indi-

vidual patient needs were categorized and identified within each chart

by priority.

The medical triage section, staffed by dentists and physicians, evaluated

the medical history and physical status of all patients. A very small num-

ber of patients were turned away if their respective medical history or

conditions were felt to preclude the delivery of safe dental care.

A separate section of paramedics/EMT’s was set up for medical evalu-

ation and treatment, with an ambulance also stationed outside the build-

ing, as needed for any would–be emergency situations.

As a participant within the oral surgery section for the better part of the

two days, I was amazed by the two and a half long rows of some thirty

plus chairs, continuously filled and operating to capacity for treatment

- which ranged from removal of one or two teeth to full mouth extrac-

tions, or other procedures such as removal of bony exostoses for a den-

ture. The workload and amount of care delivered was both intensive and

impressive.

Although many oral surgeon specialists (OMS) were on hand, the sec-

tion was by no means limited to OMS. Several periodontists contributed,

in addition to general dentists, and even one endodontist – our district

president, Jeannette Pena-Hall, who I was pleasantly surprised to see in

action also removing one or more teeth! Other locals from our area,

including Derek Haber, as well as our immediate past president, Beatrice

Terry and her husband Edy Guerra, were also seen lending a hand with

their respective oral surgery skills. Our incoming SFDDA president,

Marcos Diaz, pitched in with literally a non-stop and multifaceted effort

of not only surgery, but also running in all directions to help others who

may have needed instruments or a given type of handpiece, over the en-

tirety of the two days.

I was also greatly surprised to look up at one point and see that we were

also working along side a state legislator - our one and only dentist on

Capitol Hill, Senator Alan Hayes from Umatilla, Florida.

Our leader, organizer and main facilitator for the oral surgery section

was Palm Harbor OMS, Dr. Michael Pikos, who began each day with

orientations at 5:30 AM, and seemed to work non-

stop to ensure all chairs were filled with patients,

all available surgeons had assistants, and the many

needed extractions and other ancillary procedures

were performed in continuous motion, somewhat

analogous to a freight train. He was also in charge

of writing and handing out all postoperative pre-

scriptions for medications.

A section was set up exclusively for administra-

tion of local anesthesia for patients prior to arrival

in the other treatment sections. However, this con-

cept was largely discontinued by the second day

due to some limitations and challenges in patients

obtaining sufficient blocks and/or levels of anes-

thesia. This responsibility was then turned over to

the primary treating dentists in each section.

A very large sterilization section was also operat-

ing in full force, non-stop, staffed largely by a rel-

atively sizeable contingent of dental students from

the University of Florida.

Another group of students from Nova Southeast-

ern were at work in the restorative section – some

of whom were also performing dental extractions,

if needed (all under supervision of course), even

an occasional “full mouth extraction,” and to my

surprise, surgical procedures which seemed as

much or more challenging than what I was doing

over in the surgical section! I had the pleasure of

meeting other very nice students from the newest

dental school in Florida, LECOM School of Den-

tal Medicine in Bradenton, who also helped the

effort by assisting in the surgery section and else-

where.

Another unexpected surprise, for me, was discov-

ering a large section devoted to dental laboratory

procedures, staffed and stocked with a number of

well qualified lab technicians, lab equipment and

dentists – including the likes of our own FDA 1st

Vice President and Speaker of the House, Drs.

Ralph Attanasi and Ethan Pansik, both prostho-

dontic specialists. Dentists and lab personnel in

this section were also charged with, among other

tasks, helping to provide impressions and fabri-

cating of replacement appliances for patients who

underwent recent or previous extraction of teeth.

Numerous other tables and stations were set up

for volunteer registration, patient registration, and

after treatment was performed, a patient “check

out” area. Post-operative instructions were given,

along with brochures and other helpful informa-

tion regarding alternate avenues to receive ongo-

ing or future charitable dental care within the

community. Patients were also asked to submit

comments and feedback regarding the care they

received, and many contributed hand-written

notes expressing their gratitude and other wonder-

ful comments, which were then posted on a large

bulletin board for all to read.

Numerous volunteers with blue shirts, “ambas-

sadors,” were seen throughout the building, per-

forming many functions ranging from escorting

patients in all directions to connecting assistants

with treating doctors, translation, and others.

A good number of dentists from the South Florida

area were also on hand, including our FDA Sec-

retary, Michael Eggnatz, who showed up with an

entourage of his staff and family, and who appar-

ently employed a “divide and conquer” theme.

Hygienist, Ayli Garcia, performed gross debride-

ments for the 2 days, assistant, Nora Wallace

worked chairside in oral surgery, while front desk

and assistant, Laura Santiago and Aileen Salva,

were ambassadors/translators. Dr. Eggnatz was a

captain of the operative ambassadors, and wife,

Marion and daughter/front desk, Kristina, were

ambassadors, escorting patients to and from doc-

tors for treatment.

Our SFDDA and FDA past president, Cesar

Sabates, was also in the house, as well as our dis-

trict treasurer, Rodrigo Romano, pediatric dentist,

Richard Sherman, Hollywood dentist, Richard

Topolski, Miami dentist, Robert Goral, and

Weston dentists, Lee Friedel and Elise Bolski,

who also brought their staff.

I apologize for omitting the names of any other

dentists from our district who may have attended,

as well as dental students, or the many devoted

hygienists, assistants, and volunteers, as I was per-

sonally not able to obtain additional information

to recognize all who were there. However, I

would like to personally thank all of you who

traveled to Tampa and gave of your time and

skills.

I am certain that everyone on hand, volunteers and

patients alike, could share their own stories on

what this event personally meant in their respec-

tively minds and hearts. Many hugs and, in many

cases, tears were shared by not only those so

grateful for having been on the receiving end of

the generous outpouring of time and care given,

but also by many on the giving end as well.

I would like to also share two personal “firsts”

which I experienced as part of the Florida MOM

event. For one - this marked the first time in my

life I have ever administered local anesthetic and

removed a tooth on someone as early as 6:00 AM

(including my days while in residency training)!

Second, but no less interesting for me, was the re-

alization that I have worked alongside many FDA

member colleagues year after year at House of

Delegates meetings, Specialty Forums, FNDC

and other venues. However, this was the first time

I have worked alongside the same people in the

same room while actually performing clinical

dentistry!

The net result after the two days of this immense culmination of hard

work – was a very thankful Tampa Bay community.

Stories of the event were abound on TV and radio airwaves, featuring pa-

tient interviews – and including one in which a father of six children

shared a deep sense of gratitude for having been able to receive care for

himself and his entire family.

Tremendous gratitude and praise was expressed for the FDA and the Mis-

sion of Mercy for having organized and brought this event to the Tampa

area. Talk of bringing this event to other Florida communities could also

be heard in the air during the two-day affair, such as – perhaps even

Miami? Who knows? Stay tuned.
