Adult Easter Egg Hunt

You know you want to go! We all love hunting for Easter Eggs and I get very jeal-ous of the kids out there every Easter. The third annual Adult Easter Egg Hunt is happening at Hopkins Harvest on Good Friday. It is a great event. Hundreds of eggs are filled with great prizes, mostly donated by local businesses. The event is a fundraiser for GALS.

Riddliculous

Does age matter with money? Which is more valuable, an old ten dollar bill or a new one? See page 9.

Edgewater Legion Sundays

Sundays are great days at the Edgewater Legion. They offer a light lunch ($5) all day with the doors opening at noon. Cribbage begins at 1 pm with other games also going on. Meat draws are at 4 pm and they are now serving draft on tap. There is also an all day munchie menu. Everyone is welcome to stop in at the Edgewater Legion.

Hospice Butterfly Gala

The 7th Annual Hospice Butterfly Gala is happening on Saturday, April 27. This year’s event will be at Eagle Ranch Resort and includes live entertainment, dinner, silent and live auctions as well as a des-sert auction. The Hospice Society of the Columbia Val-ley provides much-needed services here in the valley. We all face grief in our lives and these folks are there to help us under-stand. The volunteers are there for us in many ways. Check the ad on page 10 for more details.

Youth Open Mic

It’s the second-to-last Fresh Fridays even-ing on April 5: invite a friend and go check out our valley’s young musicians as they take their turns on stage. Admission is free and it’s always an inspiring night of aston-ishing voices and musical talent. For some of the performers, it’s their first time on stage, so cheer loudly and keep those hands clapping. Doors open at 7 pm, with performances from 7:30 to 10 pm. High fives to Oso Sim-ple for mentoring our kids and making these shows happen.

Robservations

We certainly live in a beautiful, peaceful community. It takes a bit of effort to go out there and have a conflict. It is so much easier to just be kind and loving. I am in a pretty grateful state these days. Having felt near to mortality definitely changes things, even an evening walk. It was so quiet out there this evening that I could hear owls, coyotes, Toby Creek and more. My own footsteps sounded like can-nons in the night. Watson loves those walks. With my gratitude comes a lot of emotion. I cry a lot. Sometimes with sadness as I contemplate living with cancer and kidney failure. But often it is when thinking about all the incredible acts of kindness towards me through this journey. I get overwhelmed knowing that people have thought of me, prayed for me and given so much love to me. It makes a huge difference as I am a bit far from family. My family has been amazing as well. Anyways, thanks to everyone who has been so wonderful. It changes my life. Every day. Always remember that you change anyone’s life any time with an act of kindness.

Safety Always

I never run with scissors. (Those last two words are completely un-necessary).

Kids’ Lego Club

A free, fun program for kids ages 5 to 10 and their adult caregivers is about to start up at the Radium Library. Block Builders runs every Tuesday, April 9 to May 21. Kids will do fun activities with Lego crea-tions, and get an afterschool snack as well. Call 347-2434 to register.

Bike & Gear Swap

It’s the bicycle event of the year: the Co-lumbia Valley Cycling Society’s annual Bike & Gear Swap. Drop off your used bike stuff at the CV Centre this Saturday, April 6, from 9 to 11 am, then head back in for the sale at 11:30 am. Experts will be on hand to help you find the right ride and equipment. There will also be local bike shops with some clearance inventory, plus displays from local vendors and organizations. This is a great way to pick up bikes for those growing kids, and the right bike for your own summer adventures.

Watson’s Waddle

So Rob has this new machine in the spare room. He hooks up to it and it cleans his blood with it. As a dog, I am not a big fan of this. There are so many strange sounds from little pumps and different buzzers and alarms. It is not very comforting for me. But being near Rob is comforting for me and I believe that I comfort him with my presence. He has set a dog bed in the room for me but he is stuck up in a big chair and cannot really reach me very eas-ily. He does have a stash of treats that he can toss to me once in a while. I do my best to hang with him because I know it is what he wants but during some of the alarms I just have to leave. I am so thankful for Jen of Kootenay Krit-ters. She shows up on dialysis days and takes me away for an hour or two. It sucks for Rob to be left alone but it is great for me to get out for a nice walk and a trip to the bathroom. I do look forward to when Rob gets off the machine as he is always overcome with guilt towards me and takes me for a walk right away. I really have it going on these days.

What Year Was It?

Pakistan became the first Islamic Republic, the Summer Olympics were in Australia and the Winter Olympics were in Italy. Pele joined a Brazilian pro soccer team at the age of 16, Elvis released ‘Heartbreak Ho-tel’ as his first number 1 hit in the States and ‘As the World Turns’ debuted as did Bob Barker on ‘Truth or Consequences’. What year was it? See page 10.

Tech-Smart Kids

These days, technology is a part of life even for young kids. A free, four-week CBAL program starts up on April 9 to teach parents how to use technology for kids six and younger in a safe and meaningful way. Healthy Tech Tots meets at the Invermere Library from 10 am to noon. Register for the program by calling 342-6416.

Kidney Failure

I don’t have a lot of new information in the kidney failure field. Mine have failed and are showing no sign of returning any func-tion. I am very lucky that water still flows through them to my bladder so I am able to consume liquids. Many folks in kidney failure do not release any liquids. That really restricts the fluids that they can consume. If they drink a glass of water (or eat a grape) the fluid ends up accumulating in their bodies. Of-ten this shows by swelling in the ankles and wrists. Their dialysis involves removing fluid and toxins from their blood and often causes lots of cramping, similar to charley horses. For me, I can drink lots of water, and I should. I just have to clear things like urea, creatinine, sodium, potassium and phos-phorous. Some of the nutrients that are good for you folks are very toxic for me as they do not get processed in my body. Fortunately with the home hemodialysis working well, I can clear a lot of the toxins with a machine and can eat a bit more freely.

Gym Intentions

I can’t believe I forgot to go to the gym today. That’s seven years in a row now.

Classes start on April 10 and run every Wednesday morning from 10 am to noon at the Invermere Library. Spaces are lim-ited so sign up today by calling Leanne at 341-5683.

My Progress

Things have really turned around for me in the world of kidney failure. Three months ago I was in rough shape, getting weaker and weaker as toxins remained in my body. I was not doing a very good job of cleaning out my body. Now that home hemodialysis is in place, my body is pulling it together nicely. I am doing a much better job of clearing the toxins. I feel so much stronger and better. I am also feeling very accomplished. I have done about a dozen runs on the ma-chine and they seem to be going a bit smoother each time. Last night I tried an evening run for the first time and it was great. Being able to schedule dialysis around my life is a huge change from scheduling my life around dialysis. Plus doing lots of dialy-sis has me able to walk up stairs and hills that I could not even consider last year.

Schoolyard Memories

I had a bully as a kid. He was dyslexic and used to stick “Me Kick” signs on my back. Then everyone thought I was the bully -- with bad grammar and the courtesy to give a heads up.

ICAN Garage Sale Donations

This spring you can show your love for animals (and your support for ICAN) by donating to their upcoming June 22 and 23 garage sale fundraiser. ICAN has been rescuing, sheltering, spay-ing, neuturing and re-homing companion animals in the valley since 2007. Phone Teryl at 341-7888 to arrange drop-off of your donations.

Karaoke Night

Head to the Horsethief Creek Pub to sing in spring at their weekly karaoke night on Thursdays. This is always a fun night of entertainment, when the diamonds in the crowd get their chance to shine. The microphone goes live at 9 pm, and there’s a shuttle to get you home at the end of the night

Kids’ Art Show

Students from our local elementary schools have been working hard on their submissions to the Art from the Heart show. Head to Pynelogs from April 2 to 27 to check out their artwork and support our next generation of sculptors, painters and other mixed media artists.

Side Effects

Not much to report on the cancer front. My next bloodwork there will be in June. Hopefully things will still be under control at that time. As for my overall health, things are really picking up. My body is really enjoying the increase in dialysis and is beginning to heal and regain strength from the effects of the chemotherapy. I am getting out a lot more and anyone who bumps into me tells me how good I look. I have been hearing that for a year but now I actually believe it. My colour has returned and I can feel my own energy growing. I used to get tired just having a conversa-tion but now I can feel my personality com-ing back and it feels great. I am so grateful for all of the positive comments and all of the help that I am receiving. That does make me feel that the efforts to get healthi-er are worth it. I must admit that being fairly open about my personal health issues has definitely opened the hearts of many people. Never be afraid to share what you have going on.

Kids’ Baseball Fun Day

If you have a 4 to 17-year-old in your life who loves baseball (or who might love playing baseball), this free event is for them: Saturday, April 6 is Little League Fun Day. Kids will try the basic skills of baseball and enjoy a hot dog BBQ. Register by calling Kayla at 688-0058 with your kid’s name and age, then head to the Lion’s ballpark by the crossroads for 11 am. It’s time to dust off those gloves.

Riddliculous Answer

(From page 2) An old ten dollar bill is worth ten times more than a new one dollar bill.

Trivia Night Finale

This is it: the final night of trivia at the Sta-tion Pub, on Wednesday, April 10. In addi-tion to the usual fantastic prizes there will be the grand prize we’ve all been day-dreaming about: $5,000 from Westjet! Come by yourself or as a team (maximum 6 players). It’s $3 per person. The fun starts at 7 pm, but go early to claim a table and fuel up for the fun night.

Last Call

I got another letter from the utility compa-ny. It said: “Final Notice.” I’m glad they won’t be bothering me anymore.

Live Swing/Waltz/Big Band Music

Tickets are now available for the music-lovers’ event of the year: the 36th annual Big Band Dance. If you love listening or dancing to swing music, jazzy horns and that big band sound, this is the best party for you. Tickets for the Saturday, April 13 event are available for $25 at Lambert Kipp Pharma-cy and Home Hardware. The night starts at 7:30 pm at the CV Centre and includes a late-night buffet to keep you energized. It’s a great night and you will not be disap-pointed.

Good Food Co-op

Get signed up for this month’s Good Food Co-op by next Wednesday, April 11 and your food will show up on the third Wednesday of the month, April 18. This is a great program for fresh produce that is available to anyone in the valley. You pay $6 and you receive a mixed pack-age of produce. The money is pooled to buy bulk so the budget is stretched by working as a team. Register at the Family Resource Centre, 250-342-5566.

Drum Circle

Patrick has returned with his Drum Circle program running Monday evenings at 7 pm at Pynelogs Cultural Centre. It is a very invigorating yet soothing and healing expe-rience. Cost is $10 for youths (10-17) and for folks with a drum. $15 if you need a drum. Eve-ryone is welcome. Call 409-4110 for more information.

It Was That Year

(From page 4) 1956 was a great year. Te-fal invented non-stick frying pans, Bo Derek was born, the first commercial video recorder was sold. IBM invented the hard disk and the worldwide rock and roll craze began. A new house was worth $11,700, a car $2,050 and the average annual income was $4,450.

The Thrifty Reporter

I am in Lacombe, Alberta visiting my par-ents at the time of writing this column. Each time I come for a visit I also take the time to shop at their two local thrift stores. Don’t get me wrong, they are nice thrift stores but they never seem to be quite as nice as the one in Invermere. We are very lucky in Invermere to have such a wonderful store where many visi-tors make a point to stop in and shop. Thanks to all the people who drop off clean slightly used donations and to the many wonderful volunteers who sort and stock the shelves.

Tesla Trouble

I hope Elon Musk never gets into a scan-dal, because ElonGate would be really drawn out.

Women’s Spa Day

Pleiades is hosting a special Women’s Spa Day on Sunday, April 7. The day includes access to the spa’s hot tub and aromather-apy steam room, yoga, meditation, jour-naling, and discounts on spa treatments, all for $125. Contact the spa to register in advance for the 9 am to 3 pm event. Spring cleaning isn’t just for closets: some-times we need to dust cobwebs off our-selves.

Spring Cleaning

This is a good time of year to have your furnace and ducts cleaned. Aquair is here to help you with that. They also install and service Reverse Osmosis water and sof-tener systems.

Great Golf Deal

Windermere Valley Golf Course is a great place to be for the month of April (anytime actually). Green fees are only $29.95 for 18 holes anytime this month. Anytime. The course is in good condition, the kitch-en is serving up great vittles and the staff are ready to help you in any way they can. It is a wonderful place to spend a sunny day. 250-342-3004.

Radium Visitor Centre

Go for a lunch or dinner date at the Horsethief Creek Pub on Sunday, April 7, and you’ll be supporting the Radium Visitor Centre. The Centre is the lucky recipient of the pub’s weekly Give Back Sunday pro-gram, and will get 15% of the day’s food sales. The Radium Visitor Center helps visitors find what they need in our valley 362 days a year. You can show your support by or-dering dessert too.

Where I Was

The photo on page 6 is a familiar site if you travel south from here. You will see it on the highway in Canal Flats (have a look when you check out the vintage auction this Saturday).

Block Builders

CBAL and Radium Public Library are offer-ing an 8-week program for kids. It runs after school, 3:30-5:30 pm every Tuesday from April 9 to May 21 at the library. Call the library to register at 347-3424.

Coys Par 3 Golf

Coys Par 3 Golf Course open and awe-some. Things are in great early-season shape. Coys is an incredibly fun, yet chal-lenging par 3 course. It has some very unique features making it a pleasure to play. The kitchen will be open this coming week-end, hopefully Friday, April 5. The food is always delicious in the clubhouse. Call Coys at 250-345-6504.

Just a Suggestion

Gambling addiction hotlines might get a lot more gamblers ringing in if every tenth caller was a winner.

It’s All In the Wording

The other day I was reading an interesting little article about being in a wheelchair. This gentleman was often asked how he felt about being ‘confined’ to a wheelchair.

He really changed people’s thought pro-cesses when he stated that actually, he was ‘liberated’ by the chair. Without it he would be stuck in his bedroom, house, etc. He has the right attitude. I phase in and out of good attitudes. Is home hemo confining or liberating? A bit of both for sure.

Vitamin D-ficiency

Sunshine is good for us. Very good. When it reaches our skin we produce vitamin D, a much needed nutrient in our bodies. Living as far from the equator as we do, Canadians only get enough daylight for half of the year. It affects our gardens and our bodies. Increase your health, lower your depres-sion and get out into the sun whenever you can.

Take Care

Of yourselves folks. I wish I had done a lot of things differently but it is too late now. Just get out for a quick daily walk.
