From the Principal Dear Parents/Guardians, Curriculum Day – Wednesday 17th November A reminder that next Wednesday 17th November is a Curriculum Day – pupil free. Teachers are using this day to work on producing Semester 2 Reports and Learning Tasks. 2022 Prep Information Evening Thank you to the parents that attended the Parent Information Night, via WebEx, for Prep children beginning school at Spring Gully PS in 2022. We were delighted to host about 40 families. The aim of the evening was to provide information to parents that will assist in making their child's transition into school life as smooth as possible. Our Prep Transition Coordinator, Miss Vernon, recently emailed details relating to the upcoming transition visits. Our Prep team for 2022 will be Miss Madie Floyd, Miss Maddy Vernon and Mr Corey Greer. We hope to be able to announce the placement of all staff by late November or early December. 2022 Placement Requests Throughout November, we will continue to work on our class structures and student combinations for next year. In the past we have worked to ensure friendship groups remain together in some capacity, however it is equally important to recognise the need to establish productive environments that support learning, as well as maintaining or building new friendship groups. If there are any concerns about friendship placements for students in 2022, please let me know in writing or via email [email protected] by Friday, 12th November. No late requests will be considered. Please note that it is not possible for parents to request specific teachers as it would be impossible to accommodate all requests. Our process is to develop matched classroom groups based on social and educational needs, and then we match teachers to each class. In this way all classes are developed equally. Remembrance Day Every year at 11am on 11 November—the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month—we pause to remember those men and women who have died or suffered in all wars, conflicts and peace operations. Once again, our students and staff observed a one-minute silence today to mark this important day. “Lest We Forget” RSL Poppy Appeal We are pleased to be able to assist the RSL with the selling of poppies. We have on sale, pin poppies $1, pin poppies on card for $2, $5 or $10 each, wristbands for $3 each and pens for $5 each. Items can be purchased from the office. Tutoring Program The Victorian Government recently announced that the tutoring program would continue in 2022. This program is designed to support students whose learning has been disrupted because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

This support is likely to include students at all ability and achievement levels. The challenges of remote learning have not only impacted students who struggle with learning. There are students across the full distribution of learning attainment who will not have made the progress they would have made if we had been able to proceed with a normal school year. The primary means of identification will be teacher judgement using existing classroom-based observation and assessments. The identification of students will take place over the next few weeks. Online Safety As we fully settle back into face-to-face learning, we have once again noticed that many of our students have significantly improved their ICT skills and have become more comfortable with various technologies. This is generally a positive to come out of remote learning. However, a possible downside for some of our children is that this increased confidence and knowledge may lead them towards some negative, or potentially dangerous situations. Checking the age rating on the game, app, film or social network is a great guide as to whether they’re suitable for your child. The minimum age limit is 13 for several social networking sites. There are many educational games that students can access at any age, however, it is important that parents regulate their use. This will ensure children are getting the necessary hours of sleep to ensure they are ready for school each and every day. Navigating ICT can be a minefield when it comes to young children and it can be difficult to strike the right balance. As parents, we can arm ourselves with knowledge and support our kids to be responsible and knowledgeable users of technology. The site below is awesome and has lots of great advice. I would encourage you set aside some time to check it out. It might save you from experiencing unnecessary problems in the future. https://sites.google.com/aetinet.org/lea-forest-primary-academy/pupils/e-safety

From the Assistant Principal Lunch Orders in Week 8 There will be no lunch orders available on Thursday 25th November (Week 8) due to so many students being out of the school on excursions on this day. Fathers’ & Special Friends Day Thanks to Mrs Leed and Parent Club, students have had the opportunity to resume work on their gift which had originally been planned to go home prior to Fathers’ Day, however this was interrupted due to the lockdown. Please pay for your child’s gift via the Canteen module in Compass. Payment closes and gifts will be sent home tomorrow. Camp Kookaburra I was very lucky to be able to participate in the Grade 4 Camp Kookaburra trip last week. The students who attended were simply outstanding! They represented our school brilliantly and I was so proud to see how positively they supported each other. Special thanks to Michelle Maher and Jess Egan for accompanying us as parent helpers. Also to Sophie, Sue, Mr Crawford and Mrs Murphy for all of their work and efforts. Camps and Excursions Summary I’d like to acknowledge our teachers and Sonia for all of the work that has gone into re-organising the camps and excursions this term. We would never usually have so many on at the same time. In most cases, these events have been organised within much shorter timelines than they usually would be. Organising camps and excursions requires lots of time and numerous elements to consider and plan for. Another example of how awesome our staff at SGPS are!

This week for Respectful Relationships we talked about different roles people might take in a relationship and how these can feel. Students defined the words “dominant” and “submissive”. We played a couple of games to role-play the feeling of being in control of another person and being controlled by another person. “It was kind of difficult to copy someone else without being in charge of yourself. I’d rather be in control.” Frankie. “It was scary because I didn’t know where the other person was going to take me.” Ryan.

Grade 4 Camp Kookaburra

I liked camp because I did lots thing that I have never done before. - Adam At Camp Kookaburra we did eight thrilling activities which where indoor rock climbing, flying fox, orienteering, canoeing, low ropes, archery, initiatives, and games room but my favourite was the flying fox. All of those activities where really fun. The food there was fantastic, it was so good because they served food like bolognaise, hot dogs and lots of yummy desserts, it was probably the best food I've ever had! - Emma M I liked the zip line because it wasn’t scary, you could feel the breeze and it was kind of cool! - Isander P The games room was awesome because there was such a big range of games for us to play! - Hunter A I would say that the food there was absolutely astonishingly outstanding, my favourite dish was the breakfast. The activities were awesome especially the flying fox. - Josh R On camp some of my favourite things were the cabins, the activities and the food. In the cabins, the beds were bunk beds, but I slept on the bottom one just to be on the safe side because I sleep walk and talk. The activities were amazing and my favourite activity was the flying fox and the food there was amazing and camp was so fun! - Edwin M I think that the best bit of camp was the zip line because it was fast and awesome. I felt the wind blow against my face as I flew through the air. - William M My favourite activity was canoeing, and I loved hanging out with my friends. It was awesome. – Eva

SRC Update

This year our SRC have been working toward a major project of improving the top play area. Due to the scale of their ideas and the interruptions to this year, this project will need to carry through to next year. We are currently in the process of getting a number of quotes for the big items, such as resurfacing the top oval, improving the drainage next to the Ga Ga Pit, adding an adjustable basketball ring and the placement/refurbishment of the tables. Last week our SRC decided they’d like one final chance to contribute to this project, and have decided to run a casual dress fundraiser on Friday the 26th of November. We are asking for a gold coin donation, with all money raised going towards the SRC driven project of improving the top area. Please ensure your casual clothes are still SunSmart.

curriculum, it is important for all students to attend and take part in the lessons.

Further information about our Swimming Program (including payment and consent) will be placed on Compass.

The cost of the program is $8 per child. This includes bus, pool hire and the cost of instruction. Please note that

the school has been able to secure a ‘Sporting Schools’ grant again this year. We have also received extra funding

via the ‘Swimming In Schools’ program. Both of these Government initiatives have enabled us to significantly keep

the costs down from $60 per student.

Hot Shots Tennis Clinics Our students have enjoyed the opportunity to participate in Tennis Clinics during the latter part of Term 3 and the start of Term 4. As part of this program, all Prep students will receive a free tennis racquet over the next week or so. I would sincerely like to thank our coaches Aaron and Jim for running the clinics. The students have learnt a lot in only a short space of time. I would also like to thank the Spring Gully Tennis club for the use of the courts.

This year, we once again broke our Mango record, raising an impressive $1650 dollars from our Mango fundraiser. A huge thank you to everyone for their support. With a trying and unpredictable 2 years, our fundraising opportunities have been few and far between, so we really appreciate everyone’s support and effort. There was some exceptionally impressive sales totals amongst the final numbers, so an extra big thank you to those families that went that extra mile, selling mangos to their wider communities. Your effort and dedication have not gone unnoticed. Thank you Emma – Parents Committee President
