mOre infOfind The breeches ThaT are riGhT fOr yOu. yh says...WhaT maTerial?A lightweight, breathable and stretchy material is very important when choosing summer breeches. You need maximum movement and to be able to stay as cool as possible while riding – and of course, you want them to look as flattering as possible. Cotton and Lycra/elastane mixes are great, particularly for slightly bigger thighs as the fabric skims straight over. The modern stretch 100% polyester fabrics are great technical breeches but they tend to show every lump and bump!

WhaT sTyle?• High-waisted breeches are ideal for a curvy shape or anyone with a larger waist, as they tend to hold you in a little more.• Hipster styles are good for those with a boyish figure or those with a longer body.• Pleated front breeches (although quite hard to get hold of these days) can hide a multitude of sins. • Jeans-style are now available from lots of brands in stretch denim. These look great and can

also be worn as a fashion look away from horses as well.

WhaT abOuT cOlOurs and PaTTerns?When it comes to patterns, if you want to look slimmer, small patterns like checks are great. Go for a darker colour with a darker coloured full seat. The full seat in a dark shade cuts away the inner thigh and makes your legs look slimmer and your bottom look smaller, like a miracle diet – hurrah we hear you cry!

Rather than bright or pale colours, go for strong colours if you want to brighten up your wardrobe – strong tan, green, blue, purple and cerise can all look really stylish and flattering on any age as long as you tone in another piece of your clothing.

Wash advice – keeP yOur breeches briGhTer fOr lOnGerWhen you wash bright colours, remember to turn them inside out to stop the colour from running and wash them on a cool wash. If you get marks or stains, put neat fabric wash on them and leave it to soak for a few hours rather than washing them on a hot wash straight away.

MOre iNFOChOOsiNG the riGht shaMpOOThe choice of shampoos is huge and can sometimes be a little confusing too. Before you decide which one is best for your horse it’s worth doing a bit of research.Horses have extremely sensitive skin, and like us, some are more susceptible to irritation than others – so it’s wise to be careful when choosing a shampoo.When introducing any new

product, it’s always a good idea to do a patch test to make sure your horse isn’t allergic to it. If your horse is particularly sensitive go for a hypoallergenic shampoo which hopefully won’t irritate his skinThere is now a large number of colour-enhancing shampoos on the market. These tend to work one of two ways. Some contain dye to match and enhance your horse’s natural coat colour. Others contain optical brighteners, which are absorbed by the hair and increase the coat’s ability to reflect light,

enhancing his natural colour - so it appears brighter and shinier. Many whitening shampoos work by adding a blue agent to the coat. In natural light, this blue becomes neutral, making the white seem even whiter. These are great for using on any white markings.A concentrated shampoo can be a cost-effective option – read the label to work out how long the bottle will last and if it’s value for money.Whatever shampoo you use rinsing it all out is essential. Leaving any in can lead to irritation.

GFS lightweight turnout £69

Tested by Mary Fuller on her gelding, DexterThe fit of this good quality lightweight rug was ok although not as generous as other makes. However the gussets definitely reduced the pressure around the shoulder area and there was no sign of rubbing. The clip breast fastenings are quick and easy to use, and I like the elasticated leg straps which allow for movement. One of the more expensive rugs I tested but it did a good job. It kept Dexter clean and dry all summer.Colour Charcoal/berry redSizes 5ft 6in to 7ft

Weatherbeeta Freestyle Landa £84.99

Tested by Emily Laughton on her two horses Kishon and HemmingwayThis rug was great for keeping my horses dry and clean in summer. It has no filling at all so I only used it when they didn’t need additional layers. It fitted Hemmingway really well, but was a bit generous for Kishon. Tested by Mary Fuller on her WB gelding, JamesThis is a good lightweight rug which fitted James really well. It is quite generous depth wise, which I like. The shoulder gussets were a great addition as James has large shoulders and it made the rug fit and move with him. Tested by Julie Brown on her KWPN gelding, BoI like the fit of this rug – the shoulder gussets allow good freedom of movement. It’s a good depth and the tail flap is nice and generous giving added protection around the hindquarters. On unpredictable spring, summer and autumn days, it has kept him dry and clean. KP Equestrian combo £49

Tested by Gavin Connell on his ISH, Bailey, and his TB, DoubleThis is a really good fit on both of my horses – they both have quite different conformation but it suited both of them. I would say it’s more of a medium weight rug – it still gives good protection from rain and I’ve used it on cooler days too. All the fastenings are good quality and the shoulder gussets are in the right place, allowing good freedom of movement. Tested by Allison Lowther on her ID x TB, JesterI really like this rug. The fit is very good, it’s easy to handle, the fastenings are good quality and the outer material is robust too. It has 50g of filling and Jester stayed nice and warm well into the winter before he was clipped. It’s waterproof even in continuous heavy rain. Colours Navy, redSizes 5ft 3in to 7ft 6in

Tested by Emma Scotney on her gelding, OscarThis is a good quality lightweight turnout rug. It has no filling at all, making it perfect for those warm wet days. It kept Oscar clean and dry during the summer months. The fit is very good and the polyester lining kept his coat nice and shiny – it didn’t rub at all. Tested by Gavin Connell on his TB gelding, RossThis is a nice fitting rug, Ross has very high withers and I sometime struggle to get rugs to fit him nicely but this one was fine. It doesn’t move and it hasn’t rubbed him either. The shoulder gussets give good freedom and didn’t restrict his movement at all. MOre iNFOFiNd the riGht jacket FOr yOu. yh says...There are lots of discipline-specific jackets on the market these days and, if you’re going to look the part, it pays to buy one designed for the job you need it to do. For instance, a jacket for dressage should provide a bit of elegance and help to create an effortless picture. A show jumper will want a jacket which allows for movement – you don’t want it to split under pressure. If you dabble in a bit of everything, then buy a good all-rounder. The colourFor dressage, black and navy are still the choice for most riders, although for those who have reached the

dizzy heights of wearing top hat and tails, other colours are becoming more fashionable. For eventing, tweed or plain jackets are both popular – choose which you like best.

Showing also gives you a choice, depending on the class you’re entering. If you’re going for tweed, pick a colour that complements the colour of your horse.

Show jumpers are the daring ones. Bright red, green, brown, light blues, blousen-styles – most things go.

An all-round jacket should be navy or black as these colours are acceptable in most disciplines. Always check the rule book for your discipline. FitThe fit of your jacket can do wonders for your overall presentation.

To work out if yours fits properly, try this:1 Bend your elbows into the position

they’ll be in when riding to see if the arm length is correct – the sleeve should end at the top of your wrist

2 If you love jumping then straighten out your arms a little as you would when tackling a fence. You can then check if the jacket feels tight across your back – it shouldn’t

3 Squat in a riding position to test the length. The jacket should stop a few inches below your hip bone

4 Make sure the jacket isn’t too tight or baggy. A tailored jacket will flatter most figures while some jackets are specifically designed with the larger frame in mind

Tested by Julie Brown on her KWPN gelding, BoThis rug fitted Bo well and gave good coverage and protection from flies. The belly flap fitted snuggly but the tail flap could be bigger and the material did snag easily. Bo wore this rug every day in summer, so it had a lot of use, but I didn’t find the material very durable and the rug does need replacing. Most of us who own a mare would never know when they’re in season. But there are some mares who can’t help but let us know they’re feeling a little hormonal – becoming highly sensitive, moody little madams during their seasons.

If you own a mare who suffers from seasonal problems, it can make certain times of the month a bit tricky. As well as feeling moody they often feel uncomfortable too – during her season your mare’s ovary area becomes inflamed and painful. The ovaries are situated relatively high up near the spine, a little behind where the saddle sits. So it’s

no wonder some mares become sensitive and aren’t keen to be groomed or tacked up. It can also affect her ability to use her quarters and lengthen, impacting on her competition performance.

Adding a hormonal supplement to her diet can help your mare cope during her seasons. To get the best results, it’s a good idea to start feeding her the supplement early enough – her seasons can start from late February/early March.

Look for products which have a blend of natural extracts with multiple sourced antioxidants which support the system by flushing out the build-up of toxins associated with any inflammatory reaction. Using a concentrated source allows you to vary the feeding level according to her needs.

Herbs can also play a key role, for example chasteberry (vitex agnus-castus), also known as monk’s pepper or chaste tree berry, which has been recognised for many years for its benefits in supporting correct hormone levels.

To support any discomfort associated with hormonal stress, try cramp bark – a failsafe of North American native women who reach for it whenever menstrual cramps kick in.

Additional support from magnesium will allow muscle cramping around the affected area to relax, and help your mare feel more comfortable.
