Spring Footy Fever It was unfortunate that our August rally had to be cancelled due to
the wet weather. But Spring is here, September is footy finals time
and the weather forecast for Sunday is looking good!
Come dressed in your favourite team’s colours for this rally – footy
jumpers, footy socks, saddle cloths, etc.
Gold coin donation required, with the amount raised to be
matched by our pony club. Junior Committee will also have a
raffle and a lolly jar competition so bring your spare coins!
All proceeds to go to Shepparton Pony Club for a sculpture in
memory of their former club member Taylor Farley, who died
tragically in an accident earlier this year.

Laminitis Alert
Laminitis or Founder is a serious condition which causes the breakdown of the internal supporting structures
(laminae) between the hoof wall and the coffin bone inside the hoof. Laminitis causes severe pain and if left
untreated can result in permanent lameness, hoof distortion and in very serious cases the death of the horse.
There are numerous causes of laminitis, but the most common cause is eating too much rich spring or autumn
grass. Our very wet winter followed by recent mild and sunny weather means that there will be lots of rich, fast-
growing spring grass around in coming weeks. Overweight horses and ponies are prone to laminitis. Keep a close
eye on your four-legged friend this spring! Possible signs of laminitis include:
Shifting weight from side to side
Lameness and unwillingness to move
Standing with forelegs extended in front and hindlegs forward to try to take weight off front legs
Pronounced increase in the rate and strength of the digital pulse. This can be felt where the digital artery
runs over the back of the fetlock
Increased breathing rate
Here are a few things you can do to reduce the risk of laminitis:
Don’t let your horse or pony get too fat – give them regular exercise and control their food intake.
Restrict access to rich pastures during the middle of the day when sugar content in grass is at its highest.
It is much better to lock your horse up during the day and let them graze at night if they are at risk of
laminitis.
Use a grazing muzzle to control how much grass they eat.
There are also supplements available such as “Founderguard” that can be fed to your horse to lessen the
risk of them developing the disease.
If you think your horse might have laminitis seek veterinarian attention.
For more information about the disease visit www.ahf-laminitis.org. This is a US website set up by the Animal
Health Foundation which is dedicated to preventing, and finding out more about the causes of, laminitis. There
are some very informative videos on the site.
SEPTEMBER 2012
This month we have a fantastic offer for our members. We are offering for sale as a fundraiser the annual Horse Deals Horse Health Diary.
The Diary is published by Horse Deals as a factual health reference guide for horse-owners across Australia, with the sole aim of education on horse health and welfare.
The cost is $16.00 and there will be a sample available at the rally for you to have a look through. Please see Tracey Newnham.
This is a great birthday or Christmas gift for all our horsey friends so let’s all buy one and also support our Club.

Zone Showjumping Event, Fimister Shield, 28 October
The Kilmore & District Pony Club belongs to the Central Zone, along with other clubs such as Beveridge, Broadford, Gisborne, Lancefield, Laurimar, Macedon, Oaklands, Tullamarine, Woodend.
Each year The Central Zone holds a range of events during the year.
These include: Zone Games, Flat & Musical Ride Event, Zone Horse Trials and Lowden Family Shield.
On 28 October, Central Zone will hold the Fimister Shield, an annual showjumping competition, at Woodend Pony Club.
The event is designed to give all grades of rider experience of different kinds of showjumping events. Riders who place or win an event on the day receive points for their club. The scores for each rider on the day are aggregated towards their club score and the Club with the most points wins.
You need to be aware the jumps can be at the maximum height for each grade so if you need to know what this is either check the PCAV website or ask DC Cathy Dingwall at this rally.
The day is a lot of fun so if you are interested please let Tracey Newnham know.
You need to make sure you have been graded (just ask Cathy) and pop your name down on the list.
The Club will submit the entry form (no individual entries). Cost is $30 which needs to be paid at this rally.

be a great social occasion, we are also in the draw to win the naming rights for the 2012 Kilmore Pacing Cup
and have been given an invitation for two to attend the all expenses paid Cocktail Party at Kilmore
Trackside on draw night , Sunday 7 October. This includes cocktail food, drinks, a full program of twilight
harness racing, entertainment and prizes on the night.
