LOFFENSEThe Tigers return six starters from an offense that set school records forpoints (475), first downs (298) and touchdowns scored. Heading the list ofreturning starters is 2003 Freshman All-America running back Justin Vincentalong with second-team All-America center Ben Wilkerson. As a unit, theTigers return 2,439 yards rushing and 23 of the teams' 24 rushing TDs froma year ago. On the other hand, the Tigers lose two of their top two receiversin Michael Clayton (78 rec., 1,079 yards, 10 TDs) and Devery Henderson (53rec., 861 yards, 11 TDs). The Tigers also lost quarterback Matt Mauck, whoopted to forgo his senior season to enter the NFL Draft. Mauck, a second-team All-SEC pick in 2003, threw a school-record 28 touchdowns aftercompleting 229 of 358 passes for 2,825 yards.

QuarterbacksSenior Marcus Randall enters the spring as the only quarterback on the LSUsquad with any game experience. Randall has played in 22 games during hiscareer with six starts, which includes the Cotton Bowl game against Texas tocap the 2002 season. In 22 games, Randall has completed 114 of 223 passesfor 1,583 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions. Highly-regardedredshirt freshmen Matt Flynn and JaMarcus Russell are both expected to battlewith Randall for the starting position this spring.

4 JaMarcus Russell12 Marcus Randall15 Matt Flynn16 Brian Farrar

Running BacksJustin Vincent returns for his sophomore season in 2004 after setting an LSUfreshman rushing record with 1,001 yards in 2003.Vincent, who was namedMVP of both the SEC Championship Game and the Sugar Bowl, rushed for201 yards and a pair of scores against Georgia in the SEC title game and thenfollowed that with 117 yards and a TD against Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl.Vincent will be joined in the backfield by junior Joseph Addai (520 yards, 2 TDsin 2003), sophomore Alley Broussard (389 yards, 4 TDs), senior Shyrone Carey(338 yards, 6 TDs) and sophomore Barrington Edwards (169 yards).

Wide ReceiversThe loss of Michael Clayton and Devery Henderson leaves junior Skyler Greenas the Tigers' top returning wide receiver. Last year, Green ranked third onthe squad with 48 catches for 519 yards and 5 TDs, including the game-winner against Georgia in September. Joining Green as a wideout for theTigers will be sophomores Dwayne Bowe (9 rec., 106 yards in 2003) and CraigDavis (7 rec., 63 yards) and redshirt freshman Amp Hill.

Tight EndsThe Tigers return a pair of experienced players at tight end in senior DemetriRobinson and junior David Jones to go along with sophomore Keith Zinger. Lastyear, Jones caught 13 passes for 232 yards and a touchdown, while Zingerhad three receptions for 31 yards. Robinson missed the last six games of theseason with a groin injury, but he's expected to be at full strength whenspring practice starts.

82 David Jones83 Kory Hebert84 Andrew Wright86 Caleb Angelle88 Demetri Robinson89 Keith Zinger

Offensive LinePerhaps the strength of the Tiger offense will be that of the line, which willbe led by senior center Ben Wilkerson, junior tackle Andrew Whitworth and juniorguard Nate Livings. As a unit in 2003, the Tigers allowed only 22 sacks allseason and they held their opponent without a sack in five of the final sixregular-season games. Last year, Wilkerson earned second-team All-America honors from the Associated Press after starting all 14 games for theTigers. In two years with the Tigers, Whitworth has started 27 games at tackleand has given up only 5 sacks, while being whistled for just 13 penalties.Livings started 10 games for the Tigers in 2003, missing four games midwaythrough the year with a knee injury. Junior Rudy Niswanger and junior TerrellMcGill both return as part-time starters for the Tigers and will be looked at tofill in for the departed Rodney Reed and Stephen Peterman on the line.

THE DEFENSEThe Tigers return seven starters from a defense that was considered the bestin the nation in 2003 as LSU ranked first in the country in scoring (11.0points per game) and total defense (252.0 yards per game). The Tigers alsoranked among the national leaders in rushing defense (67.0 yards per game),pass defense efficiency (89.8 rating) and pass defense (185.0 yards pergame). Heading the list of returning starters for the Tigers are cornerbackCorey Webster, linebacker Lionel Turner, defensive end Marcus Spears and safetyLaRon Landry.

Defensive LineGone from last year's team is all-everything defensive tackle Chad Lavalais,a likely high draft pick in this spring's NFL Draft. Back in the trenches for theTigers however will be first-team All-SEC pick Marcus Spears along with KyleWilliams, an honorable all-conference selection. Junior Melvin Oliver andsophomore Kirston Pittman both played valuable minutes last year and couldbe counted on to step in to fill the void left by the departure of Lavalais anddefensive end Marquise Hill. In addition, junior college transfer Claude Wrotenjoined the Tigers for bowl practice and will go through spring drills and willadd quality depth to the defensive front.

For years outsiders viewed the LSU football program as an unpolishedgem, a potential giant waiting to be reborn in the world of college football. With the wealth of resources LSU has to offer, its tradition and the availabletalent within the state of Louisiana, all the program needed was the rightleader to lead it. In four years as head coach of the Tigers, Nick Saban hasproven that he is that leader.

Since taking over a program that suffered through seven losing seasonsin the 1990s, Saban has guided the Tigers to the pinnacle of college football- winning the 2003 BCS National Championship with a 21-14 victory overOklahoma in the Nokia Sugar Bowl. The victory culminated a four-year rideunder Saban that has been unmatched in the history of Tiger football. Sincetaking over in 2000, Saban has guided the Tigers to a 39-13 overall mark, while claiming a pair of SEC titles in 2001 and 2003. LSU's 2003 BCSNational Championship is just the second for the Tigers in football, and thefirst since 1958.

Saban's ability to successfully lead the Tigers comes from a managementstyle that focuses on the entire program, one that puts his players in positionto have success, both on the field and in the classroom. Armed with a planthat starts with recruiting quality people, outstanding football players andgood students, Saban and his staff have transformed LSU into a team that issure to be a fixture among the nation's elite programs for years to come.

On the field, Saban has developed a reputation as a defensivemastermind who is among the best in the game - professional or college -when it comes to game day coaching decisions. His defenses are physical, aggressive and deceptive, while offensively, the Tigers put up staggeringnumbers with a wealth of skill players leading the way.

Off the field, Saban demands excellence from his players in both theclassroom as well as the community. There's not a week that goes by that atleast one member of the LSU football team is not out speaking to a groupsomewhere in the Baton Rouge community. Whether it's talking to anelementary school or visiting sick children in the hospital, Saban's team hasmade a positive impact on many people in the state of Louisiana.

When it comes to education, Saban has long been an advocate of gettinga degree. He's often been quoted as saying that he's never seen a personbetter off without a college degree than with one. As a result, he played a keyrole in raising most of the $15 million for LSU's state-of-the-art CoxCommunications Academic Center for Student-Athletes. The center, thebest of its kind in college athletics, features a 1,000-seat auditorium withover 100 computers in a 54,000-square foot facility that gives all of LSU'sstudent-athletes the best chance to have success in the classroom.

Saban's mission statement for the LSU football program is simple. Hewants his players to become better people for having been a part of theprogram. He also wants to develop his players so they can reach their full

athletic potential, which will enable them to have the opportunity to win achampionship. Finally, it's his plan to help each player graduate and launchtheir career so that when they leave LSU they can have the bestopportunities in life.

Four years at LSU have produced dozens of graduates, a pair of SECchampionships and a national title as well as student-athletes who are bothadmired and looked up to in the community. So far, it's been missionaccomplished under Nick Saban.

Saban became the 31st head coach of the LSU Tigers on November 30,1999, after five years as head coach at Michigan State. Saban's first four yearsat LSU have produced a 39-13 overall mark, which included a school-record13-1 mark and a No. 1 national ranking in 2003. In addition, Saban wasnamed the Associated Press National Coach of the Year as well as being therecipient for the Bear Bryant Award and the Eddie Robinson Award in 2003.Saban's 39 wins are the most-ever by an LSU coach in four years and hejoins Paul Dietzel as the only two coaches in school history to have multiple10-win seasons (both have done it twice). Saban, along with Dietzel andBernie Moore, are also the only coaches in LSU history to win more than oneSEC title, with each doing it two times.

The 2003 Tigers stormed their way to the national title with a remarkabledefense, one that ranked first in the nation in points per game (11.0) andtotal defense (252.0 yards per game), while also holding 13 of the 14opponents to fewer than 20 points. The defense scored a school-recordseven touchdowns, including the game-winning points on a Marcus Spearsinterception return against Oklahoma in the Nokia Sugar Bowl.

While the defense was holding teams at bay, the Tiger offense wasspectacular in its own right, scoring a school-record 475 points and averaging33.9 points per game. The Tiger offense, behind the play of quarterback MattMauck, set the school standard for passing touchdowns (30), offensivetouchdowns (56), completed passes (255) and first downs (298).

Using the approach of taking it one game at a time and focusing on"what is" rather than "what was", the Tigers ran the table the final six weeksof the regular season, dominating opponents on both sides of the ball. Aftera 19-7 setback to Florida on Oct. 11, the Tigers won their final six games byan average score of 35 to 10. Only Ole Miss came within a touchdown of theTigers during that 6-game stretch, a run that included a 31-7 win overAuburn, a 27-3 victory over Alabama and a 55-24 victory over Arkansas. LSUstamped its ticket to the BCS National Championship game with adominating 34-13 win over Georgia in the SEC title game, marking thesecond conference championship in three years for the Tigers.

The Tigers put an end to its magical season with another dominatingdefensive effort against a high-powered Oklahoma team in the Sugar Bowl. The Tigers held the Sooners to only 154 yards of offense and just 54 yards

rushing in the 21-14 victory in the Sugar Bowl.Saban's impact at LSU was immediate as he guided a team coming off

back-to-back losing seasons to an 8-4 mark and a win over 15th-rankedGeorgia Tech in the 2000 Peach Bowl to rekindle the fire of a proud footballtradition in Baton Rouge.

Saban's influence on the Tigers went much further in 2001 as he led LSUto the school's first outright SEC title since 1986 with a 31-20 win oversecond-ranked Tennessee in the SEC Championship game. The Tigers closedout their 10-3 campaign in 2001 with a 47-34 thrashing of Big 10 ChampionIllinois in the Sugar Bowl.

A year after losing two of the most prolific offensive players in schoolhistory in quarterback Rohan Davey and wide receiver Josh Reed, Sabanused a tenacious defense coupled with a steady offense to lead the 2002Tigers to an 8-5 overall mark and the school's second straight appearance ina New Year's Day bowl. LSU scored a school-record 30 or more points in sixstraight games in 2002, while the Tiger defense held the opposition to lessthan 275 yards in each of the first six games of the year.

A trademark of Saban-coached teams has been their ability to overcomeadversity and still effectively perform on the field. In 2001, the Tigers had toovercome the loss of Davey and running back LaBrandon Toefield in the SECChampionship game, while in 2002 LSU prevailed despite losing startingquarterback Mauck midway through the season.

Beating Tennessee to win the league title in 2001 is one thing, but thefashion in which Saban and the Tigers did so speaks volumes on the impacthe has had on his squads. Playing without two of their offensive standoutsin Davey and Toefield, not only did the Tigers respond to Saban's challengeto step up, but they were dominant, outscoring the high-powered Vol offense21-3 in the second half.

A year later, LSU found itself in a similar situation, losing three starters -Mauck, Toefield and free safety Damien James - in consecutive weeks. LSUovercame that adversity and found itself heading into the final week of the2002 season with a chance at reaching the SEC Championship game. Onlya last-minute comeback by Arkansas kept the Tigers from winning its secondconsecutive SEC Western Division title and participating in the league'schampionship game.

Losing players such as Mauck, Davey and Toefield and still finding a wayto be successful on the field has been a trademark of Saban-coached teams.Teaching the players to trust and believe in each other is a characteristic thatSaban has branded on his squads. The philosophy of "out of yourself andinto the team" is something that Saban instills on a daily basis into hissquad. He also preaches to his teams to play for 60 minutes, to become adominant team on every play of every game, and not worry about what thescoreboard reads. The players respond.

That couldn't have been more true than the "Bluegrass Miracle" asMarcus Randall's 75-yard Hail Mary pass to Devery Henderson as timeexpired gave the Tigers an unlikely 33-30 win over Kentucky in one of thewildest finishes to a football game in LSU history.

Prior to his arrival at LSU for the 2000 season, Saban led his final Spartanteam in 1999 to a No. 7 ranking in the nation and became the first MichiganState squad to win 10 games in one season in 34 years.

Saban's 1999 Michigan State team defeated Notre Dame, Michigan, OhioState and Penn State all in the same year for the first time since 1965 andrecorded six wins at home for the first time since the 1912 season.

Saban has long been revered in football coaching circles as one of thekeen minds of the game, having coached under some of the best footballtechnicians in the country on both the college and professional levels.

He built his reputation as an assistant coach, but as a head coach he hasshown the ability to put together a total program, one that produces bignumbers on both sides of the football while stressing discipline andresponsibility off the field.

"He's a first-rate person and he's a marvelous football coach," said BillPolian, the president of the NFL's Indianapolis Colts, who is considered oneof the premier minds in professional football. "He brings all the right valuesto the position and to the job. He believes in an exciting and up-tempooffense and yet his teams are always terrifically sound and very physical."

Saban's background in football is rich and varied. He coached in the NFLunder Bill Belichick at Cleveland and under Jerry Glanville at Houston. Heis a protégé of George Perles at Michigan State and Earle Bruce at OhioState. He got his start under venerable Washington coach Don James as agraduate assistant at Kent State.

"No-nonsense" is one description of his style of coaching, but consistentand exacting might be more precise. "Hard work" can be attached to anysuccessful program, but also working smart is a trademark of Saban coachedteams. The keys to Saban's success are founded on aggressive anddisciplined leadership and a philosophy of personal responsibility both onthe football field and in the classroom.

"Basically, if anybody doesn't want to work hard or be committed to theway he's committed, then they're going to have a problem with him," said

Belichick, coach of the Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots. "Now,if they like to work, they won't have any problems at all."

Saban is a communicator who gets the best out of his players, a coachwho can guarantee that a player willing to dedicate himself to the programwill maximize his talents.

"Instead of looking at the overall picture, he gives his players somethingthey can really lash their teeth into, which allows them to play moreaggressively," said Dean Pees, the head coach at Kent State who served as adefensive coordinator under Saban. "There are a lot of guys who can drawup defenses in the dirt and draw X's and O's. The question is what littlethings can you find to help each player play his position? That's one thingNick is good at."

Saban has a career win-loss record of 82-39-1 for a winning percentageof .674, a total that includes five years as head coach at Michigan State(1995-99), four seasons at LSU and one year at Toledo (1990). He also hasextensive experience in the NFL, having coached the secondary of theHouston Oilers for two seasons (1988-89) and having served as defensivecoordinator for the Cleveland Browns for four seasons (1991-94).

During his five-year tenure as head coach at Michigan State, Sabantutored four first-team All-Americans and 10 NFL draft picks. While at LSU,Saban has produced six first-team All-Americans and the Tigers have had 12NFL Draft picks.

The 52-year-old Saban returned to Michigan State following four seasonsas the Cleveland Browns' defensive coordinator from 1991-94. The Brownswent from allowing the most points in the NFL prior to Saban's arrival toallowing the fewest points in 1994. His defensive unit allowed a league-low21 touchdowns and 204 points in 1994, the sixth-fewest points surrenderedin NFL history at the time.

Saban previously served as head coach at the University of Toledo wherehe guided the Rockets to a 9-2 overall record in 1990, including a share ofthe Mid-America Conference title at 7-1. The Rockets ranked among theNCAA leaders in both total defense (12th at 284.8 yards) and scoringdefense (16th at 16.2 points). In his rookie season as a head coach, Toledomissed posting an undefeated record by only five points.

He began his first stint in the NFL with the Houston Oilers as thesecondary coach from 1988-89. The Oilers ranked among the AFC leaders ininterceptions in both 1988 (tied for second with 22) and 1989 (fourth with 21).

As secondary coach and defensive coordinator, Saban played an integralpart in helping Michigan State to three postseason bowl appearances from1983-87, including a Big Ten championship in 1987 and a 20-17 triumph overSouthern California in the 1988 Rose Bowl. The Spartans led the nation inrushing defense in 1987, allowing only 61.2 yards per game, and rankedsecond in scoring defense, permitting 12.4 points.

His college coaching credits also include stops at the U.S. Naval Academy(1982), Ohio State (1980-81), West Virginia (1978-79), Syracuse (1977) andKent State (1975-76). While coaching the secondary at Ohio State, he helpedproduce four NFL draft choices.

He began his coaching career in 1973 as a graduate assistant at his almamater Kent State. A defensive back for the Golden Flashes from 1970-72,Saban played in the 1972 Tangerine Bowl against Tampa. He also picked uptwo letters as a shortstop on the Kent State baseball team.

Born October 31, 1951, in Fairmont, W.Va., Saban earned his bachelor'sdegree in business from Kent State in 1973 and his master's in sportsadministration in 1975. Saban, who is an avid golfer, co-authored "TigerTurnaround" in 2001, a 128-page book documenting his first two years inBaton Rouge.

He and his wife, the former Terry Constable of Fairmont, W.Va., have twochildren, Nicholas and Kristen.

2003 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Behind a suffocating defense that limited the nation's top scoring offense to only 154

yards, the Tigers claimed their second national title in football with a 21-14 win over

Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl. The victory in the BCS National Championship contest

marked LSU's first national title since 1958 and also sent the Tigers, champions of the

Southeastern Conference, to a final overall record of 13-1. Running back Justin Vincent earned

MVP honors for the game, rushing for 117 yards and one touchdown in leading the Tigers to

the victory.Vincent opened the contest with a 64-yard run on the game's first play, opening the

door for what appeared to be an early LSU TD. However, quarterback Matt Mauck fumbled the

snap on first-and-goal at the 1-yard line to halt the Tiger drive. The Tigers did score on their

next possession, which was setup by a Corey Webster interception that gave LSU the ball at

the OU 32-yare line. Three plays later, Skyler Green went 24-yards on an end-around, giving

the Tigers a 7-0 advantage. The Sooners tied the game at 7-7 midway through the second

quarter on a 1-yard plunge by Kejuan Jones, which was setup by a blocked punt. The Tigers led

14-7 at halftime following an 18-yard run by Vincent. LSU struck again early in the second half

as Marcus Spears returned an interception 20 yards for a TD just 47 seconds into the third

quarter, giving the Tigers a 21-7 advantage. A defensive struggle continued for most of

the second half before the Sooners pulled to within 21-14 on another 1-yard

run by Jones with just over 11 minutes left in the contest. The teams

traded possessions for the next five minutes before the Sooners

mounted a drive deep inside LSU territory. OU had first-and-10

at the LSU 12-yard line before the Tigers turned the Sooners

away on four straight plays, including a fourth-and-10 situation

with 2:52 to play. After another three and out for the Tigers on

offense, the Sooners had one final chance. However, the

Tigers held the Sooners at bay, sacking quarterback

Jason White on fourth-and-10 to secure the victory

and the school's first national title in football in 45

years. Defensively, linebacker Lionel Turner

led LSU with nine tackles, including a

pair of sacks, one of which came on

the last offensive play of the game

for the Sooners. In all, LSU

recorded five sacks in the

contest and held the

Sooners to only 54

yards rushing.
