From big name artists to recent graduates, region-wide outdoor murals to exhibitions across the UK, evening performances to late-night studio openings: this year’s event is set to be our most ambitious to date.

Expert artists, super studios, glorious landscapes and vibrant towns – this winning combination makes the event one of the best loved of its kind. The heart of Spring Fling is our artists and makers who inject passion, skill and hard work - truly an inspiration to us all.

Creatively and culturally great things are happening in Dumfries and Galloway right now, largely due to people working together. We are proud to be part of this movement – as a small team we are only able to make innovative new projects happen through the generosity of our professional partners and

collaborators.

By Bike Saturday 24 May: 9.45am start in Corsock (opposite Pringles). Taking in studios en route through Crossmichael, Laurieston, New Galloway, Balmaclellan and back to Corsock. May divert to Kirkpatrick Durham if there’s opportunity or the weather is (very) poor. Lunch in New Galloway. About 25 miles with a few moderate climbs but relatively easy going.

Sunday 25 May: 9.45am start at the Riverside car park in Newton Stewart. Up on the B road to Glen Trool and then by minor roads to Mochrum Park, Whauphill and Wigtown. Depending on weather and disposition of the riders, we may go on down to Isle of Whithorn, or return by the cycle route to Newton Stewart. Late lunch at Wigtown. Around 50 miles, with some climbing. Monday 26 May: 9.45am start at Canonbie Village Hall (car park). An unusual ‘eastern’ ride. The route to take in studios in Claygate, Langholm, Eaglesfield and Canonbie. Lunch in Langholm. About 25 miles, moderately hilly.

Kindly organised by Mike Gray of the local CTC members group, all riders with a suitable bike are most welcome. Rides are free but booking is essential. Ages under 17 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian or have signed permission.

SPRINGBACK

Our Springback Scheme (formerly the Homecomer Scheme) allows artists who have a connection to Dumfries and Galloway to take part in Spring Fling; many grew up in the region, and some have lived or worked in Dumfries and Galloway in recent years.

NEIGHBOUR

Our Neighbours Scheme was introduced in 2013 to strengthen our links with artists and makers from our neighbouring regions and allows a limited number of them to take part in Spring Fling in venues across the border from where they live and work. This year we are delighted to be working in partnership with C-Art - the Cumbrian open studios event (www.c-art.org.uk) to present three artists from Cumbria.

This Young Artists Programme awards a bursary and a period of mentoring to three recent graduates with a connection to Dumfries and Galloway. This year in addition to the two bursaries funded by The Holywood Trust, we are delighted to have been able to provide an additional bursary funded by the Archie Sutter Watt Trust.

Since 2009 this two-part residency has allowed an artist to create new work through public interaction at Wigtown Book Festival. This work is then presented in an open studio setting in Wigtown for Spring Fling.

Astrid Jaekel is the 2013/2014 resident - a successful Edinburgh based illustrator, she has worked with many clients including the City of Edinburgh Council, The Prince’s Foundation, and Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature. One of her greatest achievements is her most recent which have seen her paper cut designs being laser cut into metal sheets and integrated into the BT Telephone Exchange on Edinburgh’s Rose Street.

Through a desire to understand what makes Wigtown tick and what makes it such a unique cornerstone of Scottish literary life, Astrid’s project ‘Windows of Wigtown’ saw her collect people’s feelings, memories and perceptions of the town and its book festival. The results were spectacular, perfectly linking local life to the thousands of incoming festival goers.

Schools Poster CompetitionFor the first time the official Spring Fling 2014 poster has been designed by a Dumfries and Galloway primary school pupil. The winning poster will be printed and distributed around the UK and along with the two runners up will be exhibited at Gracefield Arts Centre at Spring Fling @ Home between 15 March – 3 May.

Flowers are my passion, as are the small, bright-eyed birds that have happily found their way into my paintings. Colour, texture and a love of the decorative defines my work. My paintings are flights of fancy, playing with elements of the observed, imagined and remembered.

what to expect: Portpatrick is a delight, and visitors to my bright studio will find artwork inspired by this dramatic coast: from the shifting vast West Galloway skies, to the restless sea, to the wild primroses, sea pinks and dark violets found on the cliff paths.

My work mainly depicts birds and landscape and is inspired by direct experience and travel. I am constantly exploring new print media as well as wrestling with the technical challenges each one brings. This year I learnt an old North American technique called ‘Provincetown’ printing.

what to expect: Visit my working print studio and I will explain the many different printmaking techniques I use, including Provincetown printing. I paint primarily in acrylics and use my experiences of mountains and coast as inspiration, with motifs ranging from the far northwestern reaches of the Highlands to the southernmost tip of Scotland here in our beautiful county.

what to expect: I am always searching for an expressive equivalent in paint of my outdoor experiences, and to this end am introducing more abstract and elemental passages into my work. Visitors will see a large range of work, from small prints to large canvases, and topographical to experimental work.

I make classic thrown pottery forms which are illustrated with designs derived from the natural world. Occasionally images of the human figure are included which implies a narrative with much scope for interpretation as you are taken on a journey across and around each piece.

what to expect: Visitors to my studio space will be able to see work in different stages of production, view an extensive selection of sketch books and other sources of inspiration and see demonstrations of my decorating technique throughout the event.

05I often try to figure out what attracts me to paint a particular scene. The detail, I believe, is secondary to the colours, the shapes and how they lie in relation to one another. Consequently, I try to keep this in mind when I paint.

what to expect: A selection of old and new work will be exhibited, alongside limited edition giclée prints. We will also have a collaborative canvas for visitors to have a go at painting. Like a visitors’ book, but better!

Astrid Jaekel is an Edinburgh based artist/illustrator whose work focuses on location based installations applied to existing architecture. Her project ‘Windows of Wigtown’ will see the Wigtown County Buildings transformed into an open book giving visitors an insight into what makes the place tick.

what to expect: Come backstage and look behind the scenes where you will find Astrid surrounded by bits of cut up paper. She will be extending her project ‘Windows of Wigtown’ by gradually developing the narrative of the town. Pop in and become part of it!

I am fascinated by texture and colour. I create original hand-made prints on paper exploring the diverse coastal landscape of the Machars. I specialise in the collagraph printmaking technique, a method that produces unpredictable results. This enables me to create dynamic, textural, vibrant prints.

what to expect: As well as my prints, my sketch pads and printing plates will be on display for visitors to view and handle. I will demonstrate how a collagraph print is created by hand inking a collaged plate then passing it through my converted mangle printing press to create an embossed print.

I am a portrait and figurative artist working in oils. With my portrait work I try to not only capture a likeness of the sitter but the essence as well. The canvas is the reality.

what to expect: Apart from portrait and figurative paintings and drawings I will be showing my contemporary Stride Style and work in progress. Drawing pads will be on display to show how I build up my work.

I make wood fired porcelain and stoneware with clays, slips and glazes that are mixed by hand. Most pots are wheel thrown, some slab built and all are for using. They are fired to 1300°C in a three chambered kiln.

what to expect: I will be demonstrating all the steps in making a lidded jar on the Saturday, and in making a footed bowl on the Sunday. Visitors will see the pottery, studio and the kiln as well as the beautiful view. Explanations will be given of all the processes.

I am interested in the concept of good design in contemporary living and attempt to create a continuous collection of original and distinctive textile hats of universal appeal.

My work is inspired by the scenery of the Galloway Hills and Solway Coast, often featuring patterns of sunlight and shadow on masonry or rocks, contrasted with the soft textures and colours of vegetation. Recent paintings have depicted woodlands and shorescapes in different seasons.

what to expect: In my gallery space on the ground floor, completed paintings, prints and greetings cards will be on display and available for purchase. Upstairs in my studio, visitors will see the acrylic paints and other materials and equipment I use together with some work in progress.

My medium is oil on board. I paint flower pieces in a traditional manner after the Dutch masters. I have also been in love with wildlife all my life and find endless inspiration painting the local birds and animals.

what to expect: In the gallery you can see examples of my flower and wildlife paintings. I shall be able to explain the preparation process and evolution of the flower paintings, and see the various stages as a flower painting is constructed.

Molten beeswax, tree resin and flames have taken over my life! Extending my practice with the ancient art of encaustic painting allows me to create numerous translucent layers of wax with embedded colour and fibres on wood panels and make monotype prints on handmade paper.

what to expect: All equipment and materials I work with will be on show, as well as examples of work at every stage of development. For those interested, I can explain the dynamic processes of melting, fusing, adding colour and mark, embedding and gouging.

My printing techniques and styles are influenced by what the Japanese woodblock tradition has taught me over the years. I also employ a wider variety of processes such as stencilling and vinyl-cut, as well as continuing to develop my woodblock carving and printing skills.

what to expect: The tools of the trade, including my barens (hand-held printing presses), cutting knives, and examples of carved blocks, will be on show in my studio. There will also be the opportunity for visitors to create their own print to take home.

My formal education as an interior designer, as well as many years experience in furniture design and manufacture enable me to maintain an individual style of woodworking that is strongly design led. Each piece is developed along practical as well as decorative lines.

My work engages with nature. I focus on recreating the essence of natural form through the medium of willow, ash, bog myrtle, hazel and other local woods. Influences from Japan continue to inspire my attempts to capture the simplicity, practicality and beauty of the materials.

For both stills and animated projects I work from my own sketches and photographs, utilising sophisticated software programs to transform the original image into artwork of a digital form, or I create purely digitally from scratch with my imagination as the source material.

what to expect: Visitors to my studio will see examples of sketches, drawings and digital images created during my time at university, as well as current works in progress such as plasticine models used for my stop-frame animations.

My inspiration is from art movements in history, different cultures and, more recently, my own back yard of Kirkcudbright and Galloway. Photographs and initial line drawings are computerised for digital printing. Fabrics, wallpapers, accessories and wearable art are adorned with my patterns and patchworked.

what to expect: My studio is bursting with colour! I work from original drawings and photographs, computer manipulation, and finally designs are digitally printed. I patchwork my own fabrics with found and other fabrics to create interesting imagery and colour combinations.

My paintings are based on my experience of place. I draw and paint using a blend of intuitive gestures and conscious forms from what I have observed, documented and remembered.

what to expect: A variety of paintings, collage and mixed media drawings from my exciting new urban based project will be on display. Visitors can delve into my sketchbooks of workings, ideas and photography that build up a picture of how a final piece is created.

I love finding humour in everyday things and twisting words and phrases to redefine them. When you look at one of my pieces you should see a beautiful object with often a hidden (or not so hidden) humour.

what to expect: My studio is large and airy, full of pieces in all stages of creation. Hopefully raising a smile while visitors browse for that piece they cannot live without!

I use performance, film and installation to create temporary public artworks in everyday contexts. I also draw. My work explores our interaction with wild(er)ness, both in ourselves and our environments.

I have a bold, loose style using both watercolour and oil, and have recently begun an adventure in collage which seems to suit my love of depicting Galloway landscape in a semi abstract manner.

what to expect: I have recently been given an old card spinner, and intend filling it with small paintings, collages, greetings cards and as yet unfound treasures. Visitors can also see the sketches and paintings done over the winter at the Cairnsmore Nature Reserve near Gatehouse of Fleet. Larger, framed work also on show.

Clays and slips with fire thrown in for good measure. My pots are made using a series of techniques, each of which I love. Throwing clay, pouring and trailing slips, and then the physicality of wood firing. In essence: ‘The alchemy of mud to jug’.

I make wheel thrown, high fired stoneware pots for use in the kitchen and at the table. This year my focus has been developing a new range of semi matt glazes.

I work with stone most of the time - carving, dry-stone building, lettering, cobbling, etc, but have recently started using a wider range of materials too. I often work to commission, and undertake high-quality stone landscaping work as well as sculpture.

what to expect: I will be showing smaller pieces indoors, while dotted around the garden and woodland will be a number of bigger outdoor sculptures. My main medium is stone, but I often incorporate anything from iron to melted plastic! There will be fresh tea and coffee on offer.

The work on show will be some of my latest series of paintings that are compositions of the many gifts that my children have given me or made over the years and have been much loved and appreciated; each one has a story. There will also be some earlier works on show.

My work explores notions of ‘landscapes within’ the mind, and I examine ways in which we engage with ‘nature’ and ‘wilderness’. Rather than being windows-to-the-world, my paintings are compositions made from a range of sources, including memories, texts, sketches, photographs and sound recordings.

what to expect: This year my work will be a response to a work of literature, Nan Shepherd’s ‘The Living Mountain’ (1945) a poetic celebration of the Cairngorms, in which the writer explores many things integral to the mountain, and thus, ultimately, things integral to herself.

My jewellery is based on my love of collections, whether in a junk shop, curiosity cabinet or jewellery box. When translating these ideas into my work I incorporate the shapes, textures and often collected objects themselves.

I paint in oils, sometimes tiny pictures when travelling, but larger canvases are invigorating. Sculptures often are in clay allowing a hand-written immediacy. Recently plaster, wood, metal even cardboard create slender slices and spears that suit current work. I use colour to supplement shape.

The North Atlantic runs like a connecting current through all my work which is based on travels to the North and Iceland. While ice and surging waves maintain their attraction, tectonic plates beckon, and rifts, fractures and fissures are being visually explored.

what to expect: On view will be large monoprints, coloured etchings, handmade books and many new paintings, some in progress. The tools of the trade will also be displayed from etching press and sketchbooks to wire forms and other inspirational objects found on beaches.

My art is a response to my feelings about the natural environment around me. I make prints using screenprinting, lino and woodcuts and also venture into three dimensional works sculpting in wood, ceramic and metal as I explore a theme.

My work is mainly Scottish landscapes with a particular interest in colour and mood. I try to retain the first visual impact of the subject. I also look for the drama in the subjects, often changing the colour in order to maximise this drama.

what to expect: Visitors will see recent paintings on display in all public rooms in the house and in the teaching studio. If there is an opportunity I shall discuss a work in progress and will talk about my interests and methods in painting.

Sunlight through autumn beech trees; paint a warp, dye the weft then watch the colours slide over each other during weaving. This simple act of crossing yarns over and under each other to create fabrics by hand is fascinating, and although restrictive, full of possibility.

what to expect: I will be demonstrating weaving and dyeing over the weekend. I use yarns made from natural fibres and dye them myself to weave both functional (scarves, rugs, cushions) and more conceptual pieces. The studio is full of looms, tactile yarns, natural dyepots, samples and finished items.

I have recently discovered clay in the ground at the back of my studio, which I have incorporated into my new work. I continue to explore surface and texture, pushing boundaries both aesthetically and technically. There should always be an element of playfulness.

Techniques involved in my mixed media work include gradually building layers of texture and colour to produce drawings, paintings, sculpture and bookwork. Inspiration comes from my travel to the Orkney islands with extensive research into Norse mythology and also the shamanic elements of Norse tradition.

I am a painter of the Scottish landscape with a focus at the moment on the forests, lochs and skies of Dumfries and Galloway. I paint in oils both figuratively and with leanings towards semi-abstraction. The Canadian Group of Seven artists have been a great inspiration.

The exploration of process is currently what drives my work, looking to incorporate the freedom of mark-making found through quick sketches and life painting into larger compositions. I paint in oils and enjoy the use of a wide variety of mediums in my developmental work.

what to expect: Visitors can expect to find figurative and landscape based compositions, small and large, alongside painted studies, graphite sketches and more detailed drawings. Some sketchbook and further developmental work will be on display. Cards and limited edition giclée prints will also be for sale.

My drawings are humorous observations, connecting themes of colour, shape and pattern, from my garden and washing line to creatures and features in the fields beyond. With my own particular slant I aim to create quirky images full of energy, detail and amusement.

My work is concerned with direct observation of the natural world, primarily through sketchbook studies on the spot, later developing these ideas into larger works in the studio. The connection with wildlife that only drawing from life gives is what sustains me as an artist.

Heather’s work is an emotional response to the natural world. Her choice of colour varies from intense reds to subtle greys and even black. This often sombre palette adds a sense of drama to the finished painting, creating a mysterious mix of reality and abstraction.

My work is primarily illustrative in nature. I make ceramic forms using a variety of techniques such as the wheel, rolled slabs or extruded sections. My themes mainly revolve around the sea, water and movement, with figurative and zoomorphic images.

what to expect: You will be welcomed into a large and busy studio, with work presented at different stages of development. There will be an array of pottery tools, kilns, buckets of glazes, slips, test tiles and sketch books. Finished pieces will be displayed in the showroom and garden.

I developed my unique drawing technique from a background in jewellery design and a passion for animals and nature. My quirky and detailed artwork pieces consist of thousands of tiny circles, dots and lines. Each drawing is unique and has its own process of evolution.

I am currently in my final university year studying Fine Art. My work uses popular and moving imagery to explore our perception of celebrity status. By combining different sources of the everyday image, and representing them in different ways, I attempt to explore the ‘other’.

I make hand thrown stoneware both for display and country kitchenware using glazes that I make from Solway mud, wood ash from our house fire and clay dug from my own land. I also paint local landscape in watercolor.

I am a Textile Designer, specialising in Screen Printing. I am motivated by keeping quality crafts alive, allowing designers to keep their tools close to their heart. With an eclectic style, I use my craft as an extension of our local originality.

what to expect: Creating a very dynamic space, visitors to my space will experience the mirroring processes of craft, art and design. My space will be very interactive; as well as finished pieces, visitors will have a chance to see my tools, ideas through sketchbooks and my work will actually come alive in a fashion show.

I set up Dalton Pottery with Jenny Finch in 1989. Together we make a range of ceramics and run a pottery art cafe. I have been developing my raku techniques over 20 years, focusing mainly on bowls.

what to expect: For Spring Fling I will have a range of small biscuit fired bowls available if visitors would like to pay to glaze, fire and then take a pot home, or they can freely watch the raku firing process which I will be demonstrating throughout the weekend, weather depending.

I am a painter/printmaker. The drawings are either interpreted in a romantic realism or taken into an abstraction. My subject is landscape using the drawings done outside. The work is lively and often colourful. The etchings and wood cuts allow me to be playful and produce art work which can be sold at a reasonable price.

what to expect: I will, if space allows, bring my etching press and demonstrate this method of creating editions of drawings. If you are stuck with your own drawings I am happy to attempt some encouragement. I will be working on a current oil painting.

G3 McGill Duncan Gallery Established in 1978, McGill Duncan Gallery is the oldest privately owned Art Gallery in Dumfries and Galloway. A small bright exterior leads to five attractive exhibiting rooms, each of a different size and character. Jill and Zoë Blamire run this family business and artist Leo Blamire’s Spring Fling studio is located here. Each exhibition is carefully curated and work is displayed with artistic flair and a meticulous eye for detail.

In August, and throughout the year, the gallery sells Scottish and Galloway Paintings from the 19th Century onwards, including work by artists such as William Hanna Clarke 1882-1924, William Mouncey 1852-1901 and David Gauld RSA 1867-1936.

The gallery’s contemporary exhibition programme has a nationwide reputation. Current exhibitors include Sandy Murphy RSW RGI RAI, George Donald RSW RSA, Alexander R Robb, Claire Harrigan RSW and Simon Laurie RSW RGI. There is always an exciting collection of ceramics on display.

Enter Castle Douglas from the A75 and drive down King Street, past the crossroads at the lower end of the street. The gallery is on the left hand side opposite Gardenpine Pet Store and the public toilets.

G4 Clience Studio This bright, friendly gallery and studio in Castle Douglas’ main street shows original paintings, a wide selection of quality giclee signed prints and affordable art-gifts by owner Angela Lawrence. Invigorating or tranquil seascapes and Galloway landscapes full of light and shadows are principal subjects, but other locations, e.g Western Isles, Highlands or imaginary places also feature. The sea itself is a recurrent theme, for which Angela won a Visual Arts Award. Her paintings have an immediacy which brings the freshness and atmosphere of country and coast inside.

Angela, an elected member of the Glasgow Society of Women Artists, is commissioned and exhibits widely, including at the RGI annual exhibitions, Paisley Insitute, and Gracefield Arts Centre Dumfries.

G6 Life’s Little Ironies This new gallery in Whithorn was established in 2012 by artists Tim Gray and Lou McGill. The venue showcases contemporary arts and crafts by established international and national artists and makers, as well as providing an inclusive space for the wider creative community in the Machars. With themed exhibitions throughout the year we also have a regular pop-up gallery space in Wigtown. Paintings, prints, glasswork, jewellery, photography, encaustic art, woodcarving, cards and ceramics are available for sale at both venues.

During Spring Fling 2014 the main gallery will be hosting the May/June exhibition ‘Wings of Desire’ featuring work by a range of artists exploring the language and narrative of cinema. The pop-up gallery in Wigtown will be open throughout the weekend providing a taster of the main exhibition.
