This IPS Trip Safety Review for our annual year-end kayak trip should take less than 7 minutes to review.

After viewing, parents and students must complete:- the Spring Expedition Consent Form (all grades)- the BISK waiver (grade 8 & 9)- Grade 9 Solo Consent Form (grade 9)

All forms are due at the school by Monday June 8, 2015

• To commemorate the end of a very full academic year.• To provide students with an opportunity to take responsibility for themselves in an

expedition context.• To provide progressively challenging experiences for each grade level.

PURPOSE OF THE TRIP

Day One

Grade 6 & 7: Depart from Snug Cove by water taxi to Camp Artaban.

Grade 8 & 9: Depart from Snug Cove and paddle to Halkett Bay.

Day Two

Grade 6 & 7: Camp Programming.

Grade 8 & 9: Kayak to Camp Artaban.

Day Three

Grade 6 & 7: Depart Camp Artaban via water taxi to Snug Cove: final meeting place Sandy Beach (Deep Bay) for Three Bang Salute.

Grade 8 & 9: Depart Camp Artaban via kayaks to Sandy Beach ( Deep Bay) for Three Bang Salute. Final meeting spot at Bowen Island Sea Kayaking (BISK) dock.

WHAT WE DO: ITINERARY

Monday June 15

• Grade 6 & 7 meet at 9:00 am on Government Dock for water taxi.

• Grade 8 & 9 meet at 8:30 am at Bowen Island Sea Kayaking (BISK) Shop.

Tuesday, June 16

• MorningGrade 6 & 7 - camp programming.Grade 8 & 9 - break camp and paddle to Camp Artaban.

• AfternoonGrade 8 & 9 arrive at Camp Artaban.

• EveningDinner with whole school. House games.

WHAT WE DO: ITINERARY

Wednesday June 17

• 10:30 am grade 6 & 7 arrive at Government Dock and are directed to Sandy Beach.

• 11:30 am grade 8 & 9 group arrive at Sandy Beach for Three Bang Salute.

• Grade 6 & 7 group dismissed from Sandy beach after Three Bang Salute.

• Grade 8 & 9 group paddle to BISK dock. Dismissed after kayaks are unpacked and cleaned.

• Off-island students dismissed onto 12:45pm ferry.

SAFETY PROTOCOLS

Communication

• The trip leader will contact IPS daily and leave a message with the following information: location/condition of group and any significant revision of the itinerary.

• The trip leader will keep their cell phone on from 5:00pm-6:00pm to receive any urgent/emergency messages.

• Parents or staff who need to get an emergency message to the trip participants should contact the school (8:30am - 5:00pm).

SAFETY PROTOCOLS

Risk Management:

• Ratio of participants to BISK guides on the water: 6:1

• Ratio of adults to students in camp: 4:1

Pre-trip prep

• All grades: - camping skills training- learnings from prior trips

• Grade 8 & 9: - kayak wet exit training- water safety practices- swim skill assessment

• All adult participants undergo:- safety procedures meeting- student medical alert review

• Safety boat

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

• Students are expected to uphold the commitments of the IPS Membership Charter.

• Students who disobey any rules pertaining to safety, or who significantly detract from the positive experience of fellow students will be sent home at the expense of their parents.

• This is an "unplugged" trip. No cell phones, iPods, etc. Cameras are welcome.

The care and safety of our students is central to the planning and implementation of this trip.

HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT US:

The first step of safety is in your hands - please follow the equipment list verbatim.

Do not pack your child’s bag for them. Use this as an opportunity to collaborate on trip planning.
