THE HARRISBURG SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA’S PUBLICATION FOR MUSIC EDUCATORS AND SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS JANUARY 2012 More Musicians Playing! Last year, many HSO musicians performed in area schools on one spectacular morning. This year, the HSO looks to make even more visits to school music programs, classrooms, and assemblies as we embark on 100 Musicians Playing 2012 on Friday, February 10. As solo performers, duets, trios, and even some larger ensembles, HSO musicians will perform, teach, entertain, and, inspire young people to want to play. Most professional musicians say that it was an encounter with a musician at a young age that inspired them to want to make music. The HSO is happy to provide just such encounters where students can have the immediacy of contact with professional musicians. 100 Musicians Playing is a great opportunity for school groups to connect with a musician or small group of musicians at no cost to the school. Please contact Alice Anne Schwab, Director of Education at the HSO office aschwab@ harrisburgsymphony.org if you are interested in participating in 100 Musicians Playing. Spring Young Person’s Concert April 13, 2012 One of the highlights of the Masterworks season at the HSO is our Young Person’s Concerts, with one held in the fall and another in the spring. This season’s spring concert takes place on Friday, April 13, 2012 and it will feature music of iconic characters: Aaron Copland’s Billy the Kid (Suite) and Richard Strauss’ epic, Don Quixote. Young Person’s Concerts are a gift to our community’s students from the Hathaway Family Foundation. There is no cost for tickets to the Young Person’s Concerts and all elementary, intermediate, and middle school students are invited to attend. You may sign up now for the April 13, 2012 YPC on the HSO website. VIOLA MASTER CLINIC WITH JULIUS WIRTH, HSO PRINCIPAL VIOLIST

High School-age student musicians who play the viola in an orchestra setting will be interested in the HSO’s Master Clinic with HSO Principal Violist, Julius Wirth, Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 9:00 am at Cumberland Valley High School. Cumberland Valley’s Orchestra Director, Jennifer Anderson, has graciously offered to host this exciting Master Clinic to assist in developing viola sectional play within the context of the string area and the wider orchestra ensemble. A maximum of five student violists from each attending orchestra will be eligible to play with Mr. Wirth in the Master Clinic. Others of us will be able to participate as observers at the session, which is expected to last approximately 1

1/2 hours.

For more information on the Viola Master Clinic, please call or email Alice Anne Schwab, [email protected] or 717-545-5527. There is no cost to participate.
