Making an Impact in SAOn May 7th this year Second Chances SA was awarded $20,000 by Impact100

SA at their inaugural awards night in recognition of the work we do for underprivileged children. We made it into the top four from 31 charities and speaking before 350 attendees, our Chief Executive Helen Glanville described our vision for a better future for our PK’s. What an incredible experience and an honour to be a part of. Thank you Impact100 SA.

Our very own in-prison volunteer Chris Johnson doubles as an art teacher at Mobilong Prison each Tuesday. He proudly launched a SALA exhibition at Sunset Rock Uniting Church in August where he explained the story behind the sculptures and 22 items ‘from the inside’. The expression of art for prisoners is

a meaningful activity where they can express and develop their artistic gifts. We applaud DCS for their support in this.

Camp Director Roo says, “Summer is the time to hit the beach and so the gang of lads will head to Goolwa and get some tips from experienced surfers and then try to carve it up on their own boards. We’ll also spend a day abseiling on The Bluff with the waves of the Southern Ocean at our backs. At night we’ll talk about the challenges the boys faced and what they discovered about themselves.”

When it comes to action and exciting developments we’ve been riding a big wave of perpetual motion, grateful to our donors and friends for helping us roll forward. We reached our half way mark end July with the PK Family Care Team submitting their 18 month Impact Report review for 2016 funding. There were some impressive infographics on how we’re impacting children by preventing them from entering the juvenile prison system. We’ve given them new sports and school uniforms where needed, pointed them towards vocational training, funded much needed driving lessons to get to TAFE training and helped an autistic boy with learning through sessions with a Labrador and as a result his attention span and relational skills have improved. His teacher and mother are ecstatic. All this because our friends at Ansvar

Insurance, Hope Central and you have believed in us. I love to report good news. The good news is more volunteers are stepping up for training to visit prisoners, more

volunteers are working in our Furniture Showroom/Warehouse and more volunteers are baking for our monthly Op Shop cake days. Second Chances SA is here to stay committed solely to South Australians needing a ‘second chance’.

Four Down, Four To GoOctober Teen Girls

Camp Director Helen says, “The Teen Girls Camp is heading North over the weekend of 16 - 18th October. We will spend time around the beautiful Barossa Valley, taking in the sights, sounds and food. We will get active on bikes and walking and experiment with yummy ingredients from the Barossa in our cooking!”

Second Chances SA in SA PrisonsNew Project AnnouncedPort Lincoln Reintegration Worker

As from 1 July Andrew Cornell-Trapp commenced a new one year part-time position called Port Lincoln Reintegration Worker with an Attorney General’s Crime Prevention Grant. Andrew is well known to the prison and Community Corrections staff as well as in the local community. He now has contacts for placing Port Lincoln residents into suitable Eyre Peninsula accommodation. Where he can, he’ll be referring clients to local social networks to help them adjust back into the community. This project will assist Port Lincoln prisoners reintegrate into the community with housing, work and volunteering and social engagement opportunities. This is real crime prevention.

Over a 12 month period finishing in May, Gregg closely supported 19 participants thanks to a DCS Community Grant. In summary he writes, ‘People who make it through the system have good solid plans. Have good support networks in place which assist in breaking old associations. They get professional help to deal with underlying factors of abuse and or addiction issues. Having meaningful work/activity/interests is a precursor to successful reintegration after prison. Many men leaving the prison system lack skills, lack passion, direction and any hope that things can be different.’

‘I would like to thank Second Chances SA for the opportunity to work in this area for 12 months and to the SA Department for Correctional Services for the community grant. I firmly

believe many of the people I worked with based on past evidence, would have breached earlier and many would not have made it this far, without the support of this project and Second Chances SA Services and volunteer assistance.’

The participants were in general terms, those who had significant issues in the past in staying out of prison. Unless more resources are assigned in a serious and determined manner, engaging community people with a genuine care factor to assist those who struggle to settle, nothing will change. They need a personal plan with hope and real help. Our prisons will continue to be overcrowded with people who simply need a little help and common sense at their most vulnerable exit points into the community.’

Our Valued Volunteers Prison Chaplaincy Services

Having been in the job of Principal Chaplain for almost five years now I thought it was time I expressed my gratitude and support for the sterling work your Volunteers do in the prisons. The general population will never see or know of the self-sacrifice and dedicated service that your workers give to the prisoners so I want you to know that someone notices and I am very thankful. It is the small and practical aids that your workers give that makes life for some just that much more bearable. These volunteers faithfully go into eight prisons every week; Mobilong, Cadell Training Centre, Port Lincoln, Mount Gambier, Adelaide Remand Centre, Yatala Labour Prison, Adelaide Womens Prison soon and the Adelaide Pre-Release Centre. Camp Director Benno says,“After their underground caving adventures in Winter, Spring will be a time to enjoy the sun on our backs as we embark on a 2-night kayaking journey down Katarapko Creek. Being completely self-sufficient will be a new experience, one which we hope will build confidence and resilience amongst the young men. Our talking circle conversations around the campfire each night will give us a chance to discuss the day’s events and what we’ve learned.”

Camp Director Yolanda says, “Our PK Mentoring Camps give the kids the chance to experience a variety of activities and learn to develop their skills, grow in character and build relationships in a supportive, fun environment. The kids really look forward to them and especially feel a great sense of achievement when they engage in activities that are outside their comfort zone.”

In a typical week ten dedicated, fully accredited Second Chances SA in-prison volunteers, respond to written requests from prisoners to help them with banking, storage of property, contact with family and helps with accommodation, furniture and clothing from our Op Shops. The average weekly number of prisoner contacts reach around 90; donating an average of 65.5 hours per week. These activities take place on a weekly basis in eight of the nine SA prisons. These ‘helps’ mean the world to a prisoner struggling to trust and without anyone who cares.
