4District 13 | 2015 Spring Conference4

Dear Fellow Toastmasters and Welcome Guests,

Welcome to the District 13 Spring 2015 Conference, Toastmasters: Simply the Best. It is our hope that when you return home from this conference you will be uplifted, excited and ready to reach for the STARS in your Toastmasters Club and in your life outside of Toastmasters.

I encourage you to really connect with the people you meet here and stay in contact. You never know the connections you make here, may change your life. I have seen Toastmasters acquaintances become lifelong friendships, business partners and even family. I can personally say, the people I have met though this organization have completely changed my life in so many ways. I have to say, they really are “Simply the Best.”

A special thank you to Lieutenant Governor Education and Training, Josué Batista and conference chairs, Tracy and Virgil Eichenlaub with their team for all of their work the past several months coordinating the details of this conference, from food to fun, tablecloths to timers, and speakers to spreadsheets; the details take coordination and consideration. There are teams of people that have taken care of all the details from handling registration, promotion and program

development, sponsorships, educational workshops, Friday fun night, gift baskets, set up and of course contests. They have put in countless hours planning and preparing for you to be able to have the best possible experience here this weekend. Please make sure to thank the volunteers for their service. Thank you to our keynote speaker, Sharon Anita- Hill, DTM, ID for taking the time to attend this conference and for sharing your deep and wide knowledge of Toastmasters with us. We appreciate you. I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage you become a Theory of One STAR by STriving to reaching one communication award, Achieving one leadership award and Recruiting a new member. There are 66 days left in this Toastmasters year to reach our goals as individuals, as clubs and as a district. I want you to become the best you can possibly be as a communicator and as a leader. I also want to see District 13 flourish, to be Simply the Best! What is great is that those two things are totally in alignment with each other. Our success is like a race, in that we are striving to do our best as an individual and push through when we sometimes don’t want to push through. A relay, in that we have to rely on each other and pass the baton on to our teammates; and though we can’t run their leg of the race, we can cheer them on while they run. A marathon, in that it takes some time to prepare and complete. A sprint, in that the time is shorter than we may want, and can leave us breathless in the pursuit of our goal. A triathlon, in that it takes three areas to become well-rounded. (communication, leadership and people). So I now ask you, will you run with me, all the way to the end of this race? Let’s hold nothing back! Let’s Lead the Way and Leave a Legacy of success in our homes, our work, our community. Wishing you Simply the Best,

Melissa McGavick, DTMDistrict 13, District Governor, [email protected]

Lieutenant Governor Education & TrainingGreetings Fellow Toastmasters and Friends, As your District 13 Lieutenant Governor Education and Training, it is a great pleasure to welcome you to our District 13 2015 Spring Conference. The conference’s theme, “Toastmasters: Simply the Best!”, is more relevant now than ever before. It is not about what we are, it is about what we do; not about what we have, but what we give away; not about what we know or where we stand on some issues, the “when” of our timing, or the “why”; instead, it is the “how” we relate to others what really matters.

Toastmasters is the single most significant movement of our time. Toastmasters is connecting people all over the world under a common goal: becoming the best communicators and leaders. We all have the opportunity to enhance our lives and the lives of others around us by using Toastmasters’ program, the very best!

A significant number of dedicated and passionate Toastmasters and friends are working very hard to make this event possible, thank you so much! They have prepared an unique and relevant program filled with workshops and activities in direct alignment with our shared values and interests. I also hope that the conference will be a remarkable opportunity for you to meet and network with your fellow Toastmasters and guests.

Our very special guest, International Director, Sharon Anita Hill, is here to enlighten us and inspire us. Sharon, thank you for coming to our conference!

As the district officer responsible for educational strategies, I want to hear ideas and suggestions from you. There are several opportunities for becoming involved as a volunteer and leader during the last three month of this Toastmsasters International year 2014-2015. Welcome again! By being here, you are making our District 13 Spring Conference, “Toastmasters: Simply the Best”, a sure success! Cheers!

Fellow Toastmasters and guests, welcome to our Spring Conference in Washington, PA. I believe in making the Toastmaster experience available to all who are interested in participating; and I want all Toastmaster members to have a positive, supportive and beneficial experience in their club. Our District Conferences are designed to enhance the Toastmaster experience, and provide members an opportunity to learn, connect with others, and have fun as they continue their Toastmaster journey.

Toastmaster Conferences are also a time to celebrate our accomplishments and be inspired to finish the Toastmaster year strong and achieve our goals. I hope you will be able to join your fellow members in celebrating the results of the hard work that they have done, and I hope you will be inspired to reach your next goal whether it’s giving one more speech, taking on a new leadership opportunity or sharing the experience by inviting a new guest to a club meeting.

Enjoy the conference!

Understanding andAppreciating GenerationalDifferences

Each generation has specific values and preferences that are unique to members of that generation. Differences between the generations can lead to misunderstanding, resentment, and dislike.

Objective: At the end of this discussion, you will know:

• The four generations• How each generation’s thinking was

shaped and how to appreciate each other.

Michael Staropoli, ACB is in his third year as a Toastmaster. He is an Advance Communicator Bronze. In addition, he is currently serves as the Area 11 Governor, the Immediate Past President of the Aspinwall Club, and a member of both the Aspinwall Club and the upcoming new Oakmont Club. Michael has over 28 years of experience in sales and management and works in the Dale Carnegie’s Communication and Leadership Sales Division.

Dawn Staropoli, CL joined Toastmasters in April 2013. When I first joined Toastmasters, it was to overcome my fear of speaking in front of others. I would visibly shake, get nauseated, and feel as if I was going to faint. In less than two years, I have overcome most of my fears of speaking in front of others. I still get nervous but I don’t want to faint. In the almost two years with Toastmasters, I have completed my Competent Leader, become a coach for another club and have become involved in starting a new club.

Dawn and Mike Staropoli from Aspinwall Toastmasters will be presenting a two-part workshop on mentoring. Part one will focus on the benefits of mentoring and be presented by Mike. During Part two, Dawn will share with you ways to implement a successful and strong mentoring program in your club.

Great public speakers know how to engage people’s attention and deliver their message in a way that is clear, impactful, and

motivating. Enabling them to do all of this and more is their ability to tell compelling, purposeful stories.

You too can command this ability—and you don’t even have to search far and wide for stories to tell. Your life experience is a gold mine of story material that you can draw upon to bring almost any message to life. You simply need to learn how to mine that gold and mold it into a form that conveys your message.

Come learn from professional speaking coach Sam Wieder how to harness your story power. Discover how to use your personal stories to captivate, educate, illuminate, and motivate just about anyone.
