It included the painting of icons and the decoration of churches with frescoes and mosaics. The Byzantine style basically ended with the fall of Constantinople to the Turks in 1453—at which time many fled to Italy. However, the Byzantine influence on Early Italian Renaissance painting was profound. Join us as we look at this remarkable tradition—and its articulation in the work of some of Italy’s greatest artists.
