NASA InternshipNASA Internship
Jonathan Catch the Bear, a student studying Business Administration at Sitting Bull College, was given the opportunity of a lifetime. He was offered an internship at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California, for the summer of 2019. His participation in NASA started with NASA MITTIC (Minority University Research & Education Project (MUREP) Innovation Tech Transfer Idea Competition) in late fall of 2018.
A team from Sitting Bull College was given the opportunity to write a spinoff concept paper taking a NASA Internet Protocol (IP) Technology and describing how to utilize said technology in an alternate way and how to commercialize it. From the MITTIC Competition, nine internship opportunities were offered to competing students. Catch the Bear applied for the internship, and much to his surprise, was one of the nine students chosen to intern.
During his internship, Catch the Bear was chosen as the Business Office Operations Intern to work in the Program Management Office of NASA’s Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer. This office is one of the federal government’s largest sources of early stage/high-risk funding for start-ups and small businesses. Catch the Bear’s tasks as an intern were to shadow the operations work stream lead, assist in tasks that supported the goals, the objectives, and the work stream of the Program Management Office Business Office Operations, and to make the best use of the workforce, office space, and tools.
As an intern for the Business Office Operations, Catch the Bear also worked with the Knowledge Management, Policy Management, Office Operations, Program/Employee Recognition, and Safety and Compliance programs. This internship really helped prepare Catch the Bear for his future, as he plans on owning and operating his own business once he graduates college.

In May of 2019, the Sitting Bull College Lay Advocate/Paralegal program held its first mock trial in the Standing Rock Tribal Court in connection with the Criminal Justice Trial Techniques class. SRST Assistant Chief Judge, Erin Shanley, served as adjunct instructor for the course and also presided as judge over the proceedings. Several students from other Criminal Justice classes participated as defendant, witnesses, arresting officers, and defense and prosecuting attorneys. The jury was composed of members of the Standing Rock community who volunteered their time to participate.
The mock trial was intended to allow students to apply the skills they learned in the Lay Advocate/Paralegal program through hands-on experience in a real court setting.
Pictured left to right: Bobby Three Legs, Benny Kasto, and Celeste Long Elk.
Alana Cosay, a Native American student from McLaughlin, South Dakota, was chosen to be an American Indian College Fund (AICF) Ambassador. The American Indian College Fund Ambassador Program is established to create a mutually-supportive relationship between the College Fund and selected scholarship recipients to serve as ambassadors and enhance professional skills. Program elements are designed to strengthen personal and professional voice and skills through active representation and reflection of the mission of the College Fund.
As an ambassador, Cosay received the opportunity for a Pendleton photoshoot in Chinle, Arizona. Cosay had advice for Sitting Bull College students, “I encourage future and current students to apply for scholarships and ambassador positions so they can have the experiences I have received thus far.” She is presently an SBC junior studying Native American Studies.

The newly revived SBC Rodeo Club successfully held their first rodeo on September 27th at Prairie Knights Casino Rodeo Arena. Events included sheep riding, barrel racing, steer riding, bareback riding, saddle bronc, team roping and young guns bull riding.
The club is hoping to host more rodeo in the summer of 2020, and sent out the following message: “Thank you to everyone who helped or participated in our fall round up rodeo.”
The Geek Oyate Club’s first endeavor was to facilitate workshops and presentations to high school students. Presentation topics included coding, spreadsheets, presentations, movie editing, and the overall importance of learning technology in today’s society. In addition to technology, members talked about factors that motivated them to attend college with the hopes of inspiring the audience to do the same.
Students in the club were proud of their accomplishments and the experience they gained from presenting their technology workshops. One student said, "I am proud that I tried something new, and I enjoyed the social aspect of the event."
The GOC plans to expand their outreach to additional schools and will be hosting club fundraisers in the near future. Members encourage anyone interested in technology to join the Geek Oyate Club.

Sitting Bull College has received a grant to enhance its agricultural activities. The grant is Outreach and Assistance for Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers and Veteran Farmers and Ranchers.
This grant will assist Sitting Bull College in enhancing its services to its agricultural community. Events include several community events in which United States Department of Agriculture programs and services are presented to farmers and ranchers in the Standing Rock community. Agencies asked to present include Farm Service Agency, Rural Development, Natural Resources Conservation Service and Northern Great Plains Research Center. Representatives from these USDA agencies will discuss their programs and services available and answer questions from the event participants.
The grant also supports youth agricultural experiences. High school and middle school students, and young adults are provided the opportunity to explore agriculture with financing from the Oyate Community Development Cooperation (OCDC) for their small agricultural enterprises. The loans are $5,000 or less, and students must have both a sponsor and a mentor to be eligible for a loan package. Parents frequently take both roles but others can assume both of those roles. The college will work closely with the student, the sponsors, and mentors to develop a successful plan and operation. The grant gives students opportunities to experience agriculture as a way of life and as a business.
