The Wallace State Lifelong Learning Institute (WaLLi) is for individuals aged 50 and up and offers a unique learning community that is life-enriching, that provides opportunities to engage with new people, and offers intellectually stimulat-ing events and travel. Each semester there are a wide range of activities scheduled such as cultural events, arts and crafts, movies, day trips, luncheons, lectures, games, a book club,

and events highlighting our local communities. Other offerings may include computer and technology courses, health-related topics and health fairs, competitions and overnight excursions. Use of the Wallace State Wellness Center and gym is also included as a component of the WaLLi program. Courses are taught by volunteers and instructors who share their knowl-edge and passions.

Senior Adult Scholarship ProgramAs stated in the WSCC College Catalog (2016-17, p. 43): “Students meeting institutional admission requirements, who are 60 years of age or older, are eligible for the Senior Adult Scholarship Program, which covers tuition only. The scholarship can be used for transitional and credit courses leading to an associate degree, diplo-ma, or certificate. Courses may also be audited for no college credit or grade. Repeat courses are not eligible. Students must pay fees by the published deadline each semester.”Sample fees, based on the 2016 Tuition and Fee Schedule, as follows (WSCC Catalog 2016-17, p. 28):

Registration & PoliciesTo allow as many members as possible to participate, the fol-lowing policies are in effect for the WaLLI program:• Only register for activities you plan to attend.• If your plans change, promptly contact the WaLLi Office at

256.352.7818 to withdraw. • Members may register for only one course per any given

day/time slot.• Only participants registered for the activity will receive

communication from the WaLLi Office or instructor.• Health fairs, WSCC programs such as musical and theatre

productions, Cullman Community Concert events, and the WSCC home athletic events do not require registration. Just show your WaLLi membership card at the door for free admission.

• Credit/debit card is the preferred method of payment; however, we do accept cash and checks.

• In order for scheduled classes to be held, there must be a minimum number of ten people registered for the work-shop or activity.

• Activities requiring transportation require a minimum of 30 participants. Registration will remain open until one week prior to the date of the event and, if there are fewer than the required registrants, it will be canceled. Anyone registered will be notified prior to the event.

• For trips, you will not be on the official registration list un-til you complete and submit the required paperwork and

fee (if applicable) for the event. We will not hold seats for anyone without required forms or payment on file.

• Classes and trips will be filled on a first come-first served basis and, once filled, everyone else will be waitlisted. If we reach the required number of participants to make an-other section and are able to secure the instructor again, we will add another section and notify you of the new date and time of the workshop/event. Trips will require 30 people for another bus to be scheduled and will occur on the same day/time.

• Any activities requiring an additional fee must be paid prior to formal registration for the event. No refunds will be issued. If the activity is canceled by the college then participants will be issued a refund. Should a participant need to cancel after the refund date then they may find someone to fill their slot; however, the participant is responsible for any registration fee monetary exchange between them and the substitute.

• Unless otherwise noted in the schedule, all classes are held in the Wellness Center and all buses for the trips load in the Coliseum parking lot.

• In case of inclement weather check local media broad-casts or the Wallace State website for closing or delay announcement. If the college is closed then all activities are canceled.

Week 1 (Jan. 7): The Habits of Eating Healthy Made SimpleWhat we eat matters but so do some other key things. We’ll talk about some ways to help you know how to choose healthier and we’ll help you calculate how much you should be eating to maintain your weight or lose a few pounds moving forward.Week 2 (Jan. 14): The Habits of WaterGetting in the habit of drinking water can bring a lot of health benefits. Get tips to drink more water to keep hydrat-ed all day long.Week 3 (Jan. 28): The Habits of SleepSleep is nature’s nurse. SELF DEFENSE CLASS FOR WOMENFriday, Jan. 18, 12 p.m.-2:30 p.m.WSCC Cheer Room, Wellness Center

The main focus of this class is to teach you basic skills and what you need to know to survive an attack from someone bigger and stronger than you. The training deals with real life scenarios and everyone trains at a level appropriate for their age and fitness level, and advances at their own pace. Due to the requirements of the training methods, this class is for women only. This class will be physically demanding. Wear comfortable clothing and athletic shoes. Class is limited to 25 participants.

In this course, led by a certified Wellness Advocate, you will

learn about the fundamentals, benefits, and safe usage of a variety of essential oils. Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at any time. Instructors from the WSCC Emergency Medical Services de-partment will show us when – and how – to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) and basic CPR techniques that can help you save a life. Raydonna Sims from the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service will show us how to make rugs using cotton material and old sheets. Participants should bring 100% cotton sheets (must be cotton) in colors of choice. You should also bring a sack lunch as you will be working through lunch. This is a Cullman Community Concert Association event but is free to WaLLi members – you must show your WaLLi membership card for admission.

Sporting Events

WaLLi members receive free admission to all college games played at home – just show your card for admission. This does not apply to away games or tournaments/sporting events hosted by other groups (Ex: local and regional high school basketball tournaments). Day TripsMERCEDES BENZ VISITOR CENTER TOUR

Wednesday, Jan. 23, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.Vance, Tuscaloosa

We will visit the only Mercedes-Benz museum outside of Germany which has several vintage Mercedes vehicles on display. The Visitor Center is an evolving, interactive tour through some of Mercedes-Benz’s greatest innovations and future automotive technological concepts. It includes vehicles ranging from a model of the 1886 Benz Patented Motor Car, recognized as the world’s first car, to the brand new 2016 GLE Coupe SUV. The museum also features iconic, classic Mer-cedes-Benz automobiles, authentic Mercedes-Benz race cars, a Mercedes-Benz “peerless safety” exhibit, and a gift shop. After the tour we head to Tuscaloosa for lunch (at your expense) at The Cypress Inn. This iconic restaurant serves Southern family recipes in a beautiful waterfront setting along the banks of the beautiful Black Warrior River. After lunch there will be a mystery stop before heading back to WSCC. Transportation fee is $5 and the bus will depart from the Coliseum parking lot. Completion of travel forms/waiver is required for this outing. Limited to 52 participants.

We travel to Yesterday’s Events venue in Athens, Alabama for lunch and live entertainment. Silvery Moon will perform a Big Band show. The $20 fee includes transportation, lunch, and an hour of live entertainment. The bus will depart from the Coliseum parking lot. Completion of travel forms/waiver is required for this outing. Limited to 52 participants.

CELEBRATING NATIONAL POPCORN DAYFriday, March 8, 10:30 a.m.Kernel Kullman, Cullman, Ala.

At Kernel Kullman in the Cullman Warehouse District, we will sample up to three different flavors of popcorn. As you walk in the door of the shop, to music of the swing era, you will see rows of nostalgic candy, glass bottled soft drinks sitting in ice, homemade fudge, and over 70 delicious flavors of gourmet popcorn. After you have your fill of popcorn you may want to hang around the Warehouse District and visit the unique shops, bakery or have lunch at Mae’s Food Hall. Everyone will meet at Kernel Kullman; transportation is not provided.

AMERICAN HISTORY TRIPWednesday, March 13, 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.Columbiana, Montevallo

Due to the popularity of this trip last semester we are offering it again. WaLLi members on the waitlist from November will be offered the opportunity for the first seats and then it will be opened to everyone else. Our journey today takes us to the Karl C. Harrison Museum of George Washington and the Shel-by County Historical Society Museum in Columbiana, AL. The GW museum holds more than 1,000 artifacts from the Wash-ington family and their descendants. Did you know that Shelby County is older than the State of Alabama? We will learn many interesting facts about this area and the state. After these tours we will stop for a buffet lunch (at your expense – around

$8.50) at the University of Montevallo Banquet Hall. We then travel to the American Village in Montevallo. Highlights of the campus include Washington Hall, inspired by George Wash-ington’s beloved Mount Vernon; the Colonial Courthouse; the Colonial Chapel, inspired by one of America’s oldest churches, Bruton Parish Church of Williamsburg, Virginia; and a full-sized replica of the Oval Office, including an exact replica of the Res-olute desk used by most Presidents since Rutherford Hayes. The newest addition to campus is the National Veterans Shrine and Register of Honor, dedicated to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. Participants will be respon-sible for their lunch and will pay the $9 entry fee at American Village. Please note that you need exactly $9 in cash and that any Veteran is admitted at no charge. Due to museum space, this trip is limited to 50.

DISCOVERING HANCEVILLETuesday, March 19, 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m.Downtown Hanceville

It’s often said we never know what’s in our “backyard”. Hanceville has grown over the past couple of years and offers dining, shopping and unique gift stores. Everyone will park at the Mission Possible Thrift Store and then we will have a guided walking tour of the businesses – antiques, furniture, clothing, a unique barber shop, a gaming facility and more. After the tour you may want to hang around and have lunch at one of the local restaurants including Bulldog Country Cookin’, Southern Mix, Luna’s BBQ or Hancev-ille Drug Store (they have great ice cream and banana splits!).

PICKIN’ AND THRIFTIN’ TRIPTuesday, April 9, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.Jasper

Today we head to the Jasper area to look for antique and thrift store finds. Along the way we will stop for lunch (at your own expense). Transportation fee is $5 and the bus will depart from the Coliseum parking lot. Completion of travel forms/waiver is required for this outing. Limited to 52 participants.

Isn’t it frustrating when you are ready to weed-eat or play lumberjack and your equipment doesn’t work? This three-part workshop will help you learn basic troubleshooting and repairs for small engines (weed eaters, chain saws, lawnmowers, etc.). Class limited to 20 participants. Instructor: Jason Bynum

Getting to Know Your Engine (February 5)We will show you how to decipher an Owner’s Manual, review safety, and learn basic terminology and engine parts. If you have a manual for the equipment you want to repair bring it with you to the class. GUN SAFETY WORKSHOPTuesday, March 12, 8:30 a.m.-11 a.m.WaLLi Classroom, Wellness Center

This class is designed to present the basic knowledge and skills and explains the attitude necessary for the safe handling, cleaning and storing guns in the home. The course will also familiarize participants with safe gun handling procedures and guidelines for storing pistols, rifles, and shotguns in the home.
