Painting the Pearly Gates Pinkby Brooke Josler, Community Engagement

D orothy Wallace foisy lived a full and genuine life. Born in Monongahela, Pennsylvania June 26th of 1915,

she passed gently and peacefully away in her daughter’s home December 19, 2018 at 103 years old. Dorothy was a fearless woman whose presence touched everyone around her. As she loved to swim, dance, write poetry, sew, and paint, she truly was an artist at heart. It was not uncommon for her children to come home to a redecorated house, replete with new paint, reupholstered furniture, and fresh decorations. Her beautiful poetry and paintings capture nature’s intricacies and the love that she had for her family.

As Dorothy was very open-minded, she encouraged her family to follow their hearts. She allowed her daughter, Lynn, to play the drums, cheerlead, and to explore many different places of worship, despite some concerns from others. Dorothy and her husband, Bill Wallace, kept a lively home and gave their children an idyllic childhood. Neighborhood children and community members such as the local doctor and the mayor would frequently be over for dinner and entertainment.

Unfortunately, one of Dorothy and Bill’s sons, Kim, was killed during his service in the US Navy. His death was extremely difficult for Dorothy and her family. There were few options for grief counseling, and the family suffered through grief for years. During this time, Lynn moved to Orange, California to attend college. When Lynn wanted to participate in the Semester at Sea program, where students circle the world and take classes on a ship, Lynn’s father was unsure. He was worried about her safety, thinking of Kim’s death. But Dorothy supported her decision, encouraging her to see the world.

After Lynn returned from the Semester at Sea program, Dorothy and Bill decided to move to Orange, California as well.

This move helped the family to recover from grieving Kim’s death, and soon Dorothy made her mark in California. Dorothy and Bill managed rental apartment properties and came to know many people, developing a community of friends.

After Bill’s death in 1976, Dorothy began to travel the globe. Her son, Scott Wallace, was an airline pilot in Saudi Arabia. He

took her on adventures all over the world. Everywhere Dorothy went she would meet people who took good care of her. Scott

and his family moved to Florida, and Dorothy followed to be closer to him.

She met James Foisy while she was out dancing. He played in an orchestra, and she would attend his concerts. They married and greatly enjoyed each other through travel and music. that were in daycare at the school as well as for migrant farm workers’ children. Dorothy purchased her fabric and supplies from Joann Fabrics. Lynn’s husband,

Morris, contacted Joann’s to share Dorothy’s story with them. They were so impressed they sent her a $1000 gift certificate. When Lynn made a video of Dorothy sewing and thanking Joann’s for the fabric, Joann’s posted it on their Facebook page, and it got over 270,000 views!

After James died, Lynn and her sister, Dee Wallace, moved Dorothy to Corvallis to spend more time with them. She first stayed at Conifer House, where Lynn received the friendship, love and support from the "Conifer House Daughters," Sylvia, Christie, Ava, Carol, Jenna and Anny. Eventually, Lynn and Morris moved her into their home to take care of her person-ally. Though she had developed dementia, she was still very alert and energetic! Dee, Scott, and Scott’s daughter Noell were able to celebrate her 102nd birthday with her.

Lynn’s children inherited Lynn and Dorothy’s artistic streak; Skye is a traveling muralist and Amoris is a documentarian. Amoris worked with Lumina 10 years ago to make a short promotional video. In watching the video, Lynn learned that many people call hospice when their loved one is very close

to death. Lynn learned that hospice can support patients in many ways before that point, so she contacted Lumina to get the ball rolling. Even though Dorothy did not qualify for hospice at that time, they set up the paperwork and intro-duced Dorothy to the hospice care team. When Dorothy was ready for hospice in mid-2018, she was already familiar with the process and had no fear of the team coming to her home.

Dorothy and her family very much appreciated the services that Lumina provided, and likewise, Dorothy was very well loved among the Lumina staff. Nicole, Dorothy’s nurse, responded very quickly to the needs of the family. The social worker, Lina, was also very attentive to their situation—Lynn said she was there to support her and Morris as much as Dorothy. Loreena, the bath aide, provided bed baths to keep Dorothy comfortable. Lumina sent over Mary Hughes to cut Dorothy’s hair and paint her nails. She also cut Lynn’s hair while she was there! Additionally, volunteers Sharon and Rose visited with Dorothy while Lynn could run errands. Lynn was incredibly grateful, and she found the team to be very intelligent and sympathetic to what she was going through. She describes Lumina staff as warm and caring. “These delightful people all became part of our family!” she wrote in a message to Lumina.

Chaplains Lynn E. and Sandy were also impactful for Dorothy as they offered spiritual support. Harpists Laura and Beatrice came often to play for her. As Dorothy was Scottish, some-times Laura would play Scottish licks much to her delight. Lumina also sent an artist, Liz, to paint with Dorothy. Though Dorothy had stopped painting about 5 years prior, she picked

it right back up again! She painted lovely natural scenes of wildflowers and mountains.

During this time, Lynn’s sister, Dee, would help provide breaks for Lynn and Morris by taking Dorothy to her home for a few days. She was very supportive. Dorothy was on Lumina service for about six months. Several times Nicole and the team thought that Dorothy was very close to death, but she would perk back up again within a few days! In late November, she voiced to Lynn, “I can’t wait to see what’s next!” As time progressed, she began to see her children’s father, Bill, and her son, Kim. She saw children and dogs in the house that others couldn’t see. Dorothy asked, “What’s happening to me?” And Lynn responded that she thought she was getting ready to cross over. Dorothy said, “But I

don’t want to leave you and the baby,” which confused Lynn at the time.

On December 19, 2018, Dorothy died peacefully in her home. In the weeks following, Lynn’s daughter Amoris announced that she was pregnant with her first child. Dorothy’s words about not wanting to leave the baby came flooding back to Lynn. The baby’s due date is near Dorothy’s birthday. For Christmas, family members each received a painting that Dorothy had made with the help of Liz, the visiting artist. Art has a special place with the Wallace and Walker family; it connects them all. Before Dorothy died, she said, “When I get to heaven, I’m going to paint the pearly gates pink!” and it’s easy to envision her now painting the gates and rearranging all of heaven’s furniture.

Lumina's offices are moving!

Y ou may have noticed the “Future Home of Lumina” banner on the building at the corner of 4th Street and

B Avenue in downtown Corvallis. That’s right! We will be moving to our hospice community center in the heart of downtown Corvallis this summer. We have outgrown our current location and will be selling the building. Watch for details on our open house later this year. We want to show off our new space.

tax advantage for retirees: make a Qualified charitable Distribution from Your ira

T axpayers aged 70.5 years or older may make a qualified charitable distribution from their IRA directly to Lumina

in lieu of taking a required minimum distribution from that IRA each year. Using a qualified charitable distribution enables one to reduce their taxable income by the amount donated, up to 50 percent of their adjusted gross income. Making a qualified charitable distribution may also enable some

taxpayers to lower or eliminate capital gains taxes they would otherwise pay if the required minimum distribution from their IRA would have moved them into a higher tax bracket.

There are other ways to maximize your charitable giving for all ages such as gifting appreciated stock to avoid capital gains tax or creating a donor-advised fund (DAF).

See your tax advisor for specific strategies for your chari-table giving. You will find additional ways to give to Lumina by visiting www.luminahospice.org/get-involved/donate.
