AtlantaBy Circle-Let La Royce Morgan Thompson

Greetings from Atlanta ! ! !

Our own Azira Hill was recently honored by Governor Nathan Deal as one of ten recipientsof the Governor’s Awards in arts and humanities.

Twenty-five years ago, a group of Atlanta commu-nity leaders set out to find a way to attract moretalented young musicians of color into classicalmusic careers.

Led by Azira G. Hill, one of the longest-running,year-round musical education diversity programswas born, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra TalentDevelopment Program (TDP)

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra cares deeply about advancing the vitality and relevanceof symphonic music. An important step on this journey is creating a stronger associationbetween the musicians and the communities we serve. Since its inception, the TDP hasserved talented young musicians, and the entire field of classical music, by providing thehighest level of musical training to hundreds of African-American and Latino students.Nearly 100 fellows have graduated from the program and gone on to attend top musicschools, including The Juilliard School, Curtis Institute of Music, Manhattan School of Musicand the Peabody Institute, to name but a few. This strong educational foundation has ledmany to careers in orchestras, teaching and performance. Kudos Azira!

Congresswoman and Circle-Let Eddie Bernice Johnsonelected Chairwoman , House Science, Space,

and Technology Committee

Circle-Let and Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson shares in her own words:

In my 26 years in Congress, I have only been in the majority forsix years. After January 3rd, I can now say I was in the majority forat least eight. As the 116th Congress was sworn in, we representthe most diverse Congress in the history of our nation. A fact ofwhich I am very proud.

On January 4, I had the honor of being elected chairwoman of theHouse Science, Space, and Technology Committee by my Lead-ership and Democratic colleagues. It is a distinct privilege to as-cend to this position as I am the first African-American and thefirst woman to chair this Committee. I have been a member of the

Science Committee since I was first seated in Congress in 1993,and over the years, I have seen the positive impact it can createwhen it’s used constructively. It’s a committee I like to call “thedoor to the future,” because it has jurisdiction over all policiesdealing with domestic and international science, technology, stan-dards and competitiveness, funds NASA, space exploration, andmuch of our nation’s non-defense Federal research and develop-ment portfolio.

One policy area which we cover, that is perhaps more importantthan any other area in the committee’s jurisdiction, is funding re-search into climate change. We know the threat to our planet isreal and are all too aware the human activity has accelerated itsharmful effects. It is my goal to help address this issue and mitigateits effects. I intend to return the committee’s focus to supportingthese endeavors.

There are many other areas which I believe we will focus on in thisCongress. Two areas close to me are increasing funding in STEMeducation and better mental health care. My experience on theScience Committee has proven to me that change is inevitable, and the best way to prime our workers to succeed as our economycontinues to move toward automation is by offering STEM train-ing that will open doors of opportunity for many working fami-lies.

As the first registered nurse elected to Congress, few of my col-leagues realize as well as I do what kind of impact mental healthhas on so many of the issues we face. I intend to bring my expertiseand experience to address this issue – one that affects us in Texasvery directly.

This is an uncertain time in our government but an exciting timenonetheless. Know that I am grateful for the opportunity to con-tinue serving and always appreciate your well-wishes and prayers.

Congratulations to our own Circle-Let Wanda GilbertCongratulations to Circle-Let Wanda Gilbert, who, after a lengthy court battle against thepolice of Miami Gardens, Florida, wasawarded over a million dollars in compen-satory damage.

Wanda had been fired as a whistleblowerfor speaking out about unwarranted arrestsmade by police officers of this city trying tomeet a quota that would earn them 5 per-cent annual raises. The jury awarded herover a $1 million.

Circle-Let Gilbert’s lawsuit pre-dated heavily publicized claimsof harassment by a Miami Garden’s businessman, a series of sto-ries by the Miami Herald and a study by Fusion that showedMiami Gardens’ police stopping, frisking and harassing residentsat alarming rates. More than 99,000 were documented. An em-ployee of the businessman who filed the complaint was stopped419 times over a five year period, and was arrested 62 times, mostlyfor trespassing.

Officers were ordered to target black males between the ages of15 and 30 years of age.

Not long after speaking out and penning letters to the Chief ofPolice and the City Manager about her concerns, she was fired.

Wanda’s speaking out against this abuse led to the resignations ofthe city’s police chief and his top deputy.

Throughout this ordeal, Wanda was supported by her loving Cir-cle-Mate Herman.

West Los Angeles ChapterBy Circle-Let Aurelia BrooksThe West Coast Chapter has been relatively quiet the last fewmonths, however in August, 2018 Laurel Lightner, our president, invited chapter members to the First Annual Sutro Avenue JazzFestival. The main stage was located directly in front of Laurel’shome, so members enjoyed the concert from her front lawn. Concertheadliners included Dwight Tribble and Barbara Morrison. LeRoyDowns, a local jazz station DJ, was one of the hosts of the festival. After the concert, the musicians and festival hosts joined the WestL.A. Circle-Lets, dancing the night away in Laurel’s backyard.

The members decided early on to have a “Holiday Get Together”in January rather than Christmas to avoid conflicting dates withother events.

The Luxe Hotel in Beverly Hills was the spot chosen for celebratingwith friends, the holiday past and the new year’s activities. A de-licious brunch staged in a lovely room with a setting of crystalglasses of champagne and glistening china on each table, beganthe morning to afternoon affair. A Jazz group played continuouslymuch to the delight of members and their guest, many of whomjumped up and danced to the sounds. A little added spice was see-ing several of the Golden Globe attendees as they departed for theawards show held later that evening. This is Hollywood, after all.

Tweetye Carter said that prior to Christmas she and husbandSteven spent about a week at Lake Tahoe relaxing and getting backto Nature. She was instrumental in planning the Luxe Jazz eventwhich she coordinated during the Christmas Holidays.

Aurelia Brooks and Nedra Austin were the hosts of the Januarymeeting which happened to fall on Aurelia’s birthday, January18th, and much to her surprise, the club president, Laurel Lightner, brought out a cake with flaming candles and the members sangHappy Birthday. They wisely did not sing, “How old-old are you?”

Because birthdays also signal gifts, members were asked to bringa wrapped White Elephant gift to the meeting for exchange.(White Elephant - anything you have in your possession that youwant to get rid of as in, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure)If one member liked another member’s selected gift, she couldtake it rather than from the other wrapped gifts. Made for somehilarious times.

Kim Lee Lamb and her husband Tony travel to distant places everyyear and this year they took a two week tour from Cape Town toJohannesburg, South Africa. They went on three safaris inKruger National Park amongother highlights. Kim said thatthere is something about step-ping foot on the Mother Landthat makes you feel like you havefound home. It was the trip of alifetime for both of them.

Jackie Ryan spent the holidays with her daughter Ali Ryan Scottand her grandchildren, Langston Scott (14) and Jacsyn Scott (10),who live in West Orange, New Jersey and who were only toohappy to visit sunny, warm Los Angeles, California. One of thehighlights of their trip was attending the 38th Annual Black Doll

Show, “Double Dutch: A Celebrationof Black Girlhood.” The exhibitionshowed the many nuances of being aBlack girl such as play, activism, edu-cation, the black experience andHAIR. Included in the show were pic-tures of Jackie as a child playing withher dolls some seventy years ago. Thegrandchildren were entranced withthe pictures of their grandmother as ayoung girl.

Nikki Debruhl Browder announcedthat she is retiring in June from the

Department of Radiology at UCLA Breast Imaging Section after28 years. From fellowship to professorship, 1991-2019, she hashad a fulfilling career and is ready to enjoy relaxing, exercising, traveling and spending time with family and friends.

Joyce Gordon brought her daughter,Kai to the Brooklyn, New York Cir-cle-Let Conclave following whichthey toured parts of New York takingin the play “The Boys in the Band”,on Broadway. They then traveled bytrain to Washington, DC for a fiveday cultural experience, spendingtwo days exploring the NationalAfrican American Museum andtime at the National Portrait Gallery, and the National Mall. In between, they enjoyed the restaurants of DC.

West Los Angeles members areplanning an interesting year of ac-tivities and will keep the Circle-Letmembership up to date on what’shappening in the West.
