As we approach the end of another term I am once again delighted to introduce the latest edition of our newsletter. It is loaded with stories, updates and the achievements of our wonderful students and is testimony to their talents and the dedication and hard work of all Madeley School staff. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all staff, students, parents and carers for their support and patience during the spells of inclement weather that came courtesy of ‘the beast from the east!’. Let’s hope for some more favourable weather during the summer term. It has been a relatively short half-term but we have managed to cram in a huge amount of extra-curricular and enriching experiences that are ‘Inspiring Excellence’ on a daily basis. One particular highlight for me has been celebrating student achievement in our core values.

All staff are encouraged to nominate success and demonstration of these values. I then have the privileged task of selecting a student from each category and awarding a place on our core value ‘wall of fame’ which is situated outside the main hall. They are displayed proudly for two weeks and are invited to a breakfast with the Principal as a token of our appreciation and to celebrate their achievement. The theme of celebration is evident throughout this newsletter and it is an area of school life that I am keen to promote even further. We have celebrated the success of past students who have returned to act as positive role models; individual students have been recognised for success in music, drama, acting, sport, reading, Duke of Edinburgh and work in raising money for good causes. We can celebrate these successes as a result of student hard work, commitment and a desire to make the most of every opportunity, both in and out of school. By establishing a culture of success built around rewarding effort, achievement and personal development we will continue to ensure that all students continue to flourish. Our Year 11 students will return for their final full half term here at Madeley after the Easter break. I know that they have been working really hard in preparation for their GCSE exams and should take the opportunity over Easter to not only continue with their revision, but equally take time to recharge, relax and re-energise. A road safety awareness campaign in the final week of term highlighted the importance of staying safe and I

would like to wish you all a happy and safe end of term break, and look forward to welcoming you back for the

challenges, opportunities and celebrations in the summer term.

We regularly send information emails to parents and carers, if you do not currently receive these or if you need to update any of your contact details, please email us at [email protected] to update your details.

The Peer Mentors at Madeley School are continuing to support the new Year 7 students in their second term here at Madeley. A select few of our Peer Mentors do weekly reading sessions with designated students on Mondays and Fridays to improve their reading skills and to strengthen the bonds between Peer Mentors and students. Lunchtime clubs are also available to the students where they can go and chat with a friendly face about any problems they may have. Peer Mentors are also situated around social areas and are always there to assist students during social times. All the Peer Mentors here at Madeley are really impressed with how the Year 7 students are settling in and taking part in regular extra-curricular activities. I was particularly impressed with their attitudes towards fundraising during Sports Relief week. As Peer Mentors we endeavour to continue our work to the best of our abilities and continue to make Year 7s feel welcome into the Madeley School community. Written by Zoe Bailey (Year 10 Peer Mentor)

Madeley welcomed Nathan Smith back to school for a special National Schools Football week assembly with Y7 and Y8. The Port Vale footballer was joined by Port Vale Chief Executive Colin Garlic and Director of Football John Rudge. The 21 year old knows all about football at his old school Madeley because, not only was he a regular in their team, he was also a member of their side that won the Sentinel Schools’ Shield in 2012. Nathan has started 92 consecutive matches for the Valiants since making his first-team debut away to Bradford City in League One on the opening day of last season. Mr Goodwin said “Nathan is a perfect role model. He was outstanding when he was here, not only in football but academically.” Joan Walley who was Member of Parliament for Stoke on Trent North presented the school with a signed Nathan Smith football shirt. Mr Goodwin presented the assembly and talked about our core values and Mr Ostrowski talked about Nathan's sheer determination when he was at school. Madeley used National Schools Football week to promote the benefits of football, and sport, across the curriculum. Pupils used their design skills to create football shirts, looked at the financial side of the game in maths lessons and also promoted the physical and mental benefits of taking part in sport and a healthy lifestyle.

Despite the ‘Beast from the East’ almost sabotaging Madeley School’s World Book Day, pupils refused to give in and made a tremendous effort to keep their literary spirits high! Madeley saw a myriad of literary characters enjoy the day, including hobbits, Mad Hatters, Willy Wonka and appearances from a host of characters from Harry Potter (a favourite for the day). During the day, pupils participated in a range of competitions: a hunt for characters, a World Book Day quiz, battleship with books, guess the staff ‘Shelfie’, creature creations and a 500 word short story. In addition, a number of pupils sub-mitted some creative cake designs; the skill and thought that went into the designs was outstanding and a treat to judge! Individual year groups also competed with Miss Jones’ Year 7 form winning first prize for their fantastically detailed door decor depicting Alice in Wonderland! Well done to everyone who supported, sponsored and raised money for Readathon this year. We have

raised £101.44 for this amazing cause: providing books, mobile libraries and story tellers for children in

hospital. Excellent work. Overall, Madeley School refused to let the weather dampen literary spirits and World Book Day was a great success. Well done to all who took part.

Congratulations to Zoe Bailey on her Performing Arts LAMDA Grade 6 Achievement

The LAMDA Level 3 (Grade 6) Certificate in Performance: Acting is designed to enable learners to develop a wide range of acting skills. Learners will perform their chosen scenes from memory, integrating their knowledge and skills to demonstrate a mature understanding of the material. Acting has been part of my life ever since I was a little girl. LAMDA examinations allow me to achieve, grow and excel in performance and give ground for interesting and extremely controversial characters to flourish. LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts) is a well-known Drama School in London which offers syllabus examinations in Musical Theatre, Speaking Verse and Prose, Acting and Shakespeare. For my Level 3 Grade 6 examination in Acting I was required to perform two monologues from memory. My first monologue had to be from either the Ancient Greek, Roman, Elizabethan, Jacobean, Restoration or Post-Restoration time periods. I was thrilled when I found out my chosen piece was from Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”. The scene I had to perform required me to think and reason with the beliefs of the time period and understand the contextual details that shaped my chosen character as well as being confident in using Shakespearian language. My second monologue had to be a contemporary monologue written and set within the modern era. My chosen monologue was a radio play called “Bargaining” by Kellie Powell. LAMDA allows young students to see the contrasts between two different time periods and allows students to play a wide range of characters from different eras. I am so happy that I have achieved my Grade 6 Acting award with LAMDA and achieved 14 UCAS points. I am really excited to take my Grade 7 exam this coming summer. I would like to thank my friends for their continued support and for putting up with my reasonably ok Shakespearian diction. I would like to thank Sian Jones, my drama teacher, for her continued support in helping me choose suitable monologues and helping me to develop my characters. I would also like to thank Miss Andrews for recognising my achievement and her constant support on the run up to my exam. And lastly, my mum and dad for their relentless use of their taxi service and bank account!

This term the Music department ran a research trip for Year 10s to The Beatles Museum as part of their Sgt. Pepper’s set works. Year 11s have also been extremely busy recording their final solo and ensemble performance pieces. The choir, orchestra and samba band continue to rehearse weekly during lunch time towards the summer concert. Also, a huge congratulations goes out to the following pupils who have passed instrumental grades this term:

On 12th March as part of National Apprenticeship Week, Newcastle-under-Lyme College brought along their Apprenticeship bus to Madeley School to give our Year 10 and Year 11 pupils valuable Careers and post-16 advice. Pupils took part in information sessions inside the bus and were all given goody bags. Outside the bus pupils were encouraged to take ‘selfies’ in the ‘where do you see your-selfie!’ photo board booth and took part in a timed competition to beat the engineering buzzer and a challenge to hammer nails into wooden logs which brought out the competitive nature in all the pupils who took part.

Thanks to NULC and to Mrs Kretschmer for organising the event.

Year 7 have been busy at Madeley School! Last term ten year 7s were

chosen to go to the City Dogs Home in Stoke to visit and learn all about the

dogs at the centre. The City Dogs Home was set up in Bucknall,

Stoke-on- Trent to provide kennelling for local stray dogs, and to re-home

them if they were not claimed These pupils were chosen because they had

brought in the most amount of donations such as: blankets, towels, dog

toys, tinned food, dog biscuits and chew sticks, so they got the opportunity

to hand them to the staff themselves. Well done to all of year 7 who

brought in donation items to help this worthy cause.

Year 7 have been studying the book ‘Wonder’ by R.J Palacio in English lessons and as a special treat on Wednesday 28th March they will get to watch a screening of the film in the afternoon in the hall. We hope they all enjoy it!

On Tuesday 27th March 25 year 7 pupils along with 25 year 8 pupils will be going to Cadbury World for the day as a reward for having the best behaviour for learning score in the whole year group. We hope they have a fantastic time and well done to all of those pupils!

Bikeability - Thursday 24th May 2018

24 pupils from year 7 will be taking part in Bikeability which will involve the skills to tackle a variety of conditions Those who achieve all the outcomes will be awarded a Bikeability Level 3 badge and certificate. Good luck to those pupils who will be involved!

On Thursday March 15th Mr Royall, Mrs Lee and Mrs Sheppardson took 29 year 9 pupils to the Big Bang Fair at the NEC in Birmingham. There were lots of exhibitors there from large global companies like JCB to stalls run by students from high school and colleges who had set up their own research projects. The event originates from aspiring scientists in school who carry out a range of individual or group research tasks supported by staff and often business partners. Through a series of regionalised competitions these students in three age ranges progress to the "Big Bang Fair" where they present their research findings to the public who vote on their favourite piece of research! Since its humble beginnings it has grown on a massive scale - this year there were four stages where science thrills and spills were presented to inspire and wow the audience! In addition to our young scientific entrepreneurs there was a host of STEM big punchers JCB, Siemens, Rolls Royce demonstrating their 3D printing, universities offering careers advice a range of "radiation & radioactivity" protection services and the RAF who even brought along a full scale replica of a typhoon Eurofighter.

Highlights of the day from pupils included: "I really enjoyed the trip and it was a great day. My favourite part was the Williams FW40 F1 car as it was great to finally see one up close as I love F1. It was also great to see all of the aerodynamic aspects of the car. I would definitely go again" Harry Cotton 9CL "I enjoyed the science trip to the NEC. I particularly enjoyed the practical activities including the reaction test and the puzzles". Jack Dunkley 9CL We really liked the trip to the Big Bang Fair, especially the show that we saw about making music using code. The stalls about the RAF planes and Royal Navy ships were great and showed how they were built. It was really cool and we got loads of free stuff like pens!" Rebecca Gaskell 9CL, Iona Young 9CL, Matilda Summerfield 9NC. The trip was enjoyed by all the pupils and well worth a visit in the future with other year groups and perhaps we could also have some budding science entrepreneurs presenting in the future!

As part of the winning team at the Science and Technology challenge regional event in June 2017, Robert Peddie and Morgan O'Hara attended the Northwest Challenge final held at the Kilburn building, part of the university of Manchester campus On Wednesday 9th September accompanied by myself Mr Royall.

The task was to work with pupils from John Wall school in Birmingham as a team of four; to program a Lego mind storm robot around a course and to write and deliver a 3 min presentation on the day, the importance of robotic research and development and an insight into the future of robotic technology! The presentation from both in their team was excellent and was, in my opinion one of the best presentations on the day! While there were no places for the team on the final podium Rob and Morgan were an absolute credit to themselves, their parents and the school and I enjoyed the day in their company!

Young Engineer of the Year KMF Green Power Electric Car On Wednesday 14th March, our group of Young Engineers from Year 10 visited Newcastle Football Club’s Ground, with our electric powered race car. The brief for the visit was to see if the car would perform well when driven around the banked circuit, which runs around the pitch. Our car passed scrutineering with only a few minor comments from the engineers, checking its safety and adherence to the construction rules. Onto the circuit we pushed the first willing test pilot at the dizzy speed of around 15 MPH, quite a daunting task in a car built in the schools technology workshop, around a steeply banked track. The car and team with various driver changeovers performed well, and both held up to the full 45 minutes of track time we were allocated to, with no breakdowns or other issues, despite the bone chilling temperature! We are looking forward to a few more test runs on the school playground and plan to make some key adjustments, before we hope to attend the full day event at Malory Park race track. Many thanks to Chris Wayman, from Staffordshire University, and also to Mr Hardy and Mr Whalley for their support.

Young Engineers Pupils in Y6 from The Meadows have been visiting Young Engineers this half term for Greenpower ‘Goblin’ car training and laser cutting a key ring.

As part of their KS4 Pathway on alternative curriculum opportunities twenty four students on the “Purple Pathway” have enrolled on an AQA accredited Business course. The Ace room is working in conjunction with Stoke City Football Club’s community partnership team in providing the students access to this “Premier League Enterprise Scheme” commencing on 27/2/18. The scheme which has been part funded by “Sport Relief” offers our students a twelve week programme enabling them to gain their qualification. Comprising of a course induction visit to the BET 365 Stadium, looking at the variety of differing job rolls and business opportunities linked to establishments such as professional sports teams and wider industry, ten one hour sessions held in school, concluding with a return visit to the stadium in week twelve at the end of the course for a celebration and awards ceremony. Our students are really enjoying this opportunity for a different style of learning and are fully engaging in the variety of activities and tasks designed to support and enable them in developing the following key employability skills:- • Communication • Creativity and innovation • Decision making • Financial awareness (the students earn SCFC money for tasks, face fines or costs for incompletion or not meeting targets, they then have to keep/manage a profit and loss balance sheet) this will be exchanged for prizes at the end of the course • Initiative and leadership • Organising and planning • Positive attitude (growth mind-set) • Problem solving and adaptability • Product and service design and team work.

COPE is a fully accredited GCSE NVQ style portfolio based course, comprising of six core units divided into

twelve modules from which students can complete projects to gain relevant evidence towards the

qualification. Whilst discussing the two core units of; “Citizenship & Community” and “Working as a Team” our

current year 10 group made the decision to plan and complete a challenge to raise money for charity, “Sport

Relief 2018” being the chosen charity. They looked at a variety of ways in which they could raise money and

settled on a sponsored walk, from school to Keele University and back. They formed their own planning

committee, deciding on “job roles” for each individual, supporting them in hitting their evidence targets for;

planning, communication, teamwork, contribution and constructive reviewing - (plan do review/improve).

The sponsored walk itself was a resounding success, achieving their targets of evidence for “citizenship and

community”. Each team member successfully gained sponsors and completed the walk, adding an individual

total of 20,030 steps and 13.7 Km each to the “Sport Relief” target of 1Billion steps. The group total was

160,240 steps and 109.2 KM. We have raised just under £200.00 for Sport Relief. Whilst at Keele The COPE

Group had the opportunity to try out and discuss the new hydrogen powered environmentally friendly car on

show, they were very impressed with the fuel efficiency of this vehicle and the fact that its bi-product from its

exhaust would be water rather than anything which would pollute the earth or its atmosphere. We also visited

the art gallery looking at the 1930s photography display.

Excellence in Music Provision Award Success

We are delighted to have been awarded an Excellence in Music Provision Award. This award is recognition that Madeley School has undertaken an audit of music provision in school against the Excellence criteria. The assessment and recommended award level has been reviewed and is now supported by the Music Education Hub. Well done to Mr Smith and everyone involved.

Following a recent review of our new behaviour policy we have identified the strengths, areas for development and identified some actions we wish to take to keep driving towards outstanding behaviour. Firstly, the new behaviour system is working well and is showing improvements in the standards of behaviour. The spring term saw 88.10% of pupils achieve Bronze standard or above which is good to outstanding behaviour consistently every day. The autumn term saw 89% of pupils achieve a Bronze or above. 25% of pupils in the spring term showed Silver standard behaviour or above consistently every day. This has increased from 20% in the autumn term and finally, 3% of pupils in the spring term showed Gold standard behaviour consistently every day, an increase of 1% in the autumn term. It is clear that behaviour is showing an improved general upward trend towards being consistently outstanding within lessons. Pupils are clearly on the road to inspiring excellence and the school values are shining through in the school each day.

Finally, the number of lunchtime incidents are extremely low. This has been due to a higher profile of staff presence around school, lunchtime clubs being offered by staff, designated indoor space to socialise and improved eating accommodation (3 designated indoor spaces with more tables and seating). With the leadership of the pastoral teams and the work of all the staff, who are not sitting on their laurels, we all wish to develop behaviour even further to continue to drive towards outstanding behaviour through the school values and high quality teaching and learning to ensure more pupils are achieving Silver, Gold and Platinum behaviour status. To support this improvement we know we have to improve the sharing of behaviour and achievement information with staff, pupils and parents and also to develop and improve our rewards system further. The next term will see more consultation with stakeholders about further improvements so that we can all be part of driving towards inspiring excellence.

It is also very pleasing to see that the new behaviour policy is impacting on the number of internal exclusions which still remain very low at KS3 and have reduced in KS4. The use of the remove room has also shown a decline in the number of incidents half term by half term by almost a 50% reduction. This is showing escalating and extreme behaviours have reduced and remain low within the school. This is not only impacted on by the new behaviour system but also improved communication and partnership working with parents, carers and agencies.

Whole school attendance is above the national average of 94.8% and slightly below the school target of 96% at 95.1%. Attendance is important: Please see below the ladder to show the number of days missed due to absence. Punctuality May we please remind parents and pupils that school starts at 8.50am and pupils need to be in their form room at this time. Punctuality is needed and is important in the future for the workplace, this is another part of the ‘hidden’ curriculum we are encouraging the pupils to learn.

Can we please remind parents not to drop off or pick up pupils inside the school grounds before and after school unless arranged with the school. This is due to the buses accessing the bus park and to prevent any possible accidents with pupils as they enter and leave the school site. Thank you for your cooperation on this matter. The kitchen staff and cleaning staff and a member of site staff have just completed their updated safeguarding level 1 qualification in line with the statutory guidelines. The remaining staff are due to update theirs in Sep-tember 2018. Safeguarding Leads The safeguarding lead for Madeley School is Mr L Hope, the deputy safeguarding leads are Mrs Snape, Mr Green and Miss Boustead who is also the Looked After Children Co-ordinator. The Safeguarding Academy Councillor is Mrs H Jarvie. Safeguarding is the responsibility of everyone. If you do have any concerns about a child and require advice or to report a concern the contact details for the local authority are:

Phone: 0800 1313 126 (Office hours) Monday to Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m and Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Phone: 0345 604 2886 (Out of office hours)

Monday to Thursday 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. and Friday 4:30 p.m. until Monday 8:30 a.m.

Uniform Visitors to the school have commented about how smart our pupils look in their new uniforms and what a difference it has made in terms of the pride and respect around school which all supports the pupils to inspire excellence in their learning and conduct. Please may we remind you of the high standards of uniform that we expect at Madeley school, this includes no jewellery, minimal make up, grey trousers and the wearing of black shoes.

Parent/Carer Consultation Evenings We cannot stress enough the value in the importance of consultation evenings. The communication between school and home is a vital part of supporting pupils in achieving their best outcomes. Year 7 had an 80% turnout, Year 9 78%, Year 10 86% and Year 11 88%. The year 8 evening is scheduled for Thursday 28th June 2018. Please feel free to contact the school if you need to discuss any issues either by phone or email.

Thursday 8th February saw the Annual Duke of Edinburgh Presentation evening event take place at Madeley. This is something that is growing year on year and we were delighted to present not only 31 Bronze awards to Year 10 but also, for the first time 18 Silver Awards across current and last year’s Year 11 as well. It was a fantastic evening in which the achievement of all pupils involved was celebrated with parents and teachers! It was fantastic to see all the hard work that pupils have put in rewarded with something that they can carry with them through to later life and that will really set them in good stead for their futures. It was clear to see the sense of achievement felt by all pupils receiving their awards! Congratulations!

School Champions Membership We are delighted to announce that Madeley School are now a member of the Stonewall’s School Champions Programme. We have access to support and guidance from Stonewall on homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying as well as support to help celebrating difference.

Pupils at schools throughout Madeley village are being reminded of the need to consider road safety, as part of a targeted education programme this week. Following an award of almost £1,800 from the Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership and led by Madeley School, partner agencies operating in the village have teamed up to help educate local youngsters and the local community. This week will see pupils and parents at Sir John Offley and The Meadows Primary schools receive information and advice from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and Staffordshire Police, supported by Road Safety staff from the County Council. Pupils are being provided with fluorescent pump bags which will help make them more visible to drivers on the walk to and from school. Year 6 pupils from the two local primary schools will also be visiting Madeley School this week to receive a road safety demonstration from DHL, who are bringing their 44 tonne road safety cab and trailer into school. Mr Nixon said: “Road safety is of paramount importance for pupils, parents and the local community. Securing these funds has enabled us to maximise opportunities to work with local partners, raising awareness of road safety issues to our students and pupils within the local primary schools, many of whom walk to school.” And at the senior school, students will be receiving targeted education from the emergency services and the Fire Service will also be using their CRASH vehicle to highlight to youngsters the need to exercise care when on the road network. Head teacher from Sir John Offley Primary school, Sally-Anne Ward said; “We’re really pleased to be part of this programme which will provide invaluable advice to our children and indeed to their parents too.” The targeted programme operating throughout the village is being delivered by a range of partners including Madeley Parish Council, Newcastle Borough and Staffordshire County Councils, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, Staffordshire Police, Community Speedwatch and is also being supported by DHL. This approach aims to support regular community concerns expressed by local residents regarding the volume of speeding traffic throughout the village over recent months. Thanks to everyone involved especially Mrs Jarvie one of our Academy Councillors for helping to secure and co-ordinate the bid.

The pupils smashed all fundraising records over what was a fantastic week of sports relief activities. All pupils in Y7-10 took part in a Morning Mile and Joe Wicks school workout during form time throughout the week. There was also house sports relief quiz, a guess the sports star treasure hunt, students v staff volleyball challenge, a pupil personal challenge activity and a Great HIIT workout challenge where a personal fitness instructor put pupils through an intensive 50 minute workout. The highlight of the week was the 5 hour workout marathon, where some 170 pupils over the course of two separate days challenged themselves to complete 5 back to back 1 hour fitness workouts. Congratulations to Grace Middleton and Jacob Lovatt who won the World Book Week competition to name our carved wooden school owl. Woody was chosen as the winning name. Woody was carved from an old tree that was rotted and had become diseased. Chris Williams, who is one of our ex-pupils and now works for STS Contractors, kindly carved the work of art for us. Thanks Chris!
