Part 1 | An American Family of Sculptors: The Alexander Calders By discussing the work of three generations of Calder sculptors, we will better understand the development of sculpture in America. From the architectural enhancement and imagery of the founding fathers, to the City Beautiful Movement of the late 19th century, to the impact of European Modernism, we begin to see what led to the incorporation of kinetics and steel in the work of the best known Calder sculptor, Alexander.

Part 2 | Isamu Noguchi: Master of Stone As a young man, Isamu Noguchi worked in the studio of Constantin Brâncuși and then traveled to Japan where he was inspired by Buddhist funerary figures. In the U.S., he became deeply influenced by surrealism. In this lecture, we will consider Isamu Noguchi’s career as a reflection of the multi-variant influences of modern art in the 20th century—with Noguchi’s later work and his California Scenario in Costa Mesa as the ultimate culmination of these influences.

Part 3 | Breaking it Down: Craft and Sculpture in American Art In the mid-20th century, American craft and sculpture saw radical shifts and blurred boundaries for the first time. By investigating the work of ceramicist Peter Voulkos and glassblower Dale Chihuly, we will trace this arc from traditional “craft” media to purely sculptural forms that were often grand in scale.
