reetings AMTA-AZ members!
As I sat down to write this letter, Irealized that it will be my last
President’s Letter, as my term as presidentwill be over in April. Wow, time flies whenyou’re having fun. It has been a lot of work, but I have enjoyed these 4 years so much. Ithink I have learned a lot about myself, havegrown professionally and personally and havedeveloped an immense appreciation forpeople all around me.
I have been volunteering with thechapter for about 14 years. In that time, Ihave attended 11 conventions and attended6 National board meetings, meeting volun-teers from all over country and getting toknow the staff that works for us at theNational office. I have been able to sit downwith people who are working and volunteer-ing for AMTA and have seen that eventhough we are all from different back-grounds, we are all working to make thisassociation the best it can be. I am sograteful to have had those experiences.
I do plan to continue working for thechapter and helping with our communica-tions, as well as being available to mentorour new president. I believe in the work wedo, so I still want to be a part of it, although

• On March 14, 2018, AMTA representa-tives met with senior staff at the National Centerfor Complementary and Integrative Health, partof the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Themeeting focused on the necessity of increasingthe amount of massage therapy research, asmassage therapyhas become moreaccepted as animportantapproach tomanaging pain.
• In late2017 and early2018, AMTAprovided detailedinformation onthe efficacy ofmassage therapyfor pain to theU.S. House ofRepresentativesWays and MeansCommittee andits Energy and Commerce Committee, as theyprepare for hearings related to the opioid crisis.
• AMTA worked directly with the WestVirginia Attorney General for a program toreduce use of opioids for pain. The state is verypositive about the incorporation of massagetherapy in a list of approaches to pain that canhelp stop the rampant use of opioids there—thehighest in the country.
Massage Therapy as an Alternative to Opioids
The state public education program includes a recommendation ofmassage therapy as a first-line approach vs. opioids. As a result, AMTA hasbeen actively discussing a similar approach with legislators in an increasingnumber of states.
• We also connected the state officials in West Virginia with researchersin Kentucky working on this same subject. We have had an ongoing rela-
tionship withresearchers at theUniversity ofKentucky foreducationalroundtables inWest Virginia andKentucky. Theyrecently publishedsome of theirresults, showingthe value andefficacy ofmassage as asubstitute foropioids2.
• In December2017, AMTA submitted recommendations to the Agency for HealthcareResearch and Quality (an agency of the U.S. Department of Health andHuman Services) for inclusion of research on massage therapy for chronicpain, to be included in their analysis and recommendations for non-pharma-cologic approaches.
• In October 2017, AMTA was an exhibitor at the Appalachian OpioidConference and met with state officials from multiple states about how tointegrate massage therapy into non-pharmacologic approaches to pain as acounter to the national opioid epidemic.
Helping Government Address Opioid Use
rescription opioids carry serious riskof addiction, abuse, and overdose, inaddition to a number of side effects,
even when taken as directed. According to theCenters for Disease Control1, deaths fromprescription opioids—drugs like oxycodone,
hydrocodone, and methadone—have more than quadrupled since 1999.For that reason, a number of health organizations and governmental
agencies are seriously looking at alternative ways to manage pain. The American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) continues to beactively engaged with several organizations and agencies regarding massagetherapy for pain and specifically as an alternative to opioids.
