Dear Families and Friends,

In each issue of the Messenger I try to convey the outstanding work completed

by the many men and women who work at the Manor. In this issue I would like

to share with you a note I received from Hospice of Kankakee Valley:

“I wanted to share something I heard yesterday regarding Good Shep-

herd Manor. We have a weekly IDT (Interdisciplinary Team) meeting

with our physicians, nurses, aides, chaplains and social workers where

we review every patient and their needs. We were reviewing a patient

on service that resides at GSM and it turned into a lengthy discussion

about what a wonderful place Good Shepherd is! Our physician works farther up north and wasn’t

familiar with your facility so he asked questions and I was able to sit back and listen to the amazing

answers our staff gave. They talked about how loving your staff are and how well your residents are

cared for.

I wanted to share this with you because too often we only hear the negative comments about nursing

facilities or healthcare providers in general. You are doing outstanding work there and our organi-

zation notices!”

Rachel Fruehling

Hospice of Kankakee Valley

I am flattered by these kind words from Rachel and very proud of our staff at the Manor. To our staff I say

thank you for living our mission.

We continue to welcome new faces to the Manor. We are happy to have Ron Spaulding, Kevin Ryan and

Jacob Alexander join Good Shepherd. If you know of someone with an intellectual or developmental disability

in need of residential or day services please call the Manor at 815-472-3700 or check out our website at

www.goodshepherdmanor.org

The current budget proposed by the Governor includes a 12% cut in funding for Intermediate Care Facilities

for the Developmentally Disabled (ICFDD); Lombard and Herbstritt Homes. I am concerned that the legisla-

tors will fail to adequately fund services for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities because

they do not know the good work and service we provide. A 12% cut would have a significant impact on our

budget as well as other service providers throughout the State. I am reaching out to our State legislators and

request that they maintain the current funding for the men we serve, I ask you to do the same. We are provid-

ing many wonderful services for the men at the Manor and this gets increasingly difficult when our funding is

threatened. We need to ask our legislators to support our services.

Spring is here; the days are longer, lighter and slightly warmer. There is hope and optimism that the darker

days of winter are behind us. Despite the potential barriers our future is bright. It is easy to be optimistic be-

cause I know we have a network of families and friends who support our Mission...thank you!

Infirmary/Nursing Services by Janis Land, Director of Nursing

I would like to take this opportunity

to introduce Michelle Clifton.

Michelle started working in the

Infirmary on November 18, 2014.

Michelle has been married for 27

years to husband, Alan and has two children. She loves to be outdoors and enjoys spending time boating and

reading. Michelle said she was an “Air Force brat” and landed in this area when she was 18 years old. She has

stayed here ever since.

Michelle has been an LPN for 18 years. She has enjoyed getting to know the men of Good Shepherd Manor.

She can be heard joking and interacting with the men on a daily basis. Michelle doesn’t hesitate to jump in

when needed and has a vast amount of experience and knowledge to draw upon.

Thank you, Michelle, for joining our team!

Did you know:

When the men of Good Shepherd Manor have testing, x-rays, etc. completed per physician orders, it is the

physician who interprets the results of those tests. We receive many calls asking the nursing staff or the QIDP

for results of ordered tests. Neither the nursing staff nor the QIDP can interpret results or release information

until the individual has had a follow-up appointment and it is explained to us what the results mean. In addi-

tion, most physician office personnel will not release that type of information over the phone.

We would really like to be able to relay information of tests to guardians and families upon request, however,

legally we cannot. Please understand that we are liaisons between the physicians and hospitals. The group

homes here are considered “community living.” The physician offices treat the men the same as your physi-

cian would treat you with wanting follow up appointments to discuss results if needed.

Day Program by Dr. Lyell Stark, Day Program Director

MESSENGER

Greetings from Day Program

The Day Program team is working very hard to bring the residents of GSM

new and exciting things to do. Recently a new instructor and trainer were hired

for our Personal Living Skills (PLS) class. We are happy to welcome Courtney

Kinstle and Ina Gilmore-Tensley. Already they are hard at work to provide

new learning opportunities for the men.

We have embarked on a new journey and are piloting a Culinary Arts program

in PLS. Recently one class began preparing for a meal they would enjoy at the

end of the week. Each day of the week they cook or put together a portion of

the meal that they can freeze until it is needed for their luncheon. The men

kicked off this program by preparing Mexican cuisine. Each week they will learn about different cultures and

how to prepare different courses for a complete and well-rounded meal.

Exciting things are also taking place for our senior residents. Instructor Linda Goodman, trainers Amelia

Pope, and Pearl Trigleth have developed learning centers in the classroom for the men to do exploratory learn-

ing. Creating the learning centers allows the men the opportunity to try new things at their own pace, and also

gives them several options to achieve their goals. Thus far the men have responded favorably and seem to en-

joy the engaging activities planned and presented to them. (See more photos on page 6.)

Improvements continue to be made in Jerry's Lounge. Recently new cornice boards were placed on top of

each window with a sports theme. They look great!!

It is also our hope to get a new pool table and a shuffle board table for the lounge, as well as some new table

games. The men really like the sports theme and the changes that are being made to this common area. We

would like to thank everyone for their support!!

Working on the Mexican meal L-R are:

Manor Matters

A Tribute to Thomas Edward Leonard March 27, 1930 - November 23, 2014

Thomas E. Leonard, 84, passed away Sunday, Novem-

ber 23 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The eldest of seven

children of Michael E. and Mary Donnelly Leonard

(deceased), he was born and raised in Grand Rapids,

MI. He attended Catholic schools, culminating in his

graduation from the University of Notre Dame in

1951, then moving to Chicago.

In 1953 Tom married Ann Nachtegall and together

raised seven children, living first in Wilmette for over

40 years and then to Northfield, IL. They were to-

gether 48 years, until her passing.

In 2003 once again good fortune graced him as he met

his second love, Patricia Williams, who he married and

together they shared a love for family, friends, the arts,

travel and Santa Fe. Tom was an avid photographer.

A sailor since the early 1950’s, Tom captained his vessel Chasseur on sailing adventures with family and

friends across the Great Lakes, to Labrador and Newfoundland, the Pacific to Hawaii, and the Atlantic to the

Azores, Spain and France. He loved traveling and exploring the Southwest. In the 1970’s he built, with long-

time friends Michael and Roberta Potts, a home in Santa Fe, NM.

In the 1960’s Tom joined Henry H. Grebe & Company Shipyard. Starting as a general manager, eventually

owning the Chicago institution long-noted for ship building (private and U.S. Naval), selling, storing and

maintaining boats. He was a member of the Chicago Yacht Club since 1955. One of his favorite sayings was,

“The first one to see land gets a shiny gold doubloon.”

Tom served on the Board of Directors of Good Shepherd Manor. His brother, Robert, who came to live at

GSM in 1972, passed away in February of 2014. Also preceding Tom in death are siblings Kathleen (William)

Farhat and Rosemary Leonard. Tom is survived by his wife, Patricia; siblings Rev. John (Barbara) Leonard,

Margo (Robert) Karczewski, Ann Molenda and Edward (Nancy) Leonard. He is also survived by his children:

Michael (Stacy) Leonard, Maryellen (Daniel) Schwartz, Joan (Donald) Short, Patricia (Glenn) Allen, Stephen

Leonard, William (Shauna) Leonard, Sarah Leonard, along with 17 grandchildren and four great-

grandchildren.

Services took place at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Wilmette, IL.

“Pull up the ladder, I’m aboard.”

Good Shepherd Manor Foundation for the benefit of Good Shepherd Manor

Our Condolences to the family of resident Charles Lindberg, 63, who passed away on January 21, 2015.

Charles called the Manor his home for more than 43 years. He was most recently a resident of the Helen

McAllister House. He was a very social and active member of the Manor and will be missed. A memorial ser-

vice will be held at the Manor later this spring or summer.

Our Condolences to the family of Ralph A. Smith, 96, who passed away on February 20, 2015. Ralph was

the father of longtime resident Craig Smith, who preceded him in death. Ralph and his wife, Lucille, celebrated

75 years of marriage this past year. They teased each other about not being sure if the marriage would last!

God blessed them with each other! Ralph is survived by Lucille and son, Wayne Smith along with several

grandchildren and great grandchildren. Inurnment will be at Fairmount Willow Hills Memorial Park.

Our Condolences to the family of Eleanor R. O’Brien, 87, who passed away on March 19, 2015. Mrs.

O’Brien was the mother of Dr. Ed and Joan O’Brien. Services were held at Our Lady of the Angels Chapel at

Marian Village of Homer Glen.

We welcome the following new residents to the Good Shepherd Manor family: Ron Spaulding to the Zurek Home in Momence. Ron came to Good Shepherd on January 28, 2015. He enjoys

his workshop and seems to be very happy with his new group home and friends.

Kevin Ryan to the Leonard House on the main campus of the Manor. Kevin arrived on March 2, 2015. Kevin

is getting acclimated to his new day program and enjoys his new friends at the group home. Kevin looks for-

ward to becoming an alter server at Mass.

Jacob Alexander joined the Manor as a Day Program client on March 2, 2015; he is still able to live at home in

Momence with his mother. Kevin is enjoying his new routine and all his new friends at the Manor.

Celebration of the Fusion Into the Hospitaller Brothers of St. John of God

On Wednesday, March 11 we celebrated the ministry of the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd,

now known as the Hospitaller Brothers of St. John of God, with a Mass and reception at the Manor.

On January 19, 2015 the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd fused with the Hospitaller Brothers of

St. John of God. This 'fusion' of the two religious orders saw the disappearance of the Little Brothers

of the Good Shepherd as a formal entity.

The Hospitaller Brothers of St. John of God is one of the oldest religious orders in the Catholic

Church. They were founded with the mission to provide assistance for the sick and needy. It had its

origin in Granada, Spain in the second half of the 16th century to continue the charitable work of

Saint John of God, who was born at Montemor-o-Novo (Portugal) and died in Granada on March 8,

1550. The Brothers operate hospitals and other related health care and social services in 52 coun-

tries around the world.

The founder of the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd, Brother Matthias Barrett, was originally a

Hospitaller Brother of St. John of God before founding the Congregation in 1950. "In so many ways

this reality was little more than the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd exchanging their white

habits for the black habits of the Hospitaller Brothers of St. John of God," said Brother Justin

Howson, Brother General of the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd. He added, "the mission, the

values, the work of these two religious orders are virtually identical and will not result in any changes

in the day to day work with the poor and needy."

"As part of the combining of the two orders, the new Hospitaller Brothers of St. John of God Province

of the Good Shepherd in North America was created," stated Brother Jesús Etayo, Prior General of

the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God. "This new Province will combine the existing North Ameri-

can ministries of the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd with our existing ministries in Montreal

and New Jersey. Brother Justin Howson has been appointed the Provincial Superior with the

Provincial Office located in Hamilton, Ontario."

This is an opportunity for the Brothers to draw upon the strengths that a much larger religious order

can offer, including learning different approaches to supporting the sick and needy from around the

globe. The programs and supports delivered to those in need will continue unchanged.

Good Shepherd Manor Foundation for the benefit of Good Shepherd Manor

Over the years Good Shepherd Manor has received

several “surprise” gifts from the estates of people

we never had the chance to thank. Without a doubt

we appreciate the gifts immensely and the gifts

certainly help us accomplish our mission...but we

also feel somewhat cheated.

We never had the opportunity to express our heart-

felt gratitude for their generosity. We never got to

know the people who made the gift possible. What

was their life story? What was their life’s work?

Why did they select Good Shepherd Manor for

their legacy gift?

The Shepherds Endowment Society (SES) was es-

tablished to recognize those who have included the

Manor in their estate plan or who have chosen to

make Lifetime gifts to be held in perpetuity. Mem-

bers receive a beautiful plaque to display. They are

invited to an annual luncheon to be updated on

things happening at the Manor and learn about the

growth and impact the

SES is having each year.

Members who have

passed are remembered

with a candle lighting

ceremony.

One of the best parts of

my role here at the Manor

is staying in touch with

the current SES members and encouraging others to

join. We want the opportunity to thank and honor those

who have included the Manor in their estate plans...we

want them to know the impact of their gift!

Please consider joining the wonderful people listed on

the prior page. If you choose, your name and gift

amount can be kept confidential. My direct number at

the Manor is (815) 472-3090. Give us the opportunity to

appreciate what YOU are doing for us!

A BIG THANK YOU to

everyone who contributed to the

Generator/Sprinkler Drive we did

a couple of years ago...the

generators kicked in several times

this past winter...keeping our men

safely in their homes during

episodes of bad weather!

The men and staff of GSM want

to AGAIN, THANK YOU!

We love this picture of Rex Hartman

(left), along with Pat Broderick (in the

foreground) at the Mass of Celebration

on March 11, 2015. Great smile, Rex!
