They grew up in theOrangeburg and St.Matthews areas and haddreams of going to ClemsonUniversity. Well-educatedand hard-working, both wereaccepted into ClemsonUniversity and graduatedwith degrees in HealthPromotion and Education in2009.Soon after graduation,

Mary Elmore Taber found sheneeded technical skills tostand out in the competitivefield of healthcare. Maryfound that the skills neededfor promising jobs inhealthcare could be foundat OCtech. In 2011, Marygraduated with an AssociateDegree in Nursing. She wenton to work at the RegionalMedical Center and theSouth Carolina OBGYNpractice at Palmetto HealthBaptist in Columbia.Currently, Mary is aRegistered Nurse atPalmetto Health Richlandin the Neonatal IntensiveCare Unit. She has alsorecently become ECMO(ExtracorporealMembraneOxygenation) certified.

After earningher master’s degree, sheworked for the Departmentof Education in the Healthand Nutrition division andcovered 12 school districts.She liked her job, but wanteda more hands-on careerwhere she could actually seeherself making a differencein peoples’ lives. That’s whenMeredith decided to applyto the Associate DegreeNursing program at OCtech.Meredith knows that aftertwo-years of training, she willearn a higher salary than shedid after earning hermaster’s degree. “So manypeople ask me if I feel like Iwasted time and money ona four-year degree. Ofcourse not,” said Meredith. “Ilook at it like I used thoseyears to find my true passion.I realized I wanted to be anurse. My four-year degreegave me a good foundationfor my career.” Meredith is currently in her

senior year of the program atOCtech and will graduate inMay. She was selected toparticipate in the RegionalMedical Center’s new HealthCoach program and wasrecognized as having thehighest academic averagein the Associate DegreeNursing freshman class.

The OCtech Middle Collegeprogram gets ambitious juniorsand seniors into college

courses while they are still in highschool. Before a student graduateshigh school, he or she has thepossibility of earning almost twosemesters worth of college creditsthrough the Middle Collegeprogram. This allows students to get a jump

on their college degree while

saving thousands of dollars. This alsogives students wishing to transfer toa four-year university advantagesover other students that have nottaken dual enrollment courses. Forexample, the dual credit coursesallow students to prove theiracademic abilities prior to goingthrough the increasinglycompetitive admissions process.For students interested in

Students interested in a career in healthcare can beginexploring this field through Middle College by enrolling incourses in Health Careers and Medical Terminology. Innine months, students may also earn their Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license through OCtech’s Middle College.

NEW High school students may prepare to apply foradmission into OCtech’s Nursing and Health Science programs after graduation by completeing 12 credit hoursof their general education courses with a 2.75 GPA.

Meet the Foley Family

David, Ann, Gary and Christopher

The Foleys met here at OCtech. Ann and Garyboth enjoyed juggling and got to know eachother while practicing a juggling act they wouldperform at an OCtech event. They were marriedthe following year.Gary and Ann, as well as their sons, are all

OCtech graduates. Gary, the College’s Directorof Information Technology, earned a degree inElectronic Instrumentation from OCtech and thenlater completed his Master’s degree in Educationat USC. Ann, a Senior Applications Analyst,graduated in Data Processing. David, their older son, is employed at Koyo and

is a graduate of our Engineering GraphicsTechnology program. Christopher is completinghis senior year in Radiologic Technology andworks part-time as a patient transporter at TRMC.

In August, OCtech welcomedits first class of 11 PresidentialScholars. This year’s participantsare 2014 graduates of Bamberg-Ehrhardt, Calhoun County,Dorchester Academy, Edisto,Hunter-Kinard-Tyler, OrangeburgPrep, and Williston-Elko highschools. During the one-year program,

the students will take 30 or morehours of transferrable generaleducation courses that will becustomized based upon transfercollege and curriculum. At theend of the year, our scholars planto transfer to Clemson University,

Charleston Southern University,USC-Columbia, USC-Aiken, USC-Upstate, Francis Marion Universityand the College of Charleston.The students have a variety ofinterests and are planning towardcareers in Education, Nursing,Radiology, Agriculture, PhysicalTherapy, and Pharmacy.Job Shadowing is an important

part of the Presidential Scholarsprogram. This fall, students havelearned more about careeropportunities by shadowing atClemson Extension, Grove ParkPharmacy, Calhoun County HighSchool, and TRMC.

As part of the program, thestudents hear from guest speakersin a “Lunch-and-Learn” format.Dede Cook, President of theOrangeburg County Chamber ofCommerce, began the speakerseries in early October, and othercommunity leaders andrepresentatives from business andindustry will follow.Looking ahead, our Presidential

Scholars will tour the StarbucksRoasting Plant in Gaston, take atrip to see The Mountaintop (aperformance about the life ofMartin Luther King, Jr.) and attenda USC baseball game.

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs)are certified healthcareproviders who are trained torespond, treat, and transportindividuals in emergencysituations. EMTs work alongsidedispatchers, Advanced EMTs,and Paramedics as membersof the Emergency MedicalTeam. The median salary for an

EMT in our area is $29,800, andEMT professionals are in

demand. Since all ambulancedrivers must now be certified,more certified EMTs areneeded, especially in ruralareas like Orangeburg andCalhoun Counties where amajority of patients liveoutside the city limits. According to the US Bureau

of Labor and Statistics, the joboutlook for EmergencyMedical Technicians isexpected to increase by 33%by 2020, much faster than theaverage for all other

employment types. Thisincrease is expected to addover 75,000 jobs to the market. OCtech’s EMT certificate

prepares students to work withthe Emergency MedicalSystem (EMS) and becomestate and nationally certifiedas an EMT-Basic. Afterreceiving this training, studentsmay choose to pursueadditional training in theEmergency Medical System tobecome Advanced EMTs orParamedics.

Michael Milton, Electronic Instrumentation Technology student and ContinentalTire Apprentice, was selected to attend the 21st National ATE PrincipalInvestigators Conference in Washington, DC. The conference wasmade possible by The American Association of Community Collegeswith the support of the National Science Foundation. Miltonattended along with four faculty and staff members from OCtech. During the conference, Michael participated in “meet and

greet” sessions with industry representatives and sharedinformation about his apprenticeship at Continental Tire andthe OCtech Aquaculture Project.

In the Engineering GraphicsTechnology program, we usethe 3D Printer to generate 3DModels to help studentsvisualize objects. The 3D Printeris also used to createprototypes for designs likethese.
