Creating Awareness, Creating a CommunityBy Pam Welsh-Huggins

“ When we become more aware of the sights and sounds around us, what does that experience do to us?”

The most powerful answer to this question for Bishop Ready 9th graders is an enhanced sense

of place.Since 2011, freshmen Art & Music Appreciation

students have been asking and exploring the above and similar questions about the nature of creativity, community, and awareness. Every year since Visual Arts faculty member Barb Stoll and I overhauled the old textbook-heavy course into its new hands-on incarnation, we have invited students to engage in a temporary installation project in which the students “hand” a painting they’ve made in a favorite spot on the school grounds. Students typically select their installation space either because it’s an overlooked architectural detail that they like, or because the place has given them a sense of belonging. For the first three years of the class’ existence, students would then take a photo of their installation then quickly retrieve the painting and bring it back to the art room.

But not this year. From the outset, Ms Stoll’s and my goal was

for stdents to be allowed to set their art free as a gift to the school community. Although we were inspired by Columbus artist Matt Logsdon’s civic pride “Bus Project,” in which the artist left small silk-screened blocks of wood in places around town that he wanted passers-by to notice, Ms Stoll and I knew that it would take time to create a culture of students who would value and respect art in unexpected places, so—with Ready principal Ms Seamen’s guidance—we waited until nearly every student in the building would understand the mission of the mini-installations.

The class of 2015 was the first cadre to engage in what Ms Stoll and I call the “Sense of Place” project, so nearly every student at Bishop Ready now understood what it would mean when small

paintings appeared around the building. Ms Seamen asked us to re-introduce the project to the school community after the Feast of the Immaculate Conception Mass in early December so that teachers and students alike would know what to be looking for.

One of our first 9th graders, Ryan McFarland, now a senior who leads

“the Dungeon” at basketball games, lent credibility to the project by talking about what the process had meant to him. In the meantime, the current 9th graders mounted their paintings on cards, on which they shared their reasons for choosing their installation site, as well as an inspirational quotation and greeting to the person who might find their card, wishing the recipient a happy Christmas.

Then the art was set free as students placed their paintings in their chosen spots around school: favorite teachers’ classrooms; locker rooms; the weight room; next to their parents’ photos in the Hall of Fame; the cafeteria; windows that allow them to dream of outdoors; and, for a few students, the chapel.

One person who chose the latter place for his installation was Daniel Houston, whose card was found by World Languages/Spanish faculty member Señorita Miller. Srta. Miller was so excited to have found Daniel’s card that she asked Ms Stoll to introduce her to him. When the teachers caught up to Daniel in the lunchroom that morning, he was so pleased by Srta. Miller’s appreciation that he leapt to his feet and gave her a huge hug.

And that hug is one more answer to the question of what happens when we become more aware of the sounds and sights around us: we build a community of mutual appreciation and compassion.

Four Ready seniors have joined the ranks of Eagle Scouts in the Boy Scouts of America:

Mark Gnatowski, Connor Lancia, Stephen Landy, and Andrew Rowe all completed their individual projects and met the stringent requirements for becoming Eagle Scouts.

While many famous men have been Scouts (including U.S. presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, John F. Kennedy, and Barack Obama and other notables such as Hank Aaron, Bill Gates, and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.), not all persevere and attain the rank of Eagle Scout. Our seniors join a distinguished list that includes Neil Armstrong, Michael Bloomberg, Stephen Breyer, Gerald Ford, Sheldon Leonard, Michael Moore, Rick Perry, and Steven Spielberg.

The Eagle Scout is the highest advancement rank in Boy Scouting; some of the requirements to attain this ranking include earning 21 merit badges; serving six months in a troop leadership position; planning, developing, and providing leadership to a service project; and taking part in a Scoutmaster conference.

Mark Gnatowski ran into a small problem as he began his project: a gas line running under the area he was planning to refurbish. By altering his original plans, he was able to remove the “old” landscaping and replace it with “new” at the entrance of the Hilliard East Municipal Pool. Mark is a member of the school’s National Beta Club and National Honor Society, and Honor Roll student, member of the varsity cross country team, Academic Team/In-the-Know, Future Business Leaders of America, St. Vincent de Paul Society, and is a Ready Ambassador, member of the Liturgical Choir, and participant (including all-state Choir) in OMEA competitions. In addition, Mark somehow finds the time to be a core member of the Ready thespians, taking both lead and supporting roles in many Ready theatre productions. Mark hopes to study history as an undergraduate with a view to attending law school. Mark is a member of Troop # 859.

Connor Lancia rebuilt a fishing dock at a 4H camp in Jackson, Ohio. An Honor Roll student, Connor is a member of Ready’s football and basketball teams and is a member of Future Business

Leaders of America. He volunteers at his parish, St. Cecilia, and plans to play football at the college level while majoring in accounting with the plan to become a forensic accountant. Connor is a member of Troop #33.

Stephen Landy worked with Run the Race, an organization that serves underprivileged youth in the Hilltop area. For his project, Stephen worked to “improve the aesthetics and functionality of Run the Race’s outdoor space.” He removed weeds, planted new flowers in the landscaping, poured a concrete pad and secured a memorial bench to it, and installed a basketball hoop in the parking lot.

Stephen is an Honor Roll student, president of the Beta Club and Future Business Leaders of America, member of the In-the-Know team

and St. Vincent de Paul Society, and a Ready Ambassador. He is a member of the cross country, track, and soccer teams. He plans to major in biomedical engineering on the undergraduate level and then attend medical school and specialize in neurosurgery. He is a member of Troop #814.

Andrew Rowe refurbished the concession stand at St. Mary Magdalene’s baseball field, a personal project as well because he is a graduate of the school and has worked in the concession stand there! He is an Honor Roll student and member of the Environmental Club and bowling team. Andrew also volunteers for the Special Olympics bowling team. He plans to attend the Wooster campus of OSU. Andrew is a member of Troop #33.

Maria’s Message…If you live in Columbus, chances

are great that you are aware of the tragedy that befell Dom Tiberi and his family on September 17, 2013. That was the day his daughter said a warm good-bye as she headed out the door to visit her sister.

It was also the last day the family would see Maria alive. Maria was involved in a fatal accident when she hit the back of a stopped semi-truck trailer. She hadn’t been drinking and she was not on the phone or texting. But she was distracted by something and in the blnk of an eye…

Dom Tiberi is determined to spread the word, especially to teenagers, about the dangers of distracted driving. To that end, he spends time visiting area schools to talk about what can happen in a very short span of time and the need to be ever vigilant behind the wheel because he knows all to well what can happen when a driver isn’t vigilant.

In December, Mr. Tiberi, the sports anchor for WBNS-10TV, visited Bishop Ready and spoke to our students, from the heart, about the need for defensive driving. It is our hope that our students will take to heart what Mr. Tiberi had to say for, painful as it is for him, he is providing a much-needed service in addressing the issue of distracted driving, a problem for all of us, not just teenagers.

Ready Senior Reflects on Travel Abroad…

Senior Meredith Rivers has quite a future ahead of her. She signed a

letter of acceptance to attend and play volleyball at Otterbein University where she will major in Nursing with plans to one day be a pediatric/oncology nurse.

As for her present, Meredith is an Honor Roll student (every quarter since freshman year), earned her third year varsity letter this year, has been a member of Ready’s volleyball team for four years (First Team/All District and First Team/All CCL, junior and senior years), is a member of the St. Vincent De Paul Society, the Environmental Club, Bake Club, and Chinese Club, and volunteers at the Mid-Ohio Food Bank, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, and the Madison County

Humane Society. Meredith is also a member of this year’s Homecoming Court.

But it’s her past that has helped make Meredith the person that she is…dedicated, hard working, curious, and interested in the world around her. For she participated in the People to People Student Ambassador Program and visited three different parts of the world, all before she reached the age of 15!

When she was 12 years old, Meredith participated for the first time in the Program, having been nominated by a teacher from her middle school. Her first trip took her to Australia for 14 days: “Some of my favorite experiences (in Australia) involved snorkeling in The Great Barrier Reef. Looking back, I can’t believe that I was 12 years old and did that! It was the opportunity of a lifetime and a great adventure,” Meredith said.

The next year, at 13, Meredith went to China for 17 days: “…some of my favorite experiences were, of course, climbing the Great Wall of China. It was actually very steep and, at one point, we could hardly walk so we crawled up it.” She enjoyed both Hong Kong and Shanghai because both are very modern and situated in beautiful settings. “I enjoyed learning about the Chinese culture the most,” she stated, “because it is such an old, traditional culture with a great history.”

At 14, and now a fairly seasoned traveler, Meredith went to France, Italy, and Greece for a total of 23 days. “We visited Greece first and my favorite experience was visiting Athens and

Meredith Rivers ’15

13

seeing the Parthenon Temple. Also,” she continued, “seeing where the very first Olympics were held.” From Greece, it was on to Italy by boat. “My favorite experience in Italy was going to Rome and the Vatican. I felt so at home at the Vatican,” Meredith stated, “because I was raised Catholic and seeing the Vatican in person, having learned about it in school, actually took my breath away and it meant a lot to me.” As an aside, Meredith confessed that “I also enjoyed the food in Italy; there wasn’t a meal that I didn’t like!”

From Italy, it was on to France by train, where Meredith was especially taken with the view of Paris from the top of the Eiffel Tower.

Meredith endorses the Programs in which she participated, believing that “Going on People to People at a young age helped me to become a well-rounded person. It helped me to experience the world around me and realize that there is a lot more out there than just Columbus, Ohio. I believe,” she continued, “that it also helped me to mature because I realized that not all countries are as fortunate as the United States. It made me very proud to be able to call myself an American and also made me more appreciative of what I have and where I am from.”

Last spring, Meredith revisited France and added Spain to the countries that she has visited when she joined with her classmates in Ready’s spring European trip. “My experience at Ready over the past four years has been great! I have gone to a Catholic school since I was in kindergarten so I realize that I am getting the best education that I could ask for, especially at

Bishop Ready,” Meredith volunteered. “Going to Bishop Ready has not only allowed me to grow in my education, but also in my faith. I would recommend going to Ready because it is a family that will support you in all aspects of your life,” she stated, “whether it’s school, God, sports, or finding opportunities…they will always have your back.”

Through the cooperation of parents, parishes, and local communities, as well as the resources right at the school, Bishop Ready strives to enhance the educational and spiritual experiences of each and every one of our students…Meredith is just one example of how exploring beyond our “comfort” zone can help a student to grow. Meredith’s closing thoughts, though, are for her parents: “I am so thankful that my parents gave me the opportunity to do this at such a young age because I believe (the experience) helped shape me into the person that I am today!”

Ready Students Shine in Lend Me A Tenor

There are eight characters—and the word is used advisably, with a double meaning fully in play—in Ken Ludwig’s

Tony-Award winning comedy, Lend Me A Tenor. The Ready thespians ably conveyed the confusion and frustration inherent in 1) a major tenor who has passed out on the night of an important fund-raising performance; 2) various romantic diversions with misunderstandings; and 3) the sudden appearance of not one but two tenors ready to take the stage and the spotlight.

Set in 1934 Cleveland, Lend Me A Tenor involves split-second timing and an appreciation for…what can go wrong, will go wrong.

A cast of four seniors and four juniors exhibited the aplomb of seasoned veterans in bringing out the very best that the play had to offer. Under the direction of Ready faculty member Jill Larger, the cast and crew gave a performance that showcased their many talents.

Seniors Mark Gnatowski as Max, the opera assistant who “assumes” the tenor role, Marguerite Mills as Maggie, Max’s girlfriend, Kaitlyn Montgomery as Julia, Chair of the Cleveland Opera Guild, and Rylie Wahl as Maria, the tenor’s wife, inhabited their roles like second skins! They were ably joined by juniors Michael Creagh as Tito, Il Stupendo, the world-famous tenor, Andrea Duarte as Diana, the opera’s ingénue soprano, Andrés Walliser-Wejebe as the bellhop who is described as “an obnoxious opera fan who keeps showing up at the wrong moment,” and Benjamin Young as Saunders, the opera’s general manager and father to Maggie.

The crew of juniors Nicole Naporano and Elizabeth Wolf and sophomores Mary Beth Mogan and Andrew Pindell were indispensable to the success of the play.

New Students Join Ready’s International Students Program

The International Students Program at Bishop Ready received two new members in January

when twins Jasmine (Pangyuan) and Tony (Youxuan) Ling joined the Ready student body. The Ling twins bring to eight the number of native Chinese students now enrolled at Ready.

While the other six students live with Ready parents, Jasmine and Tony are living with an aunt who resides in Columbus.

The Lings are natives of Harbin, the provincial capital of Heilongjiang Province, in the far northeast corner of China. Harbin has a population nearing 10 million people so Columbus is a treat for them, with less crowds and better air quality. According to Ms Pam Welsh-Huggins, coordinator of the International Students Program at Ready, the Lings like pretty nearly everything that they have encountered at Ready, including their uniforms!

While Jasmine and Tony get acclimated to life in the United States and at Bishop Ready, they stay in touch with their folks back home via WeiChat, every evening at 6. Tony admits that the one thing that he really misses is his video games while Jasmine particularly misses their dog, Heizai.

Freshman Named “Ordinary Teen Doing Extraordinary Things”

Freshman Jaide Lehnert was named an “Ordinary Teen Doing

Extraordinary Things” by Face Forward, a program of the Diocesan

Office of Vocations. Launched in 2012, this venture highlights teens from the Columbus area who “exemplify Jesus’ message of the importance of service to others as part of leading a Christian life.”

While a student at Trinity, Jaide served as the chairperson for the H20 for Life program, served as a teen aide during Vacation Bible School, and was an altar server. Jaide spearheaded fund-raisers for H20 for Life, a program that raises awareness about the water crisis in underdeveloped countries. Through her efforts, over $1,000 was raised for Kenya. In addition to this important work, Jaide has also volunteered at the Columbus Metropolitan Library and the Ronald McDonald House.

Jaide is the daughter of Tammy and Wade (Ready ’89) Lehnert and the sister of Damian, a junior at Ready.

secretary of the chapter, Hailey Bryan, treasurer of the chapter, Elizabeth Cline, historian of the chapter, Spencer Coleman, Katherine Townsend, and Brooke Weimer. Principal Celene A. Seamen acknowledged acceptance of the new members and senior Francesca Cocchiarale made final remarks.

Admission to the National Honor Society, which is open to juniors and seniors, requires demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership,

service, and character. Founded in 1921 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the NHS not only recognizes students for their accomplishments but also challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

Senior Wins Regional Award, Competes for National Recognition

Senior Rylie Wahl submitted two pieces of art work to the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards,

a presentation of The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, and was awarded a Silver Key for her Digital Art “My ‘Little’ Sister” and a Gold Key, American Visions Nominee, Film & Animation for “Don’t Embalm Me. I’m Not Dead.”

This year, the Central Ohio region received over 1400 individual submissions and 72 portfolio submissions from students in grades 7 through 12. From this group, 37 pieces were acknowledged at the regional Gold Key level and 62 pieces received Silver Key awards. A reception honoring the awardees was held in January at the Columbus College of Art and Design. Her work was done under the guidance of Visual Arts faculty member Barbara Stoll.

According to its website, “Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have recognized the vision, ingenuity, and talent of our nation’s youth, and provided opportunities for creative teens to be celebrated.” Ms Wahl’s Gold Key work is currently being considered for national recognition. As we went to press, announcement of national winners had not yet been made.

Castle Crew: Elementary StudentsLearn About Leadership

Ready’s Castle Crew, a club for elementary students,

continues to provide both information and activities that allow students in grades 4

through 8 to “experience” Bishop Ready through participation in various events.

In February, Dan DeCrane, director of Castle Crew and the Partner School Outreach program, held a “Leadership & Team Building Night” at Ready. During a period of some pretty brutal weather, 38 students attended the evening event, featuring captains and coaches of various Ready sports teams. Topics included how to build character, leadership skills, and teamwork. There was a video discussion on “How to be an Everyday Leader” and discussion of “Five Biblical Concepts and Paradoxical Commandments of Leadership.” In addition, there was a Girls’ Soccer Foot Signing Game, Boys’ Baseball Squashball, and Spirit Sign Making sponsored by Cheerleading, as well as a Dodgeball Competition sponsored by softball, and a Boys’ Soccer First Touch Game.

More information about the Castle Crew is available on the Ready website, www.brhs.org, on the main menu bar. Or, contact Dan DeCrane at 614-276-5263, ext. 231.

Coach DeCrane is “proud of the resiliency and toughness the team showed as we battled adversity throughout the season. With no returning varsity players, the coaching staff knew that our progress would not be measured necessarily on the scoreboard but throughout the entire body of work: practice, team meetings, Catholic faith, team building sessions, academics, and life skills. I am proud to say that many of our players took the next step in their lives by becoming responsible young men and leaders in their community. The returning players are well aware of the work that needs to be done in taking the next step and we are as hungry as we can be to achieve that.”

Girls’ Basketball—Coach Joe LangCongratulations to the Lady Knights for a great season!

A heart-breaking, tough loss at the Districts to Liberty Union, 47-46 in overtime, ended their run.
