Queens Open Cut: Please click the image below for a time-lapsevideo taken over the course of three months late last year thatshows the ongoing steel, rebar, concrete and waterproofing work inthe Plaza Interlock ing located underground at Northern Boulevardand 41st Avenue.
Open cut progress - October 10 - December 5, 2013
Harold Interlocking: Preliminary work has begun on contractCH057A (Harold Structures Part 3A) including filing of permits andwork plans; site surveying and installation of instrumentation formonitoring the sites. The contractor has also started mobilizing tothe site and initiated procurement of the various signals towers, bridges and other materials. This contract will be responsible forthe excavation of 680 feet of tunneling below the LIRR Main Lineand construction of the Westbound Bypass tracks, power, catenary and signal systems. (Click here to read more about thiscontract in the 4th Quarter Newsletter.)
Lou D'Amico Program Executive
Lou D'Amico is one of threenew program executives onEast Side Access. His mainresponsib ility is providingmanagement and oversightof the area known as ProjectControls, which includesthings like estimating, scheduling and riskmanagement; a herculeantask on a project like EastSide Access. Prior to joiningEast Side Access, Louworked for New York City'sHudson Yards DevelopmentCorporation where he heldthe position of senior vicepresident and oversaw workto build the infrastructure forthe retail space and mixeduse areas. He was alsoresponsib le for overseeingdesign and construction for anew four-acre park known asHudson Park and Boulevard;and aspects of the extensionof the #7 subway line to thewest side
How did you get your start inthe construction andengineering field? The space race in the late1960's fascinated me sowhen I went to college atPolytechnic University inBrooklyn I pursued aBachelor's degree inEngineering hoping for a jobin that field, but as theeconomy wasn't great I tooka job with a civil constructionfirm called SlatteryConstruction. That firm, nowpart of Skanska USA CivilNortheast, was working onthe Second Avenue Subway

Sunnyside: The new retaining wall, which runs parallel to BarnettAvenue between 43rd and 48th Streets, is nearly complete.Concrete and rebar work to build the 48th Street bridge deck inpreparation for receiving the new tracks is underway. Two newsignal bridges have been installed across the tracks close to 43rdStreet and all the existing signal towers from the Honeywell Bridgeto 48th Street, slated to be removed have been taken down.
project. What are some of the otherprojects that you haveworked on?After my time on the SecondAvenue Subway project, Iworked on several othertransit related projects alongthe east coast. I worked onthe Porter Square SubwayStation in Boston; FriendshipHeights Station, TenleyCircle Station, and L'EnfantPlaza in Washington, DC. Which have been the mostinteresting or challengingprojects?Much like in New York, theextensive existingunderground infrastructure inWashington DC makesconstruction in those citiesvery challenging. But themost interesting project Iworked on, before ESA ofcourse was the Big Dig inBoston because of the widerange of engineering andconstruction methods thatwere used. After a long career inconstruction, what do youthink about East SideAccess?East Side Access is a veryexciting project. Themagnitude of the work isunlike anything else and thechallenges presented by theconstruction methods, the inplace infrastructure - such asworking below an active railyard - and the multipleaccess restrictions, are whatmake this project soexciting. And of coursemuch like my experienceswith Hudson Yards, Iwelcome the opportunity tobe part of a project that willhave such a tremendousimpact on the City of NewYork.

covers the fabrication and construction of the permanent structuralconcrete lining, interior structures, and fit-out for the caverns andtunnels previously excavated by others beneath and to the north ofGrand Central Terminal. This $295 million contract is scheduled toget underway later this year. Also in March 2014, Tutor Perini was awarded the contract forCS179 Systems Facilities Package No.1. This contract covers theinstallation of multiple systems throughout the project including thebackbone communications system, fiber optic networks, controlcenters, telephones, security systems, fire detection, signalpower, lighting and many others. This $550 million contract is alsoscheduled to get underway later this year.
New Management at East Side Access Changes are afoot at East Side Access as the project is movingquickly forward into a new phase of construction. With thecompletion of tunneling and major blasting, the work will now focuson building out the massive caverns and tunnels and installing thesystems that will enable the trains to run. Along with the shift inthe type of work, a new program executive and management teamwas named to lead the project going forward. On March 10th, William Goodrich took over as the new ExecutiveVice President and Senior Program Executive on East SideAccess. Goodrich brings over thirty years of experience in theconstruction industry to ESA. That experience began upongraduation from the United States Military Academy at West Pointwhere he earned a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.Afterwards, he served in the military at Fort Lewis, Washingtonwhere he was promoted to the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army. Following a career where Goodrich worked on several high profileprojects, in 2008, he took a position with MTA Capital Constructionas Senior Vice President and Program Executive on the SecondAvenue Subway project where he was prior to joining ESA. Joining Bill is a new management team which includes programexecutives dedicated to various aspects of the project. They willreport to Goodrich and oversee the remaining construction. Andy Thompson, Program Executive for Heavy Civil Construction, will manage all construction contracts in Manhattan and Queens,as well as the underground contracts in Harold Interlocking.(Click here to read about Andy Thompson in the Third Quarter 2013newsletter). Lou D'Amico, Program Executive, will lead Project Controls,Design Management and Construction Coordination. Learn moreabout Lou D'Amico in Get to Know ESA in this newsletter. Michael Kaleda, Program Executive for Harold and Project WideSystems, will manage the complex above ground work in HaroldInterlocking and the execution of the systems work throughoutEast Side Access.
