ices KAY ANDERSON LEAVES LEGACY TO HOSPiCE

Kay Anderson, a long time Hospice volunteer, left a generous gift to Hospice in her estate. This gift is being used to expand the family room at the inpatient Hospice House at Heartwood Lodge allowing for a more comfortable space. Kay became involved in Hospice after the death of her husband. She joined the support group and started volunteering in many capacities. Her support and generosity is very appreciated.

Legacy gifts are very important to non profits such as Hospice of North Ottawa Community. Leaving a legacy means leaving a gift from your estate to Hospice thorough a will or trust, or perhaps through naming Hospice of North Ottawa as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy. You may have heard this described as a “planned giving.” Planned gifts come in all sizes and no matter the size it is very appreciated. Less than 65 of American households have included nonprofits in an estate plan. imagine the positive impact on our community if everyone made a donation to a favorite nonprofit. if you have any questions on leaving a legacy please call Wendy Creason, Fund Development Manager at 616-847-5605.

SPRiNG iS iN THE AiR…The residents of North Ottawa Care Center are looking forward to being able to sit in the beautiful gardens. We are looking for volunteers who would enjoy socializing with the residents in our sunny, outside gardens. if this sounds like an afternoon well spent, please call Kristyn ireland at 847-5215.

iN PHYSiCAL THERAPY NEWS...Spring has sprung for the Rehabilitation department! Our department has been hard at work helping residents return home safely after illness, injury or surgery.

A top priority for this department has been clinical education and ongoing, geriatric therapy skill advancement. Our Physical and Occupational therapy teams recently participated in Neuro-Developmental therapy skills training, focusing on motor recovery from stroke, head injury and other motor control issues. Our speech therapist, Michelle Davis, MA, SLP – CCC, leads the Cognitive Clinical Specialty Team for Generation Care, with a priority of ongoing development of new assessment strategies and treatment techniques. Heidi Kelley, COTA serves on the newly developed Vision Therapy team also learning advanced treatment techniques to help our residents with low vision and perceptual issues. Kristi Schneider, DPT (Physical Therapist) and Traci Demarr, OTR (Occupational Therapist) are both certified in LSVT Big™ therapy, and Michelle Davis, Speech Pathologist is certified in LSVT Loud™ therapy for people challenged by Parkinson’s disease. Kristi also is a part of the Vestibular Therapy Team at Generation Care, able to diagnose and treat balance and dizziness disorders caused by the inner ear.

The Heartwood Lodge Rehabilitation team is proud to work with the nursing staff to provide the most appropriate level of intensity of therapy. Our sole purpose is to meet each individual’s goals for return to home or to maximize the level of independence and function. We encourage family involvement and questions, so please feel free to stop in and speak to each residents’ therapy team leader. There are 13 therapists at Heartwood Lodge, with four teams, two supervising therapists, a clinical manager-Nicole Catron- and two Speech Pathologists.

The PT department is excited to be expanding into a new space at Heartwood Lodge in April, which will allow us to further expand our services and simulate activities necessary for living independently, such as adapted cooking and other activities of daily living. An open house will be planned in May, during Older Americans’ month.

This past holiday season, Hospice of North Ottawa Community invited the local community to honor or memorialize a loved one by making a donation to the Tree of Life. The Tree of Life was on display in the lobby of Grand Haven’s Community Center from November 30 to December 31, 2012. This year we raised more than $15,000 thanks to the generosity of our community.

in recognition of a donation, a customized dove ornament, featuring the honoree’s name was placed on the Tree of Life by a Hospice volunteer, where it was viewed and celebrated by all who visited.

Donations to the Tree of Life campaign give ongoing financial support that enables Hospice of North Ottawa Community to continue its mission of providing compassionate care for those dealing with terminal illness. That care includes the health system’s bereavement program that is available, free of charge, to anyone experiencing loss.

VOLuNTEER PROFiLERODGER BOuKAMP | NORTH OTTAWA CARE CENTERRodger came to volunteer at North Ottawa Care Center (NOCC) after losing his wife, Maxine, in November of last year. Rodger felt the need to “do something” after her passing, and since he always enjoyed going to NOCC where he visited his late wife everyday for a year, he decided this was the place for him.

Rodger met his wife Maxine while working at Automatic Spring Products for 45 years. However, it wasn’t until her husband passed that Rodger and she began talking. Through time Maxine and Rodger grew closer, feel in love and later married. “She was a true angel,” says Rodger of his late wife.

Rodger chose to volunteer at our Care Center because, “the place is so beautiful and the staff is so nice, i just loved being there. i can tell the staff love what they do.” He said that he loves talking to people and thought he might be able to bring some joy to the residents he got to know there.

“Everyone was elated to see Roger back at the Care Center, this time in a volunteer role. Roger is very loved here by all the staff and residents, he is so positive and lights up the hallways,” said Lori Olthoff, Volunteer Coordinator for NOCC.
