Premium features retained in the design of F Series models from their E Series counterparts include a powerful, load-sensing, closed-center hydraulic system; the Cat four-speed Power Shuttle transmission for on-

Performance at the loader end gets a significant boost with the new F Series models. New lift arms for both single-tilt and IT (Integrated Tool Carrier) models increase maximum hinge-pin height by 5 percent, maximum dump height by 7 percent, bucket breakout force by as much as 9 percent, and lift capacity at maximum height by as much as 13 percent. Caterpillar Unveils First Hybrid ExcavatorCaterpillar Inc. unveiled the first model in

its new line of hybrid excavators, the Cat® 336E H, at its Mossville Industrial Design Center on Oct. 16 at a special trade press event, “The Next Generation is Here.” The new 336E H will be sold and serviced exclusively through the global Cat dealer network following the machine’s official launch at Bauma 2013 in Munich, Germany. The order board for the Cat 336E H opens in Feb. 2013, with factory shipments beginning in March 2013.

The Cat 336E H uses a new hydraulic hybrid technology developed by Caterpillar. “A hybrid is independent of any particular technology — it doesn’t have to be electric,” said Ken Gray, global product manager for large hydraulic excavators for Caterpillar’s Excavation Division. “There are many ways to store and reuse energy, including our patented hydraulic hybrid system featured on the Cat 336E H.”

“Caterpillar has developed, built and tested electric hybrid excavators, but — until now —we had not found a hybrid approach that would actually lower our customers’ owning and operating costs,” Gray said. “Large excavators operate in high-production applications in which fuel is a very significant operating cost for our customers. So, the 336E H, the hybrid version of our workhorse 336E, is ideal for introducing our new hydraulic hybrid technology, with its more than 300 filed patents.”

“We can’t wait to see the reaction of our customers to the 336E H,” said Gray. “We’re confident they will be delighted. No other commercially available technology has higher power density than hydraulics, and that’s why we selected a hydraulic solution to help our customers achieve substantial fuel savings. The 336E H also meets stringent Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB emission standards. It is extraordinarily quiet, too. So it’s a socially responsible machine for our customers to own, and they will sacrifice nothing in terms of performance, power, force, speed or production. Once more, the owning and operating costs for the 336E H are actually

lower than the standard machine. That’s the value customers expect from Cat excavators.”

“The 336E H is a game-changer — the most revolutionary excavator to come to market in decades,” said Gary Stampanato, vice president of Caterpillar’s Excavation Division. “Customers aren’t going to choose the 336E H simply because it is sustainable. They will select it because it actually lowers their owning and operating costs, and maintains the performance of our industry leader, the 336E. Caterpillar has the most productive and fuel-efficient excavator product line in the industry, and our customers are supported by the best dealers in the world. The 336E H extends our leadership, it is the right thing to do for our customers and it is a sign of great things to come.”

The 336E H has all of the same powerful advantages of the 336E with the biggest difference between the two models being even greater fuel efficiency. To achieve added fuel savings, the design of the 336E H uses three building block technologies that:

1) Conserve fuel with engine power management via the Cat Electronic Standardized Programmable (ESP) pump, which smoothly transitions between the hydraulic hybrid power sources, engine and accumulator.

2) Optimize performance using restriction management via the patented Cat Adaptive Control System (ACS) valve, which intelligently manages restrictions and flows to seamlessly control machine motion with no loss of power, and to ensure operators

experience no difference in control, hydraulic power or lift capability.

3) Reuse energy via the hydraulic hybrid swing system, which captures the excavator’s upper structure swing brake energy in accumulators, and then releases the energy during swing acceleration.

Fuel savingsThe 336E H delivers industry-leading

productivity with up to 50 percent greater fuel efficiency, which is measured in tons per liter, over the 336D. Customers can expect the 336E H to use up to 25 percent less fuel compared to a standard 336E, and up to 33 percent less fuel than the 330/336D. All three of the technology building blocks, (Conserve, Optimize and Reuse), are integrated together to maximize fuel savings in a variety of applications. Even in low-intensity swing applications, customers will still experience significant fuel savings because of the Conserve and Optimize technologies. (Additional factors, such as operator skill and jobsite conditions, also affect fuel savings.)

return on Hybrid investmentBecause the 336E H burns less fuel and

reduces regulated engine emissions, owning and operating costs will be dramatically lower compared to the standard machine, and its carbon footprint will be smaller, as well. Precisely when customers will recoup their initial investment in a 336E H depends on fuel prices and their applications. Assuming today’s fuel prices and a high-production application for a 336E H, Caterpillar estimates customers can realistically expect to see a return on their investment for the hybrid excavator model in as little as one year.

cat 300.9DWeighing in at just 2,061 pounds, the

Cat 300.9D is the smallest machine in the Cat range. Impressed? Just you wait! With an overall width of just 28.7 inches, this machine is capable of driving through a standard doorway, providing easy access to the most confined job sites. It’s a must have tool for homebuilders and demolition contractors alike. The Cat 300.9D boasts a powerful water-cooled three-cylinder diesel engine and a twin gear pump hydraulic system capable of generating a maximum stick breakout force of 1,011 lbs and a maximum bucket breakout force of 2,000 lbs.

Its spacious operator area and easy-to-use controls make it a popular choice among operators of all abilities. Maintenance also is a

snap, thanks to the 300.9D’s single steel engine cover, which provides easy access to all service and maintenance points.

cat 301.4cWith an operating weight between 2,921

and 3,340 pounds, the Cat 301.4C offers operators an additional choice in the popular 1.5 ton market. The machine is available from Foley Equipment with a choice of cab or FOPS/TOPS canopy, and a standard or extended width undercarriage.

A 24-horsepower engine powers the 301.4C, which boasts a maximum bucket breakout force of 3,597 lbf and a stick force of 1,596 lbf. It offers a good working range with a maximum digging depth of 143.5 inches and ground-level reach of 145.7 inches. When it comes to maximum lift capacity, the 301.4C can hoist 1,576 pounds in front of the machine.

Standard equipment includes extendable undercarriage, single and two-way auxiliary hydraulic lines, a sturdy dozer blade, suspension seat and hydraulic oil cooler. The

machine will have a bucket linkage that allows the use of a range of existing Cat buckets, quick couplers and powered attachments.

cat 302.7D cr Tipping the scales

at 5,681 pounds with a canopy and 5,886 pounds with a full cab, the 302.7D CR is Cat’s lightest compact radius model.

Powered by the same proven 24 horsepower engine as the 301.4C, the machine features a load-sensing hydraulic system, providing a maximum bucket force of 5,058 lbs. and a maximum stick force of 3,462 lbs.

Maximum lift capacity is an impressive 2,105 pounds with the standard long arm and counterweight combination.

The Cat 302.7D CR combines a compact radius design – zero tail swing without counterweight – with a spacious operator environment and easy access to regular service points. Two-way auxiliary lines are standard,

equipped with quick disconnects for rapid attachment changeover. A joystick-mounted proportional auxiliary control allows for fine control of a range of powered attachments. The sturdy dozer blade offers added stability when digging, and a float function on the dozer control allows operators to grade and push with confidence.

The compact track loader undercarriage is not high maintenance, but following some simple preventive maintenance procedures maximizes service life and the value of your undercarriage components.

track adjustment One of the most important things to check

for is proper track adjustment. A properly adjusted track not only maximizes the service life of the track, but also maximizes machine performance. Loose or overly tight track reduces service life and machine performance.

New tracks normally have a break-in period during which the embedded cords

settle and reach their maximum length. How much and how fast they settle depends on machine model, operating environment and operator driving habits. As a general rule, it’s recommended to watch a new set of tracks for the first few weeks of break-in, whether new machine or replacement tracks.

Checking the track for proper adjustment involves applying a specified amount of weight to the midpoint of the track to cause it to deflect. The track tension is determined by measuring the amount of deflection in the track with the weight applied. If needed, the track should be adjusted within the specified range.

undercarriage cleaning The machine’s undercarriage is often exposed to mud, gravel, debris and other abrasive materials. Cleaning the undercarriage on a regular basis is recommended. How often the undercarriage needs to be cleaned depends on the material being worked in. A daily cleaning is normally sufficient. Cohesive and abrasive materials, like mud, sand, clay and gravel should be cleaned out as often as possible, even several times a day, to reduce unnecessary wear to undercarriage components.

Pay particular attention to cleaning between roller and idler wheels and around the sprocket where material can accumulate. A pressure washer works well if available. Removing materials like mud at the end of the day is much easier than trying to remove it the next morning after it has dried. If working in scrap or debris, remove any loose strands of material, such as wire, that can wrap around wheel axles.

lubrication Cat CTLs use front and rear torsion axles for suspension that require daily greasing. The grease points are easily accessible from the ground. Regular greasing of the torsion axles is important to ensure the suspension system will continue to provide a comfortable ride and improved load retention while reducing shock and vibration throughout the machine. The CTL Operation and Maintenance Manual will specify the location and procedure for lubrication.

Foley was recently called in to develop a solution for contractors at the new Mars Candy plant under construction in Topeka, KS. To control emissions coming from a number of

machines working in enclosed environment, Foley up-fitted machines and cement mixers with exhaust purifiers. Foley was forced to respond quickly to avoid a work stoppage.

Foley Power Solutions fitted the generators at the KEPCo Power station last spring with Diesel Oxidation Catalyst and monitoring systems to make them compliant with the new emissions regulations taking effect this year and are actively bidding more jobs like this both in territory and outside of our Cat dealer territory. We can do this because we not only supply the Clean Air Systems solutions, but we also work with non-Cat vendors out of territory.

This summer we will be repowering a locomotive for Westar Energy. We will be removing an older tier Cummins engine and installing a new Tier 4 Cat engine.

Concrete Supply, contractor at the new Mars plant in Topeka, was looking at a possible delay in their pour unless trucks were up-fitted with additional exhaust scrubbers before they entered the building. Foley found a solution that was cost effective and could be implemented quickly to avoid any delays. A temporary mount was developed so the scrubbers can be removed from the trucks when the Mars job is complete.

Engine Rebuild: a Story in pictures

Foley’s state-of-the-art, 127,000-square-foot Rebuild Center in Park City, KS provides complete rebuild services on all Cat engines and components. The center carries Cat’s 5 Star Contamination Control rating for air flow and equipment handling processes that assure you a quality rebuild.

Foley can rebuild any engine, from the smallest 3304 to the monster 3616.

Engines come in from all over the globe. This engine is being prepared for unloading.

First stop is the wash bay. From there, all fluids and electronics are removed. The engine goes to shot blast for paint removal and is then completely disassembled and the parts steam cleaned in one of three wash cabinets.

2 The engine block is checked for line bore and the crank inspected and polished. If needed, the heads and block are milled.

New valve seats are installed and new cylinder sleeves inserted. Reassembly of the engine begins.

4 After assembly, the engine is sent to the dyno for testing. Foley has one of the first 5,000 h.p. dynos installed in the U.S. capable of handing the 3616 and a 1,500 h.p. dyno for smaller engines. After testing, the engine is prepared for shipment to the customer.

Enclosures Protect the Power Your Cat Generator Set is a valuable

asset. So we apply the same standards in designing and building enclosures as we do our generator sets. As a result, our weather-

protected and sound-attenuated enclosures deliver superior durability, security and convenience.

We begin with galvanized steel walls and scratch and rust resistant powder-baked paint. For safety and security, the control panel viewing window is lockable. Access doors for the fuel fill and battery are also lockable. Installation is facilitated by pre-drilled holes in the base and a single-point lifting eye. Our designs simplify maintenance with modular construction and fluid line piping to the enclosure exterior.

Excellent Maintenance AccessAs a safety feature, the circuit breaker

is mounted close to the control panel. All models feature heavy-gauge doors on either side to allow generous access for maintenance. The doors are located conveniently near the controls. A large cable entry area allows easy installation with maximum room for cable bending.

Sound AttenuationIn addition to weather protective

enclosures, sound-attenuated (typical 70 dBA) and super-sound-attenuated (typical 65 dBA) enclosures are offered.

Base Frame and Fuel TankA heavy-duty steel base frame incorporates

tips to avoid Slips, trips and FallsAccording to the U.S. Occupational Safety

and Health Administration, slip, trip and fall injuries have represented over 35% of all occupational injuries since 2002. Many of these injuries are caused by unsafe behaviors or decisions and failure to correct unsafe conditions when they are recognized. Review the following list of tips to help reduce the number of these hazards in your workplace.

Clean slip hazards on walking and working surfaces such as water, ice, snow, oil and grease. Repair leaking equipment, awnings and shelters immediately.

Walk; do not run to your destination. Give yourself enough time to get where you are going.

Wear shoes that have good tread and are made of non-slip material (rubber).

Watch where you are going while walking—pay attention and do not get distracted. Reading, writing, texting and similar tasks while walking is not safe behavior.

Always familiarize yourself with the work area and activities before starting.

Pick up hoses, cords, chains and other similar hazards immediately after use and safely store them. Install retractable hose and cord reels, if possible.

Maintain 3 points of contact when climbing ladders and stairs. Use handrails.

Inspect walkways before lifting and carrying something if your visibility to the ground is going to be obstructed.

Pick up and properly dispose of banding and straps when unpackaging materials and supplies.

Apply non-slip tape to handrails, steps and walking surfaces, if necessary.

Pick up and safely store brooms, shovels and tools. Do not lean them against a vertical surface because they can fall over and become a trip hazard.

Routinely inspect the condition of handrails and guards.

Always use fall protection if there is any possibility that you could be injured by a fall from your work area.
