Sonnenberg StationDirected by Kevin Himes Accompanied by Tim Yoder Percussion by Jared HimesSonnenberg
Tim Shue, Sonnenberg Station’s director, has a knack for taking songs from the popular music idiom and skillfully setting them for acappella men’s voices. Here, Tim has chosen to arrange a song by his good friend and fellow songwriter, Jonathan Reuel.
Go and Tell the Multitude................................................................................. Kevin Himes
Jesus’ final charge to His disciples, known as The Great Commission, was a call to world mission, to disciple, baptize, and teach all those who were willing to receive the good news that Jesus Himself exemplified. This biblical text was the impetus for this song.
Kpanlongo........................................................folk song from Ghana, arr. by Derek Bermel
Longtime Sonnenberg Station listeners are well aware that the ensemble doesn’t take itself too seriously. This anthem is nothing but sheer fun!
I Must Tell Jesus......................................................... Elisha A. Hoffman, arr. Lloyd Larson
Soloists: Chuck Merkle and Toby Hazlett; Electric Bass: Nate Gundy
The Lost Sheep................................................................................................. Kevin Himes
How Can I Keep From Singing.................................... Quaker hymn, arr. Gwyneth Walker
THOUGH HE USUALLY serves as Sonnenberg Station’s accompanist, KEVIN HIMES is filling-in as interim director for the group this spring. He earned a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the College of Wooster, and a Master of Arts in Anabaptism and Pietism Studies from Ashland Theological Seminary. Mr. Himes is the pastor of Salem Mennonite Church in Kidron. He and his wife, Jen, have four children..
ACCOMPANIST TIM YODER is a music teacher for Wadsworth City Schools. Born and raised in Dalton, he is a recent graduate of Bluffton University, where he studied music education, music performance, and piano pedagogy. This is Mr. Yoder’s first full year in Sonnenberg Station. He is very happy to be a part of it all and looks forward to participating in the future!
KAY SHUE IS COMPLETING her 15th year as a music educator in Orrville City Schools, where she’s currently teaching choir for grades 5-8. Mrs. Shue was on the staff of the Summit Choral Society for 7 years as director of the training level 4 children’s choir. She received her Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Bowling Green State University and her Masters of Music Education with a Kodaly emphasis from Capital University. In addition to music, she enjoys quilting, nature, and traveling. Kay is the wife of Terry, the mother of 3 married daughters, and the grandmother of a 1 year old.
JARED HIMES RESIDES in Dalton with his wife Ashley and three sons: Holden, Bridger, and Graham. Mr. Himes is employed as an accountant at the automotive supplier International Automotive Components in Holmesville. In his free time, he enjoys mowing with his kids, weightlifting, grilling, and anything else that gets him outside during the summer months.

Heleluyan........................... Muscogee Indian melody, arr. Jerry Ulrich and William Skoog
Although most standard choral literature has emerged from the Western (European) music tradition, we cannot forget the richness of indigenous tunes such as this one. This anthem opens with soloist Matt Yost.
Alleluia........................................................................................ J.S. Bach, arr. Walter Ehret
J.S. Bach is the undisputed master of the Baroque musical era. He is quoted as saying, “The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.” This piece is a prime example of Bach’s desire to give God glory and praise.
E’en So Lord Jesus Quickly Come....................................................................... Paul Manz
The lyrics for this anthem derive from the very last chapter of the Bible, Revelation 22. Notice the deep sense of longing for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
Sure on This Shining Night......................................................................Morten Lauridsen
Jefferson.......................................................... from Southern Harmony, arr. John Smedstad
When Jesus Wept......................................................................................... William Billings
This short and simple text nevertheless tackles the cosmic themes of God’s compassion and humanity’s condemnation under sin. Lyrics of this sort are perhaps intended to prompt the singer and listener to contemplate repentance and receive God’s grace. Bill Seymour sings the solo.
Innisfree.................................................................................................... Bradley Ellingboe
Transcendentalist authors Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau emphasized the ideal of pursuing solitude in nature, a theme which permeates this anthem as well. Gideon Dunster is the featured soloist here, as is Bill Seymour for select performances.
In Dat Great Gettin’ Up Mornin’........................................................... arr. Jester Hairston
Though Jester Hairston is known to most of us through his energetic settings of spirituals, he was also an actor, appearing in more than twenty films. This rendition is a colorful musical interpretation of biblical judgment.
Ave Maria............................................................................................................. Guy Forbes
Hold On.................................................................................. spiritual, arr. Clifton Noble Jr.
Gabi Gabi............................................................ South African tune, arr. William C. Powell
Past Yourself.......................................................................... Jonathan Reuel, arr. Tim Shue
