Our green spaces are becoming smaller, and smaller… and smaller. What were once vast areas of wilderness are disappearing, and plants, animals, and insects are having a hard time adapting.

Wetooarehavingdifficultyadaptingtothesechangesinoursurroundings.Aspeoplespendmoretimeoncomputers,watchingtvortravelingincars,ouropportunitiestointeractwithnaturearebecomingincreasinglyscarce.

Humanbeingsrelyonhealthyecosystemsforcleanwater,topurifyourair,andforfood–butspendingtimeoutsidesurroundedbynaturecanalsonurturethemind,body,andspirit.

AsEarthcontinuestolosespeciesofplantsandanimals,it’suptoallofustotakeaction–anditstartsinourownbackyards.Springistheperfecttimetoremoveyourselffromthat‘pluggedin’lifestyle,todiversifyyouryard,andturnyourpieceoftheplanetintoanurbanoasisforplants,animals,andyourfamily!

1 Let Nature, well, be Natural! Manypeoplewanttohaveeverypieceof

theirpropertymeticulouslygroomed,butit’snotnecessarilynature’sway.Whynottrylettingthingsgojustalittlebitmore“natural”?

2 Plant a Tree, or Three! Treesprovideshelterandshade,holdsoilinplace,helppurifytheairandabsorbcarbondioxide(oneofthegreenhousegasescontributingtoglobalclimatechange).Plantaconiferoustree–theyprovidemoreshelter,whichcancutdownonheatingcostsinthewinter,andcoolinginthesummer!

3 Grow Native Species. Nativespeciesareplantsthatgrewinagivenareabeforehumansettlement.Theyareadaptedtolocalconditionsandoftenrequirelessmaintenancethannon-nativespecies.

4 Compost.Landfillsaredesignedsothatmaterialsdonotbreakdown.Insteadofsendingyouryardandkitchenwastetothedump,whynotcompost?Thematerialwillbreakdownandproduceanaturallyrichfertilizerthatwillhelpyourgardenthrive.Anditcanbedoneyearround!

5 Avoid Chemical Herbicides and Pesticides.Mostproductswillkillnotonlythe“bad”bugsbutthegoodonesaswell.Eliminatingevenoneinsectinafoodchainwillaffectthewholesystem.Usenaturalsolutionstomanageproblematicinsects.

6 Watch your Water! Waterisbecominganincreasinglyvaluableresource.Insteadofwateringyourlawnandgardenwithtreateddrinkingwater,installarainbarreltocapturerunoff.InexpensiverainbarrelsarenowavailableatFortWhyte!Or,plantspeciesthatareadaptedtodrierconditions.Ifyoujustcan’tavoidwatering,turnonthetapduringthecoolpartsoftheday.

7 Leave it to the Leaves.Leaflitterprovidesshelterforoverwinteringinsects.Tryleavingmulchedgrassclippingsandleavesonyourlawninthefallafterthefinalcut.Or,rakeleavesintohedgesandbushes.Remembertosaveacoupleofbagstoaddtoyourcompostinthespring!

8 Add a Water Feature. Fromthesmallestofcreaturestothepredatorsatthetopofthefoodchain,alllivingthingsneedwater.Addingawatersourcewillprovideourtwo-,four-,andsix-leggedfriendswithamuchneededdrinkandprotectionfrompredators.

9 Provide a Little Extra Shelter. Alllivingcreaturesneedprotectionfrompredatorsandtheelements.Tryleavingfallenlogsorcreatearockpile.Forthosebiggercreatures,installanestingorroostingbox.

Ian started his career at FortWhyte in 1999 as Recreation Coordinator. In 2003 he had the good fortune to be asked to a create pilot program for what is now the thriving FortWhyte Farms. FortWhyte has always been a perfect fit for Ian - a place to share his love for the outdoors and the natural environment with others.Q. What is your favourite thing about working at FWA?

A.There’sadiversityofexperiencesherethatIdon’tthinkyoucanfindinanyotherworkplace.It’snotunusualformydaytoincludewritingagrantproposalorreport,troubleshootingacomputerortechnologyissue,followedbychasingdownwaywardpigsorchickensatFortWhyteFarms–possiblyallbeforelunchtime!Andnothingbeatscomingintoworkonaspringmorningtothesightsandsoundsofmigratingbirdsandwaterfowlonthelakesandinthetrees.

Q. What does working at FWA mean to you?

A.MyinvolvementwithFortWhyteFarmshascertainlyhadahugeimpactonmylife.IgrewupinWinnipegwithlittleconnectiontoorinterestinfarming.Ifyoutoldmethenthatmycareerpathwouldleadmetobecomingthemanagerofasmallsustainablefarmprogramforinner-cityyouth,I’dhavetoldyoutogetyourheadchecked.However,sincegettingtheFortWhyteFarmsprogramoffthegroundin2003andbecomingimmersedingrowingfood,myfamilyandIhavemovedoutofthecitytoasmallacreage,whereIkeepbees,raisechickensformeatandeggsandgrowvegetables.Small-scalefarminghasbecomealifestyle,notjustajob.

Recently,alocalnewspaperincludedaninsertpromotinganational

organization’scommunityinvolvementthroughvolunteering.Theinsertprofiled1,000volunteerhoursdonatedby30,000+employees,andservedtohighlighttheorganization’scommitmenttothecommunityanditscustomers.

Manynon-profitorganizationsaccomplishtheirmissionandvisionthroughthededicationofvolunteerswhogivetheirtime,talentsandskills.FortWhyteAliveisstaffedinlargepartbyvolunteers,andovertheyears,volunteerhourshavebeenrecordedinthe“volunteerbinder”.

So,whyisitimportantthatvolunteersrecordtheirhours,andhowisthisinformationused?

Volunteerhoursprovidevaluablestatisticalinformationthatisreferencedinfundingproposals–whichhelpsupport

thevolunteerprogram,educationalprograms,andotherdimensionsofFWA.

Recordedhoursofavolunteerareusedforinsurancepurposeswhileindividualsarevolunteeringwithintheorganization.

Volunteerhoursareusedascriteriaforinvitationtocertainrecognitioneventsaswellasforrecognitionrewards.TheVolunteerResourcesManagercanspeaktothedetails.

Hoursprovideanideaofthecommitmentrequiredforcertainvolunteerroles.Recruitmentofdedicatedvolunteersrequirestransparentandup-frontinformationthatcanpavethewaytoalong-termcommitment.

Recordingvolunteertraininghoursisanaccuratewayofdeterminingwhoisreadyfornewvolunteerroles.

Inanygivenyear,FortWhyte’s380+volunteercorpscontributecloseto22,500hoursofwork,savinganestimated$500,000annually.Itshouldbestressedthatvolunteerhoursonlymeasurequantityand“statistics”,butdonotmeasurethequalityofavolunteerprogram.VolunteersatFortWhyteprovideanopportunityforthecommunitytobeengagedandlearnaboutnature.HowdoyoumeasurethesmilesthatFortWhytevolunteersbringtoourvisitors?

Thevolunteerprogramiscommittedtotrackinggrowthanddevelopment,ensuringthatwerecognizevolunteersintheircommitmenttoourmission,andtothecommunity.Wemaynotbeshoutingitfromapageinalocalnewspaper,butFortWhytevolunteersaremakingahugeimpact–“Changinghowyouseeourworld.Makingaworldofdifference”.

meet george Drad, a Fortwhyte alive volunteer for over 25 years. his contributions to the cause have been numerous, from school program interpreter to special events, but his true passion has been expressed in his dedicated efforts and initiatives related to birding.

BirdnestingboxesareGeorge’sspecialty.Hehaspersonallydriventheestablishment,

monitoringandmaintenanceofover170on-siteboxesthatboastsuccessfulnestingactivityeveryspring.Thegreatmajorityofboxes,builtbyGeorgehimself,aremadefromrecycledwoodthathescoutsout–oldfences,andevencountrybarns.ThislabouroflovehasresultedintheultimaterewardforGeorge’sefforts:theconfirmationof11nestingpairsofbluebirds,housedinspecialtyboxesalongFortWhyte’sbisonfencelinein2012.Yes,bluebirdsinthecityofWinnipeg!

GeorgehasalsocontributedtoFortWhyte’sWoodDuckconservationproject.Foryears,hehasbeenpartofateamofvolunteerswhosetup,inspectandrefurbishWoodDucknestingboxesforriverbankresidents.GeorgeisaharbingerofspringforprogramparticipantsalongtheWellingtonCrescent/Wolseleyriverbankroute.Hekick-startstheprograminearlyFebruary,takingchargeofbuildingupwardsof40WoodDuckboxestomeetthedemandsoftheseasonahead.IfyoucrosspathswithacongenialmancoveredinsawdustintheInterpretiveCentrethisspring,that’sGeorge!

namesmaysoundfamiliartoyou.Theyareallfamousconservationistsandbiologists,knowntheworldoverfortheirscientificworkinstudyingnature.Itmaybedauntingtolookattheachievementsofthesemenandtrytocompareyourselftothem.However,manygreatscientistsstartedtheircareersquitesimply,spurredonbyacuriositywhichmaybesharedbyyou.Theyweretheoriginalcitizenscientists;ordinarypeoplewithaloveandcuriousityofnature,whonoticedANDrecordedtheeventstheycouldseeintheworldaroundthem.

Therehasneverbeenabettertimetocontributetoscienceinyoursparetimethantoday.Thecitizenscientistmovementisgrowingeveryyearasnewprojectsareputforwardorexpanded.Acitizenscientistisaregularpersonwhoisabletowitnessnaturaleventsandreporttheirfindings.Youdonotneedtobeanexpertinordertoparticipateinaground-breakingscientificstudy,nordoyouneedtocommitallofyoursparetime.Helpingoutcanbeassimpleasreportinga

monarchbutterflythathaslandedonyourlawn,orrecordingthefirstAmericanRobinyouseeinspring.

Therearemanyprojectsthataresuitableforbeginners.ThenewlylaunchedRinkWatchprogramisagreatexampleofasimplestudyforthoselookingtogettheirfeetwet.Theorganizersarelookingforinputfromcitizenscientistsacrossthecountryastowhenlocaloutdoorrinksarefirstopenedfortheseason,andclosedfortheyear.Bycomparingthesedatesfromyear-to-year,theycanestimatethelocaleffectsofclimatechangeandthepotentialconsequencesfacingCanada’sgame.Otherprojectsbenefitfromexpertiseorextendedtimecommitments,suchastheManitoba’sBreedingBirdAtlas–howeverinputfromnovicebirdersiswelcomedaswell.Ifyouseeagosling,duckling,oranyotherevidenceofbirdsbreedinginManitoba,theywouldlovetohavethatinformationintheirrecords.

Manyoftheseprojectshavewebsiteswhicharegreatsourcesofinformationtohelpyouwithidentificationandreporting.

TheManitobaHerpsAtlasislookingforrecordsofreptilesandamphibians(herpetofauna)inManitoba.Theirwebsitecanhelpyouproperlyidentifymanydifferentspeciesoffrogsandsnakesyouwillcomeacrossinthisprovince.Allthatisrequiredisforyoutoreportanysightingsofamphibiansandreptileswhileyou’reoutandaboutinManitoba.Thisinformationwillhelpconfirmwheretheseanimalslive,andwhentheywillwakeupfromtheirwinterslumber.

Lastspring,FortWhyteFarmsstaffplantedsomeasparaguscrownsinourgardens.

Establishingasparagusistheultimateexerciseinpatience.Unlikeothercrops,wheretheseedsyousowinthespringyieldwonderfulvegetablesafewweeksormonthslater,asparagusmaytakeseveralyearsbeforeyoucanharvestandenjoythetendershoots.Eachyearproducesnewgrowth–somevisibleabovethesoilsurface,butmost,(perhapsmoreimportantly)outofourviewbeneaththesoil,allowingtheplanttocomebackstrongereachyeartothepointwhereitcanbeharvested.ThisisagreatmetaphorforwhathappensatFortWhyteFarmswithouryouthparticipantsandthenewestfacetofourever-evolvingyouthdevelopmentprogramming.

FortWhyteFarmshasbeenfortunateoverthelastseveralyearstohavehadsomeverydedicatedyoungpeopleworkwithus–movingfromourwinterandspringprogramming,toour2-monthsummerinternshipemploymentpositions,andfinallyinto6-monthFarmAssistantpositions.Aswithasparagus,eachyearattheFarmgraduallyproducesnewgrowth,somevisibleandsomebelowthesurface.Thisgrowthhasallowedfarmstaffto‘harvest’theskills,strengthsandabilitiesthathavedevelopedintheseindividualseachyear.Forinstance,inthelastseveralyears,thelion’sshareoftheworkinourapiaryhasbeenledbyFarmAssistantEthanNobiss.Ethanbuiltuphisbeekeepingskillsoverseveralyearstothepointwherehewasabletomanagetheapiarywithminimalguidance.

Thisiswheretheasparagusmetaphorends.

WhileitmaybetemptingforFortWhytetocontinuetoprovideseasonalemploymentandtokeep‘harvesting’theskillsoftheseyoungpeopleyearafteryear,weknowthatthisisnotintheirbestlong-terminterests.

Thispresentsachallenge:astheseyoungpeoplemoveawayfromtheseseasonaljobs,FortWhyteFarmsisleftwithagapinknowledgethatmustbefilledbyotherfull-timestaffwhomaynothavethetimenecessarytodedicatetotheapiaryoperation,whichrequiressomeveryspecificskillsandknowledge.Wewouldalsoliketoallowthoseexperiencedyouthtocontinuetodeveloppersonalself-reliance,applythedirectagriculturalskillstheyhavelearnedatthefarm,cultivatenewskillsandearnincomethroughentrepreneurship.

In2013,wewillbepilotinganewinitiative–anindependentyouth-operatedfarmingbusinessthatwillcontractwithFortWhyteFarmstomanageourbeehives.Initially,threeofourformerFarmAssistantswilloperatethisbusiness.Toassistwithstart-up,theywillbegiftedourbeehivesandbeekeepingequipment.TheywilltakepartinaBuildaBusinesstrainingprogramthroughSEEDWinnipeg.

FortWhytewillpurchaseanyhoneyproducedbytheyouth,buttheycanalsomarketelsewhere.Inthefuturetheirbusinesscouldincludemarketgardeningandlivestockproduction,aswellasvalue-addedproducts.Thepossibilitiesareendlessandweareexcitedaboutthepotentialthatthisnewventureholds–yetanothermilepavedontheRoadtoSelf-Reliance.
