Spring 2012 Research Paper Requirements and Assignments

Minimum of seven full pages; approved topic from text.At leastseven academic sources. One of the seven sources must comefrom our text.

All assignments must be typed in MLA format.

Keep this key question in mind as you are doing research, taking notes, andwriting your paper:

Why is this information important?

You are not writing a report, which would be a summary of information available about the

subject. Instead, your topic needs an edge to it. You need to make a case: take a position and

support it with reasons and evidence. Your thesis needs to address the complexity of the issue.

Your thesis and paper must acknowledge and respect differing views.

You must have the information at your fingertips, so that you can synthesize it, presenting the

most important information in the order you feel most effective. Your choice of material and

your insight will put your personal stamp on the topic.

Topic Choices:

Review the topics and essays inNavigating America (Section III).

Select one, e.g. Advertising, to use as an umbrella topic for your research. You will then use oneof the essays in that section to help you narrow the focus of your research. The essay you choose

must be cited in your paper.

Citing Sources:

Follow MLA format precisely.

Be sure to give the credentials of each source the first time you use it in your paper.

Summarize and paraphrase your sources; use direct quotations only when the language is soeffective that a paraphrase weakens its effectiveness.

No more than 15% of the paper should be quotations.

You must cite in your paper all the sources listed on the Works Cited page. You must list on the Works Cited page all the sources cited in the paper.

Plagiarism: Students whose final drafts show evidence of plagiarism will earn zeroes for the

Research Paper.
