New Exhibit Opens

NewEnglandinthenineteenthcenturywasaturningpointforbothwomenandwriters,shapedbynewvoicesfromsuffragettestoTran-scendentalists.MaryBakerEddy’sownstoryiscloselywovenintothislargernarrative,fromherbeginningsasayounggirlwhosefatherbelievedthatherbrainwas“toolarge”forherbody,tohertriumphasacelebratedauthorandpublisherattheturnofthetwentiethcentury.

Through this recreated space, and the historic photographs reproduced behind it, visitors will see that Eddy’s study was a flurry of activity...

Thisyear’sexhibit,Impressions on Paper: Mary Baker Eddy, Writer,bringsEddy’sstorytolife.BycarefullyconsultinghistoricphotographsandminingtheLibrary’sextensivecollections,ourstaffhaspulledtogetherobjectsfromEddy’sPleasantViewstudyinordertocreatean

extraordinaryexperienceforourvisitor.Mov-ingbeyondobjectsinacaseorphotographsonapanel,visitorsareinvitedtoviewEddy’splatformrocker,completewithdrapedshawl,aswellasthedeskwhereshespenthourseverydaywritingletters,arrangingtheaffairsoftheChristianSciencemovement,andworkingonherbook,Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Throughboththisrecreatedspace,andthehistoricphotographsreproducedbehindit,visitorswillseethatEddy’sstudywasaflurryofactivity,filledwithpilesofbooksandpaper,meaningfuldecorations,andafewnotablepiecesoflatenineteenthcenturytechnology.

Yettheexhibitgoesbeyondthearrangementofobjects.ThroughEddy’sownwordsandthewordsofthosewhoknewher,Impressions on PapercarriesthevisitorthroughEddy’sdevel-opmentasawriter.Panelsoftextenclosethestudy,complementedbyaninteractivekiosk,enablingthevisitortoexplorewhytheseobjectsaresignificant.Evenforthosefamiliarwithherwritings,thisexhibithighlightsnewconnectionsandinsightsintothecomplexitiesofnineteenth

New Trustee on The Mary Baker Eddy Library Board

InDecember2011,theBoardofTrusteesannouncedtwochangesinitsleadership.BrianPennix,whoservedfromSeptember22,2004toDecember31,2011,steppeddownasaTrustee.TheLibrarythanksBrianforhisunwaveringdedica-tionasbothaTrusteeandSecretaryoftheLibrary,andforhisgreateffortsinmovingtheLibrary’smis-sionforwardoverthepastsevenyears.

TheBoardisalsohappytoannouncetheelectionofLisaStepanskiasanewTrustee,asofJanuary2012.LisaisafullprofessoratEmmanuelCollegeinBoston,andteachescoursesinAmericanlitera-tureandwriting.Sherecentlypublishedherfirstbook,The Home Schooling of Louisa May Alcott.LisacomestotheLibrarybywayoftwosummerre-searchfellowships,in2009and2010,duringwhichsheresearchedboththefriendshipbetweenMaryBakerEddyandBronsonAlcott,andtheChurch’suseofmoderntechnologies.In2010,shewasafeaturedspeakerintheLibrary’sprogram“RadicalMinds,RadicalTimes:EddyandtheAlcotts,”avail-ableatmbelibrary.org/videosonourwebsite.LisacontinuesherresearchandwilldeliverapaperonMaryBakerEddyattheAmericanLiteratureAssociationAnnualConferenceinMay.

Artifactsmustbeproperlystoredwithinsafematerials,suchasacidfreeboxesandpaper.Curatorsensurethisandcarefullymonitortheenvironmentinwhichobjectsarestoredorexhibitedtomaintaintheleastdamaginglightlevel,temperature,andrelativehumidity.

Witheachnewexhibit,curatorslooktofindobjectsthatwillilluminateEddy’slifeandtimes,butareinsoundenoughconditiontostanduptotherigorsofexhibition—exposuretolightforextendedperiodsoftime,variationsintempera-tureandrelativehumidity,andeventhevibra-tionsthatmayoccurwhensomeoneacciden-tallybumpsanexhibitcase.

Thecuratorspainstakinglyexamineeachartifactchosenforexhibitsandcarefullyplanhowtobestkeepthemsafewhileondisplay.Attimes,conservationofanartifactisneededtomakeitsafeforexhibit.TheLibraryisfortunatetohaveadedicatedconservationlabwheresmallerarti-factsarepreparedforexhibitandwhereroutinetreatments,suchassurfacecleaning,uncompli-catedmending,andspecializedmount-making,aredone.

TheLibrary’snewestexhibit,Impressions on Paper,isrichwithartifactsfromMaryBakerEddy’sPleasantViewhome,allowingvisitors“apeepintomystudio”,touseEddy’sownwords(The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscel-lany,258).Formostofthe30artifactsexhibited,lightvacuumingandsurfacecleaningwereallthatwasneeded.Amoreinvolvedconservationtreatmentwascarriedoutforthreesmalltextilepiecesthatrequiredwetcleaning.

Notallconservationcanbedoneonsite.Forexample,thewickerrockingchair,onviewinFinding PeacefromApril2010toMarch2011,requiredtreatmentbeforeitcouldbeexhibited.Astheworkrequiredwasextensive,thechairwassenttoexpertswhospecializeintheconser-vationofthistypeofmaterial.

Behind the Scenes:Curators in Action

CuratorsPamWinsteadandAlanLestermayworkoutofviewatTheMaryBakerEddyLibrary,buttheyplayanactiveroleinmanyoftheactivitiesthatthepublicenjoyeveryday.Inadditiontoansweringapproximately300researchquerieseachyear,theymanageandcareforboththeLibrary’shistoricphotographcollectionanditsartifactcollection.

Managingthesecollectionsnotonlyentailsknowingwhatartifactsareinourholdingsbutalsotheirlocationsatanygiventime,andwhenandhowtheyhavebeenusedinthepast.UsingtheLibrary’sarchive,photographcollection,andoutsideresources,curatorsresearchanddocu-menttherelationshipofeachobjecttothehis-toryofMaryBakerEddyandherlifeandideas.

ThisknowledgebasefuelstheLibrary’sexhibits,programs,onlinearticles,andpublicationslikethisnewsletter.Italsoassiststheworkofoutsidescholars,researchers,anddepartmentsofTheFirstChurchofChrist,Scientist.

TheMaryBakerEddyLibraryonceagainjoinedBoston’sFirstNightcelebrationonDecember31,2011.Thiscitywideeventaimstorevealandcelebratediversitybyusingartasacatalystandtounifythecommunitythroughcreativity,imaginationandparticipation.

WeenjoyedperformancesfromtheBostonArtSchoolforChineseMusic,ayouthdulcimergroup;theBackBayRingers,anadvanced,auditionedcommunityhandbellensemblebasedinBoston;andZiliMisik,anallfemaleHaitian,BrazilianandWestAfricanrhythmsgroup.TheLibrarywasopenfrom10:00a.m.to5:00p.m.forthisevent.Otheractivitiesincludedanexhibitbasedscavengerhunt,winter-themedcrafts,facepaintingandstorytelling.Hotciderandcocoawereprovidedinthecaféarea,alongwithsugarcookies.Ourstaffdidawonderfuljobonthisdayofcommunityactivity,aswewelcomed1,024visitorsthroughourdoors.

Drawingupontheexhibit’sfeatureonmilitarychaplains,BostonUniversityprofessorsDr.Shel-leyRamboandReverendMichelleWalshbe-gantheseriesinJanuarywithapresentationontheologicalresponsestotheafter-effectsofwarandotherlikeexperiences,oftenreferredtoaspost-traumaticstressdisorder.

TheseriescontinuedinFebruarywithReverendDr.CarlScovel,MinisterEmeritusofBoston’sKing’sChapel,andJudyHuenneke,theLibrary’sSeniorResearchArchivist.

Theydiscussed“SpiritualWritinginResponsetoCrisis”andexploredthespiritualautobiog-raphiesoftwotrailblazingwomentheologians:JulianofNorwich,afourteenthcenturyanchor-ess,andMaryBakerEddy,anineteenthcenturyreligiousandscientificthinker.Althoughseparat-edbycenturies,thesewomenwereexceptionalinarticulatingoriginalspiritualthoughtduringtimesofmaledominationintheologicalmatters.

Forthelastprogramintheseries,theLibraryhosted“WomeninMilitaryMinistry.”Thekey-notespeakersinMarchwereChaplain(Lt.Col.)(Ret.)DianaJames,Chaplain(Col.)(Ret.)JanetHorton,andChaplainCandidate(2ndLt.,USAF)SamanthaLarason.JamesandHortondiscussedtheirexperiencesasfemalepioneersinmili-tarychaplaincy;theywerethethirdandfourthwomenrespectivelytoeverserveaschaplainsintheUnitedStatesArmy.

TheLibrarywaspleasedtohostKeithCollinsforhistalkabouthisjust-publishedbook The Chris-tian Science Monitor: Its History, Mission, and People,thefirstcomprehensivehistoryofthisacclaimedinternationalnewsorganizationsincethepublicationin1958ofCommitment to Free-dom: The Story of the Christian Science MonitorbyErwinD.Canham.Andmuchhaschangedinover50years.

Collins,anexperiencedjournalistandMonitorcontributorformorethan20years,examinedtheoriginsofthisinternationalnewsorganiza-tioninthelifeandvisionofitsfounder,MaryBakerEddy.Healsochronicledhowithasad-vancedandfaredinitscallingtoprovideahighstandardofjournalismthatis,asEddymandat-ed,solutionoriented,injuresnoman,butbless-esallmankind.Inrecentyears,thishasincludedthetransitiontoaWeb-firstformatandsettinganewinstitutionalrecordofover40millionpageviewsinJanuary2012alone.

MonitorEditor,JohnYemma,gavetheopeningremarksforthistalk.Hedescribedthebookasgivinga“usefulhistory”ofthenewssource,andacknowledgedthedeepvaluethatCollinsplacesontheMonitor’sguidingjournalisticprincipleswhileassessingtheMonitor’ssuccessesandtrialsoveritsnowmorethan100yearhistory.

From the Archives: Spotlight on Walter Watson

TherecentreleaseofVolume1oftheexpand-ededitionofWe Knew Mary Baker Eddyhasbroughtrenewedattentiontothemanyremi-niscencesinthecollectionsofTheMaryBakerEddyLibrary.Whileanumberofindividualswereincludedinthebook,therearemanyoth-erswhoseaccountsremainunpublished.WalterWatsonisonesuchindividual,andthoughhispersonalinteractionswithEddywerefew,arecountingofhisexperienceswithChristianSci-encegivesthereaderaviewintohisburgeoningfaith.

A highlight of Watson’s reminiscence is his telling of bringing the first issue of TheChristianScienceMonitor to Eddy at her home at Chestnut Hill on Wednesday, November 25, 1908.

WalterW.Watsonwasbornin1853intheNewHampshiretownofSalisbury,oneofninechildren.HegrewupinLittleton,NewHamp-shire,andmethisfuturewife,AdaHatch,therewhenshecametoboardathisparents’house.Theymarriedin1876.ThecouplefirstheardofChristianSciencewhilelivinginLittleton.Attherequestofsometownspeople,JuliaBartlettvis-itedthecommunitytodiscussthisnewsystemofhealingin1884.(WhiletheWatsonsarenotmentionedspecifically,pages72-74intheneweditionofWe Knew Mary Baker EddydiscussBartlett’striptoNewHampshire.)

Inafewweeks,AdaWatsonwashealedoflongyearsoffrailhealth,andthecoupleembracedChristianScience.AdawouldlaterbecomeamemberofTheMotherChurchin1892(Walterjoinedin1894),andaChristianSciencehealerwhooccasionallyhelpedoutatEddy’shomeinConcord,NewHampshire,asacook.

In1885thecouplemovedtoBoston,whereMaryBakerEddywasleadingafledglinggroupofChristianScientistsfromherhome,whichalsoservedastheMassachusettsMetaphysicalCollege.

Walter’sreminiscencetellsofthegrowthofChristianScienceinBoston,describingSundayservicesatHawthorneHallwithanattendanceoftwohundredgrowingtothousandsbythetimeTheMotherChurchExtensionwascom-pletedin1906.

WatsonwasoneofthefirstushersatChristianScienceservicesandservedinthispositionforovertwentyyears.HedescribesthedutiesoftheushersintheearlydaysbeforetheOriginalEdificewasbuiltasseeing“thateverythinginthehallwasinorder,bringinginextraseatsifneededandpassingouttheprogramsbeforetheservice.Wealsohadtoputthehymnalsout—wehadnoChristianSciencehymnalthen,butusedacollectionoforthodoxhymns”(34).

Walter’slastdayasanusherwasthededica-tiondayoftheExtension:June10,1906.Duetothethousandsofpeopleattendingsixservices,thereweretwohundredushersonhand.Itwasafarcryfromhisfirstdaysinthisposition,whenWatsonwasoneoftwoushersforoneSundayservice!

In1900,WalterbecamethefirstregularjanitoratTheChristianSciencePublishingSociety.Thiswasapositionhefilledfor22years.Hisrespon-sibilitiesincluded

...firingtwofurnacesinthewinter,keep-ingthesidewalksclearofsnow,washingfloorsandwindows,sweepinganddust-ingandputtingthingsinorder.Ineverknewwhatitwastohaveregularhours,arrivingaboutfiveo’clockinthewintermorningstostartthefiresandoftentimestoshoveloffheavysnowssothatthewaywouldbeclearbeforeanyonecametowork,andusuallystayinguntilverylateatnight,sometimesthisbeingtheonlyopportunityIhadtogettheroomsstraightenedoutforthenextday.(70-71)

AhighlightofWatson’sreminiscenceishistellingofbringingthefirstissueofThe Christian Science MonitortoEddyatherhomeinChestnutHillonWednesday,November25,1908.“ItwasallsecurelywrappedandtiedwithpinkribbonandIcarrieditascarefullyasifIhadbeentransport-ingthecrownjewels”(96).

In1932,whenWatsonwrotehisreminiscence,hewasstillworkingforthePublishingSociety,butasawatchman.Hespeaksoftheapprecia-tionandgratitudeforhavinghad“evenasmallpartinthisgrandorganization”(103).WatsondiedinJanuaryof1934.

Dr.BrakeisatheologyteacherandDeanEmeritusoftheMultnomahBiblicalSeminaryinPortland,OR.HeistheauthorofA Visual History of the English Bible: The Tumultuous Tale of the World’s Bestselling BookandA Visual History of the King James Bible: The Dramatic Story of the World’s Best-Known Transla-tion.BrakeisalsoanavidcollectorofrareBiblesandGreekNewTestamentsandhasoneofthemostimpressiveprivatecollectionsofthesebooksinNorthAmerica.

AmongthebookscollectedandpreservedbyTheMaryBakerEddyLibrary,Dr.Brakejudgedseveraltobequitehistoricallysignificant,includingfirsteditionsofthe1537Matthew’sBible,a1539GreatBible,anoctavoeditionofTyndale’s1550NewTestament,a1560GenevaBible,anda1568Bishops’Bible.Dr.Brake’srealsurprise,however,wasindiscoveringafirstedition1535CoverdaleBible.AccordingtoDr.Brake,“AfirsteditionCoverdaleBibleisarguably,themostimportantEnglishBibleforacollection.Whiletherearequiteafewcopiesworldwide,theyareprimarilyfoundinwellestablishedandfamouslibrariesandmuseums.”

FollowinghisvisittoBoston,Dr.Brakepublishedanarticleabouthisfindings,“ABiblecollector’sunexpecteddiscoveryinanunlikelyplace,”whichwasfea-turedonCommunitiesatWashingtonTimes.com.
