Message from the President

Announcing the publication of FREEPORT

Regina G. Feeney and Cynthia J. Krieg wrote a book, Freeport, published by Arcadia Press for the Images of America Series which will be released May 7, 2012. It costs $21.99 and all proceeds will be donated to the Freeport Historical Society. If you want to reserve a copy, email us at [email protected] or leave a message at the Museum – 516-623-9632.

The book is 128 pages long with over 225 pictures.

Founded in the mid-1650s, Freeport was originally a hamlet of farmers and baymen and was famous for its oysters. In the late 1880s, developers John J. Randall and his partner, William G. Miller, increased their real estate acreage by filling the lowlands from canals, such as Woodcleft and Randall's Bay. Hotels sprung up, and Freeport became a popular destination, drawing the rich and famous to the area's beautiful beaches and seaside ac-tivities. Entertainers found Freeport a perfect place to relax, so in the early 20th century they formed the Long Island Good Hearted Thespian Society (LIGHTS) Club and erected a world-famous clubhouse. Along with a rich entertainment history, boating and fishing (both sport and commercial) abound here. The Nautical Mile is a working port with docks for commercial fishing boats, boat dealers, boutiques, and fabulous restaurants

We’re 50!

The Freeport Historical Society and Museum will be celebrating our 50th anniversary on a Sunday afternoon event in July at a most unusual Freeport historical site. Planned are a catered dinner, entertainment and a tour through a place that was featured in the Science Channel’s TV series, the JUNKies. You won’t want to miss it. More information will follow.

We also will be producing a journal that will feature lots of pictures of Freeport. If you can’t take an ad, please consider being a booster.
