President’s MessageBy Robert W. Loewen
his year marks the 50th anniversary of the LincolnClub. I have therefore selected the following excerptsfrom remarks by Dr. Arnold O Beckman, the foundingPresident of the Lincoln Club, at the Annual Dinner
on May 9, 1963. at his words are still relevant in the current political environment could not be more poignant, and after 49years, it is easily apparent that the Lincoln Club’s adherence to itsfounding principles has been steadfast.
EXCERPTS FROM ARNOLD BECKMAN’S SPEECH – MAY 9, 1963 LINCOLN CLUB DINNER
1. Background of Lincoln Club
e idea of the Lincoln Club arose from the 1962 election. A fewof us who had been active in the election were dismayed at the waythe campaign was handled. e primary was a vicious one, in whichintemperate remarks of Republican candidates created havoc withinthe Party. For some offices the Republican candidates elected in theprimary were of such unimposing stature that most Republicansfound it difficult to support them enthusiastically. Large sums ofmoney were wasted, and some sources of substantial contributionsfor future campaigns were seriously antagonized. So, licking ourwounds, a group of us resolved to try to do something about the sadsituation. We would not repeat these mistakes and we would try totake constructive action that would lead, not only to unity withinthe Republican Party, but to the development and election of su-pericr candidates to public office.
2. Lincoln Club Plan
e plan is to build up a small, select group of leading citizens ofOrange County who are concerned over the need for good govern-ment and are willing to do something about it. e members mustcommand respect in the community and should be adequatelyknown so that their opinions will have an influence among a size-able portion of the community. ey should be persons of sound, mature judgment. ey should have a stake in the community sothat any financial contribution they make will be more than a civiccontribution, it will be a prudent business investment.
Each member should be an independent thinker, under obligationto no one.
It is expected that opinions of the mem-bers will cover the whole spectrum ofviews of the Republican Party. e Clubmust never come under the dominationof any one group; care must be takenthat members of the Board of Directorsand committees are selected so as to insure proper representationof the varying viewpoints. To maintain the objective of presentinga solid, united front to the outside while preserving within the Clubthe advantages of free discussion and examination of all shades ofopinion, members should be imaginative leaders, able to examinedifferent views objectively and to reconcile conflicting opinions.
Why did we choose the name “Lincoln Club” ? e reason is thatLincoln today is recognized by all Americans as the outstandingsymbol of good government, the Club’s objective. His personalcharacteristics were those we should strive to find in all governmentofficials and, indeed, also in the members of the Lincoln Club. A re-cent issue (May 10, 1963) of Time Magazine has a lengthy articleon Lincoln, from which I shall quote a few sentences to illustrate theclose parallelism between Lincoln and his problems and the goalsand problems of the Club.
First, Lincoln maintained his independent individuality, as the Clubmust retain its independence. I quote:
“Sense of Destiny. He was neither a rebel nor a conservative, but aconserver. He was no artist, except in using public language and inusing men. His life was an infinitely varied mixture of leading andfollowing, conforming and defying. He could temporize, compro-mise, and maneuver. But he always held to his own vision and metthe exacting definition of an individual set down by French Philoso-pher Georges Bernanos: “A man who gives himself or refuses him-self, but never lends himself.’
“Above all, Lincoln was an individual in the special double sensethat Americans attribute to the word--the common man who is yetuncommon. Second, we are confronted with the task of reconcilingdifferences of opinion within the Republican Party which seeminglystretch from the ultra-liberals to the ultra-conservatives, to unite allRepublicans plus, we hope, many Democrats, sc that a solid frontcan be presented in the fight for good government. Time Magazinequotes Lincoln’s biographer, Benjamin P. omas. Lincoln’s task was“To hold together in wartime a party made up of abolitionists andNegro-haters: high- and low-tariff men, hard- and soft-money men, former Whigs and erstwhile Democrats, Maine law prohibitionists

few Board meetings ago, I posed a question to thosein attendance: What value do you think LincolnClub membership offers?
It’s an important question. One that I think is prob-ably going to vary greatly. But here are some potential ways to an-swer a friend or colleague that may be interested in membershipif they pose that question to you:
1. Staying informed. One of the biggest values of the Club isbeing able to see, hear from, and meet with some pretty amaz-ing speakers. Just in the last few months, the Club has hostednotable Congressmen, like Allen West, and the vice prime min-ister of Israel. Members can not only stay on top of the criticalissues of our day but can meet them and ask candid questions, often in relatively small settings.
2. Effecting change. One of my pred-ecessors used to say the Club is likea political mutual fund. Membersinvest resources into the Club’sPACs, and together, they can ‘in-vest’ in campaigns and effect changeon a larger scale than they could have as individuals.
3. Meeting great people. Ask any member who has been in theClub for a few years why they continue to be a part of it and‘friendships’ is the most often cited answer. Once a member de-cides to get engaged, to attend events, or join a committee, heor she will inevitably meet some great people who share similarvalues that they will develop friendships with.
I’d like to hear from you – What value do you think membershipoffers? Drop me a line at [email protected].

Why did you decide to join the Lincoln Club? What attracted you to the Club?
I joined the Lincoln Club of Orange County because it is anaction-oriented organization intent on gathering like-mindedindividuals that work together, raise support, and advocate forthe founding ideals of this country and today’s elected officialsthat will move this agenda forward.
What do you consider to be the most important political orpublic policy issue? What issues are you most passionateabout?
I believe there is no greater issue facing this country today thaninsisting on valuing every human life - from conceptionthrough natural death. Our forefathers encoded “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” into our Declaration of Inde-pendence and, I believe, Life is mentioned first because, with-out it, the rest matters not! Other issues I am passionate about
include freedom of religion, equalaccess, health care, and immigration.
If you could hand-pick the nextU.S. president, who would youchoose and why?
I would hand-pick Rick Santorum because, of the current can-didates, I truly believe he best-reflects the ideals this countrywas founded on and he demonstrates such. Without the rightfoundation to build upon, any candidate is more-easily proneto failure.
What is something that most people may not know about you?
I come from a very large family tree... as an example, I am one ofa group of over 100 first cousins! at’s a lot to keep up with butit is an amazing blessing.

and German beer-drinkers, Know-Nothings and immigrants ...“Modern man lives in many overlapping groups; in each, he mustfind his place, must have his say, must leave his mark, if he can. Ina way, this requires him to be a politician in the highest meaning of the word. Politics is the real means of mediation be-tween the individual and the group. is was Lincoln’s genius.Today’s Americans, enmeshed in community, can only wish for Lin-coln’s qualities – he was politic without being unprincipled, patientwithout being resigned, flexible without being opportunistic, tough-minded without being brutal, determined without being fanatical, religious without being dogmatic or unworldly, tender withoutbeing sentimental: and devoted to man without worshiping him.”
During his lifetime Lincoln made many profound statements, someof which may be even more meaningful today than in his time. Forthe Lincoln Club slogan we have adopted his admonition, “In allthat the people can individually do as well for themselves, govern-ment ought not to do for them.”
For those of you who may have become discouraged over recent political developments and may feel we can’t do much toimprove the situation, please consider well these quotationsfrom Abraham Lincoln:
1. e power of hope upon human exertion and happiness is wonderful.
2. Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is moreimportant than any other thing.
3. I say “try”; if we never try, we shall never succeed.

LINCOLN CLUB

Why did you decide to join the Lincoln Club? What attracted you to the Club?
I joined because I like the Lincoln Club’s mission statement, in-teresting programs, and fellow Club members. Furthermore, Ibelieve the Lincoln Club needs a voice within my demo-graphic. Young adults in their 20’s are passively voting demo-cratic because it’s the popular thing to do. at needs tochange, and I look forward to spreading the Club’s message.
What do you consider to be the most important political orpublic policy issue? What issues are you most passionateabout?
ere are many important political and public policy issues.Generational theft, entitlement programs, and the fact that life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are rights that precededgovernment (not things to be granted by it) are my top issues.
If you could hand-pick the nextU.S. president, who would youchoose and why?
USA Today has a Candidate MatchGame, where you weigh in on 11 issues and the program spitsout the top three candidates most aligned with your beliefs. It’sa silly exercise, but I decided to play. My top three were RonPaul, Newt Gingrich, and Mitt Romney, respectively. AlthoughI am a huge fan of Ron Paul (he is a hybrid between my grand-father and Magneto from X-Men), he does not exude thepower necessary of a president... unfortunate since his messageis on point. And, although I find the idea of pompous Gin-grich debating Obama very amusing, I do not believe Gingrich(or any candidate other than Romney) is electable.
What is something that most people may not know about you?
I worked my way through college and law school by modelingand working as a medical research assistant/grant writer.

From national security to statewide tax issues, Clubmembers have heard a variety of speakers on a variety oftimely topics.
Here’s a quick recap:
In January, the Club hosted an intimate roundtable breakfast withMichelle Steel, Republican member of the Board of Equalizationand the highest ranking Republican woman in the state. Whilethis tax Board may seem relatively obscure, it is a powerful bu-reaucracy that is charged with collecting property taxes, sales taxes, and a myriad of state fees.
Also in January, the Club partnered with the Republican JewishCoalition to host a sold-out lunch with Vice Prime MinisterMoshe Ya’alon, who discussed the imminent threat of a nuclearIran to Israel and the misperceptions widely spread by Westernmedia as to the cause of the Arab-Isreali conflict.
Club members heard from a panel of Republican congressmen onthe topic of healthcare reform in January, thanks to Club member
Dr. Marcy Zwelling. Rep. Pete Sessions and two Louisiana membersof the House Doctors Caucus, Rep.John Fleming and Rep. Bill Cassidy, discussed and listened to members’concerns about Obamacare and ideasfor reform.
Last fall, the Club hosted several Tea Party favorites. First, Rep.Allen West of Florida who delivered a stirring speech about Amer-ican exceptionalism, and Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina. Both are rising conservative stars to watch out for in the future.
In October, the Club hosted a panel on immigration reform, priorto the Club members’ vote on its Immigration Policy Statement.
is coming election year promises another slate of equally impressive speakers. Our new “Freedom Forum” speaker series willbring speakers such as Rep. Darrell Issa (March 15), the hilariousconservative pundit Jonah Goldberg (April 16), and Deroy Mur-dock (Aug. 23). Mark your calendars – more to come!
Programs Committee Update
F
By Michael Reynolds, Legislative Committee Chairman
fter a fairly quiet 2011, the Legislative Commit-tee is gearing up for what promises to be a verybusy election season in 2012. Six ballot measureshave already qualified for the June and Novem-
ber 2012 elections. ese cover issues ranging from legislativeterm limits and cigarette taxes to legislative “rainy day” funds, auto insurance premiums and clean drinking water. So far, nothing about Indian gaming, wealth taxes or bonds to coversomething for the environment (or better yet, for the children).Yet it’s hard to imagine an election without at least one of thesetopics on the ballot.
One of the brighter spots on the ballot this year will be the“Stop Special Interests Money Now Act,” which will prohibitcorporations and unions from making unauthorized deduc-tions from paychecks to finance their political activities. Passageof this measure is vital to California’s future. Naturally, left-wing interests, the Democratic Party and their public employeeunion financiers will be fighting this tooth-and-nail.
e Legislative Committee’s mainpurposes are (1) to review, analyze andevaluate pending ballot initiatives andlegislation of significance at the stateand local level and (2) to report backand recommend appropriate coursesof action to the Club’s Board of Directors or general member-ship – which can include positions, endorsements and/or fi-nancial support. We often host guest speakers, includinginitiative proponents, initiative opponents and Orange Countylegislators at the municipal, state and federal level.
With six ballot initiatives already qualified, and six to ten moreexpected, we will need all the help we can get.
We meet at 5:15 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month atGibson, Dunn & Crutcher, 3161 Michelson Drive, 12thFloor, Irvine. Please join us for our next meeting.

ith the gravity of the upcoming Presidentialelection, the Issues Committee will be for-mulating a series of brief messages which willtarget the typically Democratic demographic
groups: students, women, minorities, etc. e theme of these mes-sages will be “Did you know…?”. e Issues Committee will workwith the Communications Committee to deliver these messagesthrough the social networking sites.
e Issues Committee meets on the last ursday of the monthat 5:15 pm and, until recently, had been devoting this time to ei-ther of the two subcommittees: Immigration Reform Subcommit-tee led by Teresa Hernandez and Healthcare InnovationsSubcommittee led by doctors Marcy Zwelling, MD and JamesHuang, DO.
e Immigration Reform Subcommittee meets on the last Tues-day of the month at 5:15 pm. It has achieved its initial goal of for-mulating a reasonable policy on immigration reform and ofobtaining Board approval for this policy to become the official po-sition of the Lincoln Club. e remaining goal is to obtain the en-dorsement of as many Republican legislators and groups as possible.
anks to Teresa’s tireless efforts this re-maining goal is well under way.
e Healthcare Innovations Subcom-mittee meets on the third Tuesday ofthe month at 6 pm. e main goal ofthis subcommittee is to work with legislators and insurance andmedical associations toward the repeal of the Patient Protection andAffordable Care Act (Obamacare). Simultaneously the committee isformulating a list of insurance reforms which will be integral to the“repeal and replace” position of the Republican Party. e subcom-mittee position is in its final stages and will be soon presented to theIssues Committee for approval followed by a presentation to theBoard of Directors for final approval as the official position of theLincoln Club. As with the Immigration Subcommittee, the workwill be just beginning!
All of these meetings are at the offices of Gibson Dunn andCrutcher, 3161 Michelson Drive, 12th Floor, Irvine.
Any Lincoln Club member who has a passion for these issues is en-couraged to join any or all three of these committees. e more in-telligent input the better in accomplishing our goals.

ur committees have joined forces to tackle the im-portant task of evaluating candidates running forcity, county, state and federal offices in the 2012 elec-tion. While it seems early in the year, the committee
has already been preparing for the ‘busy period’ leading up to theNovember general election by revising our candidate questionnaireand discussing the interview and evaluation process.
Recently, we were approached to consider endorsements in severalprimary races. While the Club normally does not endorse in pri-maries where there are two or more Republicans running, the com-mittee felt the following candidates were worthy of endorsement:
• Congressman John Campbell, a former Lincoln Club member, who will represent the new 45th Congressional District. eBoard unanimously endorsed Campbell for re-election. Campbellwas recently named a “Defender of Economic Freedom” by theClub for Growth.
• Congressman Ed Royce for the newly drawn 39th CongressionalDistrict. e committee recommended endorsement when it appeared Rep. Gary Miller would run in the same district. Millerhas since decided to run in another district where the incumbentis retiring.
• State Senator Mimi Walters, incumbent in the 37th Senate District.
• Assemblyman Alan Mansoor is the incumbent in the newlydrawn 74th Assembly District and faces another Republican opponent in June.
• Assemblyman Curt Hagman, incum-bent in the 55th Assembly District
• Assemblyman Chris Norby, incum-bent in the 65th
• Assemblyman Don Wagner, incum-bent in the 68th
• Assemblywoman Diane Harkey,incumbent in the 73rd
• Supervisor Janet Nguyen, incum-bent in the First District, OC Boardof Supervisors
All of the committee’s recommendations were approved by a supermajority vote at the Club’s February and March Board of Directors meetings. e Club’s PAC Voter Guide can be found onthe website, www.lincolnclub.org, and more will be added in thecoming months.
If you are looking for a way to get involved in the Club, this is agreat committee to join. As the year goes on, we will need lots ofvolunteers to help interview city council candidates and others whorequest the Club’s endorsement. You can play a big role in who theClub endorses by joining this committee.
Contact us – [email protected] / [email protected] – formore information or just attend our next committee meeting. Wemeet on the first Wednesdays of the month at noon at Farmers &Merchants Bank, 4695 MacArthur Ct., Ste. 130, Newport Beach.

uilding the Club’s brand through social media willcontinue to be one of the main focuses of this com-mittee for the 2012 election year. Since welaunched a modest Facebook ad campaign last year,
the Club’s Facebook page (Facebook.com/LincolnClubOC)has more than 550 ‘likes’. Updates are posted daily to Face-book and Twitter, so find us on Facebook if you haven’t alreadyand share our page with your friends.
Each election cycle, the Club produces a Voter Guide whichlists the Club’s official candidate endorsements and positionson various ballot measures. e June primary will have a few
primary races and ballot measures ofinterest, so the committee will focuson how to promote the Club’s No-vember Voter Guide.
In addition to these tasks, we are al-ways looking for members who like to write blogs, which canbe very short commentaries about news items of the day, andgood writers, who can help pen opinion pieces that can be sub-mitted to local newspapers like the Register. Contact me ifyou’d like to help our committee spread the word about theLincoln Club’s news and views – [email protected].
