Peter Ricchiuti ’79 (left) is a finance professor, assistant dean, and director ofresearch at A.B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University in New Orleans. In 1993, he founded Burkenroad Reports, the Freeman equities research programthat targets “stocks under rocks.” He e-mails, “On Oct. 17, 2008, I traveled toOmaha with 27 Freeman School students to meet with Warren Buffett (right). Thestudents had a once-in-a-lifetime chance to interact with the Oracle of Omaha, and he had an opportunity to quiz them on Burkenroad Reports. Mr. Buffett builthis reputation by investing in companies that aren’t that well known, soBurkenroad Reports is right up his alley. I think he was impressed with the factthat we follow the same basic investment strategy he does. We’re valueinvestors, and we look for stocks that have been neglected by the market. Thestudents follow more than 40 companies in six states and produce in-depthinvestment research reports. Mr. Buffett is holding a personalized baseball bat wecustomized for him. The motto of the Burkenroad Reports program is ‘WallStreet’s Farm Team,’ and we have always used baseball themes. Oddly enough,we get the bats from my old Babson roommate, John Scheib ’80. John doessome work with a company that makes bats near his home in upstate New York. The bats are real maple major league bats, customized for corporate gifts. Mr.Buffett owns a minor league baseball team and loved the bat.” Ricchiuti plans toattend Reunion ’09 on Oct. 2–3 and will be one of its keynote speakers onSaturday. His talk is called, “Market Signals: What the Financial Markets AreTelling Us Now.”

Reagan Pollack ’07 cofounded WorldMusicLink in November 2008. “I hadbeen a member of a band for many years,” says Pollack. “I was aware of theproblems that musicians encounter in gaining exposure with the right profes-

sionals. I knew there was a disconnect in the industry, and I viewed the problem asan opportunity.”

Pollack estimates that there are 5 million indie bands in the U.S. and 150,000music industry companies. WorldMusicLink uses the Internet’s reach to connectmusic talent with record labels, managers, and promoters. The company offers twotypes of accounts, one that is free and supported by ads and one that is supportedby subscriptions.

A musician or band fills out a profile on WorldMusicLink.com and uploads mediacontent such as music, videos, and calendars. On the flip side, a promoter, who alsofills out a profile, searches for new talent to sign and promote. “Without leaving theoffice, a record label can field appropriate bands without sifting through thousandsof CDs,” says Pollack. “Similarly, band members can locate a label that’s seeking theirsound and type.”

According to Pollack, the global music industry is a $45-billion-a-year business, including ancillary products such as concerts, recordings, and merchandise. “Wewould like to raise venture capital and expand our international user base. A recordlabel from Africa should be able to findagents from the Netherlands and pro-ducers in Japan. Our goal is to put the‘world’ into WorldMusicLink.”

Pollack credits the company’s initialsuccess to its board of advisers, manyof whom are connected to Babson:Bob Jamieson ’68, former chair andCEO, RCA Music Group; Ted Grossman,P ’02, senior lecturer, information sys-tems; Bob Caspe, adjunct lecturer, marketing; Glenn Kaplus, MBA ’92,adjunct lecturer, entrepreneurship; andKuljit Dharni, MBA candidate and for-mer director, IT architecture.

Alicia Castillo Holley, MBA ’96 (front, second from right), e-mails from Perth,Australia, “After five years of work, I published Falling in Love With Your Life(www.fallinginlovewithyourlife.com) in October 2008. What started as a guide tosupport my daughter in her fight against depression grew from a family workbookinto a book, and later an e-course for my clients—and there is more to come! Littledid I know that I would use one of its tips when, right before its launch, I becameconcerned about the world’s financial crisis. Searching for ways to turn my worriesaround, I discovered a nonprofit organization in Bali, Indonesia, called I’m an Angel, and I made the short trip from Perth. Spending a day with hundreds of kids who werethrilled to have one hard-boiled egg and one glass of milk to supplement their dietchanged my world. This simple protein supplement once a week is all it takes toimprove their health significantly. Yes, once a week. I got in touch again with thoselittle things that make a big difference, and I donated the profits from my book’ssales last year to I’m an Angel. The total was about U.S. $1,000. It was a great way toturn a worry into something positive.”

Jennifer Green e-mails, “After gradua-tion, I piloted my social entrepreneurialventure, Generate Change, which enabledconsumers at retail stores to round uptheir total at the register to the nearestdollar and ‘generate change’ for a non-profit organization of the retailer’s choice.Unfortunately, after we piloted, the econ-omy forced me to put the organization onhold. Now I am proud to be the manag-ing director of Building Impact, a Boston-based organization working to increasecivic engagement and philanthropy inBoston, building by building. BuildingImpact delivers community engagementopportunities, such as volunteer eventsand donation drives, right to office build-ings and residential apartment buildings. The organization harnesses the collectiveenergy of individuals and companies livingand working within these buildings, andgenerates resources such as volunteers, mentors, and donated items to benefitmore than 20 nonprofit partners inGreater Boston. The organization cur-rently serves 45 buildings across GreaterBoston. This ‘building-centric’ approachto increasing civic engagement earned

Building Impact the Social Innovator’sAward in 2007, given each year by theSocial Innovation Forum. Every day Iapply what I learned at Babson toBuilding Impact as we help unlock thecivic potential of individuals and compa-nies right where they live and work.”
