The purpose of courses that fulfill the international education requirement is to challenge

students to understand our place within the world and to provide basic knowledge about cultures,

peoples, or nations beyond the borders of the United States. Such a course is designed to enable

students to investigate the pattern of world interactions; examine contemporary ideologies,

cultures, places, or political and economic systems found throughout the world; and become

open to the challenges and ambiguities of human plurality. The purpose of courses that fulfill

the historical perspectives requirement is to challenge students to understand and assess the

human past in order to form a clearer perception of the present and to deal more effectively with

current public issues. This course will enable students to demonstrate knowledge of the past;

explore the multitude of circumstances and events that have helped to shape historical

judgments, actions, and visions; and interpret the sources of historical change in a variety of

contexts.

TEXTS: There are four books which will be used for the course, all of which can be acquired at

the Textbook Center in Doudna Hall. The books are:

Goldschmidt and Boum, A Concise History of the Middle East, 11th Edition.

David Lamb, The Arabs: Journeys Beyond the Mirage, revised edition, 2002.

Geraldine Brooks, Nine Parts of Desire: The Hidden World of Islamic Women.

Joby Warrick, Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS, 2016.

EXAMS AND QUIZZES: There will be two exams, one which will take place at

approximately the middle of the term, and one that will take place during finals week. Both will

be essay exams that will cover the material presented in lectures as well as in the textbook.

There will also be two announced identification quizzes and three announced map quizzes. If

you need an accommodation due to a disability, please make an appointment to see me during

my office hours. A VISA from Services for Students with Disabilities authorizing your

accommodations will be needed. READING QUIZZES: Over the course of the semester there

will also be 9 announced Reading Quizzes, containing 3 questions each, covering sections from

each of the assigned books as well as the assigned handouts, except for the Goldschmidt book.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: I will not formally take attendance each day, but attendance at all

scheduled class periods is necessary and expected. If you miss a class, you are responsible for

finding out what material was covered, what assignments or handouts were distributed during the

missed class period, and/or for making arrangements with me to take any quiz or exam that was

missed or to hand in any assignments that were due. Students have the right to miss class for

religious observances. If you will miss a class for this reason, please let me know within the first

two days of class.
