Ladies and Gentlemen

Boys and Girls

It gives me great pleasure to be at the Opening Ceremony of the 19th Annual Sports Meet.   I would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to all participants and physical education teachers. It is the strong commitment to track and field, and to the development of our youth, is the reason why we have all gathered here .

This event speaks for the commitment that all of us in the school hold for the sport.  I am sure that we will witness athletic performances of the highest quality over the course of this championship.   Do your best and compete in the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play.   And take the opportunity to come closer to each other.

I would like to share with you this quote from Jesse Owens, the legendary American athlete who won four gold medals in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany.   It goes like this, “Friendships born on the field of athletic strife are the real gold of competition.   Awards become corroded, but friends gather no dust.”

Certainly, each of you will pit your skills and talents against your opponents from other teams.   But I encourage you to also make the most of this wonderful opportunity to showcase best athletic talent and spirit of comradeship.

I would like to give special praise and congratulations to the Sports staff which has exposed you to rigorous practice sessions. Their efforts have contributed in raising the overall standard of school sports competitions and building stamina.

I think few will dispute that sports make you strong, healthy and teach us to accept defeat and celebrate victory. These lessons later become building blocks of success in life.

As we head towards the final stretch of our preparations, we are focusing on building excitement in the community and encouraging people to embrace the spirit of the games’ motto - “Be the Legend” by showing their support for the competing athletes. In the coming days we are going to see some very exhilarating moments and I encourage everyone to enjoy it. Fun and excitement are guaranteed.

Indeed, the Annual Sports Meet will play a significant role in raising school’s sporting profile. In closing, I wish you every success and good health. I am delighted to declare the Annual Sports Meet Open.

Thank you very much.

- Honourable Prime Minister,- Mr. Mohd. Fazlur Rahman, Minister of Youth and Sport,- Mr.Mohd. Ali Asghar, President BCB,

distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, good evening on behalf of the International Cricket Council I welcome you all to the ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup.

It is with immense pleasure that the ICC brings the tournament to this cricket-loving country for the first time. The passion for cricket here is a joy to behold and I have no doubt that this nation will host a memorable event.

This is the fifth ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup. This particular event provides a preview of the great cricketers of the future.

From the U/19 World Cup first held in Australia in 1988 Brian Lara, Inzamam ul Haq and Sanath Jayasuriya emerged.

Subsequent events have seen the emergence of many great players including Virinder Sehwag, Graeme Smith, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Mohammad Sami.

Two years ago in New Zealand, Tatenda Taibu was named Man of the Tournament. He is now keeping wicket for the Zimbabwe national team and is the vice-captain of his country.

At this year's tournament there are players that already have full international experience. Nafis Iqbal, Talha Jubair and Enamul Haque have all played for the Bangladesh national team and Ravi Rampul has flown here directly from the West Indies tour of South Africa.

The standard of cricket will certainly be high.

Over the next 25 days the sixteen teams assembled here tonight will play 54 matches throughout the country.

This tournament is being organised on a larger scale than ever before. Matches will be played at more venues and in front of what we expect to be the biggest crowds in the event's history.

It is a huge undertaking but it has the strong support of the Bangladesh Government, the Bangladesh Cricket Board and the International Cricket Council.

Page 4: sppech

I therefore offer sincere thanks to Her Excellency the Prime Minister and the Government of Bangladesh for embracing the sport of cricket.I thank ICC's commercial partner, Global Cricket Corporation and our Global Partners - LG Electronics and Pepsi. Without their support an event of this scale would not be possible.

And I also thank our broadcast partners and the media who will help convey the vibrant and exciting spectacle to millions of cricket fans around the world.

The cricket world is expanding. Since 1997 over 40 new countries have joined the ICC. At this tournament, the holders Australia will be joined by former winners such as England and India. But also newcomers Uganda and other smaller cricket nations such as Papua New Guinea are taking part.

It is an exciting and diverse line-up.

And now it is time for the players to take centre stage.

I know that the people of Bangladesh will turn out to watch them perform and provide the support that they deserve.

Let us all enjoy this spectacle and respect the spirit of cricket.

Finally, as the teams get ready to depart to the venues around the country, I wish you all GOOD LUCK."

Chairperson’s Closing Speech on a Sports Event

Respected ______________ , teachers, students and guests.

Page 7: sppech

The fun filled sports week (or name of the event) comes to a conclusion today. The participants were at their best exhibiting the spirit of competition and enthusiasm. I am really thankful to you for providing us some very exciting moments. I congratulate the winners and the participants both because these parts make a whole of success.

Sports events such as this are meant to showcase the collective talent of the youth rather than only recognizing winners. A winner exists because someone dared to stand up and lose. For a height there has to be depth. I think the thrill of life is in holding up both.

Sports competitions fill us with enthusiasm which is a vital change in the cycle of routines. It inspires the participants and spectators both. They build physical stamina and teach us to take victories and defeats in our stride. Very important lessons of life are woven into these fights. A loser provides a winner a scale to measure his or her success.

Those who could not script victory on this occasion should not be disappointed but analyze their performance and set out on a further mission. You need to remember that the winner is not twice as much better than a runner up. The difference may be fraction of a fraction.

There are many fringe benefits of being an athlete. It gives you the confidence, strength and enhances physical productivity. You have the joy of eating well and looking good in your body enclosure. Sports teach us how to work in harmony with other people, exert whenever necessary, accept defeats with equal ease and work as a consolidated unit..

I believe you will continue to strive for excellence in the discipline you have already displayed a great deal of  promise. I really appreciate you for giving us this opportunity to

Page 8: sppech

celebrate and be proud of you.

Now enjoy the cultural feast which your schoolmates and teachers have specially prepared for you. After that it is time for all of us to resume our usual work and make best of the refreshed mind and show up on the next stage of success,  that is,  your academic performance.

I wish you greater success in future and hope your being a sports person will add to the glory of the game and the country both.

Thank you
