Voluntary Youth Sector providing young people with opportunities, activities and support
EditorialSurrey is a vibrant county with a dynamic and committed voluntary youth sector, dedicated to serving young people across the county. We have produced this Spotlight on Youth publication to showcase some of these fantastic youth providers to funders, politicians, employers and other key players around the county.
The organisations are listedw by their primary activity for young people, such as training, housing, projects etc; however, many of the organisations offer a huge range of services based on the needs of the young people they serve so the categorisation is only a rough guide. We know this list is not exhaustive so if you are a voluntary organisation offering services to young people in Surrey and would like to be listed in the next edition please do get in touch.
As you read this publication please consider how you might be able to connect and collaborate with these organisations to “significantly improve the lives of young people in Surrey”. You might have time to spare, cash to give, skills to impart – whatever it is, please get in touch and “give a little to get a lot”.
This publication has been compiled by Surrey Youth Focus with grateful thanks to Surrey County Council. Surrey Youth Focus is a charity championing the voluntary youth sector and empowering young people. We also play a key role in collaborations connecting the voluntary sector with statutory organisations, businesses, funders and other charities. If you would like more information please email [email protected] and follow us on Twitter @SurreyYF

Spotlight on...
CollaborationsHenry Ford said “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success”. Through Communilab we have seen some excellent examples over the past few months of organisations coming together to deliver some fabulous collaborations for young people. Not least the Surrey Safeguarding Young People Conference, which on behalf of Surrey County Council, brought together senior leads from across the voluntary youth sector, Surrey Police and Youth Support Service to discuss their concerns for young people. This work is continuing.
Surrey Young Superstars Awards continues to grow as collaboration between Haslemere Travel, Surrey Youth Focus and other partners to recognise young people for their contributions to their local communities through volunteering, fundraising as well as categories for courageous and caring young people. This event is planned again for May 2017, and we are actively looking for sponsors, so if you or anyone you know is keen to associate your name with the largest open entry Youth Awards Ceremony in Surrey, please contact us.
Epsom Youth Summit which, thanks to Community Foundation for Surrey and Cllr Mountain’s SCC members allocation, saw over 70 young people come together at Epsom College to identify issues around safe places to live, the environment, mental well being, relationships and employability. Working together with Surrey Youth Focus on this were Surrey Youth Collective, Surrey Police, Surrey County Council, Heads Together and Surrey Wildlife Trust. Following the Summit the young people have been drawing up their own action plans and made pledges for youth led solutions. We are looking for partners to come forward for Youth Summits in other towns across Surrey, so please get in touch.
And finally, Youth Work on the Pitch which is a football project in Park Barn which has reached over 40 young people and delivered as a partnership between Guildford Saints FC, Active Surrey – Sportivate, High Sheriff Youth Award, Surrey FA, Guildford Borough Council, the community wardens and Project Aspire.
Moving forward Surrey Youth Focus has begun a new collaboration on breaking down barriers to employment for young people with learning disabilities and another on young people’s voice. If you would like to get involved in any of these collaboration for young people please email us [email protected]

Spotlight on...
Young People’s VoiceMany of the voluntary youth organisations listed in this publication work with deprived young people, those who are NEET (not in employment, education or training) or those with additional needs.
Working together we can see the world through the eyes of the young person, gain a local and countywide insight into the needs of these young people, and truly understand the issues they face. We will then be more empowered to make positive changes to significantly improve the lives of young people in Surrey.
One example is a project funded by Healthwatch Surrey’s Community Cash fund which enabled Surrey Youth Focus and the young people attending the East Surrey YMCA to undertake a youth social action project on mental health, exploring the causes and coming up with ideas that young people felt would help tackle these issues.
As part of the project the young people made a film to educate others about the
need to reduce stigma, have more open and regular conversations at school/ college, and involve young people themselves in the decision making around mental health services.
Another example this Autumn, supported by the Surrey’s Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, will be a project to gain insight into young people’s views of the police and establish positive ways of developing good relationships.
We are sure there are many more organisations interested to see the world through the eyes of young people, and to gain an insight into their views. If you are one of these organisations, or alternatively if you know a group of young people who would like their voice heard, please contact [email protected]

Volunteering“Whether you have just 1 hour to give or can offer many more, by volunteering your time and skill you will not only hugely benefit youth organisations in Surrey, but your volunteering will also provide a healthy boost to your self-confidence, self-esteem, and life satisfaction” says Gjoril Berg. Over the past 2 years Surrey Youth Focus’ Communilab network has been enabling business volunteers and local charities and youth organisations to connect. Successful examples include a marketing professional who has used their CSR hours to support a charity develop a marketing and social media plan, a small team of business development experts who have spent a day coaching a charity CEO and a company designer who has offered time to produce a number of
publications (including this one – thanks Lucy!). There have also been a number of team challenges to build an allotment and paint scout huts amongst other things.
